While I’m not a philologist, I do know how to do research. I also happen to own a book called ‘An Entymological Dictionary of Modern English’ by Weekley published in 1921. I’m well aware that in 2010, 1921 is not exactly modern English. But for our purposes, it will do. According to this work, the origin of the word ‘catacombs comes from the Late Latin word ‘catacumbas’ around 400 ad. It originally only refered to the cemetery at St. Sebastian near the Appian Way. It probably was a proper name. The word catacombs can be found in Anglo-Saxon by the Tenth Century. I hope that is of some help to you. Do you have some special interest in the word ‘catacombs’? I would think that anyone who likes the Indiana Jones series would want to know about the origin of the word catacombs.

I worked in Egypt for several months, way back in the early seventies shortly after the war with Israel. My memories of Alexandria are occupied by skinny, ill treated donkeys, decrepit Russian Jeeps and buildings falling into the streets, but the people were mostly warm and friendly (with the exception to their donkeys).
They were initially very suspicious when we arrived, thinking that we were Russians, whom they hated, but when we said we were Brits we were welcomed with open arms.
I quite enjoyed my time there, despite the general air of poverty due to all their resources having been spent on armament. There were still, however, some people who were able to live in some comfort and style, though they were smart enough to keep a low profile.
Apart from them, the only people who looked like they were enjoying life were the few expats, many of whom had strange eastern European accents, very dark glasses and large bulges under their armpits.

Been to Egypt a few times (half Egyptian).

The Pyramids are magnificent, difficult to navigate once you’re inside them. As I recall, only one of the pyramids has oxygen in them, so you can’t go inside the other two.

Khufu’s solar barge buried at the base of The Great Pyramid was pretty fascinating too.

If you ever visit, ride the camels around there, just don’t crash them into the nearby guards with machine guns. Don’t let them step on your feet either, you might end up with camel toe

PS – Los Angeles is hotter than Egypt, maybe the camels should relocate…

While I was excavating around the Sphinx I discovered this. I’ve never been to Egypt but all the history, mathematics, supernatural, mystery and such, is very intriguing to me. The last thing I saw on TV was something about the pyramids, there was some sort of relation of the Egypt pyramids to the pyramids in Central America. Maybe some rascal kids with nothing to do threw rocks at his nose. Bet they got grounded for a couple of weeks. A yes, da’nile…

Study of the erosion patterns on the Sphinx leads to some startling conclusions.
For much of the Sphinx’s history, it was covered in sand…except for the head, which was exposed above the ground, in the path of wind-blown sand. Logically, then, the head should be more eroded than the body. However, the body shows more erosion than the head, leading to the conclusion that the head was re-carved in the image of the pharaoh, long after the original sculpture was made.

Moreover, geologists who have studied the erosion on the body of the Sphinx have concluded that the erosion was caused by water, not wind-blown sand. The last time there was sufficient rainfall in Egypt to have caused this sort of erosion was around the end of the last Ice Age, some 12,000 years ago — when the Sahara was a lush savannah, capable of fostering an early agricultural civilization.

It is obvious that we have to take into account that the Sphinx was erected by a very old civilization. 12000 or more years ago the people who were living in Egypt were completely different from Kheops/Khufu the builder of the biggest pyramid was living 4500 years ago ! In the origin, It was called the Stinx, but due to the very bad smell originating from the surrounding areas, it got really sick and his nose drop off due to the bad smell. Everyone was very sad about it, and a bit ashamed too as they could have avoided that with better cleaning. So they decided to discretely change the name to Spinx which sounded very similar but different (and also because after a “T”, you usually go for a “P”). Then throughout the years, Spinx became Sphinx.

I really want to take spanish next year, mainly because I was born in Mexico. I speak it fluently, and talk to 15 year olds of where I used to live in spanish all the time, but want to take it anyway. I took Latin for 2 years, and I hated it, but I can speak it. Latin is so similar to spanish that I think it will be a piece of cake.

