That was an excellent lesson Marina!!!
Loved it and the ending.
As of today, Germany is in 3rd place

Marina! You rock! Soccer was my life, and I always wondered where the terms were created and exchanged. This was a nice follow-up video, and perfectly timed with the 2010 FIFA World Cup!
As for who my favorite team was, it was obviously Team USA. I was very proud of them, and only wished they could have done a bit more to make it deeper in the tourney, but they still did a pretty good job.
Thanks again for taking an interest in my life long love of this great game!
Hi iluv2cutfarts,
I saw your comment about the Jabulani ball. I had been reading about the ball and the various critiques since the World Cup started. There are several videos on YouTube that demonstrate the aerodynamics of the ball and what makes it go so fast. How did you get a chance to touch or play with one?
I just also read where the FIFA committee will be looking into the various ways of bringing technology to help with goals that are not observed by the referee such as happened with the Germany vs England match and also the various types of player fouls. Even though I understand the offsides, it seems pretty complex and it seems quite a daunting task for the referees to get it straight which is dependent on where they are located at the moment of the foul.
hawkfire0329
No I haven’t been watching the world cup I’ve been watching the Tour de France. It’s really exciting! Can u check out the origin of the word {personality}? Thanks much (=^_^=)
Hello, Miss Marina.
At what point did the ball change shape? While soccer is called soccer in some countries, and football in others, the ball is a different shape for rugby and American football.
Did early rugby play with a round ball, but change to the oval ball as it was easier to carry and you can throw it farther and more accurately?
Have I watched any World Cup soccer this year? As opposed to watching it other years? ;-) No, I have not watched any World Cup soccer this year, or any year for that matter. The only soccer games I have ever watched involved some 5 year old kids that I knew.
Tried soccer for three years as a teen. I sucked! Scored ONE goal the whole time…..in my first game. Opposing golie slapped down the ball with his hands, it went off my knee and went in. I didn’t see it as I tripped and wound up almost splattered on the goalpost. As was seen in my last post I’m not a big follower of The World Cup & I HATE that vuvuzela! I was into the old N.A.S.L back in the early 80′s with the NY Cosmos. I don’t get into the NFL that much unless the local team is in the Superbowl. Last time they were in some guy caught the ball on his helmet which would lead to the winning touchdown.
My big sport is hockey though I’m losing interest in that. I don’t like the shootout and the fact that the losing team gets a point. It also doesn’t help that the team I follow, the NY Rangers, have been a “one hit wonder” in Stanley cup championships during the 35 years that I’ve followed them. Looks like they will go another 54 years before winning it. I’ll be 81 when that happens
I mentioned in the vuvuzela lesson that soccer really doesn’t do it for me. Give me a full field of fire breathing, 700 horsepower sprint cars on a nice tacky quarter mile dirt track, hand me my Canon, and life is good.
I worked with a dude who, after a season of watching his grandkids play soccer, renamed it “magnetball,” ’cause all the kids would run in a tight swarm as if attracted to the ball, and it would pop out of the scrum, kicked or simply run over, and the little tykes would take off after it en masse as if the ball were a kid magnet. Usually a 0-0 tie but he found it amusing.
Oh, and Teach: The twin pony tails are way too cute. xodc

The Eighty Years’ War, or Dutch War of Independence, (1568-1648)[The Dutch States-General, for dramatic effect, decided to promulgate the ratification of the Peace of Münster (which was actually ratified by them on May 15, 1648) on the 80th anniversary of the execution of the Counts of Egmont and Horne, June 5, 1648. See Maanen, H. van (2002), Encyclopedie van misvattingen, Boom, p. 68.] began as a revolt against Philip II of Spain, the overlord of the Habsburg Netherlands. The war ended with the Treaty of Westphalia. This revolt partly succeeded with the secession of seven provinces which formed the Dutch Republic.

The last time I watched a football game Vince Lombardi was coach and Bart Star was quarterback. Soccer was just starting to be talked about as a school sport when I was leaving high school. Sports just doesn’t hold my interest. People always seem to be apologizing for competition with some unproven phrase: “Competition is good” “Competition builds character” “Competition is good for business” etc. Competition usually means someone looses. And if we {play} and watch competitive sports how do we expect to change things in the real world? Competition is the law of the jungle. Cooperation is the law of civilization.” – Eldridge Cleaver Homework: Bad Student says, “hey teach, I ain’t doin’ it.”

