To my most dearest hotforwords Hottie Girl!

Marina – eGads! I do not have a Google account, so I cannot link to use this Moderator tool.

I guess I will have to submit my homework here, and hope it doesn’t get eaten by Gorby!

    – CSS Style Sheets (you should like that one with all the work you have done lately).

    – RAP Phrases (Which is an acronym of RAS)

    – Laser Light (because “Laser” actually stands for “light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation”)

    – SMS Message (giggle)

    – and lastly, Redundant RAID (because RAID already stands for Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks or Drives). A Redundant RAID may in fact be a backup RAID in the system being described.

Until next time, I remain faithfully yours,

That was an excellent lesson. I was aware of redundant acronyms,
but I don’t recall RAS, or I was trying to forget as there are way
too many acronyms that mean RAS. What would one call an acronym that
    has way tooooo many meanings.

    Some redundant acronyms are:
    AC current
    DC current
    DAT tape
    LCD display
    CPI index
    IBM machines
    NPR radio
    RAM memory

Another interesting acronym is a recursive one such as “GNU”
which stands for “GNU’s Not Unix!”.

    Great lesson!

Hahahaha. English has bigger quirks than RAS Syndrome. For example, why are only 3 out of 6 letters in {knight}, actually pronounced?

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/pedantickarl/ pedanticKarl

    Hi zachmatley.com,
Yes, English sure does have its quirks and in many cases including the word knight, the reason for the silent letters is because the word originates in the German word “Knecht” where every letter or letter group is pronounced. As is the case with many words that made their way into English, the pronunciation rules changed, but many of the letters remained.
    http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?search=knight

Marina talks about that in many of her videos. For example, in the Penny and Dime video she talks about how the word dime came about, but where some letters were dropped from the spelling. Marina also touched on the word knight and the silent letters in a recent video. I’ll have to locate that one.

Marina My dear student ;-). You used the term acronym to describe ATM. Is it not true that to truly be qualified as an acronym the initials must form a word that can be pronounced? Example: IBM and ATM are not acronyms (they are simply initials) because you cannot pronounce them. But BOB (for Bank One Ballpark) is an acronym because it can be pronounced as a word. Am I right or am I wrong My dear Marina?

Also, can you discuss the difference between the words {that and which}. It is one of My pet peaves that 90% of authors and even editors misuse those terms as interchangeable, which they aren’t. It is My understanding that the word {that} is restrictive (such as: the cars that are blue….restricting it to just the cars that are blue) and {which} is all inclusive (such as: software, which runs the computer….because ALL software runs computers and therefore is not restrictive but rather inclusive). I find that even some English teachers do not understand this difference.

    Thank you Marina…Hugs

    Ken Dutton

The redundancy seems to be a way of emphasizing on the letter combination to give it some meaning. this redundancy may prove helpful in verbal communication, similar to the way people jester with they hands when they speak to create emphasis on what they are saying. “PIN-Number” shows what it represents. Personal Identification Number or say “PIN-Notice” represents Prior Information Notice.

    Hello Marina,

Your latest video RAS has reminded me of a problem people have using, “quote, unquote.”

Just like RAS..of which I have, but if not for you I would have gone on not understanding what I was doing.

It then struck me than who better to teach the proper use of the quote, unquote in conversation than The Teacher. From you it will go a lot farther in people, getting it.

People will know they don’t need to do that little two fingers from each hand and opening a, “quote, Unquote”, then closing it with out saying anything in between.

Thanks, your a breath of fresh air in this smoggy city.

I’m glad one popular acronym never became redundant: “TV” for television. They;re used in TV sets, TV Guide, TV listings, TV newa, TV shows, It’s a good aacronym. Unfortunately, it’s also used fir other abbreviations: Tavulu (an Internet domain), Test Value, Therman Vacuum, Travel Voucher, Turkey Vulture, Turnover Voltage, time value, time variance, top view (drafting), transvestite, threshhold voltage, true value, terminal velocity, and many more.

