    Hi!!

Sweetheart, it is always a bargain to learn from you.
Hey, sweetheart, that’s a word to investigate!

I would love to dog fight you! Skip will tear you up! Oh wait, wrong kind of fight. ;-) I would normally be begging you to give me something, but not this time. I get motion sickness real easy and that wouldn’t be good for anybody. I could take Dramamine but that probably wouldn’t fight off the movement of a F-16.
I love this video! I was just saying to myself while watching the Poindexter vid, “I sure do like it when Marina does characters in her lessons.”
BOOM!, here it is! Thank you.
I dig it when you let yourself go with a character. Very cool

Damn!! I’m just about as far as you can get from L.A. and still be in the States – Cape Cod, Massachusetts. I would’ve LOVED to get in an F-16 Falcon simulator. Since I was a teen I’ve flown Microsoft’s Flight Simulator complete with yoke and rudder pedals. I’ve seen these Falcons roar at the speed of sound at air shows. An actual F-16 sim would’ve been wicked awesome! Damn! Damn! Damn! Damn! Damn!

My bargaining skills aren’t that great; it’s too hard for me to {feign} disinterest.

Ever hear this joke? He: “Would you sleep with me for a million dollars?”
    She: “Of course.”
He: “You would? Great! Now that we’ve established what you are,
    we can haggle about price.”

I’m afraid I won’t be in the running for the dogfight, Marina. L.A. is too far to go for that. I’ll just keep enjoying watching the F-16′s (?) scream across the skies from Beale AFB.

Forget William Shatner & Priceline! You’re a better bargain negotiator!

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/justinparadise/ jp

personally, i have absolutely no tolerance for dog fighting like the kind that stupid sports star was caught up in. it is one of the most horrible of all acts.

but this of course is different and i’m sure you and four lucky peeps will have a blast.

here’s to the return of the your other video character, i love the characters so much, you are hilarious when you play different people.

that also looks like a great shopping site, will definitely check it out, it is amazing what the power of the Internet allows people to do. i read about some people who are able to sell the entire stock of almost anything it seems simply by using Twitter. they negotiate for good prices with the vendor, send notice out to Twitter and in hours everything is sold and shipped, everybody wins. i forget the name, but it just goes to show, all anybody ever needs is the information connections and amazing things can happen. here’s to the Internet which is still in its infancy!!!

Also, GREAT WORK internationally Marina. it sounds like you are right at home in London. Perhaps it suits you better than LA? Bouncing back and forth between two places is a great way to go however, I bet you’d be quite good at it, the international diplomat that you already are.

And thanks again for all of your excellent lessons and inspiration. Your teachings, this site and my experience here has most certainly changed both my life and business direction immensely! I have learned so much from you on a variety of levels these past months. I almost can’t believe how much honestly. You opened the tiniest door for me in terms of language learning and it has become so huge for me. SO THANK YOU.

BEST REGARDS TO YOU AND EVERYONE AT HFWs!!!!!

I’m in the LA area. Dog fighting in a sim F-16 sounds like an awesome fun thing to do. Don’t let the side pressure stick throw you off. I hope they have you recorded so we can see/hear your reactions.
I would also like to know, is it rabbit season or duck season???

I love your video on bargain!Your bugs bunny bargaining was funny lol!I loved your role playing as well!A F-16 Falcon simulator sounds awesome, but I live to far away from L.A.Thank you for asking anyway! My bargaining skills are no good at all.Thank you for all that you do for us Marina!Peace everyone :!:   P.S. :!: :!: Wow :!: :!: Yours truly had just been selected to participate in a online gaming study that is a Federally funded research project being conducted by Colorado State University, University at Albany, and Ohio University. For this research, they need to observe and record real people doing different things in spaces like Second Life, World of Warcraft, and Final Fantasy so that we can better understand what people do during their game play.
    http://scribes.colostate.edu/aboutStudy.html

The applications are now closed but you can see a video of what this research study is about. http://scribes.colostate.edu/ Speaking of applications, my browser messed up and I and to do the app twice. Grrrr! But it must have answered the questions correctly.

