Telephone

Let’s look at the word telephone and does it still apply to cellphones?

Also, please forgive my singing!

Oh, and please thumb-up, comment and fave over at YouTube to help the video :-)

Technically, cell phones are radio transeivers (transmitter/receivers).
Remember when cell phones all had little antennas, like walkie talkies?
Antenna field strength concentrates radiation from the base of the antenna, and propagates away from the ground plane. Hence, the real danger from getting chronic minute doses of microwave energy right next to your head!

I personally think that all this connectivity really isn’t good psychologically. Someone sneezes in Africa and it’s posted on the web in less then 5 min. , whereas years ago it would take weeks before you’d here news from the other side of the globe. I think all this connectivity increases stress levels, we can’t keep up with all this information. I did an experiment once while I was living in California. I lived without a phone for 6 months. If I wanted to get in touch with someone I had to go over to their house. It did make things more inconvenient , but it did force me to actually spend more time physically with folks, and it slowed my life down dramatically. It’s amazing how years ago, when there were no cellphones, life went on just fine, now we couldn’t imagine how we could possibly live without them.

    Primitive telecommunications:

When I was a kid in the 1960s, my mother taught the family dog to howl on command and then told me to come home when I heard him. The dog’s howl carried all over the neighborhood, so pretty much whichever friend’s house I was at, I’d hear him and come home. The {smoke signal} is one of the oldest forms of communication in recorded history. It is a form of visual communication used over long distance.—–In Ancient China, soldiers stationed along the Great Wall would alert each other of impending enemy attack by signaling from tower to tower. In this way, they were able to transmit a message as far away as 480 km (300 miles) in just a few hours.

Polybius, a Greek historian, came up with a more complex system of alphabetical smoke signals around 150 BC. He invented a system of converting Greek alphabetic characters into numeric characters. It was devised to enable messages to be easily signaled by holding sets of torches in pairs. This idea, known as the “Polybius square”, also lends itself to cryptography and steganography. This cryptographic concept has been used with Japanese Hiragana and the Germans in the later years of the First World War.

leoNard…thanks for that info. I knew about Polybius, but I had no idea smoke signals were used by the Chinese. Awesome stuff! Of course you’d have to hope that the wind didn’t get your message all messed up…a message of ” hurry it’s those damned Mongolians!! could wind up being ” hey what’s for dinner?” Of course that would have been a rhetorical question. Everyone knows it would have been rice…no need to ask.

    Hi Marina,
Is there a time of the day or night that your website is down? About an hour ago whenever I tried logging in I would end up on your YT channel. I was thinking about technology especially after watching a History Channel program on the subject matter. It seems to me that once technology is established, it leaves itself wide open for abuse. When ever I go through a Roundabout it is required that I sing this song. Back in the day I had Telephone Line (ELO) on my answering machine. I used the part that went “ok, so no one’s answering but could you just let it ring a little longer, longer, longer. I’ll just sit tight, through shadows of the night, let it ring forever more…” My Mother-in- Law hated it. :!:

Thank you for posting another video. I love your videos and want to think you sent this one “From Russia, With Love.” How interesting that when you left Los Angeles, they were having their coldest temperatures in July since 1926. But when you travelled to Moscow, they had the hottest weather since they started to record temperatures 130 years ago! Obviously, you are so hot, the weather in Moscow set records!

Your imitation of Lady Gaga was highly realistic, and very funny. I hoped you would dance in the hallway wearing a small bikini, just like Lady Gaga did in her video. You would look so sexy!
I hope you enjoy many wonderful times in Moscow, (the banya, the food, the movies, the fun) and then you come back home to us in California. We miss you!

I Googled invention of cans, this is what I got.

British merchant Peter Durand made an impact on food preservation with his 1810 patenting of the tin can. In 1813, John Hall and Bryan Dorkin opened the first commercial canning factory in England. In 1846, Henry Evans invents a machine that can manufacture tin cans at a rate of sixty per hour. An significant increase over the previous rate of only six per hour.

I remembered cans being used to preserve food for Napoleon’s Army and it was a new thing then.

    Got this from Wikipedia:

    History

In 1664-1665 Robert Hooke experimented sound transmission through a distended wire.[1] In the centuries before tin cans and paper cups became commonplace, other cups were used and the device was sometimes called the “lovers’ telephone”. During the 20th century, it came into common use in preschools and elementary schools to teach children about sound vibration.

I think I missed the reference, so that means I’m blissfully unaware! From what I’ve seen of “Lady” Gaga, she has one too many ‘a’s in her name! :x I’m a little more in touch than ancient Andy, at least I’ve heard of some of these people, even if I don’t listen to them (willingly). De gustibus non est disputandum .
Nevertheless, I think a great sorting process goes on over time with music; stuff that may have been popular at one time fades away, while the better quality music endures like a solid old chair.