Thanks Karl,
Yeah, I noticed. It timed out before I could correct it. Let me try this time. My Dad’s Team Photo
He’s lower center with his fingers on the ball.
There is something really strange about the shape of a football. When I was in high school I was a really small (4′ 11”) guitar-playing-long-haired-hippie type (but I didn’t do drugs or weed).
And if I was on the football field with the big strong quarterback of the football team… He could get a run-up start and throw the football as far as he could and I would catch it and stay in the same place. Then I could just stand there and throw it back and have it go way over his head, a lot further than he could throw.
No-one ever figured out why.
Maybe it’s the way you hold it and release, or the angle you let go? Like the perfect parabola relative to the speed or something? How much spin?
Very nice team photo. I see where you get your handsome look and you must be very proud of your dad. I read the history page of the Maritimo Sports Clube web site. I used Google translator and it worked pretty well.

Ummm… I really meant to say “there website” instead of the correct “their website.”
I was talking with someone that was Russian and they asked… “where website?” with the Russian accent. It reminded me of the young Frankenstein “werewolf?” joke.
So I answered “there website” so they could understand me better.
Anybody believe me? I also have a bridge for sale
Hello, gravityboy.
There are a myriad of variables that could have affected the distance thrown.
High school quarterbacks are usually picked because of their ability to memorize plays, or throw accurately, or familial social standing. How far they can throw is usually not one of the criteria for selecting a quarterback.
Often, smaller, lithe people are more agile and faster than larger, stronger people. How fast you throw the ball can affect the distance it goes. You may have had better coordination than the quarterback.
How concentric the ball spins affects it. A wobbly spiral won’t retain energy like a tight spiral will.
The rate of spiral can affect it. For example, the rifling grooves in a rifle barrel is measured in twist per inches. As the rate of twist tightens, accuracy and distance increase, but if twist becomes too tight, accuracy and distance fall apart.
You may have been able to naturally throw the ball with the optimum rate of twist to maximize throwing distance, and you could balance out the best allocation of energy towards twist and forward force.
The angle it is thrown can also affect things.
It may also have been something as simple as him throwing into a headwind, and you were throwing with a tailwind.
I concur. I also appreciate the focus being on education with a little entertainment, rather than the focus being on entertainment, with minimal education thrown in. I would have liked a little information on the change of the ball shape in relation to the name changes, but that’s just me.
Hi fglrx,
I disagree with your assessment that Marina has gone back to her previous style of making videos. Pick any ten or more contiguously presented videos in any time frame and you will see an interesting pattern. Typically, you will favor 20% of them and you will grade 80% of them with mixed or negative feelings. Even if Marina were to create her videos in a precise and scientific manner where each video represented the video you see above, you would still only favor 20% of them. Why is that so? Here are some of the reasons why it is difficult for most casual viewers to give an objective account of Marina’s videos.
1. From Marina’s own lips (para-phrased); most words do not lend themselves to a visual presentation. Marina has said that she looks for words that have an interesting back story related to the origin of a word. Most words really don’t have interesting stories behind them, nor is the educational content for many words that interesting, or if it is, it is not easily presented in a visual medium.
2. Most of the videos that have some of the best educational content have the fewest views. Why? Most people’s eyes gloss over when presented with academic matter that does not interest them. When Marina creates an interesting skit, the word is more memorable and the video is more enjoyable to watch.
3. Each one of us has some negative bias against some words that we detest for some reason similar to a chalk making that awful bone chilling sound on the blackboard. None of us are ever that objective in evaluating all of the videos in the same way. That can be witnessed by the list of Favorite Videos over in the Forum. You can see the divergent views in how people see the videos.
4. Most of the words that Marina does that are labeled as slang, vulgar and words with sexual definitions have a cultural bias built into them. No matter how educational Marina makes those videos, there is a personal bias against those videos which has nothing to do with the video but has everything to do with the person watching it.
5. Many people miss the point of the comedic interludes. The visual gags and comedic elements of the video have an excellent educational purpose that most people miss. Some of the visual comedic icing contains references to cultural ideas and references to human emotions and interactions. In fact, some of the best educational content comes from Marina’s visual content. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words. Many people will miss the point of these visuals as can be seen by the comments on those video pages.
P.S.
Where do I get my information? I have diligently studied each video for over two years subjectively and objectively using a variety of analytical techniques. One of my sources of data comes from insightful comments made by very few people. Most comments are actually based on the viewer’s emotional reactions to videos with little or no actual feedback related to the salient content of the video.
I used to help my brother move his beehives. Vuvuzelas sound a heck of a lot like a hive of agitated honeybees after being bounced ten miles up a bumpy logging road on the back of a pickup truck to the fireweed fields. :o
Although I’m not really into soccer I did catch some of the World Cup Final earlier today with some friends who were into it. I would have to agree with the ABC sports commentators who said it was pretty much uneventful for most of the game except for maybe the last minutes of the extra time. Of course Budweiser was in on the action. Too much hype before a world championship can ruin the actual game itself. I think the Superbowl for the NFL (American football) has been a victim of this, but this is just my opinion. There are the few championship games or series that have everything exciting in it or they just turn out to be boring. I was rooting for Holland though.
The sports that I like to watch are Hockey and American football. And you know Marina that your native country has produced some awesome talent for the National Hockey League.
Now if the Boston Bruins can swindle a deal to get him.