What is Second Life? It’s an online virtual world simulator. It’s not a game per say (did I use the right words?), but you can do many things with it. Even make millions of real dollars. Someday I plan to teach classes in the simulator. It will revolutionize online education the likes that have never been seen before in my industry. Go check it out. http://www.secondlife.com/

I’ll see about taking some photos of my progress in the study for you all to see. Oh and my avatar looks just like me in Real life. I wear an all white captains outfit!

My bargaining skills freeking ROCK!! But you’ll never find out how great, i’m very expensive! I have always acted for my clients in the past, do them proud, hated by the buyers! Now, I’m selling for my self, and loving it making buyers happy too, which is even better than before. Love to haggle, hustle and dance for the win of a deal, at a very reasonable price! Shallow as hell is some areas, but so rewarding doing for myself now :) Love to purchase, always ask for a discount and play aloof. Depends on who needs or wants it the most, desire out weighing the cost. Sold. Can’t flog a dead horse and why would you be interested in buying one? (…or being with one for that matter!!) (well, no, thinking about that, I know some burger joints who might pay a good price for a dead horse or two…ever notice how cats and dogs go missing in your area when a new take away opens?…all those lost posters springing up with Tibbles picture on them! Wan wice wiv daat? Some can sell or haggle some don’t as its not for them, they are better at doing other things, I guess. Certainly is a skill negotiating, can be learned however, it really comes down to you. Have also noticed how the best sales men/ women are of Gemini Zodiac origin too!! Went out on a reunion with some jingle jangles of past, 80% of us were under the twins sign….deffo something in that. Geminis get really depressed too but always land back on their feet :)…always!!!!! Also, dealing with many cultures is fascinating, but thats another story :)

If this re-opens, let me know please s have a friend who is an all day gamer and really needs to be paid for what he does. Bores the crap out of me but he loves it so worth a mention if you could be mindful. A game company would do very well with his skills as hes my age and played since he was a weener, so years of experience. He gets through games real quick too. I would go as far as saying he has a talent for it.

That Bugs Bunny bargaining was funny.
Bargaining, or haggling or dicker skills
    are interesting and have changed
over the years as the world has become
smaller. It’s not what it used to be.
Street merchants still expect one to
haggle over the price for a win win
result, but in the end the merchant wins.
I think in the end it comes down to
    value versus price.

I’m only getting $5,000 Linden for it. Which works out to be like $20 bucks US. Though it’s better than paying $20 bucks LOL!! One reason I like SL is that you can play for free or you can put in a few bucks and get a few things.

I agree with you about how gaming is so freaking boring. But that’s where SL is sooo much different. It’s like 100 games all rolled up into one simulator. One way to look at the simulator is think of it as a Holodeck in Star Trek. That’s what SL is all about.

I think they might have some openings next month according to the site. They emailed me some stuff that I have to read up on. This is one lab rat that plans on kicking some ass. Oh wait.. Its a thinking game. hummm Ok Im still going to kick some ass. hahah.

Do note that they were looking for a select few groups of people. This is a study on how people play online games. They are going to be connecting monitoring equipment to my avatar and track all it says and does. Mostly how I interact with other players. It just as well be a game of tic tac toe. Solving the puzzle quickly is not the goal here. From the questions they asked me was about team work. That said the questions changed depending how you answered the last ones.

The best thing for him to do is play SL and get familar with it. I’ve been playing for 3+ years now. I’ve even helped debug and trouble shoot problems. They can see that Im heavily involved with the simulators success.

    Hope that helps :)

    Dear Marina,
My goodness, do you look good wearing flight goggles and imitating Snoopy in his Sopwith Camel fighting against the Red Baron! It would be great fun to play with you, but it takes me eight hours to drive to LA. (I really would enjoy playing with you, too! See, when you fly in the F-16 simulator, I’d like to be your seat cushion! Just sit in my lap and enjoy the thrill of flying the simulator, firing missiles, shooting the cannon and manuevering. I’d help you!)
Am I a good bargainer? I have a C.P.M. designation. That’s Certified Purchasing Manager. Industry and government uses a formalized system of bargaining which can achieve great savings if it’s done properly. On the other hand, there are famous instances of paying $600 for an ordinary hammer! I think your Bugs Bunny system of bargaining would work better, sometimes!
Thank you for posting this video while you were away in London. I wish you a safe trip home to us in California!

