Good luck to you on your “system cleanse” program. If you are determined, you will succeed. I can’t join you because of planned dinners at Christmas and New Year’s, but I will try to eat and drink a little less than I normally might. We have a nice bottle of wine to taste.
If you start to feel sick or unhealthy during this “cleanse” please stop and take something healthy for yourself. You have many cases of Neuro drinks, don’t you? That might be healthy. Just don’t take any unnecessary risks. I’ll look for your Christmas card in tomorrow’s e-mail!

Collectibles

Fresh Out Of High school, I found a job cleaning the elegant home of an older couple. Among other duties, I had to dust their many imported carvings and petrified collectibles as well as pick up after their pets.

One day I was astonished to find 2 ivory fossils lying on the floor beside the bookcase. I quickly picked them up and put them back on the shelf. The next week the same thing happened.

That afternoon my employer came into the parlor, her faithful canine behind her. Looking around, she eyed the bookcase.

“Tippy, ” she asked the dog, “how do your bones keep getting up there?”

English School

Donald MacDonald from Scotland went to study at an English university and was living in the hall of residence with all the other students there. After he had been there a month, his mother came to visit him (no doubt carrying reinforcements of tatties, salt herring, oatmeal and whisky).

“And how do you find the English students, Donald?” she asked.

Gone With The Wind

2 mice live in a movie studio warehouse and are looking for food. Suddenly one hears the other chewing.

A minster waited in line to have his car filled with gas just before a long holiday weekend.

The attendant worked quickly, but there were many cars ahead of him in front of the service station. Finally, the attendant motioned him toward a vacant pump.

“Sorry about the delay. It seems as if everyone waits until the last minute to get ready for a long trip.”

The minister chuckled, “I know what you mean. It’s the same in my business.”

Butcher Shop

A lady goes into the butcher shop as she is walking around the store, she spies a beef tongue in the butcher’s counter. The lady asks, “What in the world is that?”

“Beef tongue, ” replied the butcher!

The lady gives a little involuntary shudder, “No way would I put anything in my mouth that came out of an animal’s mouth!”

Day Off, a Boss’s Perspective

So, you want a day off?

Let’s take a look at what your asking for. There are 365 days per year available for work. There are 52 weeks a year in which you already get 2 days off per week, leaving 261 days available for work. Since you spend 16 hours each day away from work, you have used up 170 days,leaving 91 days available.You spend 30 minutes a day on a coffee break. That accounts for 23 days each year, leaving only 68 days available.

With one Hour for lunch period each day you use up another 46 days, leaving only 22 days available to work. You normally spend 2 days a year for sick leave. This leaves you only 20 days available for work. We are off for 5 holidays per year, so generously give you 2 weeks off for vacation per year. This only leaves 1 day available for work. And I’ll be damned if you’re going to take that day off!!

Bad Timing

A parish priest, Father O’Brien, was being honored at a dinner on the 25th anniversary of his arrival in that parish.

A leading local politician, who was a member of the congregation, was chosen to make a presentation and give a little speech at the dinner, but he was delayed in traffic.

Sooo……Father O’Briend decides to say his own words while they await the politician’s arrival…..

“You will understand, ” he said, “the seal of the confessional, can never be broken. What is confessed in there to me, is never repeated on the outside. However, I got my first impressions of this parish from the first confession I ever heard here.

Realize, please, that I can only hint vaguely about this, but when I came here 25 years ago, I thought I had been assigned to a terrible place.

The very first chap who entered my confessional told me how he had stolen a television set and, when stopped by the police, had almost murdered the officer. Further, he told me he had embezzled money from hid place of business and had an affair with his boss’s wife. I was appalled. But as the days went on I knew that my people at this congregation were not all like that, and I had, indeed come to, a fine parish full of understanding and loving people.”

Just as the priest finished his talk, the politician arrived, apologized for his tardiness and then started in on his speech.

“I want to thank you all for letting me say a few words this evening in honor of Father O’Brien. 25 years is a long time: In fact, when he arrived here, I had the honor of being the first confession he heard at this congregation.”

