I had a Russian co-worker who was trying very hard to learn all our idioms. One day he came to me and said in his thick Russian accent, “I have been thinking very hard about this. Can you please tell me why the turkey is cold?” I have to admit I don’t understand this idiom either. Why do people quit “cold turkey”? Maybe an investigation is in order?

    Hello, Miss Marina.
A job worth doing is a job worth doing right. As long as you keep making these garbage Russian language videos, I will keep thumbing them down.

The storylines are REALLY lame, and I do not find them to be entertaining. You found success by entertaining with your looks. Please stick with the tried and true. For entertainment value, I consider these Russian language videos to be failing miserably.

You seem to be preoccupied with trying to see how fast you can say the Russian words, rather than saying them slowly and clearly so people can learn what the word is. In terms of educational value, I consider these videos to be failing miserably.

You should be ashamed of these videos. A job worth doing is a job worth doing right. You can do a lot better than this.

HEAR-hear!!! KGB I’ve Got A Feeling .. …In 1974 Bloomfield hooked up with a failed supergroup called KGB, from the initials of Ray Kennedy (co-writer of “Sail On, Sailor”), Barry Goldberg on keyboards and Bloomfield on guitar. The band had a rhythm section of Rick Grech on bass & Carmine Appice on drums. Grech and Bloomfield immediately quit after its release, stating they never had faith in the project. The album was not well received, but it did contain the standout track “Sail On, Sailor”. Its authorship was credited only to “Wilson-Kennedy”, and had a bluesy, darker feel, along with Ray Kennedy’s original cocaine related lyrics.

    Hello, LeoNard.
What is it exactly that you think Miss Marina does a wonderful job at? I think Miss Marina does a good job with her philology and etymology videos of word origins, especially her early videos that seemed focused on education. She combined substance with the style of her good looks. I think Miss Marina’s Russian language videos are complete garbage. She seems oblivious to putting real substance in the Russian language videos, and instead tries to get views based upon her past reputation and on her style alone. A video must have both substance and style, and the Russian language videos are severely lacking in substance.

I do not understand your question in regards to this years honey. Sweet is what this years honey will be.

I like some music. If I can find decent music, I normally listen to the radio while driving my vehicle, if I am alone. I rarely listen to any music at home.

actually, Marina…. Ohio CountryBoy is right. Every-time I visit you’re site my mom walks by and gets disgusted. She always says that it’s sad because people used to never show their bodies in a way like you do publicly. She calls you “hotforbabes” (although it’s kinda funny). I tried to warn you on the video names about sex.

And you get so many comments on youtube about them wanting to have sex with you, that there is more about that, then about you’re videos! That’s because you show off you’re body like that.

But my mom does say, you really hit the jackpot when it comes to publicity. Knowledge and sex appeal.

    @Ohio Countryboy
I see these “learning Russian” videos as a supplemental educational aid to other sources. I don’t really view them because I neither have the desire or need to learn Russian. But I can appreciate them because you have an actual Russian pronouncing the words with the proper inflexions, accent marks and other tones and pitches within phonology. (I’d have a very hard time with the word cão [Portuguese for dog] and spelling it out phonetically. I’d have to speak it so someone else could pronounce it correctly.) Plus, her videos aren’t dry and boring. They’re filled with color, movement, humor and sound. You also get some anecdotal information on Russian culture, too. I’ve seen and heard a few of these vids.

I have noticed that in the last five or ten topics that there are attempts at some people advocating their right to criticize or critique Marina or her work. What amazes me is that people assert their right to criticize, but I have yet to see an objective criticism of Marina’s work. For example, the page that Marina posted the other day called Critique is an excellent example of a critique.

Many of you have attempted to criticize or critique Marina’s work, and most of you have failed. All I have seen is opinions and personal attacks against Marina, incomplete personalized random comments, non sequiturs, whining and cynicism. What most of you have done is not advocate the right to criticize, but have advocated the right to express an opinion which reflect on the individual who made the opinion and it says nothing about Marina’s work.

Most of the opinions and critiques of Marina have come from angry and bitter people that like to whine and hear about their own misery and people that reflect their religious biases or other dogmatic beliefs.

