That is so cool Marina !

But now all I need to do is learn Russian to understand the video. :-)

They seem to have an explanation why watching Marina works so well, but I don’t understand it.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/melikadothechacha/ Me Lika Do The Cha Cha

I understood “internet”, “Marina Orlova” and “bikini”
    Aside from that, it’s a blur…
I think they were telling us how Russian people learn english from school, technology and movies; with Hot for Words as the #1 way on the internet.

Can any of you guys translate and transcribe this?

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/docsavage7/ Michael

If you want a laugh, watch on Youtube, and turn on Closed Captioning. Instead of attempting to translate, it takes the sounds of the Russian and parses it as English, and it turns into some kind of political report. Highly amusing.

    Dear Marina,
    Да, я говорю английскую язык.
Anyone who studies English would learn hundreds of new words from watching your videos. You help all people understand the language better.
Would you like to read some jokes? The latest news is that Lindsay Lohan just got out of jail and went to rehab. (Lindsay did some ads for Neuro drinks, just like you did.) Here’s some jokes.

Robert Shapiro did a short stint as attorney for Lindsay Lohan:
“If the client’s a twit, I have to quit!”

Advice to Lindsay Lohan from friends Britney Spears and Paris Hilton:
“When caught with joints, booze or pills, plant the evidence on yout pal; that’s what a BFF is for.”

Paris Hilton visits Lindsay Lohan in rehab and asks: “I baked you a cake with a hacksaw blade in it. Why didn’t you cut your way out of jail?”
Lindsay Lohan replies, “Because I didn’t have a hammer and chisel to cut through the cake.”

I hope you’re enjoying the cooler weather here in California!

When I was in college at Ohio State, I took Romanian as a foreign language. I figured there were all these students who already know French, Spanish, etc… but who in the hell speaks Romanian? Anyway, the professor who taught the course was absolutely wonderful and about six weeks into it, abruptly stopped the class one day. She said, “Before I can teach you any more Romanian, I have to teach you English.” And for a few days, we went back over sentence construction, verbs, nouns, adjectives, etc…

It was fascinating and I’m glad I took a year of the language. I learned a lot about a great culture. I don’t remember much of the language though!

    Buna Ziua! ;-)

Here is funny for traditional foods that will make you laugh 25 Old Time Diner Slang Words

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/fglrx/ fglrx

When you post a link, check it to be sure it works before the editor runs out of time.
Sometimes, the editor will show a string of characters where you have placed a ‘greater than’ or ‘less than’ sign.
It takes some getting used to…
The solution is to overwrite the character string with the greater/less than sign, again.
And remember, There’s no crying in baseball!

In Skykomish in the ’60s, a “hard drive” meant taking the old logging road to the top of Tonga Ridge. “RAM” was a male mountain goat. “Upload” and “download” meant pitching the cordwood onto and off of the pickup truck. Aha. Sooo, Marina, when are you going to offer a Russian language course? (Best way to learn Russian would of course be “A jug of wine, a loaf of bread, and thou beside me in the wilderness,” nu?)

Thanks for taking on the generic surnames in English (miller, archer, fletcher, smith, wainwright, wheelwright, bowman, cooper, (no orthographer that I wot of), chandler, baker, {glazier?}, leech, ({phlebotomist?)} …

And the Russian patronymics (orlova, orlovi, etc. (was distracted trying to see if I could spot the junction of wig and scalp–no, really! Nothing to do with {belle poitrine,} promise!!)

Now, what about Spanish surnames? And do they really reveal a matrilineal society?

    More candidates:

{Moeity}. {Metes & bounds}. {Shanks Mare} or {shanksmare}. (The “metes” are visible all over New England–often embedded in the sidewalk, as six by six inch squares of granite. However, they go about six FEET into the ground–they’re meant to remain in place ’til the end of thyme or basil, whichever comes first.)

    Also {prurient}, {Arawaks}, {athabaskan}, {moil}, {ganef or gonif} {klezmer} {adscititious}, {loblolly as in loblolly pine}, {whippersnapper}, the ever-popular {bra and Howard Hughes engineering efforts to build one for gal-friend Lana Turner}. Could Lana have been the prototype for {“the Spruce Goose”?}.

    {Euphuism} , political {euphemisms, aka lies, obfuscations, obscurantisms}.

Ahh, here’s a swamp to drain: the broadcast affectation of Britishisms in the American five-company Mediasphere: {on for later}, {knock-on effect for consequence} {on offer for for sale}, the British plural pronymics instead of the American singular, e.g., British Petroleum HAVE made a big ol’ mess, vs. BP HAS made a big mess–the Amellican version}.

    {plumb -bob, -line] {roman a clef, etc.}

Speaking of [euphemisms,} take a peek at the entire lexicon of The Wall Street Casino, where euphemisms have abounded, or the street is {rife} w/ {“ameliorative euphemisms”} trying to {obfuscate} the fact that almost every Wall Street Casino activity is {aleatory} and that there are no {investors} in the WSC, but rather {gamblers} placing {bets}.

Finally, should everyone join my small group XIVA, (membership is free), which stands for 14 As (or sometimes 15, depending on memory and mood) , which “explodes” to: The Association of August Americans Agitating Against Asinine, Adscititious, Addlepated, Ambiguous Acronyms, (& Almost Always Avoiding Altercations re: Alliteration)

    over ‘n’ out.

(bicept for maybe do something on homonym hell (there, their, they’re) antonyms, and a whole host of other -nyms. And howsabout the lingo of “rhetoric”: {stichomythia, paralipsis, parapraxis, apophysis–I come to bury Ceasar, not to praise him (praise, praise, praise), zeugma, paraphrasis, litotes, metonymy} and so on (check this site).)

    best,

    bw

Chaplin was opining at a time when Germany was being taken over by a ‘charismatic’ personality bent on establishing a fascist state. If you study historical events of the time, you’ll see that all Chaplin did was make parody of Germany’s dilemna. Turned out, he was right.

Gaga is shown to be sticking her proboscis into a place it has no business: trying to quash the rights of others which are guaranteed under the Constitution. If you study the events taking place in Arizona (and not in LA), you will see the real need to keep the Mexican drug cartels from waging their war in Arizona. Maybe you should read up on what’s going on there. The sheriff in LA doesn’t have a bounty on his head put there by Mexican drug lords, does he?

When I was a kid, THEY had computers but WE didn’t. I suspect the same was true for Evan Owen.

(Now where’s that file photo of ENIAC…?)

I wonder if there’s a really good translator of natural languages online. Probably not yet — or nyet (I mean, не пока). That was from Yahoo Babel Fish. It does all right with short phrases, sometimes, but is usually bad on longer chunks of text. Here’s what it made of your first verse:

“Words to the important very they enter into habit, they age, as dress. I want to shine to force anew the [velichestvenneyshee] word “PARTY”.”

I am not disagreeing with you about the situation that’s going on in Arizona and I don’t think Gaga has a total grasp of the dangerous situation with the Mexican drug cartels trying to muscle their way in to establish their turf. I say SECURE the border first in which I see this current administration, and YES the previous one, failing to do so at this point in time. Then they can address the issue of immigration reform (illegals).

This wiki article about ‘The Great Dictator’ may suggest that eventhough it’s a parody, Chaplin and others were well aware of what was going on at the time
Some say it is not completely applicable to anything today. It’s funny that History does repeat itself.

Is anyone following the heat wave in Russia? Things are bad over there, based on what I see in the news.

Marina, I assume your parents live in the Moscow area, but have the wherewithal to relocate temporarily. Are they doing all right?