Now that is bad timing.

“Ah, well, ” said the priest, wiping his sleeve, “Boys will be boys.”

Twas the night before Christmas in the HotForWords house
Not a creature was stirring, not even Gorbys toy mouse.
The comments were all hung in their threads with great care
Hoping teachers reply, soon would be there.

The students were drowsy, all snug in their beds
While visions of first comment danced in their heads.
And Skip in his bed, and I in my cap,
had almost logged off for a long winters nap.

When out from my Android there arose such a clatter,
I sprang for my phone to see what was the matter.
Away to the Mac I flew like a flash, tore open the cover
and hit refresh with a bash.

The screen so bright, aglow in the dark,
Skip got scared and let out a bark.
When what on my monitor screen did appear,
but a holiday message from Marina with cheer.

With a wonderful smile, so smart and so bright
I knew in a moment it had come from Marinas cool site.
More rapid than 3G, her helpers they came,
and she whispered and smiled and called them by name:

“Now Capman! Now Jack!
Now, James and Anud!
On, PageDoll! On ChaCha!
On, BillyB and Bob!
From the decks of the yachts!
From the wood in the halls!
Now type away!
Type away! Type away all!”

Then in a refresh, I heard on the street
the tipping and toeing of cute little feet.
As I focused my ears, listened and stopped,
through the front door, teacher appeared with a hop.

She was dressed in all white with glitter of blue,
I fell back off my seat, this couldn’t be true.
A bundle of books she had hung on her side.
Guarded by Gorby, along for the ride.

Her eyes so blue, how softly they twinkled
Her cheeks so high and not even a wrinkle.
The smile on her face drawn up like a bow.
And locks of blonde hair with a fabulous glow.
The stump of a pencil she held tight in her teeth
and her hair was styled in the shape of a wreath.
She had a cute smiling face and a flat little belly,
that tightened when she laughed unlike a bowl full of jelly.

She spoke not a word, but went straight to her Mac,
edited and uploaded, the lessons were stacked.
And in closing one eye to give a slight wink,
she turned with a blur and was gone in a blink.

She sprang to her car, to Gorby she whistled
and away they both flew, down the street like a missile.
But I heard her exclaim, as she drove through the night:

We had a big feast Ham, Noodles Mashed Potatoes, cranberry sauce,, pies, cookies, you name we have it. I hope all of you has had a great meal. A Hard Lesson

A minster was giving the children’s message during church.
For this part of the service, he would gather all the children around him and give a brief lesson before before dismissing them.

On this particular Sunday, he was using squirrels for an object lesson on industry and preparation. He started out by saying, “I’m going to describe something, and I want you to raise your hand when you know what it is.” The children nodded eagerly.

“This thing lives in trees (Pause) and eats nuts (Pause)…” No hands went up. “And it is gray (pause) and has a long bushy tail (pause)…” The children were looking at each other, but still no hands raised.” And it jumps from branch to branch (pause) and chatters and flips its tail when excited (pause)…”

Finally one little boy tentatively raised his hand. The minister breathed a sigh of relief and called on him.

Taking A Walk

One afternoon I was walking on a trail with my baby daughter, chatting to her about the scenery.

A very bad accident happened at the Brewery in Milwaukee this past week. Two Redneck workers fell in to a vat of beer on the night shift. One of the men rescued himself almost immediately. The authorities are trying to determine the official cause of death for the Redneck that drowns in the beer vat. These authorities have considered ruling his death a suicide as the official cause of death. They now have a witness that says the man climbed out of the vat twice just to take a piss.

I hope every one had a great Holiday? We have a big snow fall which is very pretty. Now the next big thing is the dropping of the ball in New York to ring in the new year. The Town I live in just incorporated to be a Town to keep the city from annexing us. The Town Council has come up with the idea of a giant flea drop on on New Years Eve. Our community used to be called Flea Hill and was changed to Eastover. So the Town elders came up with dropping a giant Flea. It’s made like a big teddy bear out of cloth and padding. It should be great time for our little town. If y’all get a chance come and join us. (smile)

That’s nice. We had heavy snow and then severe frost before Christmas, a melt for Christmas and now we have freezing conditions again, what means a thick layer of ice everywhere on sidewalks.

