Catch me at 4pm PST as I help open Project 4 Awesome!

Tune into Project 4 Awesome on YouTube at 4pm PST / 1pm EST to see me help open the show. It’s streaming live via YouTube from Sunny Rainy California!  The show will be featuring a whole SLEW of YouTubers and entertainers.. so be sure to watch the whole show.. from 4pm PST until 8pm!

See you there!

Here is the video from the event. I ended up leaving out a whole part about how charity was the word commonly used to translate the Greek word agape.. which means love… not that it came from it!  Live broadcasts are a bit daunting at times, especially when they tell you last minute that you only have x amount of time!

“Believe nothing merely because you have been told it… Do not believe what your teacher tells you merely out of respect for the teacher. But whatsoever, after due examination and analysis, you find to be kind, conducive to the good, the benefit and welfare of all beings – that doctrine believe and cling to, and take it as your guide.” ~ Buddha

You need to work in a secret signal your opening. I say a double peace sign, palms in. Or maybe a finger behind the ear, as to adjust your hair. The most important thing about a secret signal is letting your fans know what its going to be BEFORE you do it.
    I think it sounds fun.

    Just HTML tags.

    For example:
    <big>big letters</big> for big letters
    <b> for bold letters
    <u> for underlined letters

Of course we can mix them, e.g.
<big><u><b>big underlined bold caption</big></u></b> for a big underlined bold caption

Here is the link to the archived video with Marina from the live event:

I really like how some people on Youtube and Twitter have compared Marina to Lady Gaga.

It makes a lot of sense to me:

Marina also has new clothes every new performance.

Marina also has her own style

    Marina is also gramorous/glamorous

Marina also is emerged in her activities, she does what she does because she is passionate about it and spends a lot of time on it

(Marina also has no “boyfriend” because she is really busy, if I should believe interviews with any of both )

But that is just my thoughts. :-)

I’ve been thinking, if Marina is a geek because of her passion, then Lady Gaga is also a geek ?

  • Lennie

I have a wordrequest for {wine and vine} it sounds like they have the same origin.

  • Anonymous

Thank you for reminding us that grammar = glamo(u)r.

  • Anonymous

Marina was so excited with her appearance at P4A that jumped from Greek agape to English charity omitting Latin caritas between them. I wonder how many viewers was surprised with such a mental shortcut, which might be not so obvious.

  • Lennie

It looks like she had her story ready before she went on. She also explained Teddy Bear a little bit different (especially shorter) then in her own video.

  • Anonymous

I think they must have distracted her or limited her time for “charity” and she had to say in one sentence what she had prepared as a longer statement.

  • Anonymous

I think the whole confusion about the word philology in the US (when Marina introduces herself as a philologist) comes from the differences in terminology between English-speaking countries and continental Europe.

The field of studies that is traditionally called “English studies” is known under the name of “English philology” in whole continental Europe (e.g. английская филология in Russian, filologia angielska in Polish, Englische Philologie in German, filologia inglesa in Spanish etc.). As a subject of university study (i.e. what is called major in the USA, but at many European universities there are no minors and majors – the subject of study must be chosen before the matriculation and the curriculum is restricted to the courses related only to the chosen field through the whole studies) it is completely the same as “English studies” in some other countries.

Of course there is also a second, specialist and narrower meaning of the term philology – this one is known also in the English-speaking countries, but only among specialists.

    Desr Marina,
What a nice interview you did for charity! You wore a nice dress and a pretty hat and you were very polite It made me sad to hear that your toys in school were nailed to the floor and you were forbidden to take toys home from school. After you had so little when you were young, it’s so good and generous of you to help little children get a few toys today!
And I’m glad you have a nice, big Teddy Bear today! You look so sweet when you hug it and of course I pretend that you’re hugging me, but it’ not like the real thing!
I mailed you a Christmas card and I hope you receive it soon. I didn’t say much in the card, but I hope you will feel the love with which it was sent.

Correct! I ended up leaving out a whole part of charity being a common translation of the Greek word agape which means love. It’s a little nerve-wracking being on a live show!

  • neuroway

To me, it looks more like the charity event promoting Marina and not Marina promoting the charity event…

Your gravatar and nickname are attention grabbing, richclubgirl. You come here often?

  • neuroway

Yes, and it came into English from the French word charité and not the latin caritas, probably at the time of the Norman conquest of Great-Britain. This was omitted too. Quite a lot of the word origin was omitted, actually.

Saying that charity comes from agape is like saying that flavour comes from foetor. It is totally irrelevant for people who google the thing.

PS. Can you believe that in the European Union every egg in retail sales must have a code printed on it? That’s not a joke. Every code must contain a country of origin, a producer identifier and a code of the metod of production (organic, free range run, barn run or caged chicken).

I suppose rather RFID microchip implants. Now we implant them in animals, especially dogs and cattle, the same with people can be only a matter of time.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hs-euGPE-FY гравитации мальчик

Yes, wine, vine, grapes… they all came from the same thing… the Earth.
They are tangible items. In the past if you produced such things you could (or course) sell them. And the person purchasing such things would also have to earn the cash for the purchase by selling something tangible (physical labor and actual Earth (land) is included).
Now a lot of things are virtual… just binary numbers, like computer programs or websites. The big ones like MicroSoft, Facebook and Google are sucking billions of dollars out of the economy and they are not actually producing anything tangible.
Joe Schmoe had to cut down a tree, make a table out of the wood and sell it to buy an electronic copy of Windows XP.
This is creating a tremendous imbalance in the reason for necessity of depletion of natural resources.