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/pagedoll/ PageDoll

My bargaining skills are simple, research what you what buy, find the closest store thats selling what you what, ask the person behind the counter what their asking for the thing you want and at the same time they’re answering you pull out a big wad of cash in the exact amount you want to pay. Then ask them if they’ll take this much, however that much is. It works more than it doesn’t… funny how a stack of 100 dollar bills will change the game in an instant. :o

    Marina,
I have been enjoying the World Cup these past couple weeks, but I have been plagued with a nagging question that I hope you can answer. You may have done this in a previous lesson, but it not, I would like to know why people in the USA call football “soccer”. How did football come to refer to the sport in the NFL and soccer come to mean the sport found in the US Soccer Federation?

I was never good at bargaining. I foolishly trust people and believe that the price is the price. I do obsess and seek revenge if I find out I did get ripped off. If a price seems to good to be true it probably is not a good price or there are hidden costs. Desensitizing war games should probably be in the bargain basement.

    http://www.incredible-adventures.com/migs/

There is a much simpler solution to “bargain”.
Break the word down into its components “bar” and “gain”. Since “bar” has several meanings we can easily eliminate a place to drink Vodka and a steel or iron rod. That leaves “prevent” or “prohibit” as the meaning for “bar”. “Gain” means to profit. So “bar-gain” means to prohibit someone else from making a profit off of you. Simple, Het?

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/vitya/ Vitya

You drive a hard bargan, Marina.

We learned this in school, for your Russian lessons:

    {точка, точка, запятая,
    минус, рожица кривая,
    ухо, ухо, колпачок,
    вышел ванья дурак}

    Point, point, comma,
    Minus, crooked curve,
    Ear, ear, cap,
    The fool has appeared Vanya

    {Точка, точка, запятая,
    вот и рожица кривая,
    ручки, ножки, огуречек,
    вот и вышел человечек}

And you draw a picture with each.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/fglrx/ fglrx

A less interesting, but more important difference – every misunderstanding in this case in the different country (“Sorry, but what do you mean by restroom?”) may be dangerous for our pants:

    http://separatedbyacommonlanguage.blogspot.com/2007/03/toilet.html
In AmE, toilet is used to refer to the porcelain receptacle for human waste, but not usually to the room in which it’s situated. It can refer to either in BrE. So, toilet is a perfectly usable word in AmE when one wants to refer to the fixture, as in I stood on the toilet in order to change the lightbulb. But one wouldn’t usually hear it in AmE in contexts in which is refers to the room, as in They were smoking in the girls’ toilet(s). For someone who associates that word only with the porcelain object, it seems a bit too personal to say Where’s the toilet?, since there’s no doubt that bodily functions will be involved if you’re asking for that porcelain object. On the other hand, asking for the room in which the toilet sits seems less personal, since there are lots of reasons to go to that room (e.g. to brush your teeth, get some toilet paper for blowing your nose, adjust your toupee…). So, one asks for the room, and no one is forced to contemplate bodily functions.

In AmE, bathroom has been used to euphemi{s/z}e ‘toilet’ for so long that go to the bathroom means ‘evacuate one’s bladder/bowels’. So, an unfortunate person might say to the doctor I have pain when I go to the bathroom. They don’t mean that they knock their head on the door frame. Because bathroom = bodily functions, that word has become tainted as taboo, and thus other euphemisms like restroom and powder room have been invented for the room.

While/Whilst toilet is less taboo in BrE than in AmE, some people avoid it because it is déclassé* (or non-U, in BrE terms). The U (i.e. upper class) terms are lavatory (or lav for short) or loo. At school in the US, I was taught to ask to visit the lavatory. I can still recall my classmates’ and my confusion as to why the bathroom was called the laboratory. I can also recall Sister Helen’s exasperation with our insistence on saying labatory or labratory (the usual AmE pronunciation of laboratory).

