Why I want to incorporate DISQUS on the site
Hey guys.. I decided yesterday to try to incorporate DISQUS into the website as a way of improving on the commenting area.
Some of the most visited WordPress websites use DISQUS, such as Mashable (that I love), Engadget, CNN, MTV, and they finally incorporated a way that our existing user-base can start using the system without having to register again with them.
So I felt that it was time to give it a try.
The reasons why I want to use DISQUS are as follows:
- DISQUS offers a single place where I can see all the comments on the site and answer them (including from my iPhone). Currently I am having trouble keeping up with all the conversations.. I currently find it easier for people to communicate with me via other means, which is contrary to why I set up my site in the first place. DISQUS will allow me to get back into the conversations on the site.
- It will allow people to comment on the site without having to register specifically with my site (Single-Sign-On). If they are logged into Facebook, or Twitter or other systems, they can start commenting right away. That should help the community grow. I can still do all the moderation stuff I did before (and more) with DISQUS… it just makes it easier for people to participate
- You can reply to comments via email and those replies go right back on to the site! I had put together a bit of a hack that was not built into WordPress where you were all notified of comment replies.. but those could not be turned off, for example, in the regular comments section if you inadvertently left them on. DISQUS notifies you of those comment replies but also let’s you respond via email! That is MAJOR for me, again, as it will allow me to participate more easily. It will be nice for you as well.
- You can embed media into the comments, YouTube videos, pics, etc.. I think that’s cool!
- Pages don’t have to reload when you post a comment. This frees up the server to allow it to do other things and run faster as we result.
- It tracks references to the post for other sources.
- It allows me to integrate Tumblr into my site. Tumblr is a blogging platform that allows me to post pictures, videos, audio, links, text, etc. from my iPhone and automatically distribute that post out to my Facebook page, my Twitter and to this site. You’ll see it integrated in the Tumblr link in the navigation. Tumblr uses the DISQUS commenting system as well, so you can all participate there seamlessly.
- Once you sign in on the site here, you’ll be able to make comments on other sites all over the web without signing in. Plus you’ll be able to TRACK those comments all over the web from a simple interface. So it truly does extend your community out to the web.
Concerns about using DISQUS
- Will it affect the other aspects of the site, such as the private messages, the groups and forums (the Buddypress stuff)?
I don’t think it will as all of those things remain intact, and DISQUS syncs with my existing site, but if we do encounter issues, I will try to fix them. - Now I have to sign up to another system?
DISQUS is supposed to integrate with your existing credentials on the site so you should automatically be signed in if you are signed into my site. You may want to claim your own comments on DISQUS if you want to track your comments, but it may not be necessary to do that if you don’t care. - Does this mean that the HotForWords website is doomed to failure because you changing something?
I hope not! I am merely improving the commenting area! Only one or two cute puppies will be killed in the process, but it’s for the betterment of all mankind! Umm… no puppies will be killed in the process.. for those of you YouTubers that have found your way over here, that’s called sarcasm.. meaning.. oh forget it.. watch this video to find out!

before this i’ve already been actively commenting on a blog, allkpop.com. after i’ve started my tumblr,i decided to merge the accounts together. then,i found out that ALL the “likes” i’ve been receiving through that blog are gone(fortunately my comments aren’t).
the other thing is,i tried replying through Disqus dashboard,but it doesn’t work. have open the original website to comment there.

I would have to disagree as well. Over the air updates are a symptom of Android’s greater problem of fragmentation, and not its benefit. I have a Droid X and I absolutely love the phone, but I’ve always felt a huge downside is the fact there is no unifying software to backup and restore the phone. For instance, when iOS 4 came out, there were massive problems with the iPhone 3G taking the software. While there is no easy way to roll back the update, at least you could load up a jailbroken rom or find an older rom from somewhere else. Then when iOS 4.1 comes out to fix the issues, just plug in your iPhone and wallah! Its restored along with all your apps, photos, music, videos, podcasts, etc.

Sometimes, our observations show that “zero”, even if we have comments. Can not resolve this small problem, but if you use WordPress, you should be fine.

I am curious as to where comments I would make “here” are being displayed and stored, since they are no longer a real part of your site in that respect. In other words, where is here? It doesn’t appear to me that there is really any way to opt in or out of using disqus. and I do understand if one really has a concern about privacy the internet is not the best place to be. :)

I am not a programmer.. but your [ a name="respond ] tag right before all of your comments turns the ENTIRE comment block into a link.
You need to call it something like div id=”respond” or something like that
That solves the underline problem.
It’s an anchor tag. It doesn’t turn anything into a link. The black underline under the commenter names was already there before I added the anchor tag.
It sure does. You are supposed to do an anchor tag like such:
Note that the closing a is right next to it.. NOT after all the comments.

Wow.. you are doing something weird.. why do you have all those a name: responds?
You have them all over your page.
You even have them appearing around the comments again. Get rid of them.. you do not need them.
Also.. the reason why you have underlines is because of this:
h2 a:hover, h3 a:hover, cite {

For some reason you have a cite around your comments.. and that tag above in your style.css is causing those underlines.

