Give a Damn!

Does the expression “I don’t give a damn” have a funny origin?  Let’s look at it!

Also, please pop over to YouTube, thumb-up, comment and fave the video if  you get a chance! :-)

OH, the drama… Унесённые ветром. Reminds me, I found a Liberty Dime in my penny jar today, like from 1941. Maybe I should give damn or a dime, it might be worth it.

    Dear Marina,
I enjoyed learning the connection between damn and damage. To answer you question, though I have seen many movies, Gone wtih the Wind has not been one of them. I am a big fan of Lina Wertmuller and Charle Chaplin.

    LOL, I loved the end!

    But, I don’t understand. “I don’t give a damn” = “I donn’t give a curse”?
    is it a derogatory term?

    I like “I don’t give a F**k” better, it’s more direct and to the point :p

Homework: something I use quite(sp?) often “Holy balls”

    And now that you mention it, quite literally. How about the phrase {I don’t give a fuck}

I’m still trying to figure out what happened to the Ferrari. Wow, Norman must not be half as bad as he’s made out to be to pull you back from the depths of les so quickly. Does this mean there isn’t an army of fembot secretaries yet? Damn. Well… How dramatic.

My fatal flaw is I do give a damn or I never invest my precious time in the first place, but the status quo hooman relationship behavior standard for most people seems so low and meaningless I don’t really the point. Just time wasted and worth debased in the absence of true love, but such is life.

 Symphony X – The Damnation Game

Forever cursed by this game, he who plays with sin
    Incantations summoned up our creations

We’re players cast in this tale, believe it
    stranger than fiction
    This justice thunders our condemnation

Falling into innocence by a shadow’s kiss
He speaks what mortals dare to say, will he betray?

If you dare play the game – your descent preordained
    from their fiery thrones screaming,
    cursing your name
On the terror it breeds – breathing fire and gree
watch him jest as you bleed…
    Screaming enter the Damnation Game

We can not keep our heads clear,
    or our tongues from evil
by this sword, certain death at our own hands

To have no wants is divine – untrue!
platinum waves tainted gold, we can only watch from
    the shores

Falling into innocence by a shadow’s kiss
He speaks what mortals dare to say, will he betray?

If you dare play the game – your descent preordained
    from their fiery thrones screaming,
    cursing your name
On the terror it breeds – breathing fire and gree
watch him jest as you bleed…
    Screaming enter the Damnation Game

If you dare play the game -
    your descent preordained
    from their fiery thrones screaming,
    cursing your name
On the terror it breeds – breating fire and greed
watch him laugh as you bledd…
    Screaming enter the Damnation Game

If you dare play the game – your descent preordained
    from their fiery thrones screaming,
    cursing your name
On the terror it breeds – breathing fire and gree
watch him jest as you bleed…

Since we are talking about cursewords.. {I would like to know the origin of the word “f*ck” }.. There are stories circulating that it means Fornicating under command of the king (after the plagues).. and a few others but I doubt they are true..

When I was little the word “crap” was often considered a bad word. Well, it can be used as slang for feces.

Oh, speaking of a classic movie that used the word “damn”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31QUOUxqz2M

An example in common place today would be: Wow Marina! you got a nice ass.
 or Gee Marina, you’ll probably kick my ass for that comment. ;-)

Watch your pottymouth, young lady, or one should wash your mouth out with soap. I laughed, anyway.

Homework: I enjoyed the film, The Scarlet Pimpernel about an 18th century superhero. During the film, Sir Percy Blakeney often used the idiom, Sink me!. I though it was a sexual remark, but it turns out that it was an English curse, short for “Sink me to the devil!” especially popular among sailors.