WAY back in the early 80′s my parents got a portable phone which would interfere with AM radio broadcasts. It was a problem because at that time pops didn’t get us hooked up to cable TV so I had to listen to local sporting events on AM radio. Whenever someone called the house its electronic “ring” would be heard on the AM radio and if that phone was answered I’d hear the conversation……Which would be followed by me shouting “Get off that phone! I can’t hear the radio!”. Oh, get this! Despite having buttons the line was still rotary so if someone dialed on it I’d hear the clicking sounds!

BTW, you sound like me when my computer gives me trouble although I say much WORSE things than “This sucks ass!”

A human microchip implant is an integrated circuit device or RFID transponder encased in silicate glass and implanted in the body of a human being. My first post on HotForWords! I really enjoy Marina’s lessons – they do combine sizzle with substance.

I used a phrase today that I think would make an interesting topic for one of Marina’s future lessons: “Mum’s the word”. Kind of a strange phrase when you think about it. M-W gives the etymology of “mum” as “probably imitative of a sound made with closed lips”. I do appreciate that etymology, but wonder if there might be other possible etymologies. How about it Marina? What is your take on “Mum’s the word”?

Actually it was Professor AB Rhinestone who invented the telephone aeons ago he just never got the credit for it.

Professor AB Rhinestone also invented a time machine for a specific amusement he desired to achieve and that he did. That’s another story for another time and another place though.

Where are you, Marina? Moscow Central Jail? Very interesting about the foghorns. I’m surprised you didn’t work a connection (no pun intended) between the string phone and a string bikini!
I have a word request, appropriate to the passing of PedanticKarl. He was indeed a class act, and I will miss his posts here. What is interesting to me is that people address their thoughts to him as if he were here or somehow able to read them. I don’t know if the writers actually believe he can read them (I don’t; if a soul is in Heaven, he is free of earthly concerns) OR, is it merely the literary device of { apostrophe } ? And what is the connection between that idea and the punctuation mark {‘} ?

No, I captured the animations with Dazzle DVD Recorder from my own video game “Bully”. I played and replayed it, creating maybe 10 different save points on 2 memory cards (In case I have to go back and retry or use possible clips in certain missions or areas).
It took a lot of planning and figuring out.

Hey GP*, I wasn’t being lazy I was just trying to keep up with modern communication. You know things like: MYOB, ASAP, BTW, TNX, PDS, SWL, SWL, NAVY, SMH, LOML, HRUD, DD,DIL, SIL, LOOP, DS, DGD, DGS,DH, DW, IDTS, LIB, CUL, ASAP, AFAIK, BRB, AFJ, BTW, BBL, BCNU, BAK, AFK, AFAIR, BBIAF just to name a few. I use the phrase “back in the day” because that song is about 34 yrs old (I hate that realization). Two of my friends and myself took a trip to N.Y. via Canada. The song just came out, so we heard it several thousand times on the way. Got really burnt out on it but yes, it was one of my favorites, too. No cell phones on that trip. When it was required to call home it was a gas station or truck stop and lots of quarters. “Back in the day”? It would be like if you were a teenager or so listening to Telephone Line, you would choose instead to listen to your parents music from about 1942. The old and the new.

i have a question for you….. first how come there is a range of words for groups of different animals? like a ‘pride’ of lions or a ‘murder’ of crows or an ‘exaltation’ of larks?
and how is it incorrect to mix them up? a ‘murder’ of ducks….’flock’ of crows….. ‘schools’ of fish but not ‘schools’ of whales…. no, whales travel in ‘pods’…..
im fascinated as to the range of words used to name groups of animals a ‘clutch’ of eggs a ‘litter’ of puppies……a ‘bloat’ of hippopotimus, a ‘float’ of alligators or crocodiles

    {unknown word or process, direct reproduction?}

I was working at a construction company and someone showed me a brochure for a machine that bends metal tubing. When I looked at the picture of the machine I noticed the machine itself looked like it was made with a metal tubing bender… same machine.
So if you buy the machine you could make more of the same machine with it.

This was very interesting to me and I only thought of this again because the link thing I made for Marina… Make link with text. It is a link maker and I just used it to make the link to it.

What do you call this type of process?

The only other examples I ever came across are… you can magnetize something with a magnet thus making another magnet.

And one time I made a webpage that encrypts source code of webpages. So of course I encrypted the source code of the encryption page with itself. The only problem was if you went to the page and viewed source… it would be easy to decrypt using the same page itself.