How long is it before our machines start making their own decisions?

The presence of PedanticKarl on this forum warranted high quality of discussions. The level decreased significantly after the time when PedanticKarl passed away (fortunately the discussions has been recently improving again). Except every death is sad, from our point of view his death was a real loss for the entire community of the HFW site, as he was the greatest contributor, erudite, discussant, mediator and Marina’s helper. And everyone here knows that’s not courtesy – he really did the most for this site.

That’s hard to predict.

Now it’s impossible to simulate even a reptile brain with a processor – it’s a long way to implement the real process of thinking in computers – maybe 50-100 years, maybe centuries, maybe never (it is theoretically possible, but the problem lies in the number of details needed to build such a device – they may be impossible for potential constructors to comprehend and reconstruct in the whole).

But on the other hand there are already programs and devices that uses artificial neural networks or other classifiers to make decisions based on numerous input parameters – but of course in a very restricted scope. But that’s not the kind of decisions you asked about.

Although if you think about it, our computers already make their own decision, and other technologies that we implement on our machines, classic example of this is the simple computer virus. The Trojan Horse makes it’s own coarse on our machines, as update software makes it’s own decision on when to update itself. Look closely on the eyes of our creations that are watching us, waiting for us to make the wrong move.

Never Sick

There are many people throughout the world that listen to Rock-Metal music who contradict the stereotypes associated with this kind of music and do contribute to society in many positive ways. But, there are those who condemn and criticize metal whenever given a chance. I think this is because metal music, like punk and rap, addresses some key issues that many people choose to ignore. It survives in a world of inequity and injustice.
It is an easy target for religious groups though because yes, there are satanic themes and mysticism found throughout this genre. But most people I think would see this as being like a form of entertainment, kind of like a horror movie. It’s all {gimmicks} to get attention. Also religious and special interest groups have used artists in the metal/rock genre as scapegoats as in a couple cases with Judas Priest and Marilyn Manson BLAMING THEM for the suicides of some young people and the Colombine shootings when it was also discovered there were ISSUES within the families of these individuals. Some of the lyrics metal and rock artists use I think explore the tensions between reality and dream, evil and power rather than actually celebrating satanic rituals. They don’t actually worship evil! Heavy metal is just another form of art used to express its own message to those who are willing to take the time to listen. I think Art and Music is just a reflection
of what goes on in our society in general. Metal like other forms of music if you can believe this can be a relief from anger.

I find this to be an interesting quote from Stephen King:

“The tale of the irrational is the sanest way I know of expressing the world in which I live. These tales have served me as instruments of both metaphor and morality; they continue to offer the best window I know on the question of how we perceive things and the corollary question of how we do or do not behave on the basis of our perceptions”.

Social effects of rock music

Some people simply might not like the abrasive sound in metal music and wouldn’t hear the message some artists are trying to convey in some of their music anyway. One example from many would be Exodus I think they rock! m/ …but that’s me.

I’m posting this as going with your theme, I hope I’m not judged or critisized over my choices and opinions, I don’t come here for that, but there is a great big gap in a lot of your fellow classmates replies or posts of any kind, there must be some reason for this, I come in peace, yes I have strange, weird, bizarre, questionable outlook on many a topic, but I’m only human and have feeling ,and emotions just like you all! These people mentioned above are some of the most open minded, caring, sharing friends I know. As for my personal opinion about metal music, I don’t like “dark” genres of metal like black metal or death metal with lots of growls, but I like to listen sometimes to thrash metal and similar genres.

