TalkOclock is an interesting way to wake up and meet new people!

  Hello my dear students!

TalkO’clock enables people everywhere in the world to talk to each other, create new friendships and reconnect with old friends. They break down the walls of traditional social networks by connecting people who would never meet otherwise. Their unique approach is to use voice, person to person, rather than text because voice is the most impactful and personal real-time communication tool that exists.

Here is the video featuring your trusty teacher using talko’clock service

Lots of love,

Marina

    First! (Big deal nowadays!)

What do you think of this TalkOClock thing? Don’t we have enough going on without a stranger calling us up at 3 AM to ask how to unstop their toilet? Of course, M can call any time.

A Ukrainian boy was going to marry a Russian girl. His father gave him several pieces of advice for his wedding night:
“At first, grab her firmly and throw her on the bed to show her that Ukraine is strong.”

“Then jerk off and leave the room to convince her that Ukraine is independent.”

The only way to know that is to have been a fly on the wall when she went through her metamorphesis/epiphany/paradigm shift/colonic-gone-wrong or whatever the heck happened to her. We have all been in mushroom mode about that since it happened. Meanwhile, like you, this site’s pathetic band of hangers-on pathetically hang on to see what life after philology will be like.

You know, it didn’t take very much more than her pile of books and her laptop to carry on as she had been, so if she was making a satisfactory living from it, you would think she would indeed simply carry on. She could have cut way down on the hours it takes to produce a video and still have kept the site going along as usual and still have time to find her new self or get herself “recentered” or whatever she is doing.

In other words, I don’t know what happened to the words either.

Dear estimated IR. Do you happen to be from Zimbabwe, Israel or Afghanistan by any chance? Just curious. Also, if you don’t mind, could you pick a racial and ethnic category below which you think you belong to and which describes you best? Don’t feel compelled to answer, all right? ¡Gracias in advance,  friendo!

    A) Whites: those having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa.

    B) Blacks: those having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa.

    C) Reds: those having origins in any of the original peoples of Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, or other Pacific Islands; see also Pacific Islander American.

    D) Yellows: those having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, and the South Asia.

    E) Blues: This category captures responses from the rest (but non-USics).

    F) USic/USish/USinos: People who self-identify themselves as having the heritage of the native Vernacular-American speaking nations of the Americas (in other words, USans).

You are right! I just changed one character in a comment by editing and the statement appeared. However, several test comments edited only two days ago did not have the statement. Therefore, in the last few days, someone has changed the way the site operates and it is not retroactive to older comments that were edited in the past.

The “(Edited by author [age of edit])” statement that now appears at the end of any edited comment is new in the last few days. • Neuroway

No. It’s a black pawn, by convention starting the game on the seventh row. The correct notation for this move would be:
Pn1=Q. And ch is used only for the king. A queen in never in check. You just take it like any other piece on the board when you can.

Let me guess. Chess is not really your forte, is it?

  • Neuroway

No. Divide and conquer. Attributed to Philip II, king of Macedon (382-336 BC), and also to Julius Caesar (100BC-44BC) I’m sure you’ll find something about them on the net if you don’t know who they are.

What’s the relation between the two hemispheres of the brain and diarrhea and vaseline? Can you be more explicit? As for Santorum, I  assume you are talking about Rick Santorum the US politician, right? I trust that someone like you, with your age and your education, wouldn’t be thinking about something else…

  • Neuroway

I don’t think Italy is waging a war somewhere on the planet at this time. Actually, I’m almost sure Italy didn’t bomb a single country since WWII. So I would assume that Italian soldiers are not dying for any cause anywhere. I guess Catch-22 is some fiction work. Am I right?

No. It was not a coïncidence, if that’s what you mean. “coincidink” is not a word, by the way. And no, I don’t think the world is full of coïncidences. Coïncidences are very rare. And when you experiment too many of them, if you’re intelligent enough, you’ll start thinking that something around you is not “statistically normal”, if you know what I mean, because “normal statistics” generate very precise mathematical curves than can be extremely well modelized nowadays.

As for the little video, I saw your link in the Tweeple window above. And I found it very interesting. Good one, mijj!

re military provoking music: .. interesting view. I don’t see variations of metal as military provoking.  It depends on your background i think.  Metal is industrial working class music – it reflects the qualities of mechanical industry.  British metal started in the UK midlands industrial manufacturing area – ie. car manufacturing.  Black Sabbath got their sound from the machinery in the car manufacturing factory they worked in. But if you don’t have an industrial background or environment, you would probably associate it with the military because you have no other reference.