    Dear Marina,
Thank you for another wonderful video. Yes, I saw the movie, “Gone with the wind.” I took a date and it was such a sad movie (they were losing the war, the farms and plantations were destroyed, the world as she knew it was coming to an end, then Rhett leaves her), so she was crying. So I told her “It’s only a movie. It isn’t real.” So she hit me (“Ow!”) and then I felt like crying, too.
I enjoyed the costume and wig you wore for this video. (They really didn’t dress like that, did they?) If you remove that big pin in front of your dress, does it help? Someday, I hope you will show videos in 3D. I’d watch your low-cut dress very carefully.
If you’d stop calling Rhett “Rat”, maybe he’ll stop calling you “Frankly.”
Girls who play with their hair should be force to wash and clean it, later.
Another hint: Never smile at a date after watching the movie, “Psycho.”

    p.s. {irregardless} is not a word?

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/dictionaricdotcom/ Patrick Jouannès

    I don’t give a damn, I don’t give a shit !
Slang uses mostly religious and sexual terminology. Politics could be also included but slang is older than political rights, as old as sex and religion !
In French we say “Je n’en ai rien à foutre” and it means “I don’t give a fuck”.
If the movie were French I supposed it would be the locution used by the actor because nowadays FOUTRE in French is still slang but it’s real meaning has been forgotten. FOUTRE comes from Latin FUTERE “ёбать”

  • ihearbs

r u jealous of Zerubbabel

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/deluxenn/ deluxenn

you’d better don’t use the word ебать
to be honest, there is not a presentable word for it in Russian, only slang
and vulgar words. That why we use an American expression “make love” (Заниматься любовью) There is a Russian verb “love” (любить) but it has not a sex definition, rather it had not the sex definition, because after “make love” came into Russian, it has.
    p.s.
    it’s punishable to use bad Russian words, in Russia, but I can use foreign ones freely :lol: {paradox}

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/deluxenn/ deluxenn

If language has no good books, writers, poets today, it may die tomorrow. If people want to save their language, if they need it, they do it. They speak, sing and write.
Natural selection, this is my opinion.
Of course, all the dying languages must be kept in a safe place, just in case.

Marina! Uhmm, I mean Scarlett. Fabulous video! Even more so because I am in India right now. I’ll do a little background research here on the old Mughal coin known as a “dam”. Rhett didn’t sound angry when he said “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn”, he sounded rather disinterested, which is apropos, and what the film director wanted.

Something funny in Russian I am thinking about : МАТЕРИТЬСЯ means “to swear” and means litterally “to mother” because ЁБ’ ТВОЮ МАТЬ ! “fuck thy mother!” is often used and МАТЁРЫЙ ВОЛК “dire wolf” for “motherlike wolf” must have an influence.
Imagine an English speaker, a mother saying to her kid “stop mothering” !
Every language has its “style” : In French we say MERDE “shit” all the time like in English but also PUTAIN “курва” like in Russian. I would say French makes the bridge between English and Russian.
Please feel free to ask me any slang word or expression. I love it. Курва !!!

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/deluxenn/ deluxenn

The state not controls the speech,
in a nutshell, Russian has some more f-words and it is rudely and ill-mannered to use them in public places and in the presence of ladies. You can be punished not as a criminal but as hooligan. It is like to put your garbage in a wrong place, you can do it but you can get a money penalty.
I don’t know why those words are bad, like you don’t know why f-word is bad.
It’s fun, there is the article in the Offences Code of Russia that gives the penalty for foul language in the public places but this article has not a list of the bad words.

The next time the 222 happens (or something equally odd) pay attention for the next 5 or 10 minutes and the reason will present itself to you.
Ok? I think you have been seeing the 222, get excited, take a picture, look to see how the picture came out, then start a tweet about the 222…
And while you are doing all of this… the reason (whatever it may be) went right by unnoticed (this is why another attempt is made, you get excited and miss the reason again).
The reason will usually show in under 5 minutes or the cause happened 5 minutes before you see it.

It happens to me all the time. I just bought something for lunch at a deli (not fixed price) and it was…
777 I’ve been seeing a lot of ones and elevens doubled also… 11.11

If you figure / find out why you are seeing it I will explain in detail how it works (it’s something with physics).