For over a year now, I keep reading comments that say that Marina’s video were more educational than before. I have yet to see an example. All I hear is bad mouthing, but I have never seen someone actually demonstrate this to me. Each video has their strengths and weaknesses based on depth in which a word can be investigated. Some words lend themselves to a greater depth of inquiry and other words by their very nature may just be fluff. That has nothing to do with Marina’s videos. It’s the nature of the words themselves.

Could Marina go into the direction of rigorous academic analysis of words? Of course. Would people come to watch? Very few. Just look at the channels that have and are trying. Those YT channels are failing miserably. In fact, regarding Marina’s Russian lessons, there are very few free lessons on any language that are worth watching. Those few excellent lessons that do exist on YT have failed as a series. There might only be one or two lessons, but not a series. I suppose that the creators got tired of the hard work that is involved in creating a 5-10 minute language lesson.

If I had any of the negative criticism that many of you are throwing around, I wouldn’t be here. It seems as if some people are banging their heads against the wall expecting a different result. Is a negative critique of Marina’s work valid? Yes. I have never seen any valid negative critiques except personal whining.

In terms of constructive critiques, I have taken it upon my self to add constructive critiques whenever possible. Eleven months ago, Marina asked on the Forum, “What is your favorite HotForWords Video?” She didn’t ask why you liked the video, but I did that anyway. Why? I did it for myself because I knew that if I read my list of favorites at some later time, I would want to know why I said that a particular video is my favorite. Go check it out yourself. Go to the forum and notice that I was the first one to give my opinion and objective critique why I liked a video. Most people didn’t even know that certain videos were not even Marina’s.
    http://www.hotforwords.com/forum/topic/what-is-your-favorite-hotforwords-video

For those of you who have never met Marina and who continue to attack and whine about Marina’s personal dress and personal life are just whiners and angry people. You can express your opinions all you want, but it says nothing about Marina and says everything that is wrong with your life and your attitudes and it shows that you have no regard for honest and insightful criticism.

It’s your turn. Give me one objective example of Marina’s video that is not educational. If it is an opinion, say so. If it is an objective critique, prove it and give examples.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/pedantickarl/ pedanticKarl

    Hello, Miss Marina.
What does how hard a person works to make a video have to do with a video being thumbed up or down? It doesn’t. Videos are thumbed up or thumbed down based upon the end result. Thumbing up or thumbing down is not a measure of the effort put into making the video.

During an interview, you once said that you didn’t care if people fantasized about you naked, AS LONG AS they learned something. Does it still matter to you if viewers learn something, or is all you care about now if they view the video so you make money, regardless if they learn anything or not? (You have said that click language is your favorite language.)

It takes a special person to be critical of someone they look up to in ways. It requires honesty and caring, and people with those characteristics are definitely special. I am not trying to be critical to be malicious. I have tried to be constructive in my criticism, and tell you specific things that needed improved. In ways I admire you, and I am disappointed to see you put out videos like these.

You seem to think that people watch your videos for your benefit. It’s the other way around. People watch videos for their own benefit. They want to get something out of it. The video creator is rewarded with advertising money.

If you don’t like me thumbing down your Russian language videos, then you need to address the problems in your videos. Problems were brought to your attention, and you were given the opportunity to correct those problems. You chose to pretend the problems didn’t exist, and you kept putting out Russian language videos that were garbage.

That philosophy didn’t work for Toyota, and it won’t work for you. Trying to sweep problems under the carpet always comes back to bite you.

In order for me to learn how to say “prostitye, ya nye ponyemayu” I need to know the proper enunciation, clearly and distinctly. You make some fast mumbling noises in the video.

One of the usual teaching methods for teaching new words is to compare sounds in a new words with sounds we already know in a familiar word. What English words use “tye” or “nye” in them? I don’t know of any. Since this is an unfamiliar sound in English, this means you need to give these sounds special attention for people to learn them.

What English words have “kt” or “kto” sound in them that is pronounced the same as kto?

The “sht” in shto sounds similar to the “sht” in Pashtun. Is this the correct enunciation?

What English words use “gd” or “gde” in them, similar to the Russian gde?

I think kogda sounds like it looks. The syllable break in between the g and d helps make it similar to the English cog.

What English word is the “chye” in pochyemu similar to?