Does anyone know what to call this? It is not simple or regular reproduction, it is direct? It is like bacterial or viral but large scale size.

    my daily w0rd request: {war.ning}—web-sourced

    Uncle John’s Prize Pullet
Uncle John was in the fertilized egg business when I was young. He had several hundred young layers, called pullets, and 8 or 10 roosters whose job was to fertilize the eggs.

My uncle kept records, and any rooster or pullet that didn’t perform well went into the pot and was replaced. This took a lot of time. So, my uncle got a set of tiny bells and attached them to his roosters. He could then sit on the porch and fill out an efficiency report by listening to the bells.

My uncle’s favourite was Brewster Rooster. A very fine specimen he was,but his bell had not rung all morning, so Uncle John went to investigate.

Several roosters were chasing pullets, with bells ringing. Well, Brewster had his bell in his beak so it couldn’t ring. He’d sneak up on a pullet, do his job, and walk on to the next one.

Uncle was so proud of Brewster he entered him in the county fair, and he was an overnight sensation.

The judges not only awarded him the “No Bell Prize”, but also the “Pullet Surprise!”

*Marina* In computer graphics, a sprite is a two-dimensional image or animation that is integrated into a larger scene.

    Here is a Graphical Explanation

In easy terms, have you ever seen the little pokemon figures? Those are a perfect example.

Sprites will not make your page load faster because they are 2 dementional. Rather then 90% of the pictures on here are 1.

To make it even more complicated, sprites combine with “.gif” images to create the 2-D moving effect.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/docsavage7/ Michael

Yes, in the late 60′s in NYC there were a couple of places that were really ” hotspots” for dancing. One was the ” Cheetah ” club, it was dance club mostly attended by blacks. Then in the Village there was the ” Circus ” attended by hippies. I saw Sly and the Family Stone there. The Cheetah would play mostly R&B and Soul…the Circus, more Rock and psychedelic stuff.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/docsavage7/ Michael

The ” Circus would close at 4:30am and they would play the same song at closing time…it was by the Chambers Brothers: George Chambers , Joe Chambers , Lester Chambers , Willie Chambers , Brian Keenan… The song was ” Time has Come Today”.

Chase, I think Marina is asking you to do this kind of test work out on your own site, and not hers.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/melikadothechacha/ Me Lika Do The Cha Cha

bada bing! That worked good

My thought process goes like this:
    - Less than sign
    - a href=
    - quotation mark
    paste link
    - quotation mark (don’t miss this one)
    - greater than sign (or this )
    text for link
    - less than sign
    - /a
    - greater than sign

    the less than/greater than signs,
    quotation marks and forward slash
    are special characters delineating
    places where (nested) variables
and instructions are read by the
    interpreter.

I sometimes get going too quick
and start a line with, say a bold
    (b) instruction and then f*ck up
and close using the close link
    instruction (/a) and the result
is the whole line stays bold.

That’s when I’m glad Marina gives
us time to edit comments

It’s a lot to pick up on, but with
repetition it becomes a no-brainer

    * I tried using the actual signs and the interpreter pooched it all up! Thank you edit command…

Marina, dear teacher, I can forgive many things, but not for calling whatever it was you were doing “singing”.
    Painful, yes. Singing, no.
The iphone is a good phone, it’s just that Apple chose a crappy carrier, but that’s part of their corporate philosophy of controlling everything related to their devices. I guess the story about the cups with the string was the “Hooke” in this story, eh?.
Maybe if you tied a string between your bra cups your pectorals could talk to each other. If they gain knowledge from the exchange of information and ideas maybe they would not be called “boobs”.
Seriously for a moment, we have seen you now as a blonde and a brunette. Will we ever see you as a redhead? Isn’t there some superstitious belief in Russia that women with red hair have the devil in them or some such belief?
Is there some saying you can teach us in Русский язык about redheads?

Right On, That is an excellent song

Hey, here’s a song that seems as relevant today as it was forty years ago.
    ….And the band played on.

    People movin’ out
    People movin’ in
Why, because of the color of their skin
Run, run, run, but you sho’ can’t hide
    An eye for an eye
    A tooth for a tooth
Vote for me, and I’ll set you free
    Rap on brother, rap on
    Well, the only person talkin’
‘Bout love thy brother is the preacher
    And it seems,
    Nobody is interested in learnin’
    But the teacher
    Segregation, determination, demonstration,
    Integration, aggravation,
    Humiliation, obligation to our nation
    Ball of Confusion
That’s what the world is today

The sale of pills are at an all time high
    Young folks walk around with
    Their heads in the sky
Cities aflame in the summer time
    And, the beat goes on