Then each planet or star has it’s own unique synergy, this will need to be mapped if you plan to enter and land a magnetic craft. For instance, entering earth on it’s south pole with a neg. charged vector would be better than the north pole.
whatimeitis
In theory, if you drop a lead weight above each pole they should both land at the same time. However, it you drop a metal weight that is neg. charged, the North pole weight would hit before the South pole weight would hit.

The same theory would effect light spectrum displacement and could explain how light gets bent as it travels in the earths magnetic field. See rolling ball effect arguments. An object in orbits image could be seen like a image similar to an overhead projector does a slide photo. It could manifest it’s self from one quadrant into another quadrant from day into night in an arch of bent magnetic light. Therefore, you have UFO’s.

I’d have many mixed feelings, Evan. My Dad and I would discuss that very scenario. He’d always ask, “If it were the U.S. and Portugal who would you want to win?” I’d always answer, “The U.S.”, and I’d turn the question on him, and he’d say, “Portugal… but the U.S. would be my second choice if against another country.” It would go back to me and I’d answer, “Portugal, of course.”
World Cup year always brought us a little closer.
This year, if Portugal had won, I wouldn’t be able to bare it. He would’ve been so euphoric. Knowing he wasn’t around would’ve been so bittersweet for me – probably more bitter than sweet.

This was the first year I seriously got into football/soccer. I admit it was watching the US in sports bar that got me started, then I asked real fans about the rules, terms, etc. When they lost I started supporting Brazil/Brasil, but then they lost. After that I just watched to see who would win. I have to admit the last game turned out to be two hours of my life I wish I had back, but I was nursing a hangover, so its all good. :)
hmmm… everybody needs to stop the bashing and stop commenting on bashing with more bashing. I was thinking about some of the things I’ve written and I’m kind of ashamed of myself.
Marina is a nice Russian girl that has made a very popular website.
If someone new comes here they might see and read a whole load of crap and leave. This could be a lot more detrimental then you might think depending on who comes here… especially if she misses a new opportunity or an important contact.
This is not fair to her. This (at the moment) is her life’s work and she is doing a great job.
Think good thoughts.

I’m not sure if I’m following what you’re saying here gravityboy. I’ll be straight up with you, I wouldn’t say I’m an intellectual type but are you asking me which one I can relate too more? :???:
ummm… no, that “Who are you?” is the type of ultimate question one of those 2 types Existentialist or Transcendentalist would ask. I don’t really know I’m not up on them.
Like… “where do I belong in the universe”, “Can I be sure of anything?” Sometimes even if you think you know what they means you might not even be in the same ballpark.
I’m not too sure about Existentialism or Transcendentalism.
The profound saying that hit the nail on the head for me is Descartes “Cogito ergo sum” or “I think, therefore I am” I understand that a lot more than I would actually like to.
Hey Karl – I’m still somewhat involved with the sport. Not to the degree I was when I was playing competitively back in CA, but enough so that I keep in contact with those who do. I have friends at Nike, who got a hold of one of the Adidas balls (what a joke – hehe) and they sent it to me. My team here in Minneapolis tried it out, and we all pretty much agreed that it was way too light. I was able to go one step further and determine that in an above sea-level elevation that the ball would definitely take off even more because of this, and it just makes sense that most of the players who do not play in high elevation on a regular basis would be amiss with it.
All that to say that it still is a pretty decent ball, but not one that I would have recommended for the grandest stage of all in Soccer.
As for FIFA making the very needed changes to the game – it’s time. I’m a purist for the most part, and appreciate their old school sensibilities, but when you have goals go in, and the Ref’s Assistant misses it, something has to be done. That and the other various issues that came about from Free Kicks (such as the no-goal that happened with the US against Slovenia).
We shall see. I’m planning on going to Brazil in ’14 with a couple of my Brazilian buddies here in Mpls. Should be a great time.

isn’t you? I’ve been talking to them like they are and they have been answering the same way. WOW! My mind just got blown and it is wa-a-a-aay to early for that. I wonder if leoNard is fake, too. Naww, there can only be one leoNard
Well, just checked it out and you’re right. There’s someone who has the same name as mine but I assure you that’s not me. wtf?
Damn, I thought I had a unique name.