  • neuroway

Gee, what could just be the country we’re talking in this video, about, and, more important, who’s the despicable weakling who would accept to dogfight any woman?

Women are made to make you fly high. And not to make you dogfight low.

Anyways. Sometimes, Unicorns can kill dragons. And oh yes they can, and quite fiercely and efficiently. As true as I am here and I can type these words tonite. And here’s the Colbert’s, Louis XIV’s ageless proof of it.

A dog-fight is air-to-air combat with two or more aircraft. I’d imagine it’s a more common term for piston-driven engine airplanes, but definitely applicable to planes with jet engines.

    Yes… this really bothers me.

And most of the damage you see now was actually started more than 2 months ago.
It’s like a slow acting poison with a lot more to come.

Anytime something gets huge and everyone uses it, like cars, oil, other major businesses and certain websites… it is ridiculous having idiots in control of them. They are not thinking of the people, they are only thinking of themselves.

    Dear Teacher,

I really got a kick out of your Bugs Bunny “duck season” bargaining skills. Also you still look great in a flight helmet and goggles. And a porkpie hat. And anything else I’ve seen you wear on your brainy (and pretty) little head.

I don’t like to spend a long time haggling. I start with my first price, negotiate one time to the price that I would pay, then walk away. Works often. If not, then I didn’t want it badly enough, or the seller didn’t want to sell it badly enough.

FHM, huh? oh my… Brit edition or USA edition? Wasn’t sure where you were when I read your Tweet. Congrats on the exposure, if you’ll pardon the pun. Seriously, it oughta bring in more viewers. Good for you, dear. Cya.

I haveto admit that a picture would be nice, but if you use your head… it’s even better.

I don’t know if there’s an english expression, in germany we call it “Kopf-Kino”. It would roughly translate to head-cinema. Just close your eyes and see the image in your head. It’s not so good if someone says something you really don’t want to see (let’s say George W. naked. Or even better: George W. as president of the US of A), but with Marina… it could only be an scar Classic.

    The Texas Wedding Test
    @originalistrick ;-)

“I was a very happy man. My wonderful girlfriend and I had been dating for over a year, and so we decided to get married. There was only one little thing bothering me…It was her beautiful younger sister.

“My prospective sister-in-law was twenty-two, wore very tight mini-skirts, and generally was bra-less. She would regularly bend down when she was near me, and I always got more than a nice view. It had to be deliberate. Because she never did it when she was near anyone else.

“One day her ‘little’ sister called and asked me to come over to check the wedding invitations. She was alone when I arrived, and she whispered to me that she had feelings and desires for me that she couldn’t overcome. She told me that she wanted me just once before I got married and committed my life to her sister.

“Well, I was in total shock, and couldn’t say a word.

“She said, ‘I’m going upstairs to my bedroom, and if you want one last wild fling, just come up and get me.’

I was stunned and frozen in shock as I watched her go up the stairs. I stood there for a moment, then turned and made a beeline straight to the front door. I opened the door, and headed straight towards my car.

“Lord… And behold, my entire future family was standing outside, all clapping!

“With tears in his eyes, my father-in-law hugged me and said, ‘We are very happy that you have passed our little test. We couldn’t ask for a better man for our daughter. Welcome to the family.’

“And the moral of this story is:

Always keep your condoms in your car.”

Could someone whos a TA do me a massive massive favour and unsubscribe my account? I have tried to delete it but just keep getting an error message, 1053, and wont let me go!

Marina, what is there to say sweetness? The three year journey seeing you go from nothing to the top has been amazing, so many congratulations to you again. Remembering when I joined looking at your web site with no one there commenting, with typing comments like ‘Come on, some one talk!’ and with only a hand full of subscribers, to where you are now, is fantastic. You have changed so much since then. The HFWs community are wonderful, lovely people, who have given you so much help to get you to where you are today. I hope you respect them and never forget that, as they surly love you. Remember who your true friends are and not the new money orientated community as they will abuse you.