My grandfather had given me coins like the ones you’re showing. I liked the imagery better than pennies, so I used them in my penny loafers. My mother and I were just talking about “Gone With The Wind”. She said it was the first time she ever made it through it. My favorite line is “I don’t know nothing about birthin’ no babies!” My aunt said whenever she hears the title it reminds her of when her daughter came out of the theater after watching in Conn. she was rapped by some Ivy Leaguers. Homework: I’ve pretty much only have seen spoofs and bits and pieces of the movie.(I pretty much only have a YooToob attention span) What the Fuck used to be pretty vulgar but has become common place as “WTF”.

    Hi Marina
Another great educational show. It’s always a pleasure watching you perform.

My understanding is that the original expression was “I don’t give a tinker’s curse”, with the understanding that a tinker or Irish traveller did not have the true powers of cursing that a travelling gypsy would have.
In the 17th and 18th century gypsies were feared people who were reputed to dabble in black magic and child abduction and if you were to be damned or sent to damnation by them was real source of terror for the average English citizen.
Irish travellers on the other hand were seen as outside of society, poor and weak, they were generally scorned and the low cost ‘tinware’ that they peddled helped to promulgate their poor status as well as give them their generic name.
In the region of England that I come from the expression “I don’t give a tinker’s (curse)” is still frequently used as a sign of defiance or denial.

    Dear Marina,
I have a quote in regards to your new script. It comes from Freud’s ‘Jokes and their relation to the Unconscious’ p. 31 of the Norton Library Edition.
“If one enquires from a youthful patient whether he has ever had anything to do with masturbation, the answer is sure to be: ‘O na, nie!’ (trans. Oh, no, never!)”

Oh ya! When people ask me what kind of music I like I tell ‘em, “From Slayer to Sinatra”. However, I can’t recall the 1st time I heard Frank Sinarta but I Vividly remember where, when, and what I was doing the 1st time I heard Slayer. The fist time I saw them live the entire floor of the San Diego sports arena turned into a giant, slow circling mosh pit with a mountain of chairs in the middle. That was some monsters of rock tour in the early 90s.
Slayer, Megadeath, Anthrax and some other band I can’t remember. Heres a good one, I forgot the tickets!! Yep, had to drive all the way back home(30 miles 1 way) to get ‘em and got to my seat as the lights were dimmed for Slayer…the last band. Waaay too much pre-party!!
    Take it easy bro.

Concerning Onan…my first guess would be ” masturbation” , however , technically, the Bible only records that he spilled his seed on the ground, which could mean that he just pulled out, a term that would be ” coitus interruptus “. My second guess would be the word ” intercourse “.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/leonard/ leoNard

“If stupidity got us into this mess, then why can’t it get us out?” ” – Will Rogers 1879-1935
    from todays HotForWords QUOTE

In brief, when Judah sent his son Onan to impregnate his dead brother’s wife Tamar, he committed coitus interruptus and spilled his semen to avoid conception. Yahweh was not pleased and killed him. From this story, onanism has become synonymous with masturbation and coitus interruptus. …MARINA tweeted—I’m writing a script for a new video that involves Onan of Judah.

    Any idea what the word is? M A S T u R B A T E/net worth

Though Onan hasn’t been accused of homosexuality, the act of spilling semen stretches to homosexuality. In sum, religionists have applied the story of Onan to practically every form of male non-procreative sex.
    :???:
But most of all, Onan’s curse supported a widespread fear of masturbation, primarily in the 1700s and 1800s. It was believed by doctors of theology and medicine to lead to mental and general health illnesses, like vomiting, nausea, indigestion, epilepsy, pimples, blindness and insanity..