Can you see a problem with your presentation? A is for apple, Miss Marina. We learn to associate letters with sounds. What sounds does an English speaker associate with “tye”, “nye”, “sht”, “gde”, and “chye”?

Are you familiar with the game of telephone? People sit in a circle, and whisper a message into the ear of the person beside them. The message travels around the circle, with each person repeating what they heard. The message typically ends up nowhere near what the original message started out as.

Garbage in yields garbage out. If you want people to learn how to say the words properly, it is imperative for you to make sure you are not putting garbage in our ears.

Hello, Me Lika Do The Cha Cha.
I guess I don’t consider watching Miss Marina’s bikini top to be a valid reason for watching the Russian language videos. While I think fake breasts can look quite nice, I don’t feel they are enough of a reason to watch a video. There needs to be more to a video than that.

Perhaps I am just biased. I have a dear friend who is built similarly to Miss Marina, and my friend has fake breasts too. Perhaps I have just been around fake breasts enough to know that there is more to a girl than implants or a nice body.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/ohiocountryboy/ Ohio Countryboy

    Hello, Ramsey P.B.
It is my understanding these learning Russian videos are intended to be basic introductory lessons. Being a supplemental aid to other educational sources is a far cry from basic introductory lessons.

Miss Marina may be pronouncing the words perfectly, which is perfectly useless without FIRST learning the proper enunciation.

You do not learn how to pronounce a word by hearing it pronounced properly. You learn how to pronounce a word by hearing it enunciated properly. Once you have learned the proper enunciation, only then can you learn proper pronunciation.

Trying to teach pronunciation before enunciation is like putting the cart before the horse. It simply doesn’t work.

    I’ve been busy practicing the Russian phrase from the new lesson;
Skol’ko syejchas vryemyeni? (What time is it?)

This phrase was a little bit more challenging, but I think I’m seeing a pattern in how you pronounce the word with respect to the Latin text of the phrase. I’m also learning to recognize the Cyrillic, and I can see how easy it is to pronounce the words. But, that doesn’t mean I can pronounce the phrase in one sitting. It takes me many minutes of practice several times a day to get it right. The more I practice the easier it is for me to recognize the phrase in Russian videos.

Here is the lesson. What time is it!?

    Homework:
How many time zones are there in Russia?
Russia used to have 11 time zones and is the country with the largest number of contiguous time zones. France has the largest number of time zones at 12, but those are spread across many islands.

Here is a map of Russia with its original 11 time zones.
Kaliningrad in the far west is 3 hours from UTC time
while Uelen in the far east is 13 hours from UTC.
    http://www.worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/asia/rutimes.htm

Earlier this year in March 2010, Russia eliminated two of its time zones where there are now 9 time zones. Dmitry Medvedev, the third and current President of the Russian Federation and a fan of “Black Sabbath” and “Deep Purple” initiated the change in his state of the nation address last November.

Hi Marina, I am a new viewer and enjoy your words of wisdom!!!!!

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/madmiracle/ Ramsey P. B.

    Hey OhioCountryboy,
OK, I see your point and I think it’s valid. I still believe them to be supplemental educational aides to primary sources simply because any supplemental aid is helpful. I can absolutely see your point with enunciation, but the paradox is this. In my experiences when I teach someone Portuguese words and phrases, that someone pronounces the words beautifully after I speak it at my normal speed. It’s only afterwards when enunciating the same words to the same person that they have a much more difficult time with it.

I believe it’s dependent on the student’s abilities, prior exposure to the language, if any, and the language itself. Portuguese has Chinese and Japanese influence, or vice versa depending on how you look at it. In Portuguese Thank You is Obrigado. In Japanese it’s Oligato. Soap, sabão, and shabon is another example. My point is that those videos are dependent on the student. Personally, I’d probably have a much easier time learning European-Spanish over Japanese, but because I recognize similarities in Japanese I have a little of that prior exposure to that language. I mentioned that, too.

In this post script I need to mention that I’ve never tried to learn a third language. I grew up speaking Portuguese and English in parallel. I learned them at the same time from as soon as I could begin to speak. So, I really don’t know what it’s like to learn another language as an adult.