    Hi Ken,
    Regarding the use of acronyms:
The term acronym was coined in 1943 by Bell Laboratories for a word created from the first letters of each word in a series of words.
Generally speaking, I would agree with what you stated Ken, but there have been debates and arguments about what to call a variety of words created that look like acronyms, but are hybrids of initials and pronounceable words such as JPEG and CD-ROM for example.
One could use the word abbreviation instead of acronym to refer to any shortened form of a word or a phrase. If the abbreviation is made up of the first letters of a phrase, it is then called an initialism such as the abbreviation IBM, USA and HTML which would not be pronounced.
The controversy and arguments occur when there are abbreviations that can be either an acronym or an initialism depending on the context of its use, such as URL and IRA.
This wiki lists a variety of abbreviations and how they are commonly used.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acronym
From a partial article, the definition of acronym is given as a word formed from the first letters of a series of words and pronounced as one word such as NATO. Other dictionaries don’t make that distinction.

    Hi Ken,
Regarding the use of the word “that” versus “which”.
Although I agree with your statement regarding the prescriptive rule for those words or as some articles like to call it, “the traditional approach”, many writers have abandoned the traditional rule in favor of clarity and how the words sound when spoken out loud. Sometimes using the word “which” for a restrictive modifier can make a sentence sound better, especially if the sentence already uses the word “that”.

 Babylon’s religious influence is traced eastward to India.[ "New Light on the Most Ancient East", by archaeologist V. Childe (1957, p. 185)]

The {swastika} and the cross, common on stamps and plaques, were religious or magical symbols as in Babylonia and Elam in the earliest prehistoric period, but preserve that character also in modern India as elsewhere.[ "New Light on the Most Ancient East", by archaeologist V. Childe (1957, p. 185)]
Thus, ancient Babylon’s religious influence spread out to many peoples and nations, much farther and with greater potency and endurance than did her political strength.

Like mystic Babylon, the ancient city of Babylon, in effect, sat on the waters, located, as it was, astride the Euphrates River and having various canals and water-filled moats.

Babylon Falls HIM= His Imperial Majesty. The concept of Babylon plays a central role in Rastafarian Ideology: There is only one other word Rastafarians use with more frequency and passion, and that is the name of their Majestic Ruler, Haile Selassie. People who have even a mild interest in reggae understand what”Babylon”means, yet the roots of the word”Babylon”remain unknown to the masses. To gain a better understanding of this term, it is necessary know the full history of Babylon, which starts 6000 years ago in ancient Mesopotamia.
The popular use of the word”Babylon”can be definitively traced to Marcus Garvey’s teachings, which liken the Afro-Caribs in the West to the Jews Exile into Babylon. The institution of slavery created tremendous suffering for those that were enslaved in both of these cases. Many people in Jamaica are still suffering, due to the successor of slavery, which is racism and poverty. :???:

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/marina/ HotForWords

You are correct Ken, acronym in the truest sense would have to spell out a word, but these days people often group initialisms in with acronyms.. almost as if they are a subset, plus some acronyms are a combination of initials and words. It’s almost as if acronym will ultimately take on the meaning of any group of initials that describe a noun since so many people use it that way. So, in a sense, I violated my own rules here by not sticking with the word’s truest meaning. Extra credit for you! :-)

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/mindfx/ Justin Dutton

Thank you Marina (and Karl) for your replies and clarifications. And thank you Marina for the extra credit…lol.

You are correct and I made a video about the word “irony” on how it does not mean what everyone today thinks it means and I got blasted because words change their meaning through misuse all day long and I should just accept that! It’s ironic that I end up doing the same thing in one of my videos!

See what I did there? I misused ironic! :-)

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/mindfx/ Justin Dutton

Wow Marina. That IS ironic.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/mindfx/ Justin Dutton

I guess its like in Spanish, the phrase “Que onda” means one thing to some people and something else to others. Here in Santa Fe, even though close to Mexico was inhabited mostly by descendants from the Spaniards. During that time if you said said “Que onda?” to someone they would have thought you meant “How deep”? But now, since it became Mexican slang (through misuse) for que pasa or what’s happening, que onda is now accepted here as meaning the same as que pasa.