On reflection there is another old English phrase still in common use that would fit the bill as the progenitor of Brett’s callous remark.
    “I don’t give a tupenny (two-penny) damn”.
This phrase comes from the old practice of selling both blessings and curses outside English cathedrals.
Once upon a time tupence was a lot of money and a tupenny damn was a potent curse on your enemy. As time degraded money through inflation a damn at this price became a joke or a contemptuous sneer.
Was a dam worth two pennies in the US? – it would explain the name given to the coin.

    Hi Marina
FINALLY got a chance to watch this video. Been helping a guy start up his own small business. Busy, but fun. Great vid. You would have blown Vivien Leigh out of the water. Loved the after credits ‘gag reel.’ Especially the impression of a Hoochie Mama with the “I don’ give a fu3k” part.
When I was a wee lad of ten or so, I saw Gone With the Wind at the now gone Circle Theater in Indianapolis. At nearly four hours, it was a bit past my young attention span, but there was one thing that I remember as if it happened yesterday. When Gable had his first closeup, literally EVERY woman in the packed house sighed collectively, as if on cue. On the way home, my Aunt Betty said that if they dug Gable up that very night, he’d still be sexy. I was skeptical.
Someone probably already mentioned this, but the one word that truly baffles me is the mainstream acceptance of the word “sucks.” Not offended, just surprised at the frequency of its use on TV shows and commercials. The Suck-O-Meter on the Nicorette commercials is a hoot. I’m NO prude, but has it been forgotten that it’s a reference to the act of fellatio? If the voice over said “Quitting fellates. Nicorette makes it fellate less,” would it still be okay? Just askin’.

Regarding personal names: in German, von is a preposition which approximately means of or from and usually denotes some sort of {nobility}. It is part of the family name or territorial designation, not a first or middle name.

    Dear Marina,
In my continual efforts to make you richer, I went to a 7-11 Store and bought a bottle of Neuro-Slim and a bottle of Neuro-Gasm. They weren’t cheap, at $2.49 each, plus bottle deposit, plus California Sales Tax! Each contained 14.5 fluid ounces. As I drank the Neuro-Slim, I visualized my fat melting away, and my waistline getting smaller; but on the next day, there were no measurable rests! :???:

Probably the most famous example of the Russian “матерный язык”:

‘Охуели? Нахуя дохуя хуйний нахуярили? Расхуяривай нахуй!’
‘Хули? Нихуя! Нехуй расхуяривать! Нахуячено нехуёво! Похуярили!’

Every word in the dialogue is a derivative of the word ‘хуй’ – ‘a dick’.

    охуеть – to go nuts
    нахуя? – why the fuck?
    дохуя – a lot
хуйня – crap, shit (something bad or without any value)
    нахуярить – to fill excessively
расхуяривать – to destroy, to smash
нахуй – away from here (or “to hell with this”)
хули – what the fuck/why the fuck
    нихуя! – no way!
    нехуй – there’s no need
нахуячено – it has been filled
    нехуёво – quite well
похуярить – to go, to move on

So, in the Russian language every swear word has a lot of derivatives with various meanings. Swearing in Russian – it’s like poetry!

    James,

Yours is a sad lament which I share. Though, as ChaCha notes, I don’t think it’s new students (a truly wonderful thing!) versus the old timers.

Your message caused me to browse some older HFW videos and the comments to them. Beer (10/6/08) inspired pennsyltuck9′s litany of great brews and a fun ensuing debate. Mischievous (3/6/08) and Halloween (10/18/07) provoked a ping-pong match of back-and-forth commentary from so many: johnscottromnie (an English teacher?), annudermale, ChaCha, LeoNard, Prospero, & CheVolay to mention a few. My favorite might be the spare 44 comments to Oxymoron (11/21/07) each one funny, apt and intelligent.

I’ve been off the site for a few months and only returned last week. Sometimes an absence permits us to see the huge effect over time of gradual incremental change. What has happened to our class? Marina’s lessons have evolved so much (always charming, humorous and clever her work is also now sophisticated and elegantly produced – it’s remarkable. Brava!). Meanwhile, much of the commentary from our class has devolved into a stream of gibberish blog drivel. I adore diverse points of view expressed with sharp, irreverent and spicy words; but that’s not what appears on these pages now. Our teacher has left her class in the dust.