Here is my question: Was latin a foundation for Spanish too? They are so similar, yet so different.

Example:

“What” in spanish is “que” In latin it is mainly said “quid”
“hello” in spanish, obviously is “hola”, in Latin, it is “salve” (sal-whey)
“who are you” in spanish is “quien eres” in Latin it is “qui estis” :???: :???: :???:

I hope this finds you well. In my opinion, a symbol can mean whatever we want it to mean. We can endow a physical object with any meaning we want. If some people care to have a certain hand gesture refer to the devil, that is their choice. Other people may not use that hand gesture in the same manner. Just because someone “sees” someone making a sign of the devil, doesn’t mean that the person making that sign were using that hand gesture to refer to the devil. They might have been using that hand gesture for something completely different. They might even had merely an itch and were not trying to mean anything at all. Some people just get obsessed and see ‘meaning’ everywhere even when none was intended. But I’m not so sure that symbols reflect a higher reality as much as we imagine a higher reality through symbols. I could be wrong about this, but those are my thoughts. Many people have given these issues deep thought. Intelligent have not found a consensus yet.

Almost all of the music you post is new to me. But I wouldn’t want you to feel that you posts are a waste of time. They are not ! The are a part of who you are and that’s a good thing. Even if I cannot find any response to your posts, I’m glad that you make them. I likewise rarely find responses to my posts. There are probably far fewer people with interests in the evolution of thought than in modern music. Maybe our society is obsessed with symbols, hand gestures and all that jazz. I know some conspiracy theories have probably influenced my way of thinking, especially the one about the Central Banking System and their agenda for the World we live in. Call me gullible when so many do question the veracity of some these theorists’ claims. I will not go into details because that’s a whole other issue that would take too long to elucidate, let alone try to clarify it. It would probably be more proper for another forum.
There is one thing I want to mention about Marina that relates to what you’re saying about people seeing a meaning in a hand gesture. Although I can’t find the specific thumbnail, or maybe it was one of her twitpics, but Marina has made hand gestures and I’ve even commented on one or two of her pictures when she’s thrown the horns in the air.
On some others where she’s made other gestures that looked sort of like a peace sign, people would comment and ask her things like “what sign is that?”, “is that a gang sign your flashing?” So on one picture, she wrote in the description “Don’t ask me what sign I’m making with my hand, I have no idea.” or something like that. I thought that was pretty funny.

That way if something goes wrong like a glitch or you accidentally get logged off before your comment posts, you can paste it back in the comment or update box to try it again. It could save you time instead of having to retype it all out again. I know, I hate when that happens.

The meaning that it does have in our culture it acquired because we gave it that meaning. Just as the sequence of sounds for the word ‘hell’ means the underworld in the English speaking culture but it means bright in the German speaking culture. It must give a totally different perception of the world than in people who were raised in a monolingual environment.

Today in Poland there was a big governmental campaign against so-called “smartshops” that sell legal substitutes for illegal drugs. Legal, but much more harmful than illegal weed. The police and health inspectors entered a thousand of such a shops, confiscated the stuff “for the further examination” and closed the shops for a few days. The whole action was triggered by several deaths of young people after taking those “designer drugs” from legal shops.

Although we know Moscow is her hometown for lesson’s sake and her real hometown is Arzamas.

I know a little(mostly folk education) about neurotransmitters. It would be cool if your research could do away with medications and actually cure brain disorders. Ya never know, could be your calling.

The lab where I work conducts rather fundamental than applied research on human visual system, using EEG and fMRI, so they are methods that don’t give an insight into neurotransmitters (although now there exist some methods based on chemical contrast substances that allow tracing neurotransmitters – although only at macroscopic level – the flow of neurotransmitters in the neural system).

Of course, in the future I want to involve in some applied research.

What I like in the neuroscience is that it’s really interdisciplinary – it requires some basic knowledge (or rather ability to understand and use the information) from biology and medicine, cognitive psychology, physics, mathematical methods, and even programming is essential to design experiments and deal with acquired data.