BTW Marina, have you ever been to Santa Fe? If not you should come here for a visit. It’s the second oldest town in the country and the oldest capital in the country. Its European history dates back to the 1500s and in fact there is a building still in existence here that was built in the 1200s. The architecture is like a cross between Spain and Morocco. Cheers

The present day Babylon still sits on the waters at a deep water port. Sailors on ships entering New York Harbor see the name Babylon on the water tower of a small town on Long Island.

I bet that is the legacy of Anna Kournikova.
Millions of young Russian girls must have seen all that happened for Anna so they started to play tennis. If a Russian decides to do something they take it very seriously. And if you see something that works why not give it a go.
There might be millions of young Russian “hot for words” ready to explode on the scene in the next couple of years.
Maybe the tables will turn in our favour… instead of only one “hot for words” that no-one can have maybe there will be a couple million soon an we’ll all have 2 or 3.
p.s. Anna was a fantastic tennis player but her unbelievable good looks turned her into a star for a different reason and it distracted her from maybe accomplishing even more with her tennis.

I love history—What do you think of..

Rudyard Kipling (30 December 1865 – 18 January 1936) was a British author and poet. Born in Bombay, in British India?

The author Henry James said of him: “Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius (as distinct from fine intelligence) that I have ever known.” .. He later wrote to the Times of London , “I was Secretary for some years of the Lodge . . . , which included Brethren of at least four creeds. I was entered [as an Apprentice] by a member from Brahmo Somaj, a Hindu, passed [to the degree of Fellow Craft] by a Mohammedan, and raised [to the degree of Master Mason] by an Englishman. Our Tyler was an Indian Jew.” Kipling so loved his masonic experience that he memorialized its ideals in his famous poem, The Mother Lodge. —here is something sourced fromm wikipedia…The Greek form Βαβυλών is an adaptation of Babylonian Babili. The Babylonian name as it stood in the 1st millennium BC had been changed from an earlier Babilli in early 2nd millennium BC, interpreted as “gateway of the god” (bāb-ili) by popular etymology.[Dietz Otto Edzard: Geschichte Mesopotamiens. Von den Sumerern bis zu Alexander dem Großen, Beck, München 2004, p. 121.] The earlier name Babilla appears to be an adaptation of a non-Semitic source of unknown origin or meaning.[ Liane Jakob-Rost, Joachim Marzahn: Babylon, ed. Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. Vorderasiatisches Museum, (Kleine Schriften 4), 2. Auflage, Putbus 1990, p. 2]

In the Hebrew Bible, the name appears as בָּבֶל (Babel), interpreted by Book of Genesis 11:9 to mean “confusion” (viz. of languages), from the verb בלבל bilbél, “to confuse”. The Syriac form is Ü’Ü’Ü  BāwÄ“l, the Arabic form is بابل Bābil.

    great topic.
look this up,-imagine God took your hair away. and you are left as a ‘norwood 6′ with very little hair on your head. and God is a persistant God. He took your hair away at age 19.
So, imaagine how degenerating that would be. and think about it. What would I do in that sitiation.? Would I wear a wig? would I let myself go bald in front of the world?

    Hi Brian,
I think I can empathize with your statement regarding, “…how degenerating that would be” especially if one’s identity and spirit is dependent on having a full head of hair.

Interestingly, one of my friends from many years ago, was a ‘norwood 6′ at age 19. I didn’t know him in his youth. He and I became good friends at work and he was one of the greatest people you would ever want to meet. He was witty charming and very personable. No matter what bar we would walk into, within thirty minutes he would have several women’s phone numbers and we were always surrounded by women and had a great time. I learned a lot from him and the loss of his hair was never an issue, ever. In fact, I have many friends who were bald at an early age and they are all great and wonderful people.

Now, get this. I had another friend who had a full head of hair, was extremely good looking, the Italian stallion look and he was born with a silver spoon trust fund to his name and he had a 60′ yacht. He was extremely bright having three degrees; one in law, one in electrical engineering and one in chemical engineering. He also had a great personality. Guess what? Could he find any dates to save his life? Nope. Sure, we had the usual babes on the yacht, but were any of those girls interested in him? Guess what? He bailed out of Calif and went back to Boston. Why could he not find any women with all of that, that he had going for him? Lack of height. He was 5’6″ and it infuriated him. Is there a woman out there for him? Of course, but it has been a tough road for him, but lack of hair never has for any of the friends that I know.