I hope you also learn, soon, the Western ways of how to respect people as well as you have learn’t how to speak English too! If you treat and mislead people, messing with hearts and minds, saying you are sincere with their words of admiration, saying that you love them, don’t lead them up the garden path and take advantage of them. Tricking people, abusing their trust is very low and wins you no stars! I have never been to Russia, but Russian girlfriends here say it’s a lot different to how guys treat you girls out there. You may want to let that go!

It is so wrong to play peoples hearts as the way you have with mine, knowing, having told you so honestly how my feelings were for you over the years! Never said I was perfect and made a few, silly mistakes, joys of being human! Have fun by all means but please, don’t tell anyone you love them with sincerity, encouraging them with subliminal messages, giving hope that you actually care for them! I understand you are still a young girl with much to learn, so a good time now for you to grow up and become a woman. You are nearly thirty after all.

So many here are feeling very let down by you Marina, as they too watched with earnest seeing the dance we had. We all thought you were bigger than this, playing these games but believed in you, as you said to do. I’m not going to repeat some of the things being said, as they are just reacting protecting me. I have already forgiven you. You still are, to me, an amazing person and I thank you for showing me a little bit of magic and giving me hope. All be it a lie! You’re a good actress!! Shame you have to walk all over people in order to gain money and fame, but I guess that’s just good old show business for you!! Shall visit LA to see it for my self one day and no need to worry, I won’t be stalking, that is for certain! Not sorry for my tone here as obviously feeling very let down by you, so have every right in being so.

God bless you and all who sail in you. Be well, be good or what ever it is you want to be in your play for today. And good bye to all in HFWs, keep up the inspirations and dedication for Marina. Nice knowing you.

    Love you all, Mat.

But love, first learnèd in a lady’s eyes,
Lives not alone immurèd in the brain,
But, with the motion of all elements,
Courses as swift as thought in every power,
And gives to every power a double power,
Above their functions and their offices.
    It adds a precious seeing to the eye;
    A lover’s eyes will gaze an eagle blind;
A lover’s ears will hear the lowest sound,
When the suspicious head of theft is stopped:
Love’s feeling is more soft and sensible
Than are the tender horns of cockled snails:
Love’s tongue proves dainty Baccus gross in taste.
For valour, is not love a Hercules,
Still climbing trees in the Hesperides?
Subtle as Sphinx; as sweet and musical
    As bright Apollo’s lute, strung with his hair;
And when Love speaks, the voice of all the gods
Makes heaven drowsy with the harmony.
Never durst poet touch a pen to write
Until his ink were tempered with Love’s sighs

    Nevermind.

This is a fantasy website where we share fantasy relationships and feelings with HotForWords, a screen character who may or may not bear any genuine relationship with the flesh-and-blood Marina Orlova. (And we get some real word lessons as part of the package.) Part of the fantasy is letting HotForWords play with our feelings. We grant permission for that as part of signing up and participating, and take responsibility for managing our fantasy feelings. This means not confusing them with real feelings for real people who are part of our real lives; nor thinking we have real feelings for the real Marina Orlova, whom we don’t really know, and who, despite being a very public person, deserves her privacy and our respect for her personal and emotional space. :|

Just start living on London time a week before you go to London while stile in LA.

As long as you don’t have anything scheduled for the evening in LA… you can go to sleep at 3:00 pm in the afternoon and set your alarm for midnight.

Then when you are in London you will already be on schedule with everyone there and you will be fresh as a daisy for a photo shoot.

Moscow is almost 12 hours difference (or the half way point) so any place east of there shrink down and go to sleep early. Anywhere west of Moscow stretch it out and stay up later before your trip, like Japan stay up till 5:00 am and wake up at 2:00 pm in the afternoon. :?:

I know what you mean. I can understand a Spaniard speaking Spanish much more clearly than Mexican or Hispanic Spanish. I dig that Spanish saying. It’s thoughful.