Born and raised proud American, im just as upset about whats going on as you are… alx i am by no means what you call a so called scholar, but Islam has thought me to follow the religion of Abraham (peace be upon him), im sure you can relate to that. The same message that all the prophets came with. i believe in Jesus (peace be upon him). In the Quran it says that if you kill one person it is as if you have killed all of mankind… and if you save a life it is as if you have saved all of mankind… all i ask of you is that you dont just believe what you hear and see on t.v. and what people have to say about something. dont follow blindly do the research read the scripture before you bash it. We are all here for the same reason regardless where we come from, culture, or the color of our skin what does it matter. Mankind has turned religion into something that has separated us and caused hatred amongst our people. You have the choice to believe whatever you want but the least we can do is respect one another. Alister Crowley, was a free mason, among other things, he was label as the most evil man in the world. A man of great questions behind, some of his method’s ideas etc. He always seemed to lose a baby every time he tried, and there was some questions about his actual involvement with free masonary, most of the main free masons refused to accept the rank, or whatever you call it in free mason, He claimed to be of very high rank. I must admit the barbwire video shoot of Pamela Lee Anderson, if she is still married to Tommy Lee, who ever knows about celeberties relationships, and if its on or off, or whatever they would call it. It did get me aroused and enticed, by that sexy frame, with the water hitting her, and she showed major cleavage, wow man that just brings the animal in me come out. She had me hooked, that may be wrong, but it is a guilty fantasy, I know such a women is way out of my league, to easy going with her body, she has been around, all celeberties/rockstars. She has a very expensive taste to say the least, by her appearance her attitude, but I shouldn’t judge, but it’s hard not to after that sexy performance, but then some of my lust went away when she hit that guy with her shoe. Ouch, did that kill him LOL! That is part of her act/role, she could be a totally different person, than the one I witnessed in the film. She has a big thing about rockstars, I think one of her first lovers was Bret Michaels, the head singer of Poison at the time! She starred in Bay Watch, I never got to much into that. I just happened to notice her, and other sexy woman with not much left for the imagination in dress. But I don’t know much about it other than it takes place on a beach. I have a guilty like of all the styles of metal, Just imagine, when I was very young I thought Van Halen, Poison, Bon Jovi, AC/DC, Ratt, Queensryche, and such bands was real metal. I guess they could be borderline on some of their songs/albums of Motley Crue was pretty heavy for Shout At The Devil, I was also guilty of liking their other albums, I have this thing, once I become a loyal fan, hardly anything will change it I like Aero Smith. But then I got more into classical metal like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, then thrash,then into the rest of the metal scene gradually, the hardcore, extreme,dark themed , the in between and the positive or good themes as well.I have a multi interest in metal/hardrock It is meant to offend, justs just the way I’m, my friends later on in life introduced me to darker harder more extreme metal, along with other themed kinds of metal. I like some Christian Metal, I could go on but I better stop now, just caught up in the moment, the discussion, I listen also to darker, more evil bands, but that’s not all. At first I thought anything other than classic/Power/Thrash I didn’t like it, but my friends later on in life got me to like all the rest.or otherstyle over a long period of time, used to the rest of the genre. I was surrounded by guys and woman, with tattooes, love all the music I didn’t care for at the time. Hello fglrx, at least you like and understand that metal isn’t evil, you at least like part of the Genre, Thrash was one of my favorites and still stands very close to my other full circle taste, that evolved over time, Metal is a very misunderstood part of music to a lot of people looking for the evil, if you look long enough you will find it.But most of these groups , and such use metal as a scapegoat for the many problems in life. That’s the way I see it, and the best way I can express it, I’m only trying to complement you on your open mindedness and at least like some of what metal has to offer, you gave it a try and found out you like thrash metal, and that is a good thing to me. i don’t really want to get into, and keep to, scripture(s) as — and i’m sure you know this — there are not only peaceful things in there. in fact, the peaceful things seem to be the lesser part.
here’s the thing. when you want to find about about the nature of something, you’ll have to look to places where that something is (pre)dominant. so, as for islam, i’ll look to iran, saudi arabia, pakistan, and so forth. you get the idea.

