Yes, I have been to LA, as I have relatives who live there. I remember being fascinated with helicopters that flew very low at night which shined searchlights on the neighborhood. I had to see more of that flying act and was about to burst out the door when my uncle said, “Get back in here! Do you want to get shot or something? Those are police helicopters looking for criminals.” “Oh, cool! Can I just peak?” “No, Compton is not friendly at night.” Bummer! I really liked the weather in San Diego more though.

I recently went past LA on my way East to Riverside this January, but this was during the worst rainstoms SoCal had in many years. There were so many traffic accidents and detours that it was hard to drive, so I didn’t visit LA, at all! :cry:
My first visit to LA was in the 1980′s and I got to visit the major studios in Burbank and elsewhere. I was in the Army Signal Corps, wso they gave me VIP treatment: that is, I saw lots of shooting sets, met lots of beautiful actresses, got great meals, and had a grand time! :mrgreen:
I also got to shop for photographic supplies ar Freestyle in North Hollywood, went to some nice restaurants in Santa Monica, and of course, the “inversion layer” was in full effect, so I experienced LA smog when it was famous for being so bad! :shock:
I’m no longer an Army VIP, but it would be fun to see the studios again; even a commercial one like Universal, just to see how things are different with recording done on digital cameras, lost if “green screen”, no need for giant lighting since digital cameras are more sensitive than film cameras. I could tell you how things used to be done in “the good old days.” (Yes, they already had “talkies” by the time I was there!). :razz:

I have never to been to L.A. In fact, the closest I’ve been to L.A. is West Central Florida (Clearwater) and State College, Pennsylvania.

Years ago, I was amazed at all the towering oil wells near LA, probably at Hunnington Beach or Signal Hills. I would imagine these have been removed in exchange for newer technology. Can anyone confirm this? It was quite a sight.

I have been to LA more times than I can count. I used to drop off a load at Johnson Controls near ElSegundo near Compton (as I recall). I would eat at the Ihop and walk the neaighborhood near the plant but saw little of the city. I would dead head up to San Francisco and pick up a load of fork lifts and return to Lexington, Ky. I did think it was beautiful out there but I only vacationed there twice. Thanks for the video.

Also, you might be surprised to learn that the film industry got started in LA because certain “ethnic groups” had to leave the East coast when Thomas Alva Edison sued them for violating his patents on moving pictures and they went all the way to the West coast and started making their (illegal) pictures there, away from the legal jurisdiction of New York and New Jersey.
The first motion picture studio was actually in New Jersey and was built by Edison on a gigantic rotating turntable with a roof that could open so they could catch the sunlight from any angle.

Might I suggest that included in films about LA are Production Designer Richard Sylbert’s trilogy of films about LA: ‘Mobsters’, ‘Mulholland Falls’, ‘Chinatown’.

I never knew he viewed them as such until he explained that at a party one evening. Dick may have been a little difficult to work with in the production office for being a bit of a ‘diva’, but he certainly was one of the very best designers in terms of doing above excellent work, right down to the paintings on the walls and books on the book shelves of his sets.
His films are gorgeous to look at.

I’m not sure exactly what that pastor is thinking in Florida. I don’t know if it was a publicity stunt or what exactly. If he was serious, then he was seriously wrong. As I mentioned , Jesus taught that we are to love our enemies, our enemies being defined as those that hate us and do evil against us. There are factions of Islamics that do persecute and even kill Christians, actions that have been going on for some time now, (historically, there have been those who claim to be Christians who have done the same to Muslims).These militant factions believe that there is justification in the Koran for violent action against those that are not Islamic, and though they view Jesus as a prophet and great teacher, not as great a prophet as Mohammed, they believe the Christian teaching of the trinity as being heretical, and violently oppose Christians. Not all Muslims believe that there is justification for this violence. In all fairness, we Christians have the same view of the Muslim faith. Dear Marina,
No doubt you heard about the huge explosion and gas fire in San Bruno that destroyed dozens of houses. Well, I fortunately survived, as it took place about a mile downhill from me. The servers that YouTube handles also survived, intact. The utilities cut off the gas and electric service to this area as soon as they could. They didn’t restore electricity until 1:30 AM. Several city blocks were burned out, so I didn’t have any Cable TV service, which also is my Internet connection! It took a day to get my Internet back! :smile:
It was hard to endure 26 hours with no Internet! What if Marina put up a new video? I’d miss it! :shock:
I’m happy I’m safe from the fire and that I now have Internet service. I hope to see a new video from you, soon! :mrgreen:

I remembered your comment as I viewed an episode of History Detectives. I was not aware that Eugene Augustin Lauste, who worked for Edison, actually invented the sound on film technology.

Lauste worked on his project until he was destitute for about 10 years. No one was interested in the technology until his patents expired. A large company paid him for his expired patents from which he was able to live on as an old man. He never received the recognition or monetary benefits he should have.

As you mentioned Edison was stubbornly fixated on the combination of motion photography along side his phonograph invention. Likewise, his fixation with direct current electricity cost him when alternating current prevailed. Many times brilliant inventors are unsuccessful entrepreneurs.

Thanks. I also saw that show. Edison was an interesting individual who actually had many more failures than successes in his life, but his successes were so great – moving pictures, the incandescent bulb, the DC battery, the phonograph, etc, that hardly anyone remembers his failures. If you read his biography you’ll see what I mean. Like the time he almost destroyed a bank when he stole sulfuric acid and broke a huge glass container of it, or the Edison Portland Cement Company that failed miserably. (They made houses, phonograph cabinets and pianos out of concrete.)

You are correct about inventors having many failures. The idea is to keep thinking and moving, regardless, which reminds me of a story.

Three frogs that fell into a bowl of cream. The first 2 swam and swam, but gave up and drown. The third kept swimming round and round. Eventually the cream turned to butter from which he was able to leap out of the bowl.

The times I been to LA was on a ‘fun recon’ concerts or games. Did have to spend some time at the Federal building helping the ‘X’ get legal.