I love DISQUS and use it on my site. The only giltch we’ve had with this system is because we are using Joomla instead of WordPress. Sometimes our comments show as “zero” even when we have comments. Can’t seem to fix this glitch, but if you’re using WordPress, you should be fine.

I selected the option where the javascript is moved to the footer and that solved my zero comments on the homepage.. or rather.. it didn’t show the count.. it just showed Comments. Would that work for you?

Perhaps, completely dumping the program, and regaining the
control I had before will allow for a working installation to be
loaded. How do I unload this? If there are directions inside the

I am about to do a full system recovery, as I would do with a
virus. This appears to be the only solution to regain the state
my computer was in before Disqus took functionality and
control away from me as a user. Since this will take about a
day to accomplish in this manner, I will be reluctant to reload

Even doing this, the matter of canceling the account(s?) with

Have you ever heard of the ‘Phantom Program’?
It was the first virus program written for mainframe systems.

unload/uninstall the program, and cancel any accounts in my name.
I have yet to receive this information; ergo, my trust is down 99 points.
By completely reinstalling, I will have no hidden scripts, LSO’s, etc.
to contend with. My machine will perform as if Disqus never existed,
hopefully. Of course, any help Marina may offer allowing me to regain
the happy state I was in before this fiasco, without having to do a

I am sad that you wouldn’t let me help you. People don’t have any more problems with disqus than they do with wordpress or tumblr or facebook. In fact, I have less problems with them so far.. so much better than any system I have ever used. Ever.
I am sorry you had problems and are not willing to solve them. It’s a shame because you are extremely important to the site. It’s a shame that we won’t be able to communicate via email and other means. Again, disqus does not install a thing on your computer… but you don’t want to hear it, so I will move on.

When changes made to WordPress screwed up my Avatar settings
a few months back, it took a week – but I was given back control.
Now, I have two Avatars: one that requires me to use Gravatar,
and one that doesn’t. Time was I was required to use Gravatar
in both the lesson pages and the forums. Just another hoop…
As long as WordPress, Facebook and tumblr don’t go through Disqus,
they work fine! I don’t have an Apple computer, I am PC. The ‘P’ stands

Marina, that was insulting, and so not true. You need to go back
over my posts and see where I have busted my ass trying to be of
help and use to you in trying resolve the problems introduced by
Disqus for myself and others in this community. I thank you for at
least trying to help me, but Disqus support has been unable to fix
whatever is broken with regard to my accoun(s?).

Another insult? Hear this: it may not install anything on my machine
(no cookies? no LSO’s? No hidden scripts? – are you sure?) BUT it
sure does mess with my Facebook program, which runs on my machine.
Early in this process, I offered a suggestion that you set up a beta area
to work out the bugs. By your desire to ‘move on’, I can only come to
the conclusion that Disqus works as flawlessly and seamlessly for all
who use it here, and it is only myself (and the multitude of others who
have left posts on the web) who are being left out. I only know about
those people because despite the help you’ve offered, Disqus does
not want to fix the problems with my account(s?). So… move on!
The only viable solution remaining for me is to shed Disqus, if they
will let me! Your site is the only one currently dragging me back
through Disqus to make posts (even though WordPress is not even
selected)! That works good, huh? You might want to read some of the
posts by others in the multitude and see what else ‘works’. I did.
I don’t use Apple, and a year to figure out this badly written, unituitive
piece of… software. Especially when it behaves like malware!!!

I just realized your confusion about “installing Disqus” You are reading about people having issues installing Disqus on their sites. Disqus is installed on websites.. NOT people’s computers.

I spend countless hours trying to keep this website running smoothly. And with that, I still have problems and I try to do what I can to make it run as smoothly as possible.
I noticed that I was unable to keep up with the conversations on the site, so I researched and researched the best possible solutions to help me stay connected with people and that’s how I came up with this system. As you’ll notice, I am communicating more with people because I can do it via email and my iphone.
Anyway.. I am doing my best and I’m sorry you don’t like it.

What are you talking about “no uninstall feature”? I just installed the WordPress Disqus plugin on my blog—Disqus itself is hosted on a different server, but you need to install the plugin—and I there’s a big Uninstall button right there on the Dashboard. With one click Disqus is gone and my old WordPress comment section is back the way it was before. Another click, and Disqus is back and my WordPress comment section is gone. The comments itself remain unchanged.
I’ve got a few minor glitches to iron out, and so I’ve been uninstalled and reinstalled it a few times now. One click and it’s gone. No idea what you’re griping about.
What I would like to know, though, is where I could get a list of all the CSS classes used in Disqus so I can do a little styling.
And the one thing that really annoys me about Disqus is that above the comment box it says “Add New Comment” and below it says “Showing 133 comments”
For consistency’s sake, either both should be all caps, or both should be lower-case with only the first word capitalized. What looks completely retarded is “Comments” and then “comments.” Unfortunately, this seems to be a Disqus server-side issue that the user can’t change.