Evan, that’s funny with what your ex said. Even I have a hard time understanding Brazilian-Portuguese. I have to pay special attention and am constantly asking Brazilians to repeat themselves or to slow down. Like the word “lie” is “mentira”. (phonetically – “mane-TEE-ruh”) Brazilians say “mane-CHEE-ruh” and it’s spelled the same. (I think it’s like that in Spanish, too.) What’s worse is that I have to be especially careful with certain words. In the Azores, the word “rapariga” means “teen-age girl” and nothing more. In Brazil “rapariga” is slang for “prostitute”.
Continental-Portuguese can be a little tricky for me, but speaking with an Azorean is as easy for me as speaking English.

It is the QUEEN’s English you dork and who says we are all non-hostile ;)

It may seem contrived all this glitz and glamour etc.. but not to put too fine a point on it that is Hollywood for you. Sure it is the Hollywood for the 21st century but still just as cosmetic as any other.

Does fame change people? I think that is a question that is highly dependant on who it is who is famous. People are people. But as far as I am aware we all remain human no matter how ‘popular’ we get.

I freely admit though I am not like your average groupie and the clue to that lies in my name. That added to the fact I have been ‘online’ for a very very long time means I have a different perspective of fame through infamy.

That being said I always will remain loyal to Marina because she has always been loyal to me. It is no secret but you really should not ask for more than someone is willing (or able) to give.

Ok sermon over.. just felt like passing comment but have been distracted 20 times so far so it obviously is not meant to be longer.

Dude, seems you have been cast into the deep, dark, subliminally deceitful, effeminate and devilish bottomless pit of love.

COME BACK TO YOUR SENSES, DAMNIT!!! ‘Cuz, quite fortunately so, there’s a remedy for this disease. YES THERE IS!!! And it is: Bimbos, sportbikes and guns.. It will blow the pressure out of your soul, your body and your brains, as true as I tell ya. Erm… What do I type… Just forget the guns for now okay? You are not in a state to handle guns or any federally controlled weaponry. Try bimbos, wheelies at 100+MPH on motorcycles and strong drinks mixed with a touch of rock’n roll. Just contact your nearest State Advisory Authority Department to know if all this is legal in your area before you bring this stuff into your life.

And if, by the strangest clin d’oeil of life, you don’t like that, well, my friend, there is still a cure. It is even cheaper than what’s above.

Kant’s Critique Of Pure Reason.. Yessir. Not as good looking as a platinum blondie botoxed and siliconed Hollywoodian bimbo, but much more intelligent and profound, so profound it may look like a deep, dark bottomless pit of endless brainy stuff.

Ugh. I have spoken and have no remaining intelligent advice to type out for the moment.

Marina, maybe you could make a video about Southern English. It would be fun to see how it sounds with your Russian accent. Examples:

    {defnutly
to be sure, without question. (definitely)
    “Thets defnutly thuh smartest dawg in town.”}

    {eevnun
the latter part of the day. (evening)
    “The moon thuther eevnun wuz gist butiful.”}

  • neuroway

Yessss, hahaha. I would actually be quite absolutely interesting to hear how “howdy cow-boy”, “this fuckin’ ain’t my first corrida” and “happy trails buckaroo” sounds when pronounced with a russian accent!

Marina, I got this as an email today. Are these correct?
    Thanks, Mike

There is an old Hotel / Pub in Marble Arch, London which used to have gallows adjacent. Prisoners were taken to the gallows (after a fair trial of course) to be hung. The horse drawn dray, carting the prisoner was accompanied by an armed guard who would stop the dray outside the pub and ask the prisoner if he would like ”ONE LAST DRINK”.

If he said YES it was referred to as ONE FOR THE ROAD
If he declined, that prisoner was ON THE WAGON

    So there you go…!!!

    More bleeding history…

They used to use urine to tan animal skins, so families used to all pee in a pot & then once a day it was taken & sold to the tannery. If you had to do this to survive you were “Piss Poor”.

But worse than that were the really poor folk who couldn’t even afford to buy a pot they
“Didn’t have a pot to Piss in” and were the lowest of the low.

Solar, wind, tides, waves and other movements are completely free and have no detrimental side {effects, affects?}.

I think a lot of these alternative energy ideas have already come along but people in control of money and power can just buy the patent and crunch the idea out of existence… they think of themselves and keep the oil flowing.