    Dear quiggles and others,
Is it up to us to improve the quality of responses? Let us do what we can. I am a new comer here myself. But I came to this website for high level, civil, intelligent conversation. Though I may not always succeed, I intend to try my best to minimize the trivial and maximize the important.

High level, civil and intelligent conversation? Are you sure you’re in the right place, bertrandr1872? I think the important stuff is not to succeed or not. Not to minimize the trivial and maximize the important. What may seem trivial to you may be very important to others. And vice versa. The important is to be who you are. And the trivial is to act like someone you are not. Be who you are, and you’ll end up where you belong. Act like someone you aren’t, and you’ll end up in a strange place surrounded by strange people and strange things you don’t understand.

    How have you been ?

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/bertrandr1872/ bertrandr1872

    Dear neuroway,
Of course people be themselves. But I still believe that conversation can be, but isn’t always, high level, civil and intelligent.
If someone says, ‘F*ck your mamma’, I woulld generally not label that civil discourse. It is true that there is room for some individual and cultural differences for what counts as civil. In the chinese culture, too many ‘please’, ‘thank you’, ‘yes sir’, yes ma’m', etc. are considered too formal and put offish. Close friends are far more direct. But even in China, ‘f*ck your mama’ is considered rude and uncivil.
If there is a conversation about an ongoing war where women and children are being raped en masse, and someone starts talking about a hand nail that they had a year ago, I don’t think that their hang nail can be considered as important. I will grant you that there are some people who will say that their hang nail is more important to them than said on going war. I would respectfully claim that, even if their hang nail is more important to them, it is not more important over all.
The same could be said in science. My own area of expertise is the history of psychology. Rudolph Hermann Lotze (1817-1881) sometimes gets mentioned by historians of psycholgy. Even a fan of Lotze like myself would not say that Lotze is more important in the history of psychology than Rene DesCartes (1896-1650). That would be simply wrong. If someone in my field were to argue that Lotze is less important than Johann Friedrich Herbart (1776-1841), that would be a point which is a matter of personal taste.
Some objectivity can be found even in the arts. Harold Bloom wrote a book called ‘The Western Canon’ in which he details which works of literature are objectively the best from which we judge the others.
By exposing oneself to the great works of science and art, one can begin to understand what are the great issues of life. (By ‘life’ I include science, math, philosophy, art, literature etc.)
Of couse a peson should be who they are, but a person can shape who they are by deliberately putting themselves in a particular environment. One can mould one’s character just as a sculpter moulds a piece of clay.
What environment do you choose for yourself? Do you like how that environment affects who you are? What other options are there for who you could be and other environments to bring you closer those other options? Most people have not had much exposure to various options of who they could be and most people take there environment for granted.
My being in the HFW environment and doing what I can to promote high level, civil and intelligent discourse is partly an attempt to put myself in an environment to shape my character closer to what I want it to be.
    Yours,
    Larry

    Bertrand,

Once again, I must concede that you are absolutely right. The people you mention, talking about their hangnail, are shallow and selfish. Nevertheless, to them, their hangnail is more important than a war where women and children are raped en masse. And that’s an absolute certainty. By causal inference, such people can probably look better if they are honest with themselves and with others, and don’t act like they care. That way, they’ll end up being surrounded by other people as selfish and as shallow as themselves. And won’t end up in a social circle where they don’t belong.

    And vice versa, of course.

I wish you the best in shaping your character like you want it to be. And my guess is that it is going to be for the better and not the worse.

 her is info copied from Wikipedia—Topology (from the Greek τόπος, “place”, and λόγος, “study”) is a major area of mathematics concerned with spatial properties that are preserved under continuous deformations of objects, for example, deformations that involve stretching, but no tearing or gluing. It emerged through the development of concepts from geometry and set theory, such as space, dimension, and transformation.