    Howdy popsgot,

The bank secrecy tradition and the fact that it is based in Switzerland, a tax haven, is what makes a Swiss Bank different. The negative effect of bank secrecy is to facilitate money laundering, tax fraud, terrorist financing and other criminal operations that are illegal in all countries of the European Union (except Switzerland of course, which is not part of the EU by the way) and in most countries of the world. A normal bank may have branches and satellites in Bahamas, Switzerland, Cayman and Cook Islands, etc… but its bread and butter is not the bank secrecy tradition, unlike a Swissbank.

Geez, popsgot. You should work a bit on your English, dude. It is execrable. I wonder how come I can understand your question. “knew” spells “new”, “deference” is “difference”. I suggest you read Shakespeare, man. Without a doubt, his English is of the utmost quality. You definitely won’t read anything like Shakespearean sonnets around here.

Coca Cola is the most popular breakfast drink in the world.
People will take a {swig} while waiting for their morning coffee to brew.

And yet, Coca Cola spends a fortune on advertising!

Marina has been critiqued as being a combination of ‘sizzle and substance’. Her sizzle often overwhelms the substance, but that’s been true since the Fuel TV days.
OCB is still discovering what HFW is about and has developed a few expectations about the substance.

    Hello, VenomRock.
It is not beating a dead horse when new lessons are still plagued with old problems. I also notice that people seem to continue to convince me of how good these lessons are. Perhaps they think that if they repeat it often enough, someone will believe them. (Or perhaps they believe if they repeat it often enough, it will somehow improve the videos.)

It is a defeatist mentality to suggest that Miss Marina can do nothing to change the videos for RT America. I’m sure she could tell RT America not to broadcast any new lessons until she had fixed the problems. Yes, it would be inconvenient, but it could be done. Toyota thought it would be inconvenient to have to fix problems they were aware of, and instead opted to continue selling cars they knew were defective.

It is Miss Marina’s decision if she chooses to address the problems in her lessons. Ultimately, she is the one who receives the consequences or rewards of her decisions.

I don’t have to not watch if I see things I don’t agree with. I also have the option of thumbing down poor videos, and voicing my complaints, whether or not anyone else likes it.

Videos are made for the primary benefit of the viewer. Videos are not made primarily so viewers can benefit the producer. The producer is rewarded only after the viewer gets the benefit. I get the idea people think that we are beholden to Miss Marina for making videos, when in reality, she is beholden to the viewers.

hmmm… fake is the opposite of real or the negative.
And suck-up is fake flattery, also the opposite or negative.

So “fake suck-up” is a double-negative and it actually means “real compliments.”

And since we all knew they were real compliments already… you are just stating the obvious and it means it is also redundant.

    Hello, Ramsey P.B.
There is a big difference between just learning a new word, and learning a new word which contains unfamiliar phonetic sounds. You must first learn the unfamiliar sounds before you can learn the word.

If the new word uses consonant and vowel structures we are familiar with, it is easy to learn a new word. If a word has multiple syllables, it is common to break the word into pieces, and learn how each syllable sounds, and then put the pieces together to get the word.

When we encounter phonetic sounds that are totally unfamiliar to us, and we are unable to relate that sound to any word in our vocabulary, we must first familiarize ourselves with that sound before we can learn to say the word.

Obrigato and oligato both contain consonant and vowel structured sounds that are familiar to the English language. What English word has a “cht” structure and sound like the Russian word chto? The only word I can think of is that has a “cht” spelling is schtick, which is actually Yiddish but has made its way into the English language. The “c” is silent in schtick though, so phonetically it is shtick, so even schtick doesn’t relate to chto.

After spending tons of money, the US Government decided that in its instruction manuals for the military, they should be written at no more than an 8th grade level for people to understand them, no matter the topic being covered. The K.I.S.S. method really does work.

You won’t need any further explanatiion for me, Ohio Countryboy. I get it. I really do.

In Portuguese I can’t find the -ão sound in English. (Adam Sandler’s “Cajun Man” on SNL is dead-on with it though. It’s the very end of the word. Cajun Man.

It’s mostly vowel sounds like -eu, -ão. (The guttaral and rolling R’s are a must  So is that hocking up a loogie sound, too. ;-) )Seu means “his” while céu< means “sky” or “heavens”. There’s a slight tonal inflexional difference. That’s an example where enunciation is needed. I really do get it. But context is important, too. If I were to say Veus o avião no céu? (Do you see the airplane in the sky?), but pronounced céu as seu, no one would care.