    Hi leoNard,
    Was your FB account hacked?
If so, have you changed your password?
FB issues have been in the news recently where a huge number of accounts were hacked. If you’ve changed your password, have you contacted FB? Let me know what you’ve done so far and let me know if I can help you in any way.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/pedantickarl/ pedanticKarl

Yes, leoNard, go ahead and change your password to at least 8 or 9 characters. It’s best if you include numbers in the password.

I don’t blame you for your anger leoNard and I think I can agree with your statements. I think the dilemma or conflicted thought is that you have geeks with noble intentions who presume that everyone can be trusted and then there are geeks with evil intentions who trust no one. Why are we talking about it here? Непонятно

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/veritanuda/ veritanuda

Actually the best way to construct a secure password is to not only use numbers but a mixture of Upper and lower case letters and punctuation. As a sys admin I am rather draconian with my password policy and insist that people generate one that is so good I can’t crack it ;)

Ideal password lengths are between 10 and 16 characters, though I do know that some website FORCE you to have shorter ones, which quite frankly I think is nuts. Still, even with shorter passwords you can improved you resistance to brute force guessing by rotating passwords on an frequent but random basis.

Yes it is a hassled but as I am forever telling people security is all about a balance between safety and convenience. You can put 50 locks on you front door to make yourself more secure but then it will take you 10 mins to get out of your house in the morning.

To my mind security it more about a mindset than it is about any particular practice. After all paranoia doesn’t mean they are after you , but it does mean they MIGHT be ;)

You’re right veritanuda. Many people use short and easy to guess passwords. It’s been six or more year since I read an article on creating the ideal password. The minimum elements of a secure password then was to use a non-dictionary word mixed with numbers using a minimum length of 8 characters. If I remember the article correctly, I think it said that it would take 300 years to brute force crack the password using a Cray. The recommended ideal length at that time was 10-12 characters. Now, with much faster computers and parallel processing available the is a greater need for more secure passwords.

Now, having said that, even though it is valid, and even though brute force is still being used, the easy pickings is social engineering. Those fifty locks on the house or those 16 character passwords are all meaningless when you are up against social engineering. How many people might give duplicate keys to a so called trusting friend and how many people have entered the most secure password into a web page that is believed to be friendly but is actually a phishing website? I see it every day where people get ripped off due to phishing emails, getting infected with trojans and where they enter their credentials into a phishing website. The other issue I also hear about often is unsecured wireless routers.

    …Newman!

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/gootar/ grаvìtуbâ—‹y

    Exactly!

Don’t believe anything you hear, and only about half of what you actually see. There might be a completely different reason for anything you saw for yourself.

    My favorite example…

    http://www.gootar.com/gravityboy/beams.jpg

It’s easy to see from this picture the sun is only about 10 or 20 miles away and right behind the trees (A lot of todays modern physics is just as wrong.)

Stuff on the internet… that doesn’t even come into consideration for reality.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/veritanuda/ veritanuda

Well that is true also… about social engineering. It is sometimes overlooked but the supposed uber hacker Kevin Mitnick freely admits he used social engineering to ‘hack’ his way around. Personally I know it is very easy with a pleasant telephone manner to get people to give away details they would not consciously think of doing.

I also agree that malware and trojans and spam emails are easy ways to get users to give up there personal information but like I said it is more about attitude than it is about actual practice. Granted I am not your average windoze user, in fact I am not a windoze user at all, but even if I were I would still be dutifully mindful about what I am doing and having less faith in programs to do all the work for me.

Part of my job is to work in the security sector and just as in physical security you can never secure a building 100% so you want to secure it enough that it becomes impractical to breech over that of your neighbours. In a town were everyone leaves their door open just one lock will suffice to get someone to move on.

As for wireless.. well.. there is no such thing as secure wifi, but there are ways of communicating over wifi that are secure.

I guess it is a mentality I have that even though I trust people I don’t trust anyone enough to represent me in that trust. I never give away passwords and I never give access to other peoples passwords. I think that is the responsible thing to do when people put their trust in you.