Ideas that are now classified as topological were expressed as early as 1736. Toward the end of the 19th century, a distinct discipline developed, which was referred to in Latin as the geometria situs (“geometry of place”) or analysis situs (Greek-Latin for “picking apart of place”). This later acquired the modern name of topology. By the middle of the 20th century, topology had become an important area of study within mathematics.

 also some more—[{MAPS}] are only retained in the brAIn

In the mathematical field of topology, a homeomorphism or topological isomorphism or bicontinuous function (from the Greek words ὅμοιος (homoios) = similar and μορφή (morphē) = shape, form) is a continuous function between two topological spaces that has a continuous inverse function. Homeomorphisms are the isomorphisms in the category of topological spaces — that is, they are the mappings which preserve all the topological properties of a given space. Two spaces with a homeomorphism between them are called homeomorphic, and from a topological viewpoint they are the same.

    НЕТ ЛЕТ

    Светлане Харрис
    «Нет
    лет…» —

    Memento
    Yevgeny Yevtushenko

Like a reminder of this life
    of trams, sun, sparrows,
    and the flighty uncontrolledness
    of streams leaping like thermometers,
and because ducks are quacking somewhere
above the crackling of the last, paper-thin ice,
and because children are crying bitterly
(remember children’s lives are so sweet!)
and because in the drunken, shimmering starlight
the new moon whoops it up,
and a stocking crackles a bit at the knee,
gold in itself and tinged by the sun,
    like a reminder of life,
and because there is resin on tree trunks,
and because I was madly mistaken
in thinking that my life was over,
like a reminder of my life -
you entered into me on stockinged feet.
You entered – neither too late nor too early -
at exactly the right time, as my very own,
and with a smile, uprooted me
from memories, as from a grave.
And I, once again whirling among
    the painted horses, gladly exchange,
    for one reminder of life,
    all its memories.

    Miguel Hernández – Los cobardes

    En el corazón son liebres,
    gallinas en las entrañas,
    galgos de rápido vientre,
que en épocas de paz ladran
    y en épocas de cañones
    desaparecen del mapa.

    Valientemente se esconden,
    gallardamente se escapan
    del campo de los peligros
    estas fugitivas cacas,
    que me duelen hace tiempo
    en los cojones del alma.

    ¿Dónde iréis que no vayáis
    a la muerte, liebres pálidas,
    podencos de poca fe
    y de demasiadas patas?
    ¿No os avergьenza mirar
    en tanto lugar de España
    a tanta mujer serena
    bajo tantas amenazas?
    Un tiro por cada diente
    vuestra existencia reclama,
    cobardes de piel cobarde
    y de corazón de caña.
    Tembláis como poseídos
de todo un siglo de escarcha
y vais del sol a la sombra
    llenos de desconfianza.

Hi Marina, how was your day?
Recall watching Gone with the wind, at my Grandparents some time ago. Their favourite film, always on a Sunday, after being allowed to watch, Monkey Magic. Nana with a box of tissues, Grand-pops with his weezy asthma chest, especially when he laughed! It did go one for a while too, plus everyone fell asleep half way through it! Changing the channel was risky business. Amazing how some can watch with their eyes closed!

Sorry, to hear about your x just walking out on you like that. What a shmuck! Norman looks cool enough, you seem to like him too. Have you met his Mother yet? Certain she is wanting to meet up with you. Meeting the parents has always been, interesting, in the past. Fathers never approve and Mothers can’t do enough. Awkward silences, dry throats asking to pass the salt and pepper, knocking things all over the table, onto laps, onto floors, hoovered up by the dog as all wave manically serviettes clearing the mess, breaking more things from trying to do good! Good impression! Good to leave heading quickly for a McDonalds!

    Hair is, funky too