I was attempting to make a pun, a form of humor that rests upon words resembling other words of similar sound but different meaning, e.g. “διαίρει καὶ βασίλευε” and “diarrhea and vaseline.”

In response to Rick Santorum’s comparison of homosexuality to child molestation and bestiality, gay rights activist Dan Savage promoted the neologism definition of {Santorum} as “”the frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex.”

I suppose after explaining it, it’s not very funny.

I learned the game in the late 1950s, and above, used the Descriptive Chess Notation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Descriptive_chess_notation) prevalent until 1981. Notation for the move was dependent on the color of the piece moved, thus the far row of the board was the 8th row, whether one was black or white.  Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) now uses algebraic notation, in which the move would be Pb1 or Pg1, queen side or king side, respectively. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algebraic_chess_notation)

A pawn becoming a queen could very likely put the opponent’s king in check or even checkmate on the same move.  So of course I was not referring to a queen being put in check.

That parable was invented probably by Russians to laugh at the imperial aspirations of Ukraine. I should not quote such vulgar content anymore.

There was another example of Slavic humor, but less offensive – a story about Hungary during World War II:

In South America, at a diplomatic banquet, two men who were sitting at the table were talking to each other. They did not know, however, neither their nationalities nor the names.
“And which country do you represent?”, asked the representative of Uruguay.
    “Hungary, sir.”
“Hungary…”, wondered the Uruguayan, “Excuse me, sir, but I forgot
where this country is located: in Europe or Asia?”
“In Europe”, said the offended Hungarian.
“Ah, yes, yes, so it must be one of the Slavic countries.”
“No, we live in Central Europe and we are descendants of the Huns.”
“You are descendants of the Huns and you live in central Europe… it’s
very interesting. And what is the type of political system in
    Hungary?”
    “We are a kingdom.”
“Oh, if I may ask, what is the name of your king?”
“We don’t have a king. Hungary is ruled by a regent, admiral Horthy”
“Ah, you have an admiral, so you must have a powerful fleet!”
“No, we don’t have any fleet, since my country has no access to the sea”
“What a strange land: a kingdom without a king, an admiral without a fleet. Does Hungary have any territorial claims?”
“Yes, we have claims to Romania and Yugoslavia.”
“So you fight against two countries at once!?”
“No, not at all, we don’t fight against them, but, on the contrary, now we are fighting side by side with them against the Soviet Union”
“So do you have any territorial claims to Russia?”
    “No, we don’t.”
“Sir, I’m afraid one of us has drunk too much. Well, maybe better let’s stop talking about Hungary.”

By fade in/out, do you mean that that the color saturation varies from the top of the bar to the bottom? I notice that the saturation is even across the bar at disqus.com and sacbee.com. How do the settings adjust the color? Is it just specified by a number or do you supply a sample of some kind?

    Seriously…

    WTF happened to this site?

I’ve been busy having one drummer after the next forestall the completion of the recording I’ve been trying to all last year. Finally going to track with a drummer this week who can actually get the part for sure, so I thought I’d check in here. I have been checking in here off and on, but it wasn’t until just about now that I noticed a huge absence of word videos for quite few months now. Marina herself seems to be somewhat absent from the site.

Soooooo….. Any old schoolers like me still around? As in fans going way back to the early days of HFW? Can somebody fill me in on what’s up? Why does it appear as though Marina has abandoned the making of the very same videos that made her so popular? Why has she stopped interacting with her students? Usually, she’d be the one to answer that, but she seems to be missing in action at her own website. Haven’t had much luck tweeting her either.

I hope its a good thing, like she got a film role or is developing a show or something like that. I have other musical opportunities, so I’m not worried about that, but I can say that I am worried about her. She’s a fantastic person, educator, and video artist. She brings infotainment up to a whole new level. It would truly be a sad thing if this is a permanent absence and not a temporary one. I’d love to be filled in on what happened and where she is these days. Little help?

And to those of you who know me and am curious about my music, I am going to be finishing up the recording of ‘The Harder They Fall’ this month, and will still put it up on youtube once I get the video done. I’m sorry I’ve struggled for a while only to not have anything yet, but I’m not about to give up and abandon my music. Marina always said I should find other youtube personalities as well as her to crosspromote my music when it’s done, and I guess that’s who I’ll have to seek out if she’s no longer in the game. No offense to them, but Marina will always be my number one choice, and I’m still hoping she gets back in action sooner rather than later. Only, not much I can do about it if she has chosen to retire the making of the word videos. Those videos are a big part of what got Marina to where she is today. If she stops being prolific in putting them out, then I fear her subscriber base is going to stop growing, and will eventually dwindle and fade. Now is the time to be building on success rather than resting on one’s laurels, but who knows… Marina is an artist and an entrepeneur, so I’m sure she has her reasons. What she seems to have stopped being is an educator, and that concerns me, because she was so good at it. Not sure why she’d stop when she was always more passionate about all of this than any of the rest of us were. I always admired her ability to make a name for herself using this website and youtube. I always pictured hotforwords as constantly growing and evolving, and never thought it would stop. For now tho, it appears that it has stopped, at least the educational philologist side to it. I’d be very much interested as to the reason why.