    Air pollution, revolution, gun control,
    Sound of soul
    Shootin’ rockets to the moon
    Kids growin’ up too soon
    Politicians say more taxes will
    Solve everything
    And the band played on
So round ‘n’ round ‘n’ round we go
Where the world’s headed, nobody knows
    Just a Ball of Confusion
Oh yea, that’s what the wold is today

Fear in the air, tension everywhere
    Unemployment rising fast,
The Beatles’ new record’s a gas
And the only safe place to live is
    On an indian reservation
    And the band played on
    Eve of destruction, tax deduction
    City inspectors, bill collectors
    Mod clothes in demand,
    Population out of hand
Suicide, too many bills, hippies movin’
    To the hills
People all over the world, are shoutin’
    End the war
    And the band played on.

They eventually wound up in eastern Europe, waging war and saving souls among the then-pagan Prussians, Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians, rather than against Muslims in the Middle East. Early in the thirteenth century, the area today known as Estonia was a mishmash of territory divided between three Catholic bishoprics, a native duchy controlling the northern quarter of the country, and territory owned by the Livonian Order (also known as the “Brothers of the Sword”), a branch of the Teutonic Knights. The {theremin} was originally the product of Russian government-sponsored research into proximity sensors. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theremin )link sourced ;-) The instrument was invented by a young Russian physicist named Lev Sergeivich Termen (known in the West as Léon Theremin) in October 1920[3] after the outbreak of the Russian civil war. After positive reviews at Moscow electronics conferences, Theremin demonstrated the device to Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin.{Lothar?} Lenin was so impressed with the device that he began taking lessons in playing it,[UNT: Strupsång, theremin och vägen inåt] commissioned six hundred of the instruments for distribution throughout the Soviet Union, and sent Theremin on a trip around the world to demonstrate the latest Soviet technology and the invention of electronic music. After a lengthy tour of Europe, during which time he demonstrated his invention to packed houses, Theremin found his way to the United States, where he patented his invention in 1928 (US1661058). Subsequently, Theremin granted commercial production rights to RCA.---- {ViBraTion, goOD}

Marina, first, I’m really glad that you could get to see your parents again. I hope you call them regularly. Next time why don’t you bring them over to the US so they can see how you live? Give them a tour of California – Disneyland, Universal studios, the beaches, Big Sur, Yosemite, the whole shindig and maybe the Grand Canyon too. We only get one set of parents and we have to love and cherish them while we can. I hope you get married and have grandchildren to show them some time soon. (Wise up girlfriend! Grandparents = free babysitters!)

Second, I have a word request: Festoon
I was replacing some lights in my car with LED’s recently and there is one type of automotive bulb called a “festoon” bulb. Why is a certain kind of light bulb called a “festoon” bulb?

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/docsavage7/ Michael

Sniperskaya…I want to address some things you’ve said , but please don’t think that I am putting you down personally, I just want to point out a few things. Life in Russia is very different, and sometimes we have this idea that America is so great who wouldn’t want to live here? While it is true we enjoy an abundant supply of goods, services and personal freedoms, there are things that other cultures have that make them superior to us in some very significant ways. For one thing, Russia is not a land of great cultural diversity. Though there is cultural diversity in different regions, what I’m getting at is that the people that live there come from people who have always lived there for generation upon generation. That fact alone has a tremendous psychological impact on a person. Their identities are tied to the land. Some of their homes have been in their families for hundreds of years. It’s not a land of a great many immigrants, certainly not like the USA. Our culture is much more transient. That ” rooting” has a tremendous benefit psychologically and emotionally…it gives a greater sense of belonging. One of the psychological plagues of our culture here in the USA is the sense of alienation, the sense of not belonging to anything. With all our freedoms, financial abundance…etc, our country has the highest incidence of mental illness in the entire world. Don’t get me wrong, Russia is not without her problems…but you can’t take people who are probably in their 50′s or 60′s , who have lived there whole life in that cultural setting , drop them in LA, and think they’re going to love it…lol…ain’t happening.

  • sniperskaya

Marina was talking about visiting her parents, so when I suggested that she should “bring them over to the US so they can see how you live?”, I meant she should bring them over for a visit, not to live permanently. It would much easier and quicker for her parents to get visitor’s visas than to immigrate to the US permanently, нет?

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/docsavage7/ Michael

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/docsavage7/ Michael

What made me think that you meant for them to move here was your remark … “(Wise up girlfriend! Grandparents = free babysitters!)” Somewhat difficult to babysit from Russia when the children are in LA.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/ohiocountryboy/ Ohio Countryboy

    Hello, sniperskaya.
Honeybees also {festoon} when they are hanging in a cluster. I believe festoon is related to feasts/festivities with hanging ornaments. Festoon bulbs are attached to the socket at each end of the bulb, so in a sense they hang as an ornamental light.