Imagine how I feel! I’ve had quite a few conversations with this person. They know all about HFW, though. IDK! Like somebody says, “BeeVee must investigate”. Cue the funky music!

Well – dating my left hand has gotten old over the years, and I’d still like to have a family of my own.
You are probably a wise ol’ minch though, and perhaps there are good reasons for concern, but I’d like to find myself a good lady and share the rest of my life with her.
Hmmm… some interesting comments from me or whoever you were talking to over there. A calico cat? facebook? bettywhite? Better cue up that funky music beevee. Maybe their needs to be an investigation. ;-)

“A good lady” There you have it, my man. They are out there, I know. You just have to hope that they don’t go through that dreaded metamorphosis that sometimes occurs usually at about the three month period. Like I always say, anybody can get along for three months. That is known as the honeymoon period were the sex is so freaky you can barely look each other in the eye in the morning and you DEFINATELY don’t kiss on the lips until the teeth have been thoroughly scrubbed. After that, its work.
beevee14
Now THAT IS the leoNard I’ve come to know. Let me guess. You don’t know what SVC is either, right?
a lot of people use the same password for different accounts on different websites.
So an unscrupulous website administrator from another website could actually go in and find the password you used to sign up.
This would allow him access to “everything you own” …if you use the same password over and over again. They could come back here to HotForWords or Facebook, Myspace and anything else you might have and hack you. This also includes your personal email account because you used that in the sign-up, so they have that too.
The user account names are right in your comment urls and on your home page (very public). So whatever you do… don’t use a default password (the same) for multiply sites.
iluv2cutfarts
Because you sniff too many farts, and it has demented your brain.
LOL! What an idiot. I guess you can do what you want but I’ve read the comments and it looks like public ridicule is the order of the day for our nefarious “VRock”. :???: Very wierd :???:

Too bad they cannot behave like men and just stop the bullsh*t (and yes I am including Michelle in that)

Yeah, I was talking about the imposter above but had to drop the comment. I WAS NOT CALLING YOU AN IDIOT! The fellas over there are blowing him up.
@beevee14, it looks like the impostor is really trying to fix the problem, so I won’t block him for now. It looks like he changed his avatar, and screen name

It is hard to behave like a man in a business setting when you have never had to before. I said it long ago that the night manager at 7-11 has more management experience than BHO did when asumed the throne. Nothing against night managers.
Its like a dog that has been shitting on the rug for two years. One day you beat its ass and it looks at you like ‘WTF!’ That is exactly what we have here. BHO has been shitting on America for so long and getting away with it: No, not just getting away with it, getting rich and accolades for it, that the peoples righteous anger to him right now is ‘WTF!’
But that doesn’t change the fact that he is an arrogant uber-asshole who has no business being in the position he is in.
The only person who really feels good about it is Jimmy Carter. That stupid son of a bitch can sleep at night knowing that he is not the worst ever. That is something Andrew Johnson never had the privelage of knowing!

Hey Evan, that phrase by Churchill is a funny one, and many articles have copied that phrase, but from what I understand from some article and sites, Churchill never said that phrase. Let me know if you want me to locate that detailed article. Here is an interesting site. Look in the upper left corner and look at the quote and see who may have said it.