Everything you’ve noticed is correct. If you look at http://hotforwords.com/2011/07/24/15-wonderful-words-with-no-english-equivalent/, you will find that others noticed the same thing. Even the infamous
Charles T. Como made a cryptic appearance here then and he didn’t sound all that confident or happy with the situation. It all started when M did a series of about 6  videos from a strange place (echoey hallway?) and she appeared to be disturbed about something (broken heart?), eliciting a flurry of guesses from her fans on YT. Then those vids were pulled.

Since then, she has reposted some words and made a few blogs (like this one) that appeared to be simply fillers. She hasn’t appeared in the comments since. I believe the site was tweaked to improve things back then and then moved from Florida to Seattle, so someone is doing something, but I don’t know who is responsible.

Lately there has been the rumor that she is visiting (moved to?) NYC. Who the heck knows?

So far we have been in mushroom mode and just “Schultzing:” I KNOW NOTHING! I think things would have been a lot better if she had just confided in us and maintained a dialog. This silence is maddening.

When exactly did this all happen? Did she pull those videos down for quality control, or was there some sort of controversy? I sincerely doubt that this is the end for HotForWords, but it is most definitely concerning to those of us who have grown accustomed to her internet presence. I tweet her sometimes and email occasionally, but it’s always been here where she’s been most available. She built this website up on her own and ran it herself quite well. This was homebase for her phenomenon. I’m sure it still is, but it seems to be in limbo right now. At least she has been putting up some new stuff, but it still seems more like going through the motions.

It’s hard to say what the hiatus might be, especially if Marina is remaining mum about it. She is an artist. She could be having a block in inspiration or going through a transitional period. And she’s undoubtedly a very intelligent person with a passionate spirit, so who knows where her current journey lies.

Thing is, this is so not like her. She’s about 40000+ subscribers short of 500000. Usually this would mean she’d be churning out a bunch of vids and making a big drive to reach that half a million subscriber. Plus we’re talking about a person who makes awesomely entertaining philology videos, so why would she stop doing something she’s got such a gift for? No one else is capable of doing quite what she does. It’s a shame to see her not being her usual prolific self. I mean, the word request backlog has got to be HUGE at this point.

Another thing is that she loves her students, especially us old schoolers. Clearly, she’s still hanging in there, and the cooking and painting vids were a real treat. But overall, it seems our trusty teacher has gone on an unannounced vacation without telling the student body. It’s no wonder some of us are sitting around scratching our heads in an empty virtual classroom.

My biggest concern at this point is how this is going to effect the future of HotForWords. Besides being a loyal fan and friend of Marina’s, I am totally dedicated to the mission statement of this website and all that encompasses HFW… Intelligence is sexy, and people can be educated in entertaining ways. Philology being popular in the American culture is a very good thing. No matter how successful that mission has been so far, it needs to build on its successes as it moves forward to a bigger and brighter future. Look how successful it’s been so far… why stop now? Marina earned everything she got, and built this all up from the ground up. HotForWords deserves the best, and so does Marina. So do all of us who care tremendously about this site and her. It would be a very good thing if this hiatus ended and she got back on track.

I would suggest that those of us concerned about her should band together and try to get to the bottom of this. We need to go about it in a way that is not intrusive, that is not pressuring her to do anything other than what she feels is best for her right now. If she is going through something, she deserves the space and time to process. At the same time, she won’t begrudge us for caring and wanting to know what’s up. I have faith that it will work itself out in time, but I also totally believe in making a kind, friendly effort to inspire her to make word videos again. Things like that make a difference, and we all need a support system sometimes of friends who care and want the best for us. All I want is to see her back in action, and to see her get to that 500000 youtube subscriber base she has worked so hard to build. Let’s see what we can do if we handle it in a way that is sensitive to her artistry, her intelligence, her individuality. It’s definitely worth a shot.

EF wrote: “When exactly did this all happen? Did she pull those videos down for quality control, or was there some sort of controversy?”