  • sniperskaya

I see the cause for your confusion, but I meant when they are visiting, or when you are visiting them -

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/fglrx/ fglrx

As you know, Russia is not in the US visa waiver program and receiving even a touristic visa may be almost impossible for the family members of the person who lives permanently in the US.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/melikadothechacha/ Me Lika Do The Cha Cha

I did some investigating about the word ‘festoon’. Festoon as a noun is used to describe flower garlands or party lanterns spread around in/or on a string; eg. Christmas tree lights are festoon lights.
The light bulb you describe is a cylinder with a finial wire filament which emits light along a ‘string’. I could find no specific reference to state this, but I believe the word festoon is used as a verb to describe the way the light is being distributed. Same thing applies for LED ‘strings’.

Marina may have more to say about the origin of the word festoon.

Traditional roots? {Slavic Paganism} From a dualist belief system

Unlike Greek or Egyptian mythology, there are no first-hand records for the study of Slavic mythology. Despite some controversial theories (for instance, the Book of Veles), it cannot be proven that the Slavs had any sort of writing system prior to Christianisation; therefore, all their original religious beliefs and traditions were likely passed down orally over generations, and potentially forgotten over the centuries following the arrival of Christianity. Prior to that, sparse records of Slavic religion were mostly written by non-Slavic Christian missionaries who were uninterested in accurately portraying pagan beliefs. Archaeological remains of old Slavic Cult images and shrines have been found, though little can be yielded from them without proper knowledge of their contexts, other than confirming existing historical records. Fragments of old mythological beliefs and pagan festivals survive up to this day in folk customs, songs, and stories of all the Slavic nations.

{Mosquitoes} have mouthparts that are adapted for piercing the skin of plants and animals. While males typically feed on nectar and plant juices, the female needs to obtain nutrients from a “blood meal” before she can produce eggs.

There are about 3,500 species of mosquitoes found throughout the world. In some species of mosquito, the females feed on humans, and are therefore vectors for a number of {infectious} diseases affecting millions of people per year.

There was a hippie hangout in Greenwich Village on West 4th and St Mark’s Place called The Electric Circus…spent a lot of time there…it’s a drug rehab now.

    Hey Michael,
West 4th (st.) and Saint marks place are both streets… they are parallel, they don’t intersect.
4th ave doesn’t intersect with St. marks place either… it’s called Astor Place west of Third ave.
St marks place isn’t in Greenwich village it’s in the East village.
I hope you weren’t a taxi driver

Marina, did this theme already come with the css from Buddypress profiles on the comments? I want the CSS from the buddypress profiles on my comments too, but I cannot seem to figure it out. If you wrote the CSS for the comments, would you mind sharing it with me?

CSS makes my mind go in circles.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/docsavage7/ Michael

Yes, you are correct…I was giving the general area…it was actually located on West 4th St. Greenwich Village is the name of the whole area…it’s commonly divided into the East and West Village…but it’s all Greenwich Village.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/marina/ HotForWords

No, I had to steal the code from the Buddypress theme and apply it to the WordPress theme.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/docsavage7/ Michael

Actually it was on St Mark’s, haven’t been down there in a good while. But the Whole of Greenwich Village is made up of The East Village and West Village…

Can you give the exact code, or CSS so I can do the same thing?

Does it involves comments.php, or User.css?

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/marina/ HotForWords

I have no idea.. I use the standard comments.php… it’s a matter of taking the code from buddypress that styles the parts and using it or renaming it to the same things as what’s used on the comments side of the WordPress theme. I can’t give you the code because I don’t know exactly what code it was and where it was.. I just changed random things here and there!

Ha, ha, I thought Marina was an expert programmer. It appears that we have similar programming styles: cut and paste, trial and error. I used this method on a social networking site which allowed CSS. Without any knowledge of programming, I was able to click on View and Page Source on the tool bar to achieve what I desired.

To prove that I do not know what is going on behind the wizard’s curtain, I have been getting error messages asking if I want to continue the script or not and that Adobe 10 flashplayer is crashing and my computer is too slow. Any techies out there should I keep the v. 10 or get an older version?

  • ethanfourr

Hey Marina! I got into a bit of a discussion with my bro the other day, about evolution (to an extent) and I brought up something I’d heard before that we might evolve to have four fingers (cuz the pinky is pretty useless) and then I said “thumbs are more independent than the rest” like it’s easier to pick things up with the thumb vs, with just the others. Anyways that got me wondering where did the expression {Five Finger Discount} come from? I mean some people don’t consider the thumb a finger

Belobog (the White God means the good)
Chernobog (the Black God means the bad) aka Satan

People who have met Marina in real life say she is even more beautiful than on screen. So if she was taller, she would probably have been a model.

