I HATE that icon on the YouTube toolbar! It’s annoying and it sounds like a swarm of bees. I’ve also noticed that the people I’m subbed to who are partners don’t have this. However, us “Average Joes & Janes” do.

I kinda manage to tune it out but I can see how others find it irritating. What is curious to me is why people don’t play tunes on them. I had a friend of mine who could play a bugle and to my mind that is just a vuvuzela that has been curled up.

So no, the vuvuzela has not spoilt my enjoyment of the World Cup. The appalling shambles they called the England football team did though. :???:

With those vuvuzelas I feel like I’m in a bee-hive while watching a soccer match.
I actually have a miniature kudu replica – didn’t know about their horns and the vuvuzelas.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/MarcusVermilion marcusvermilion

Under the video screen on the toolbar near the right there is a little soccer ball icon that’s been up for a few weeks. One presses on it and they hear the “bee swarm”. I’m taking this as if one doesn’t like the clip they can have the horn buzzings go on while the clip is played. I haven’t seen this on YouTube parnter videos.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/MarcusVermilion marcusvermilion

Might give it a try. I am hoping that this is taken away when the World Cup is over.

To my most dearest hotforwords Hottie Girl!

Marina! Thank you so much for doing something related to this year’s World Cup. Yes – the Vuvuzela is extremely annoying, but as with any Soccer / Futbol match, there is usually something going on with the crowd. They normally sing songs specifically for the team, or have percussionists that do their thing as well.

Would I want to now see the Vuvuzela appear at other sporting events? Absolutely not. It’s understandable for this World Cup that they show up because of the host country, South Africa, but beyond that, anyone that has one should be booted out of the event.

And that’s just my .02 cents, but it’s worth a million!

Until next time, I remain faithfully yours…

    Dear Marina,
It was nice to see you wearing an Angels baseball cap. Do you watch baseball? Sometimes, the games take a long time to complete. You look good with that cap.
The vuvuzela is a cheap, plastic horn. If they sold the horns in the team colors at any sporting eventr, the vendors will make a profit. So it is a problem and I’m glad TV broadcasters can filter out that noise. If you’re at the stadium, there is no choice but to hear thousands of horns. It must sound better if you team wins.
At the end of your video I enjoyed watching you hold the iPod and laugh. You made me happy.

Hi Marina, love your work, got your book. Just wondering as a Russian-American if you can tell us the origins of the word “espionage” which is similar in Russian, no? Now it is “Back to the USSR!”

    Hello…this is close http://www.hotforwords.com/2009/09/09/agent-provocateur/ :cool: Traditionally, an agent provocateur (plural: agents provocateurs, French for “inciting agent(s)”) is a person employed by the police or other entity to act undercover to entice or provoke another person to commit an illegal act. More generally, the term may refer to a person or group that seeks to discredit or harm another by provoking them to commit a wrong or rash action.///{Espionage} or spying involves an individual obtaining information that is considered secret or confidential without the permission of the holder of the information. {Espionage}

is inherently clandestine, lest the legitimate holder of the information change plans or take other countermeasures once it is known ————–___________”Manuscript: something submitted in haste and returned at leisure.” – Oliver Herford 1863-1that the information is in unauthorized hands.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/doncross2bear/ doncross2bear

    Dear Teacher,

I think I’m glad that I find Soccer about as exciting as sitting back and watching a tree grow, hence I don’t watch it, hence it limits my exposure to the Vuvuzela. This is a good thing, because I’m pretty sure that the Vuvuzela would drive me absolutely atomic bugnuts in really short order. But it’s the South Africans’ party, and they deserve to have fun. It’s been a rough life for them. But I really hope that its popularity doesn’t migrate to other sporting events.

Actually, as an open wheel auto racing fan, there’s really not too many “ball sports” that move fast enough to entertain me. I will admit, however, to a certain fascination with Women’s Beach Volleyball, for some reason. I think I find watching the behind the back hand signals to be…intriguing. Yeah, that’s it.

Speaking of noisy objects and racing, I’ve been to the U.S. Grand Prix a couple of times, and the international crowd in Formula One has their own noisemaker. The notorious hand held gas driven “air horn.” Bazillions of ‘em. About 120 decibels. And when the dude behind you pulls the trigger on one while in the throes of horsepower induced ecstasy, It makes a Ferrari at high cry sound like a contented cat. That’s strictly an F1 thing, thank God.

Very entertaining vid, Teach, and I’m glad you’re enjoying the World Cup. And the Anaheim cap suits your face. Angels. Hmmm.
    Love to Teacher,

I’m surprised you didn’t mention that the vuvuzela is also known as the lepatata. I believe lepatata was the original name.

One has to wonder if the vuvuzela has anything to do with the high crime rate in South Africa.