English can be funny, too. There was no “W” in Portuguese – that is until the world wide web came along. My father would pronounce sidewalk as sidebok. There’s no “Y” either. Y means “and” in Spanish while E means “and” in Portuguese, but both pronounced the same. In English “vision” spelled phonetically is something like VIH-zhon. Some would consider that odd.

There’s so many variables that I’ll go back to saying it’s dependent on the student, student abilities, prior exposure to language or similar language, so and so forth.

Maybe some time in the winter I’ll create youtube videos with the Portuguese language. I’m still pretty firm with that paradox I mentioned earlier with general language introductories.

Wow, Karl! This thread sure struck some nerves of some people, and chords with others.
When you expressed your observations that there are people who whine, you associated the labels bitter and angry and got some reactions.
I for one, agreed with a lot of what you said, and disagreed with those who want to crown you the Macho King.
I found that the trick sometimes is to just tell people to ‘go to Hell’, but in a way that they can enjoy the trip.
I made a comment about the RT buffoons who decided cancelling their subs was the way to go. Basically, I said YAY! No more stupid noise and crass languages from them! Buh-byee!
I checked out the pages of those making the comments and saw that they weren’t retarded, but just self absorbed children playing in the adult world.
If I were to give advice, it would be simply that you get more flies with honey.
It is frustrating when you can see beyond the horizon and folks get angry with you when you predict an unhappy outcome; as has been demonstrated by political events I had foreseen, for example. Now, some of those same folks are seeing it for themselves and are less angry with me. Instead, they’re mad at the party in power.
There is no joy in saying ‘I told you so’, nor is there a desire to gloat about it because those folks who were angry at me still haven’t figured out that their decision; their choice is what got us all in a place where our leaders act like self absorbed, retarded children!
Did you know that last week the Congress ‘deemed’ to have passed a (non existent) budget and approved another 1.1 trillion dollars to spend over the next fiscal year?
(they can’/won’t tell us where the money is going!).
This has never EVER happened in history. Not a word in the media [crickets chirping].
Now, imagine if Bush had pulled crap like that…
    Anyway….

It is not widely known, but there were many Russian people involved in the early beginnings of Hollywood which is reflected in the Russian community not far from Hollywood and the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) studios.

In fact, MGM’s Samuel Goldwyn was born in Warsaw which was part of the Russian Empire and Louis Mayer was born in Minsk.

In the 1920s, many Russian immigrants in the US were part of the early beginnings of moviemaking in Hollywood. It was at that time that the Russian Empire was replaced by the Soviet state.

    Hello, originalistrick.
I was not aware that I was challenging Miss Marina on anything. My criticism is made in the spirit of cooperation, and not competition. Everyone wins with cooperation.

I am not sure what efforts of Marina’s you are alluding to. Would you please explain?

I help put food on the table for many people. Miss Marina helps to entertain or educate many people. I’m not sure the two can be compared. Perhaps the thing they have in common is that both can consume a person’s life if they are obsessed by it and allow food, entertainment, or some other form of instant gratification to rule their lives.

If we are not careful, we can become enablers to people who want to waste their lives in search of instant gratification, instead of inspiring people to be better.

In regards to our efforts in our private lives, I hope that my alms may be in secret, just as I hope Miss Marina’s are also.

In everything that you learn from me, I sincerely hope that you are able to learn that “have got” is incorrect English, and I hope that you are able to learn better English skills.

It seems that a certain loudmouth troll down below is besmirching Marina’s video under the thinly veiled guise of opinion or boisterous authority. His vacuous arguments might come under the heading of opinion, and at best they are crass, cynical, unethical
and morally reprehensible and lacking any kind of empathy.

In one of his comments he states:

You do not learn how to pronounce a word by hearing it pronounced properly. You learn how to pronounce a word by hearing it enunciated properly. Once you have learned the proper enunciation, only then can you learn proper pronunciation.

Although enunciation or articulating words clearly and distinctly is an important part of learning a language, my dictionary has a pronunciation guide which I use. How would one teach a student to enunciate the word Wednesday or empty without first pronouncing the word correctly? In fact, many language guides tell beginning student not to concentrate on pronunciation, much less enunciation since learning a language is all about communication and the focus should be on putting words in proper context as Marina’s lessons demonstrate.