Which sounds kinda boring, there are so many of them already. ;-) I think what Marina is doing is really interresting, very creative.

Also alternative energy is already pretty efficient and gets more efficient every year. On the other hand the fossil fuels get more destructive every year. But a lot of it is a political problem, for example the situation in the US: http://www.technologyreview.com/blog/energy/25545/

If your gonna spend more subsidies on fossil fuel than on alternative energy then you are doing it wrong, don’t you think ?

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/gootar/ ɦʘqɦʇɪʌɐɹb

Yes… I wish fossil fuels were not used at all.
Wind, solar, wave and others that do no damage are the way to go.

When they ask her … “How does it work?”

Another example of this is DNA. Given the proteins etc. for building blocks, DNA can make another DNA just like itself. The secondary DNA is (usually) chemically the same as the original. Also, like the original, the secondary DNA can again make another like itself ad infinitum. There are other examples of this such as fractal geometry.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/gootar/ ɦʘqɦʇɪʌɐɹb

DNA is another great example but it is also extremely small scale size. I’ve only come across 2 or 3 three things that were large size an also capable of self replication.

Hi, do you know which definition of flux he is talking about here…

“And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux.”

Self-assessment and summary of his own life…

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/bertrandr1872/ bertrandr1872

    Dear ɦʘqɦʇɪʌɐɹb,
If I am not mistaken, Russell is not using the word ‘flux’ in any technical sense. In this case, his use of the word ‘flux’ is simply a reference to the general change of stuff. You cannot step into the same river twice … The Pythagorean power is the mystery of how mathematics, which doesn’t change, manage to describe (at least partly) our world. The application of the unchanging to the changing or, more generally, unity in diversity. In gerneral, Russell is stating that he has tried to apprehend (mathematical) patterns in the world.
I hope that is some help. Russell is not using the concept of flux first made initially developed by James Clerk Maxwell. By the way, Russell was very discouraged as an undergraduate college student because non of the faculty ever heard of Maxwell. He was familiar with Maxwell’s work. This was around the late 1880′s, before Einstein, when Maxwell was the biggest name in physics. A Russell biographer once portrayed Russell as too big for his britches since he criticized his teachers in this regard when he was only an undergraduate.
    Yours,
    Larry

{COLD} How can cold have so many meanings? It can be someone giving the [cold] shoulder, the [cold] temperature, and

I was on a website that featured unusual things people have written while high. Here are a few of them, tell me what you think. . .

1.this is why we sleep, we sleep because if we controlled it our lives would be messed up. our bodies are putting us to sleep, not us. our bodies are all being controlled. we have to pull out our soul from within us. our inner soul. only then will we know true happiness.

2.There are forces that are controlling us, that do not want us to be happy. They invented confusion. There is a reason humans get confused. They are being confused becauses the forces do not want us to further know the information, the reason we repeat things, is because the forces are preventing us from getting new information. Every time you repeat a word on accident, they are controlling it. We must break this force. Try hard to break this force.

3.This is a message from god. I exist. I am within you. I am on your side. The goal of god is to maintain peace within yourself. Whether or not you question if god exists, believe that there is a reason to life. The closer you are to death, is just the closer you are to understand the meaning of life, where you disappear from the others who have yet to discover. We are scared of death, and this is why we live. So why do we age. We age because there is a time. There is a time limit, we are in a race to find out the meaning of life BEFORE we die. When you see a person die,

4.Is the world more positive or negative? There really are for forces. Use the force in skywalker, the phrase is telling us there are reason things have to be short. This is why the most we can do for ourselves is try the best to be and stay as happy as possible. There is no such thing as being crazy. There really is a reason for each emotion, ask yourselves why you feel that emotion. It is because the forces wanted it to be that way. But you pray to those forces that they shift the way your fortune goes. This is why nobody knows what happens after death. But somehow when a person dies, they have found out the meaning of life. It is when you die, u understand the meaning of life. Not after it.