It was about 5 or 6 months ago (there’s a gap in videos between 7 and 4 months ago). I don’t know what you mean by quality control in this instance, but I think she thought better of those videos and removed them. She seemed depressed in most of them. The last one had her asking if she thought we liked her just because of her sexiness and then she unzipped the back of her dress while facing away and… well, let’s just say it was memorable. In one, she went on and on about how she thought a guy asking a girl, “‘Sup?” was disrespectful, etc. Most fans (including me) replied that this was over the top, although we could see that she was definitely unhappy about something.  EF wrote: “It would be a very good thing if this hiatus ended and she got back on track.”That pretty much sums up what we were and are all thinking, so you are preaching to the choir. Now let’s just hope she reads your analysis and takes it to heart. However, I don’t have much expectation that she will, though, because six months is enough time for snapping out of a funk if it’s going to happen. I think everyone feels she could be “fixed” by just giving her a big hug, and, of course, each of us feels we are just the right person to do it.

No, but I had a friend that wrote a program in Pascal to work the puzzle. The program was short, but the steps it performed were very tedious to say the least.

“Black Metal was invented in Norway”
Interesting ….but I beg to differ with some of your statement although you’re probably right about the Norwegians ruling the Black Metal genre nowadays. I would say they’ve dominated the scene since the 1990s.

I’m pretty sure some of them bands from Norway were inspired to play by listening  to some of these bands who came onto the music scene in the late 70s and 80s.

…there’s so many others too. So who really did invent “Black Metal”?
I like some of the bands that hail out of Norway, but what was up with the church burnings, I mean why they so fucking serious?

Yes, you’re right, of course. the so called “first wave of Black Metal”.
I said “invented”, but they only modified this music.

but the typically Black Metal sound (i mean the Black-Metal sound of the second wave) was made up there, which they first called Death-Metal by the way.
    This was:
    - overdriving the guitars so much that you have to listen exactly to get the chords.
    - using rubbish-microphones to make the sound more “true”.
    - making the vocals unintelligible
    - using less (2-3) chords, for a whole album
    - designing a repetitive sound, which sounds at least for me like military marches for other maybee like industrial machinery. (i mean the mantra-like repeating of the sound might bee the possible new thing, which was added to the music)

if you disagree with me, feel free to put in a caveat!

Human subtlety…will never devise an invention more beautiful, more simple or more direct than does nature, because in its inventions nothing is lacking and nothing is superflours.— Leonardi Da Vinci

Which we have now learned is total nonsense. DNA, for example, is known to contain a great number of unused genes. Anything designed “by accident,” even if successful, is going to be a non-minimal design.

Pssssst! Hey, CK, come here! Shhhhhhhh! Quiet quiet… I have a secret to tell you… Don’t tell anyone, but you know, humans didn’t design themselves!

Humans are just an imbecile bunch of stupid moronic apes. They have been designed together with their cousins the monkeys and the chimps, by Nature, which is actually infinitely more subtle and intelligent than them, during an accident she had ages ago when she was not that wise and old, you know?
All right, gotta go! Let’s not disturb the class today! Looks like our dear fellow students are all on Ritalin today, all calmed down, relaxed and cool.

BTW, do you know about a super-black metal germano-gothic melody, that says something like this:

“BANG BANG BADABOOM I’mma gonna befriend da divel, BANG BANG BADABOOOM yah, I’mma gonna beefreind da devil, wooowhhhahahaaaaa Waaahwaaahahoooo?”

I believe it’s from a german band too. The artist name is Hellmutt Von Krackerjackenfest or something like that? Does it ring a bell? Can you help me to find this one on the net? I’d love to add it to my collection!

It is another beautiful California morning after a week of rain. I am dog-sitting for four days while my sister and the brother-in-law drive down to 80° (no kidding) SoCal for a few days doing theme parks.

I have frozen pizzas. I have frozen mince-meat pie. I have butter-pecan ice cream. I have peach yogurt. I have cashews. I have cable. I have Internet. And if it were not for the damned dog trying to chew up everything it’s inquisitive nose can find, I would have nothing to complain about. Tonight a friend of mine is coming to town to deliver cars (which pays for the gas for the trip) and is taking me out for dinner and giving me a new (or at least refurbed) iPhone which he got from AT&T for the grand sum of 99¢ (such a deal!).

And now I shall take my leave to make and devour a snow-pea-stir-fry and cheese omelet, and, if things run true to form, a meteorite will smash the house to bits just as I get the fork to my mouth. The dog will then eat the omelet and spend the rest of the day grinding what there is left of the house into unrecognizable pieces.