Hi Marina, The Tour De France started today and there are several terms you hear quite often while watching the race coverage. Can you please explain the meaning and origin of the word {domestique} and how it pertains to cycling. Thank you

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/pedantickarl/ pedanticKarl

Actually, marcusvermilion you worded and punctuated your sentence correctly. I was just having a little fun with words when one reads them differently from the way it is intended. Evan and I are always looking for fun word or sentence ambiguities even when they are correctly written. The other day I created some ambiguities for fun and giggles about Marina being back. I see it happening at work all of the time where people see and hear things differently from what was intended. Your word request will be seen via the use of the braces.

  • kaibanator

A few days ago, I found a sound that is louder and worse than a vuvuzela.

Try being next to a moving heavy duty cement mixer/truck with an exhaust leak. The sound is brutal. I swear its as twice as loud as a vuvuzela

Anyways regarding the world cup, I reckon either Germany or Netherlands to win final assuming they make it. I found it funny though, Germany flogged Australia 4 – 0, Serbia beat Germany 1 – 0, and then Australia beat Serbia 2 – 1

  • kaibanator

I second that request. There’s also another term used in the Tour De France and cycling in general that I would like to request, [Peloton] describing the main big group of cyclists riding together.

Happy inde pendence daze! My money floats and jump-on… Watch a number of actors read the poem “Alphabet of Slavery.” The poem was published in “The Poetry of Slavery, an Anglo-American anthology,” 1764 – 1865. Each letter of the alphabet vividly depicts one aspects of slavery from, “A is an African torn from his home” to “Zealously labour to set the Slaves free”. Poems like this would have been taught to children in religious groups or Sunday Schools as part of the abolitionist campaign to make sure people knew the full horrors of slavery.

    Thank you for the help… :smile: Anna Caterina Antonacci “Habanera” from Carmen …funny my mother did {opera}

…sourced/wiki——–The factory bell rings and the cigarette girls emerge from the factory, greeted by young men who have gathered to flirt with them (“La cloche a sonné”). The girls enter smoking cigarettes, and finally Carmen appears, and all the men ask her when she will love them (“Quand je vous aimerai?”). She replies in the famous Habanera (“L’amour est un oiseau rebelle”): “Love is a rebellious bird that no one can tame … He has never known law. If you don’t love me I love you, if I love you watch yourself!”. When they plead for her to choose a lover from among them, (“Carmen! sur tes pas, nous nous pressons tous!”) she tears a bunch of cassia from her bodice and throws it at Don José, who has been ignoring her, before going back into the factory with the others. José is annoyed by her insolence.

Micaëla returns and gives him a letter —and a kiss— from his mother (“Parle-moi de ma mère!”). José longingly thinks of his home, and reading the letter sees that his mother wants him to return and get married. Micaëla is embarrassed and leaves, but Don José declares that he will marry her.

…thanks again for the log-in-the/nogin

Uwe Seeler was a popular German soccer player from back in the 50′s through 70′s and played in the same World Cup as Pelé. Although Seeler never won a World Cup, he was a tremendously popular player due to his fairness, modesty, and kindness.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uwe_Seeler

The puny part about Uwe Seeler and Vuvuzela is in the pronunciation. They sound similar.
Vuvuzela sounds like Uwe Seeler (uvuzela)

Seeler is pronounced similar to “zela”
Uwe, taking some liberties in pronunciation is similar to uvu. Some people pronounce it oo-vuh, where I pronounce it more like oo-veh.

    Dear Teacher,

Thanks for finallydoing a World-Cup-themed lesson. And that was a great word to explore too.

I’m quite an avid World Cup fan and, while the vuvuzelas were kind of obnoxious at first, I have become used to it and kind of enjoy it now. Every time I hear them I know there is a great match on and I instictively go towards the sound. I’m actually going to miss the vuvuzela once the Cup is over.

That being said, definitely should not transfer them to other sports. Its distinct to South African football and will be a nice distinction for this particular Cup, but maybe it should stay that way.

I saw some street musician in Europe playing the bagpipes. He was dressed in the full uniform with hat and kilt and he was cleaning up… there had to be at least 6 or 7 hundred Euros in the case.

The only guy that beat that is the guy that plays guitar in central park near strawberry fields on the hill. He had a guitar case on each side of him and there had to 2 or 3 thousand buck in them, they were completely overloaded with 5′s, 10′s and 20′s.