5.This is why on Sunday’s, the pope or the priest will tell you ‘go in peace’. There is only so much information about God that you can take all AT ONE TIME. You must get to know God. You must smoke the weed. You must smoke as often as you can. Remember, you are in a race. If you think you are crazy right now because you are still reading what is on this paper, believe God that you are not crazy. When people tell you ‘that’s crazy’ because they think God doesn’t exist, they are really THE LUNATICS. They have weak power, remember God is within you. Hippes and people who will smoke this herb, that has been banned, are more peaceful BECAUSE they have the peace of God within them. They are closer to it. When they become one with it, and do not worry because Life and the bad times WILL go by fast. Do not fear death, cheat death by having good times. Cheat death. Find the meaning of life.
6.All the leaders are bad. The president is bad. Oprah is bad. The bad force has conquered them. These are lost souls. THEY won’t discover true happiness. It is sad but true. All the actors and actresses are bad. Do NOT become an actress. Do not be in the limelight, do not be jealous of those who are celebrites. You must not be jealous. The thing you desire for the most, is what you must stray away from. For example, a person may want to be an actress, because they think fame is a wonderful feeling. Although you may be rich and buy as much things as you want and think you are happy on an island in Bermuda, it is the person suffering that are trying to express their feelings about God. Yes, you will suffer if you or your family goes to church or tries their best to show their worship for God, the forces will try to keep you away. It is when you understand what it’s like to smoke marijuana and feel closer to understanding the world, is when you will suffer the most. But fear not, keep trying to know God. You can fool the forces. It is possible to. This requires more smoking of marijuana. If you find a buddy, who has expressed while on marijuana he feels like he/she is Closer to God. You must smoke with this person. You must do it as soon as possible. You must smoke the marijuana together and discuss your thoughts with each other, WRITE IT DOWN. Write it down, as soon as you say it. Do not delete what you write. Do not delete it and think it is crazy because you were high while typing this. DO NOT DELETE. DO NOT DELETE.
LIFE IS A GAME. The forces just tried to fool you because you wrote do not delete twice. You have realized that the force is against you. The force just tried to mock you. It was suppose to be game over at the second sentence of do not delete. Remember that you are smarter than the force.
Message from God: A person who keeps his cool, and fools other people who are brainwashed, and convinces your family and friends not to believe that you are crazy, THAT PERSON is going through the phase of discovery. That person is YOU. A person fails getting to know God, if they act crazy to more than one person. If you show this to your brother or sister(you must show to the one who smokes, you must not show this to a person who does not smoke marijuana) Even in life, there will be signs of God. There will be signs God exists. It is when a person is born. It is when you feel beautiful moments.
“What should you do based on this research? If schizophrenia runs in your family, then you should avoid marijuana.” Is from THIS WEBSITE: http://mentalhealth.about.com/od/schizophrenia/a/potsz.htm

Notice how they convince the people who smoke marijuana, who are coming closer to God, to stay away from the plant? Because they do not want you to find out, because you are SO MUCH closer to finding out about God than those who do not.
Even disorders like OCD do not exist, that person all along was closer to knowing God so they distal establish that disorder early on in someone’s ‘life’.

Delete…pretty darn exciting! Jah should contribute here— http://www.hotforwords.com/forum/topic/420-revolutionwho-wrote-this- In the USA, cocaine was sold over-the-counter until 1914. It was widely used in tonics, toothache cures, patent medicines, and

chocolate cocaine tablets. Prospective buyers were advised (in the words of pharmaceutical firm Parke-Davis)

that cocaine “could make the coward brave, the silent eloquent, and render the sufferer insensitive to pain”.

When combined with alcohol, it yielded a further potently reinforcing compound, now known to be cocaethylene. Thus cocaine was a popular ingredient in wines, notably Vin Mariani. Coca wine received endorsement from prime-ministers, royalty and even the Pope.

One medical use that was found early in the history of cocaine, and which the drug is still used for today (rarely), is that of a good surface anesthetic. Beginning in the late 1880s surgical procedures using local anesthetics (numbing a specific area to pain) were starting to be used instead of general anesthesia (rendering a person unconscious).

This was due to experiments that were conducted by William Halstead, using cocaine. William Halstead was one of the four founders of The Johns Hopkins Medical School. He is often referred to as the Father of American Surgery.

Unfortunately William experimented on himself by injecting cocaine, to see if surgery could be performed using cocaine as a local anesthetic. After experimenting for a time, he became addicted.

    Dear rosiecheeks,
You have asked people what they think and here is my response.
The website you sited recommends that some people should stay away from pot. More specifically, those who tend to experience paranoid like symptoms. What that amounts to is this: If you tend to feel uncomfortable, scared and anxious when smoking pot, then smoking pot is not for you. Would you recommend pot to all people to people regardless of how it made them feel? As to whether pot brings people closer to god, I think that’s a bit of a stretch. Smoking pot may cause certain chemical bodily changes. Those changes may be identical to the changes that certain mystics experience. The subject state that is brought on either by meditation, pot, whatever (scientitist can reproduce it using fancy magnets on certain parts of the brain), might or might not bring us closer to God. All we really know is that many people, but not all, experience a certain subjective state. Your last sentence is about mental health disorders such as OCD. While I would completely agree that there are serious problems with the mental health profession and its use of (sometimes poorly defined) diagnosis, mental illness is a real tragedy. I have work in the field for many years in many settings – general psychiatric hospital, head injury rehab facility, adult developmentally delayed group home, alcohol and drup detox facility, adult developmentally delayed day program, etc. While I have many areas of disagreements of the professionals that I saw in the field, I have been repeatedly struck by the reality of the mental illness sufferings of many of the patients, residents, clients, etc.
I would look forward to hearing more of your thoughts on the subject. I hope your evening goes well.
    Yours,
    Larry