Do you really need the anchor tag (which is deprecated in XHTML and developers not always care if it works fine) for some particular reason? Every element with id is automatically an anchor and you can use the id name with # to refer to it (I’m writing this basics not for you because you know about it, but for the consistency of my answer, so don’t get offend). Why can’t you use <div id="respond">something</div> instead od the anchor tag?
I suppose you may need the anchor tag it to omit some problems with Internet Explorer.

DISQUS is not installed on your machine.. it has nothing to do with your machine. There is nothing to uninstall.
What is the problem you are having? I got your accounts merged… are they not merged?

Yes… it’s good. A small amount of people wrote a massive amount of code and it’s 99% working as planned at the moment. I think the chacha problem is because of the claim comments thing. They still actually need that so when a website owner converts to DISQUS like you did… a user can immediately connect their one account at for instance hfw to the disqus account. When you had to revert back for a day it caused the multiples? That was something unexpected and it’s not that big of a problem.

Disqus still has bugs! There is no setting allowing for selective subscribes, so you can’t turn it off once it’s on. The only way to stop it is to stop ALL notifications, again, defeating the purpose of using Disqus. I tried to use the email filter to route incoming mail from one site (CBS news) I (inadvertently) subscribed to, but the filters don’t work! Each incoming mail has a unique descriptor; rendering the filtering off of replies from a specific site to a separate folder – useless! I had to turn off my mail notifier, because Disqus has hit me with a mailbomb! When it isn’t acting like a virus, it behaves like malware!I’m gonna give it one more day, and then I’m going to shed it like any other badly written piece of software. I want control of my accounts back. Disqus doesn’t allow it.

I may be getting closer to understanding this bug I’m having with the Disqus accounts.
I put Disqus in the search bar while in Facebook, and it took me to the ‘Moving Comment to Disqus’ page here at HotForWords, logging my screen name as ‘Me Lika Do The Cha Cha’!
Clearly, there are two accounts!
I think one is tied to my Facebook login, and one is linked here.
I still need to noodle around with the Disqus login to figure out if

I’m telling you I wracked my brain on how to keep up with all the comments… I couldn’t find the ones directed at me… I couldn’t really answer then from my phonemic when I was at the computer I couldn’t find the ones I wanted to answer. This new system has changed everything! Plus the tumblr thing should also allow me to bring all of my extraneous media back to the site and it incorporates the new commenting system… So I think I have a winning combination here!

When I had my old website, I used to use DisQus Comments. I am an Administrator For Disqus, thats how I already had the profile
At the top of the disqus comments. Upper right there is a box next to the disqus about. You can expand that community thing there.

I for one don’t really wish my comments, my IDs, all linked together, and I don’t really care that “everyone is doing it.” I suppose it makes your life easier, for the reasons you mention, but for me I will just continue to enjoy a new word in my life, every so often, and whether I comment will lose its importance. Rest assured I will still be enjoying the words, and that really was the attraction to begin with, that a of course Marina’s unique way of making it fun.

Hmmm Well I do understand your reasoning behind aggregating all threads at all times together in order to be able to manage it all but I have to confess a certain old school uneasiness about comments here appearing else where on the internet without either my consent or knowledge. Not everyone is a new media darling and if I choose to keep my private and personal life separate from online participation then I think it is better for all concerned. Fortunately I link very little personal information to my net pesona preferring to reserve that for real world contact. Am I pragmatic or a cynic? The choice is yours.It does however same something of the world that love of self and love of self-promotion have somehow become synonymous with each other. Where will it ultimately end? I hazard to guess but will keep counsel to myself so as not to jinx the outcome. After all now my words have the potential to sweep the world through a dozen different portals who knows where. It could be the tremble of an avalanche that has yet come to pass. Will this encourage me to produce and share more content? Perhaps, perhaps not. We shall see.
I also keep my personal information away from sites where I am just for fun and for clowning around. I use several different profiles for my Internet activity. I of course have for example a real Facebook profile, but I will never reveal it here (although Marina has enough data to identify me and bring a lawsuit against me if I behaved too badly).So now I must stay wide awake and protect myself from posting something here under my real personal data by chance. But I still think introducing Disqus to the site is a good idea that may revive interesting discussions by bringing new people.
You have to specifically be logged into facebook, not be logged into here, then select the facebook button, then click to authorize it to log you in via facebook.. it gives you plenty of warnings so I don’t think you’ll be making that mistake any time soon.

I am not posting your comments all over the web, it is simply a system that processes the comments that offers you some great features where you can track your own comments more easily.
The part about all over the web means that if you are logged in here and visit another website that also uses DISQUS you can start commenting immediately without registering again.
I am just trying to make the experience more fulfilling. Give it a chance, I think you’ll like it.
Well sometimes I am just an ASOB when it comes to playing nice with demographics and make it a habit to logout, clear my cookies and randomly switch my browser when moving from site to site ;) I don’t think it will stop me doing that :)But I guess my theory is finally proven though, that most people are inherently lazy.