Now, I think this thread has become somewhat wayward so I won’t post again on this topic. But I am glad for the opportunity to express my views. I sometimes feel I am waging an impossible war against complacency of the not quite techie internet generation. ;)

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/pedantickarl/ pedanticKarl

The first sentence is for me and the rest of the sermon probably for matalexwolf, but I will answer to prove my innocence.

I haven’t used the Internet as long as you’ve done, only since 1997, but that was probably enough to see the changes that happened through the last decade in it, so I also have a lot of reserve about such new phenomena as HFW site and videos.

In fact, this is the only site in the Internet when I’m really protecting my privacy by using a completely different nick than everywhere else and not making any references to HFW on other forums or social networking websites, just to avoid the possibility of being mocked by friends of mine or other people who can google my activity; in fact many people think that HFW is something close to porn or other bad things when it isn’t).

I must admit that I created my account here as a fake one for posting very negative comments so I took a random nick… but I’ve stayed here for a year. I saw that the discussion of the hardcore users here were completely different than on other forums I knew. It reminds me of some Usenet off-topics which were the quintessence of the Usenet (before it completely went too the dogs).

I don’t judge current Marina’s motivation nor negatively neither positively (because I don’t know what it is like in real) and perceive her works rather positively but with necessary criticism.

I know you are not a fanboy. When I wrote about a bunch of uncritical fanboys around this site, it wasn’t about you. You belong to the same category of the most intelligent site members as Evan Oven, Capitan Jack, Bob (where is he?), pedanticKarl (even if I think he praises too much) and more. Many great users went away during the last year.

    Hello, James.
The only people who have no ideas are dead.

What do you know, or what do you know how to do? Everyone has a unique skill set. If you’re looking for ideas on making a video, think about what you want to teach people, and find a way to make a good presentation. Worry about the quality of content first, and then start thinking of ways to make the presentation more appealing.

This method worked well for Miss Marina in her early videos.

The almost perfect circularity is a clue that ring shape will happen regardless of viewing direction, meaning it is probably a hollow sphere…

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/gunju221/ PaparazziKid

That is a MAYJOR WORDPRESS FLAW. When you get you’re site, if it’s a wordpress newbie, they have no idea that the reply buttons are unlimited. If they keep going, they will go out of the margins.

Maybe they fixed that in wordpress 3.0, I have no idea.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/pedantickarl/ pedanticKarl

Chase, if I remember correctly, there used to be a Reply button on the last post that butted up against the right margin. Not sure though.

The Reply button can be programmed in such a way where the button is always shown no matter where the last comment is. The programming rule would say that the comment has reached the margins and will no longer be indented, but placed immediately below the comment being replied to.

Notice that my reply to one of your earlier comments does have a Reply button.

Americans in Mexico say “Estoy embarazado” when they are trying to say “I’m embarrassed.” What it really means is, “I’m pregnant.”

Italian for “How old are you?” is “Quanti anni hai?” But you need to pronounce “anni” with a double “nn,” because “Quanti ani hai?” means “How many assholes do you have?”

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/fglrx/ fglrx

Szukać” in Polish means “to seek” (in fact these two words in both languages are cognates from Proto-Germanic). In Czech and Slovak there is a verb with the identical pronunciation: “Å¡ukat” which means “to f*ck” (“to seek” in Czech is “hledat” and “Å¡ukat” has the same etymology as English “fuck” and German “ficken”, but with some modifications in pronunciation).

It’s easy for a Pole to get a slap from a Czech woman, even during asking the way.

I had to do it once in high school… My friend had a band and he got sick or something at the last minute so they got me to replace him for a 3 hour show.

We only had a 15 minutes to practice together before the whole show. We spend most of the 15 minutes figuring out what songs I knew that they also knew and vice-versa. I ended up doing like 1/2 hour and 45 minute solos on the guitar. There was a rose in my guitar case at the end of the night but we never knew who put it in there. — true story

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/impaler112/ VenomRocK

Improvisation can be scary but exciting at the same time! To find a rose in your case, you must’ve pulled it off that night plus helping out the other bandmates is always a plus. ;-)