Marina’s Russian lessons are excellent because she is laying the foundation for learning common Russian phrases whose pronunciation and enunciation can only come with the learner’s diligent practice.

As I have said before, I came to the US having zero knowledge of English. I grew up in NYC and I was placed into a standard classroom with no tutoring. Did anyone slow down and enunciate for me? Never. Did people correct my pronunciation? All of the time.

It’s a shame that some people have to blame the tool instead of blaming their own failure at learning. There are many guides available that summarize the process for learning a language which includes making the learner an active partner in the learning process which includes using supplemental materials.

The opening sentence of this article says:
“Successful language learning entails learner motivation,
    cooperation and empathy
    http://iteslj.org/Lessons/Kavaliauskiene-Autonomy2.html

Notice that one of the key words is empathy. As gravityboy pointed out earlier, that psychopaths are characterized by abnormal lack of empathy combined with strong amoral conduct.

While I was searching for supplemental material to learn Russian on eBay, take a look what I found. Look at the far right who the seller is. It seems that this loudmouth troll has no interest in learning at all and is just spreading lies hate and discontent.

    Hello, Carl.
Your dictionary has a guide which shows the enunciation so that you will be able to properly pronounce the word. It appears that you may be confusing pronunciation and enunciation.

There is a time and a place for everything, empathy included. Empathy can have a place in a subjective review, but empathy has no place in an objective review. Empathy in an objective review just adds emotions that cloud the facts and logic.

There is no such thing as bad students, only bad teachers. It is a teacher’s responsibility to present information in a manner that students are able to learn from.

Some bad teachers are bad teachers simply because they are ineffective educators. You don’t learn anything from them. Either they are not thorough when they teach or they are simply ineffective communicators. The best way to deal with ineffective communication in the classroom? Raise your hand. Ask a lot of questions during class, especially on points that you feel were not discussed well. You may even connive with your fellow classmates to fire as many questions as you can (sensible ones, of course). Getting a lot of questions one classroom session after another will clue your teacher in that something is off with his/her teaching method and he/she may shift these methods accordingly. Or he/she may even ask the class in turn on points how to make his/her teaching method more effective.
Any good teacher’s goal is to make sure that their students learn their subject matter properly
    http://www.howtogetridofstuff.com/people/how-to-get-rid-of-a-bad-teacher/

I find it interesting that this website http://listen2russian.com/ shows the Cyrillic spelling of a sentence over top of the English phonetic spelling, and they also provide audio of normal speed speech, and a much slower speech of the sentence. Now why didn’t I think of suggesting that?

    The effectiveness of ear-training (based on knowledge that hearing and recognition of sounds must precede attempts to make them, see Jones 1948) is supported by Pisoni, et al. 1994, Rvachew & Jamieson 1995, etc.;
Teachers must be well informed about articulatory phonetics and the phonetics of the mother tongue(s) and target language of learners; target languages cannot be addressed in isolation.
    http://www.llas.ac.uk/resources/gpg/408

For listeners, one of the most irritating speech habits is a speaker that doesn’t enunciate clearly. When you don’t bother to pronounce each syllable of each word properly and words get slurred together, you sound uneducated. Worse, your listener has a hard time hearing you
    http://sbinfocanada.about.com/od/speakforsuccesscourse/a/speechlesson1.htm

In The Complete Idiot’s Guide To Learning Russian, on page 9 they say, “Most Russians speak quickly, and the audible differences between letters is slight.”
    http://books.google.com/books?id=w9AVlDZf9j4C&pg=PA3&lpg=PA3&dq=learning+russian+uncommon+phonetics&source=bl&ots=uxyq7muv6p&sig=vFRWepNtIoSsaN6tNXom0XiVNHM&hl=en&ei=AKs7TN_IJ8T7lwfCmNH5BQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=6&ved=0CC8Q6AEwBQ#v=onepage&q&f=false

I have given my criticism of videos, and my points are well supported. Are you going to claim that every site that supports my points are loudmouthed trolls also?

I have also offered suggestions for improving the lessons. It has not been my intention to simply bash Miss Marina’s work. It is easy to be critical. It takes a bigger person to offer constructive criticism on how to improve something.
