Olympic Trivia

Hello my dear students! Your favorite teacher is back with another round of Olympic trivia. Ready? Tell me, which of the following was an official event in past Olympic games: fire-fighting, poodle clipping, tug-of-war, or delivery van driving? [Pause] Believe it or not, they all used to be Olympic events!  Well, poodle clipping—where contestants tried to trim the most poodles’ fur in a two-hour period—was only a trial event, but it had 6,000 fans at the Paris Games in 1900!

So, while we’re on the topic of fake-sounding events that really exist, do you know what Olympic sport uses The Uber Cup as one of its qualifying events? The answer is badminton, a funny-sounding word in its own right. Where did the name and the sport come from? Hot for Words is here to investigate.

  2. I’m reading some Sacramento history books. The Arden-Arcade area is a heavily built up NE suburban area (since the mid 1950′s) hosting one of our major shopping malls, but was undeveloped land in a 4,400-acre Mexican land grant in the 1800′s. Due to the owner being talked into it by an enthusiastic employee, this area produced more of these than any other place in the U.S. in 1888. What were they? (Hint: They were alive and had four legs and were sold all over the world.)

    … {tumbleweed}

    • That one doesn’t even need “investigating;” it’s a weed (an undesirable plant) that tumbles (rolls end over end) along the ground at the mercy of the wind for the purpose distributing its seed over a wide geographical area. Applied to a person, it means someone who does not have a emotional attachment to any particular location and so moves around as the tumbleweed does. You know, sort of like Marina nowadays.

hmmm … so, basically, M is a nomad. She follows her prey as it moves around the geography. And her prey is fame and fortune. It looks like, most of the time, her prey sits around on rocks sunning itself in California.

  9. Daily Comment Weirdness Report:

Have you noticed that a lot of DISQUS “mentions” (the commercial “at” followed by the user name) are popping up in replies. I certainly didn’t put them in any of my posts, yet there they are there. I wonder what the new rules are for this in the 2012 version of DISQUS?

the matte areas of the Australian AU$100 Kangaroo coin makes it my favorite tho. Can’t do with all that unrelenting shinyness on the other ones. Makes em bland.

    .. hmm .. what next?

Either a China 500 Yuan Panda, or Mexican Libertad (which is legal tender, but doesn’t seem to have a face value)

    • Maybe that’s because it isn’t worth anything.

Have you heard that in some countries where bribery of government officials is rampant, they have made up phony bills (which are blank on the reverse to preclude charges of counterfeiting) expressly for the purpose to handing out to said officials? I suppose they can get away with it as the official, not wishing to make a public display, quickly pockets the phony bill, and the passer swiftly disappears into the crowds before it is noticed.

        > “Maybe that’s because it isn’t worth anything.”

you mean the Mexican Libertad? .. yeh, well … it’s 24 carat 1 troy oz gold like the others (‘cept the sovereign = 22 carat approx 1/4 troy oz). They just didn’t give it a face value. It’s not like the face value of these 1 oz gold coins is anything practical. I just like the idea i could spend em – the Mexican coin spoils that. The shopkeeper wouldn’t know how much change to give.

  11. M tweets she is in Malibu now. Suppose she tweeted she was on the moon? How could you tell? Someone could tweet they were at all kinds of exotic locations doing all manner of trendy things and nobody could tell what was what unless you bumped into them at the toilet paper aisle at Walmart. Tweet: “GUESS WHO I JUST SAW AT THE OXNARD WALMART WITH A LITTLE WHITE DOG IN HER SHOPPING CART? SHE’S SOOOO BUSTED!”

Horrible design. Looks like a disinterested student designed it.

The Australian coin is much nicer. But then, the Maple was the first bullion coin after the (South African) Krugerand and there wasn’t any concern about design quality back then (i presume).

Next will be an Austrian 100 Euro “Vienna Philharmonic” coin.

(i’m regarding bullion coins as a particular kind of money account .. either it’s sitting around in a bank, or in the form of tangible substance)

I like the maple leaf. Is it the queen you’re referring to?
(Tsk, just the kind of remark you’d expect from a Welshman, ie?)

      • Anonymous says:

the maple leaf design is adequate, but the queen’s head is like a bad cartoon! .. and implementation is no more than stamping identification – nowhere near as classy as the australian jobbie.

On the other hand .. they’re not intended to be anything more than bullion coins, so design etc is irrelevant. So, the maple leaf coin is the more honest of them.

Dear Marina, Thank you for the background information about the Olympics. I enjoyed watching the games this summer and I look forward to 2016 when the next Summer Olympics take place. Now that football season is starting again, how some more videos about football? For example, why is taking the football past the goalline called a “touchdown” when the player doesn’t have to touch the ball down? I hope we will enjoy a great football season, this year. It’s great that you are posting more videos. I hope you are reading these comments, as I’d like to be your Teacher’s Pet.

I’ve been intending to catch up on my lessons here for a little while… The last couple months i had my laptop breakdown on me not once but twice. It’s working now tho. : )
But I will have to wait a day or two tho… I’m a little heartbroken over the very recent loss of a beloved pet. I’d rather wait to get my mind right.
I’m happy to see these lessons up, and look forward to actually taking the lessons soon.
    Thanks, Marina!

Still with the purple video lighting! I don’t know why M is satisfied with it when even a lowly incandescent bulb would be an improvement, giving better skin tone. The thumbnail pix for this blog though is yummy.