    Dear Bert,

Thank you for your reply. Actually, i find that when people are paranoid from smoking pot, it is usually because they are doing nothing productive after smoking. For example, if you were to ride your bike or do some homework/reading or even going for a run or exercising, or perhaps watching a movie, you would be less likely to experience paranoia. (less likely)

Also, i read that pot does not cause schizophrenia, instead it brings it out in somebody where the disorder was already pre-existing. Or that it can bring out the disorder earlier in a person who is smoking pot opposed to somebody who is not. But, how can pot really cause schizophrenia? It may cause short-term symptoms (definitely seems like what the people who had written those messages while on marijuana were experiencing)but how can it, in-fact cause long-term symptoms? That is my new question. Thank you for your input though.

    Dear leoNard,
Dr. Halstead got the idea for the use of cocaine from an 1884 article Uber Coca by Dr. Sigmund Freud. Freud’s father had an eye operation using cocaine. Freud later regretted promoting cocaine when a friend of his became addicted to it.

    Dear rosiecheeks,
I knew someone years ago, named Larry Young, who was an expert in the field of diagnosis. I do not see eye to eye with him, but I will readily acknowledge that he knew far more about these things than I ever will. One area where he and I disagreed is whether diagnosis should reflect what is going on behind the scenes or right up front. As related to schizophrenia, should it be diagnosed by behavior, which is up front, or be chemical imbalance, brain differences, genetic differences, whatever, which is behind the scenes. He went for the former. I go for the later. So, allowing that people far smarter than I see othewise, I believe that pot cannot cause schizophrenia even if it sometimes causes schizophrenia-like symptoms. I would also add that each person is biochemically unique. So one persons reaction may be completely different from another simply because their body is different. As for the some of the simularities in brains of pot smokers and schizophrenics, it remains to be seen what the significance is.

Larry Young is not you, amirite?

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/bertrandr1872/ bertrandr1872

    Dear rosiecheeks,
No. Larry Young died a number of years ago. I knew him when I was an undergraduate at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN. Larry Young worked part time at Hazelden, which is a high quality place for alchohol rehab. Larry Young would have liked to retire. He was getting on in years and didn’t need to work. He was so good that Hazelden would not let him retire. They compromised and he worked part time. In his home he had huge wall of professional journals in the field that he had collected over several decades. He had probably read most or all of them. He knew his way around the field like few others. He was close friends with several of my professors. If I could go back in time I would like to learn much more from him. He had a lot to offer.
By the way, neither am I really Bertrand Russell who was born in 1872 and died in 1970. But Russell is one of my many heroes.

This is freakin’ amazing… a marijuana ad (actually anti) is over on the right side of my page

I like to call marijuana “alien plant life intelligence” anyone that smokes it begins to develop a symbiotic relationship with it and it slowly takes over their life.
Did you ever see the movie “Invasion of the body snatchers” it’s something like an analogy of it.
Anyone under symbiotic control will do everything they can to ensure the survival of marijuana. Even putting their own life and well being at risk. What’s up with that… it a freakin’ plant. Live your life for your family or your “life’s work”… not a plant.

Some people actually can handle it thought… you need to have a very powerful and creative mind like the beatles or jimi hendrix. For anyone else it is a ridiculously stupid thing to do.

@marina can you add something to “Recent Comments” so you can see “older recent comments?” like with the tweets?

That’s cool… the general change of something is what I was shooting for when I was trying to come up with a name for the theory (because the particle in my theory changes shape to become anything in question).
I was in a calculus class and I knew of Isaac Newton’s fluxion and also in the movie “Back to the future” there is a flux capacitor. I searched all over the internet (at the time in ’98) and my theory name was completely unique. Now it is all over the freakin’ place (in mean the word {flux}) in science and other references.

I think it would be pretty easy. Check a flag in the database then change the ability of the reply button to non-working (make it a dummy).
That site I found is a gold mine. If you ask a question… there are guys that just about fight over answering it. And they only answer if they really know what they are talking about. Even really specific things. Plus… wordpress is very popular so I bet someone figured that out already