one of the reasons i asked you about how your faith affects your every-day life is this: the muslim council of germany (that’s where i’m from) asks for muslims to commit to the laws, rules and regulations of germany, to its constitutional law. but it also states in its charter that islam is not merely a religion. it is also ethics etc., a way of life. so it’s not something you only practice in private.
so that poses a problem right there. because our laws, laws of a more or less free and democratic society, are quite obviously not necessarily consistent with islamic law. e.g. honor killings and such. sharia, whatever. you may say, those actions are neither sanctioned by the quran nor are they common practice. well. the thing is, that shit happens. over here. in our society. and not just once a year. and those wo do those things justify their actions with their faith. there are a lot of people debating those issues over here. those debates are also about integration, migration and so on.

one sentence that actually turned into some kind of mantra is, ” ‘THE islam’ does not exist.” most of the time followed later on by something like, “islamism is not the same as islam.” i’ve always found that kinda funny, because: how can you tell islam from islamism if there is no such thing as “THE islam”? that just doesn’t work.

don’t get me wrong, i’m not islamophobic or something. i’m also opposed to christianity and all the other religions. :D
it seems to me, though, that christianity has sort of calmed down since the middle ages but islam has not. there’s a lot of violence in there.

so. i will not respect your belief. i will, however, respect you as a human being.

salaam (peace)…I really do appreciate the fact that we can discuss things in this manner and that you do respect me as a human being. Not only am I not a scholar, but I am most deff. not a politician lol. I understand your point of view as far as you looking for where Islam is predominant. Once again we are looking at the actions of people who “claim” to be Muslim or claim to be Christian or Jewish, but only use it as a back bone or a crutch. Not one of these religions preaches unjust killing, molestation, or greed (not in any particular order =). But we as mankind choose to do these things. You see Gods word has no flaw, no contradiction. And yes Islam is not just a religion it is a way of life that does teach ethicist, manners, and how to treat one another. Islam also does teach that I have to obey the law of the land. If I don’t like it the least I can do is hate it with my heart, if not then speak out against it, if that doesn’t work than physically do something in a “peaceful” manner. Islam teaches that before we commit any action we must get our intention straight. Do I want to be a cop because I want to save lives and a really care about my community? Or is my interest or intention based on me gaining power, having a gun and a badge to make money. You see not all, but a lot of these so called leaders have become corrupt due to greed. Greed for money, power, respect… and they want these by any means necessary even after knowing the truth they choose to sacrifice the rewards of the afterlife for gains in the material world…

Hey leoNard happy New years. I heard of that quote before and it was totally taken out of context of it’s true meaning. And songs can be viewed by different people too many different ways one of them is that there are subliminal Messages that some think and have claimed to make people act evil, commit suicide, Etc. you probably heard it all before, if you keep looking for something you will most certainly find it! Believe it or not there’s a technique that vocalists in metal music (or shall we say screamers) learn to use to sing from their gut area using their diaphragm and different breathing techniques. I don’t know about the guy in Ektomorf but he and the rest of the band have been around for over a decade with several albums under their belt. This singing coach has helped out a lot people who choose to sing this style of music. But hey, there’s a lot of women getting in on the action when it comes to fronting a Metal band in particular like this gal from Arch Enemy. Hear her Roar! LOL…no, seriously she’s killer! m/ (>o<) m/
Arch Enemy has been around well over a decade too with several albums.
Of course there are people who wouldn't get into this style of music maybe including yourself. I don't see a lot of these singers doing this at 60 years old but you never know.

Thank you for your thoroughly original Christmas Card Marina. I hope you had a Merry Christmas. Somehow I must have missed your card, since I was travelling to the Northeast and got caught in the blizzard. But I obviously didn’t do nearly as much travelling nor encounter as much snow as you! How astonishing that you were able to send your card from South Pole Station, Antarctica! At first I was a little puzzled how your card was postmarked Dec 25 yet you emailed it Dec 24, but then I realized that at both the poles the longitudinal meridians converge, so you could be on both sides of the international date line at the same time–very clever ;-) [Of course, your students expect no less of you.] So the bigger question is, why did you go to the South Pole when it’s the North Pole that’s associated with Christmas? Is this your anti-Christmas Card? Or, as I suspected all along, is it your was of protesting the commercialization of Christmas?