Hi Marina! An interesting quandary has befallen me from my chess studies. I’m studying the positional chess classic “My System” (1930) by Aron Nimzowitsch (or commonly today, Nimzovich). In the chapter on “The Isolated d-pawn…” (i.e., queen-pawn), he frequently refers to that isolated pawn as ‘the isolani’; SO, Marina, [isolani] is my word request. I’ve known that word from this subject for more than the past 10 years. Only lately have I dared to question its practicality among non-chess situations. I haven’t been able to find the word, isolani, in a dictionary (book or online), nor even a practical use from a Google search. Did our hero, Nimzowitsch, concoct a neologism? Only YOU can solve this etymological conundrum, Marina! If you don’t do a vid, can you please answer me in an email, please. This is a gigantic quandary for me now :?: …

    Hi dellforce,
Many of the chess terms come from French, Italian and Spanish and maybe a few other languages. isolani is Italian meaning Islanders.
Maybe Marina can offer a nice background story to go with that.

Thank you much for the input, Marina (and staff) ! Isolani must be the neutral form (since “Nimzo” attributed it to a pawn [the inanimate object; in chess, it's not even referred to as a piece]) of the Italian word for islander, isolano or isolana [feminine]). My Italian dictionary gives, the word, isola, for ‘island’. Now I have no more quandaries  By the way (btw), your website has A LOT going on… It’s the only site that has slowed down my typing on my NEW iPhone4! Peace, y’all!

Thank you for your great feedback dellforce.

Regarding the slowing down of the entering of text on the iPhone (either 3 or 4), it has been looked at by Lennie, me, and Marina. The slowness has to do with the site’s update back in April which includes a lot more technology.

Essentially, here is the current status.
The slowness only occurs if you Reply to someone and the rate of slowness depends on the number of comments on that page. Replying to someone is much faster if there are only 25 or so comments as opposed to 200 comments. If you are creating a brand new comment, then, there is no slowness and therefore it doesn’t matter the number of comments per page.

What I have been doing on my iPhone3 which works very well, is to disable my JavaScript in my Safari Settings. When I do that, I am able to reply to any comment no matter how many comments there are on a page.

Hi again, later in the day… Here is an email I sent about a month ago… I can see you gettin’ FUNKY WITH IT, Professor Orlova!!

Hello, Marina! It’s been a long while since I’ve contacted you over here. What happened to the word request link¿ I can’t check that long list of words 1st anymore. I want to request the word {Funk / Funky  }. I can see you having a lot of fun with that one; funky odor being associated with the groovy Funk Music; you could even get into some of the pioneers of funk music, like Sly And The Family Stone, George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, Bootsy Collins (I love “Munchies For Your Love”), Cameo and Earth, Wind And Fire (despite that by their own admission that they’re not a funk band when compared to the previous artists). And, Marina, for the longest time, your intro music has been very funky, not referring to the cartoon intro part. Of course, this could open the door to you doing vids on the word origins of other musical genres: jazz, rock ‘n roll, reggae, ska, and what’s the genre called “alternative” an alternative to? Well, primarily I’m concerned about {the funk}. Get funky with me, Marina  ! Peace

    At the top of that page is a link that says;
“For a chronological list, click here.”
which is a good way to scroll through the list of words.
You can also use CTRL-F to do a page find of a desired word.
Funk has not been done so that is a good request.

I would like to request two words that are related and in the news. They are {espionage} and {spy}. With your humorous and goofy style it would be nice to see what you’re able to come up with on those. Thanks for all you do, I’m a huge fan!

Thanks for the influx of FUNK! The Earth, Wind and Fire clip is Amazing! One of my Favorites from them. Come to the Big Funk Concert in St. Louis, MO. August 28th, at 8 pm at Arena! The performers will be George Clinton and Parliament, Zapp, Teena Marie, and Cameo. It’ll be a Funk Extravaganza!

    Marina, regarding today’s Russian lesson
    I appreciate you using the
6 W’s, Who, What, Where, When,
Why and How instead of the typical
    5 W’s used in reporting.

    I have added a 7th W that I use in
    technical interrogation; Which.
    Asking questions using “which”
has helped me solve many more problems.

How did the word vodka come about? I think it has something to do with the similarity between “вода” (voda-Russian word for water) and “водка” (vodka) in Russian. Seems vodka may be just as vital as water is to the Russians! =D

{Satyriasis} and {Nymphomaniac}. I know they are the male and female forms of being addicted to sex, sort of, but do they have anything to do with satyrs and nymphs at all?? Where did the words originate? Please investigate!!

    Dear Teacher:

If being “disenchanted” means to be no longer “enchanted,” what is someone before becoming “disgruntled”?

And, if someone behaving casually is “nonchalant” and someone who is upset is “nonplussed,” is someone irate then “chalant” and someone gratified “plussed”?

And, finally, where did these words come from?

    Your obedient student,

think, if i remember correctly, they were making fireworks in one bunker and that went wrong. the doors were open and some sparks / fire went into a couple of storage-bunkers.