Take many nails to make a crib but one screw to fill it. Man who go to bed with itchy ass wake up with sticky fingers. …. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Turgenev  The fathers and children of the novel refers to the growing divide between the two generations of Russians, and the character Yevgeny Bazarov has been referred to as the “first Bolshevik”, for his nihilism and rejection of the old order.
Turgenev wrote Fathers and Sons as a response to the growing cultural schism that he saw between liberals of the 1830s/1840s and the growing nihilist movement. Both the nihilists (the “sons”) and the 1830s liberals sought Western-based social change in Russia. Additionally, these two modes of thought were contrasted with the conservative Slavophiles, who believed that Russia’s path lay in its traditional spirituality.
Fathers and Sons might be regarded as the first wholly modern novel in Russian Literature (Gogol’s Dead Souls, another main contender, is sometimes referred to as a poem or epic in prose as in the style of Dante’s Divine Comedy). The novel introduces a dual character study, as seen with the gradual breakdown of Bazarov’s and Arkady’s nihilistic opposition to emotional display, especially in the case of Bazarov’s love for Madame Odintsova and Fenichka. This prominent theme of character duality and deep psychological insight would exert an influence on most of the great Russian novels to come, most obviously echoed in the novels of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky.
KGB Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti (Committee for State Security, former USSR)
You are a hot KGB Agent Marina to straight our CIA (Central Intelligence Agency), but their friends are really FBI (Female Body Investigators)!
P.S. Marina, I could not post on your other new site of the meaning of KGB, when you were in that beautiful Police Uniform being a KGB Agent! I bet the FBI — Federal Bureau of Investigation salutes you!
Maybe I’m just overreacting about that imposter situation. But if you’ve read a lot of comments here at HFW and compare them to comments at another site you might think that someone who comes here and is the head administrator from the other site is ripping comments and usernames from here and posting them on their site. Make any sense? Anyways it’s just a feeling and it has struck a bad chord with me. I guess I should say thanks for making me aware.
I guess anybody else who might know this isn’t bothered by it. So it’s probably not a big deal.
btw your question about Pink Floyd/Wizard of Oz. This is what you’re talking about, right? The Dark Side of OZ
That’s where you cue up the Darkside of the moon to play as the audio track to the Wizard of Oz and you turn the volume for the movie all the way down. Can’t remember if you start the music at the second or third MGM Lion roar just before the movie starts. I’d have to say, whoever thought up of this had way too much time on their hands.
actually I met to say ‘anybody else who might think this’
beevee14
Ok, I can understand how that moight make you or leoNard upset. However, I don’t think Pkid was aware of the situation. It was just some guy who was voyeur-ing(?) on boh sites and decided yo mix it up a bit. He is still over there(Tauros) and might be reading this right now. Shoot, you should take it as much respect that somebody wants to be YOU. Hell, they WERE you :!: He apologized and the fellas over there gave him about twelve and one half different kinds of hell. At least you know who has your back, right. ;-)
He had ME completely duped. We had quite a few PMs and his writing mannerisms were alot like yours. And leoNards! To be able to differentiate between those two styles on the fly, he deserves a freakin award. Maybe he is Stephen King :!:   ;-)
So, my understanding is that, you are accusing ME of this? Oh yea, I am the exact person. I just love to do that kind of stuff. I barely do SHIT on here, rarely even leave comments. My website is totally opposites from here. My website has a little less than 45 members! Compared to what? 15,000 here? I swear to god, I would block him from my blog right now with the I.P address. Here, I can over 100% assure you, that I AM NOT ANYBODY ELSE BUT ME! I will give you both I.P addresses even to confirm it! I have no idea who he was.. but the only reason why I didn’t block the Impostor was because he seamed to change the moment he got caught. (Tauros). He seemed he changed his ways… But I don’t really care for him.
Just because I am saying that I am not him, does not mean that the Impostor (Tauros) Did not rip off comments from LeoNard and/or VenomrocK, and comment them on my site, to make it look like he was you. I have no idea, if you want to ask him for yourself, I don’t care What the hell you do.
P.S I would never even care about this if I didn’t care about this site, and about you guys! The last thing I would ever do is advertise for my site on here.

I hope these links work right. When beevee provided a link to your site I went there to check it out and seen there was somebody there named venomrock who said they were from HFW and of course I know that’s not me. I do read other people’s comments here on HFW and I started to recognize comments on your site, like wait a minute, where have I seen these before? Like I said above for some reason this struck a bad chord with me. There are others but I spent just a little time gathering these plus I had a fucking hard time trying to login into my account here for some reason. I did get some info from a trustworthy source saying a website administrator could/can create other users to place them on their site. On someone who impersonates your online identity they could say and do things to assassinate your character. Does that make sense?
As far as you doing impersonations, I don’t know now and I like I said from above I could be overreacting. Maybe an apology is due although I can’t say I am thoroughly convinced. Kind of curios about Tauros though. Oh and I did notice that most of the ripped comments are mine and leoNard’s.
There are football, American football and Rugby in Russian.