  • neuroway

Bah! No problemo. Fortunately we are in possession of tools like google to figure out the difference between Agápe, Éros, Philia and Storge, and their respective philological pedigrees and offsprings. We do understand the flaw. No need to apologize. Thing of the past now! Already forgotten! Sooo, miss Orlova, being on a live show is a little nerve-wracking eh? Oh really?

  • Anonymous

Moreover, people are paid for real work virtual money that also are not much more than binary numbers.

  • Evan Owen

“Charity” is one of a number of words that come from the PIE root word *car- meaning “love” or “affection”:

    charity
    care
    caritas (Latin)
    querer (Spanish)
    caru (Welsh)
    cher (French)
    carnal
    whore (!)

    Hey guys / gals,
    can you add some more?

  • Evan Owen

    @neuroway :
    Careful, don’t scare her away!
richclubgirl, neuroway is actually a nice guy and verry funny, even though he says he is Klingon (which I think means from someplace south of England, north of Spain, and west of Germany.)

  • Evan Owen

Yeah, I noticed that too. Like you, I read her mental process from agape to caritas to charity, but I suspect most people were ???

  • Evan Owen

Yeah, the one cool thing about the Norman Conquest is that it gave the Anglo-Saxons the vocabulary they needed to think. lol

Interesting legend: one-third of the retinue of William the Conqueror (né “William the Bastard”) were from Brittany (in northwest France, for the geographically challenged), and saw the campaign as a re-conquest of the land from which they had been driven out by the Anglo-Saxons. I haven’t verified this, though.

  • Evan Owen

Toastmasters, Marina! Build your public speaking confidence! It’s a whole lot different from being alone in front of a camera!
    grin

  • Evan Owen

    Hi G-Boy,
I don’t quite follow you. Does something have to be tangible in order to be of value?
Perhaps electronic entertainment is sparing the earth from depletion. If we put all our efforts into acquiring tangible stuff made from what we dug up or cut down, instead of amusing ourselves blogging, we’d be creating MORE damage.

  • Evan Owen

    Hey neuroway,

Got an old poem you might appreciate:

Oír hablar a un hombre, fácil es
Acertar donde por la primera vez
    Vió la luz del sol;
    Si habla bién de Inglaterra, es inglés;
    Si habla mal de Prusia, es francés;
Si habla mal de España, es español.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hs-euGPE-FY гравитации мальчик

No… That is the point… somethings are virtual but still high value and somewhere else someone is cutting down a tree to pay for it.
That is what I called the imbalance.
If you follow any cash flow trail, the initial goods are always something that came from the Earth.
Amusing blogging, No… if you amuse yourself blogging, you are hitting websites with ads, website owners and google are getting paid for another virtual thing.
The ads might have come from a company selling tangible items (Earth).
If they are selling virtual software there is no difference, you can still trace it back to Earthly goods.
All of the virtual goods are like the top of a pyramid scheme but the base of the pyramid is the Earth.

Bill Gates sell a virtual copy of XP
Joe Schmoe does physical labor in an auto garage to pay for it.
Suzy Cream Cheese gets new tires on her car, that pays joe’s salary.
The tires came from a rubber tree, from the Earth.

People are amusing themselves on Facebook and Zucker has billions because of it.
    You can’t see this? I don’t care.

This following comment was made on my website, it looks interesting, thought I would share:

Ya, we all might be looking forward to celebrating our Christmas traditions, but do we actually know where these mysterious traditions came about? Putting up some filthy tree in our living room? Yet almost 2/3 americans do this every year.

Back in Europe before the settlers came to the U.S, Christmas was a tradition celebrating the winter solstice, or the longest day of the year. For other countries, there were many other celebrations following the winter solstice, and birthdays of their holy gods, etc. In Europe, the Christmas holiday tradition was just a big feast! A ton of fun! Almost everyone got drunk, and ate more than usual. But did you know, that they actually tried to ban christmas? Christmas was getting to wild for the catholics, so they tried to ban it all together. But that didn’t last long, as when the settlers immigrated over to the U.S in the mid-1600′s, the traditions carried on, in our new world, the U.S

Ladybug Ladybug what luck will you bring?

You did so good! I just had to tell you that after watching the clip again. Its seemed as if you were a bit nervous in the very beginning, but it soon pasted. You really got into your groove after scolding the boys for interrupting you. Ha! Its just what you needed to break the chill factor..and it worked. I can’t even imagine what’s going through your head when its live like that. Probably everything you what to say, everything you don’t want to say or have come out wrong, and all the stuff you may say during the time you don’t have anything planned to say, all the while the words LIVE LIVE LIVE are running through your head. And if that wasn’t enough, they put you in the kids chair and you were tryin’ your very darnedest the whole time NOT to give the cameraman a frickin’ boner! Gawd! The short story you told about toys when you were a kid had impact. Although share light heartedly, I believe you made many very important points, however indirect they may have been. Thank you. I loved that outfit!!
I saw you in a vid on The YoungTurks about the whole weed issue. You did great. I didn’t even know that vid existed. Apparently you were filling in for someone? In any case I thought you did a super job.
