This article is from The Atlantic Wire, and looks all the way back to the first usage of the word “sext” in relation to texting.

You can read the article here.

Oh.. and below is a blast from the past when I made a video about the word :-)

Sorry, I’m 4 days late on this! I’ve been out of Los Angeles, for the past couple days trying to avoid this, which was supposed to be brought on by this. Instead, I am being chased by these while braving the weather here.

Anyway.. I should be back home shortly.. but in the meantime, today’s nerd word marks the death of another word.

The Associated Press announced on the 18th of March the death of “e-mail” with a hyphen.. it’s now known as “email”.

Last year the AP did away with the hyphen in <del>web-site</del> website as well! Poor hyphen, getting no respect!

Perhaps I’ll call it a… PC?

I often make fun of these words, and even make videos about them (8.9 million views and counting, btw!), and now a whole slew of these words are now official! The Oxford Dictionaries Online (sister to my favorite source, the Oxford English Dictionary) has officially recognized such words as:

Sexting

Scareware

Clickjacking

Woot

Sammich

Prolly

Who’da

Fnarr fnarr

You can see the list of new words here with some additional ones here.

What’s Fnarr fnarr you ask? Well, the official definition is:

Pronunciation:/fnɑː ˈfnɑː/ (also fnar fnar) exclamation British informal

used to represent sniggering, typically at a sexual innuendo: That’s some package! (Said the bishop to the actress, fnarr fnarr)

And what’s sniggering you ask? Well, that comes from “snigger” which is “a smothered or half-suppressed laugh.”

Boy, this stuff seems complicated! Someone should do a show about words like these!

Bye bye my dear students, MWAH! <– another of the now official words!

I already put the answer in the title.. arggh!)…. well…. Prii!

Now.. do you really see yourself using Prii to refer to the multiple “Prii” parked outside of the annual Mensa gathering? Seems rather pretentious, right? Though, if you were one of those attending, then.. well.. you know what I’m saying.

As it turns out… Prii is not really the proper plural of Prius.. since Prius is a Latin third declension neuter adjective meaning “earlier”.. so the proper plural version should be Priōra…. but now it’s getting ridiculous!

If you want to be cool, you can start calling multiple Prius cars, Prii…. but can you really hear the fast talking car salesman on TV telling you to “Come on down, before all the Prii are gone!”? I can’t… I’ll stick with Priuses, thank you. Now, I have to go feed my walri, they’re hungry.

Let’s get Marina equal time on The Colbert Report. Word Request for “Truthiness”

Colbert’s re-invention of “Truthiness” is similar to O’Reilly’s of “Pinhead”. Both unknowingly re-invented a word used previously. However, do the re-inventions differ in that O’Reilly re-created Pinhead with the original meaning but Colbert re-created with his own meaning or version of it? Was Truthiness (re) born with Colbert its father or is it just another derivative of Truth or Truthy? That’s a question for HotForWords.

This question is a hot button or issue for Colbert. Excerpting from Reference.com (http://www.reference.com/browse/wiki/Truthiness):

“Colbert came up with the word truthiness just moments before taping the premiere episode of The Colbert Report on October 17 2005, after deciding that the originally scripted word—”truth”—was not ridiculous enough. “We’re not talking about truth, we’re talking about something that seems like truth—the truth we want to exist,” he explained. ”

“The Oxford English Dictionary has a definition for ‘truthy’ dating back to the 1800s….’The fact that they looked it up in a book just shows that they don’t get the idea of truthiness at all,’ Stephen Colbert said Thursday. ‘You don’t look up truthiness in a book, you look it up in your gut.’”

“Though slight, the difference of Colbert’s definition and the OED’s is essential. It’s not your typical truth, but, as The New York Times wrote, ‘a summation of what [Colbert] sees as the guiding ethos of the loudest commentators on Fox News, MSNBC and CNN.’”

“Colbert, who referred on his program to the AP omission as a ‘journalistic travesty,’ said that it was similar to the much-criticized weapons of mass destruction reporting leading up to the Iraq War. ‘Except,’ he said, ‘people got hurt this time.’”

“On January 31, 2006, Arianna Huffington used truthiness on the Huffington Post. Huffington later appeared as a guest on the March 1, 2006, episode of The Colbert Report. She challenged Colbert on his claim that he had invented the word truthiness. During the interview, Colbert declared, “I’m not a truthiness fanatic; I’m truthiness’s father.” Huffington corrected him, citing Wikipedia, that he had merely “popularized” the term. Regarding her source, Colbert responded: “Fuck them.”

Colbert defines Truthiness in this video http://noolmusic.com/videos/colbert_report_-_truthiness_comedy_video.php.

Arianna Huffington is a respected author but no philologist. To answer this question, Marina is the woman for the job. I have requested Marina on The Colbert Report at Questions & Comments about Comedy Central Programming (http://www.comedycentral.com/help/questionsCC.jhtml).
Examples of this would be your instead of you’re, its instead of it’s, or as Will Farrell said in one of his funny impersonations: “strategery.”

You gotta except it, its so common for people to be lexadaisical, if not, than I’d say your a genius!

Can you think of other examples of lexadaisicalness?

Thanks Evan Owen for the suggestion!

Unfriend: verb – To remove someone as a ‘friend’ on a social networking site such as Facebook.

The New Oxford American Dictionary has chosen this word as the 2009 WORD OF THE YEAR!

Runners up included hashtag (I like that one), intexticated (did it already :-) ), sexting (ditto).

Unfriend really does have a lot of meaning though, though it does seem a bit Facebook-centric, right?

You’d better be nice to me or else Imma let you finish, then Imma gonna unfriend you!