    {swastika} True meaning :???:
from The Seal of The Theosophical Society: Swastika, A Sanskrit word meaning “well-being,” “auspicious” — the perennial symbol of good fortune found in the cradle of ancient cultures of India, China, Japan, and the Americas, as well as Greece and Rome (including the early Christians). In Scandinavia it was Thor’s hammer and in India Vishnu’s discus and the Jaina cross. In Buddhism, it expresses the “wheel of the Law.” Symbol of evolution and perpetual motion, the swastika denotes the ever-churning “mill of the gods,” in whose center is the soul, while the bent arms suggest the ceaseless turning of the wheels of life throughout universal existence. When we look at photos of faraway spiral galaxies, we are wonderstruck to see that they clearly resemble swastikas in their vortical motion.
from The Men Behind Hitler, by Bernard Schreiber: The idea for the use of the swastika by the Nazis came from a dentist named Dr. Friedrich Krohn who was a member of the secret Germanen order. Krohn produced the design for the actual form in which the Nazis came to use the symbol, that is reversed, spinning in an anti-clockwise direction. As a solar symbol, the swastika is properly thought of as spinning, and the Buddhists have always believed the symbol attracted luck. The Sanskrit word “svastika” means good fortune and well being. According to Cabbalistic lore and occult theory, chaotic force can be evoked by reversing the symbol. And so the symbol appeared as the flag of Nazi Germany and the insignia of the Nazi party, an indication for those who had eyes to see, as to the occult nature of the Third Reich.
I was made aware of this possibility by someone I used to work with who was from Thailand. He would wear a necklace with a symbol that looked like this.
Out of curiosity I had to ask him why he wore that because I of course associated any bent cross symbol to represent the nazis. He lent me a book on Buddhist symbols in Tibetan cultures. In Buddhism, the swastika signifies auspiciousness and good fortune as well as the Buddha’s footprints and the Buddha’s heart. The swastika is said to contain the whole mind of the Buddha and can often be found imprinted on the chest, feet or palms of Buddha images.

Whenever I see the EI thingy I always think of Einstein. I had to spell his name once on a test or something and I was thinking the “I before E” thing.
The first letter of his name (the big E) is burned into everyones memory but the st**n part I wasn’t sure about. I looked it up later and luckily I was correct.
An easy way (mnemonic) to remember it is like that word puzzle I thought of a couple days ago… he has the same arrangement of vowels but they are doubled. And he is the only person I can think of at the moment that actually has a three-pete… there are 2 “ein”‘s in his name.
Sorry this doesn’t actually help you so, ummm…. –Yep

squeeze this in on edit… “barbara” has it too (the three-pete)

Rastafari are monotheists, worshipping a singular God whom they call Jah. Rastas see Jah as being in the form of the Holy Trinity, that is, God being the God the Father, God the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Rastas say that Jah, in the form of the Holy Spirit (incarnate), lives within the human, and for this reason they often refer to themselves as “I and I”. Furthermore, “I and I” is used instead of “We”, and is used in this way to emphasize the equality between all people, in the recognition that the Holy Spirit within us all makes us essentially one and the same.

Some Rastas accept the Christian doctrine that God incarnated onto the Earth in the form of Jesus Christ, to give his teachings to humanity. However, they often feel his teachings were corrupted by Babylon. Many Rastas[who?], in accordance with their assertion that “word, sound is power”, also object specifically to the English pronunciation of his name /ˈdÊ’iːzÉ™s/ as impure, preferring instead to use the forms in Hebrew (Yeshu) or Amharic (‘Iyesus).

Just remember your good’ol Hammer Horror movies and you’re on the save side: Frankenstein. With this you will never confuse the “E”s and “I”s.

Stein is actually a german word meaning stone or rock. In a name it normally refers to a town on or near a (rocky) hill and if someone got a name with a “stein” in it one of his ancestors came from this town or area.

The pronouciation is a little bit difficult cause you don’t really pronounce the E and then the I. they are pronounced as if they were one. Think on the english I like in “I’m Pete” and you’re on the right track.

BTW: “Steen” like in Springsteen has the same origin but since it’s dutch…

Just saw a picture of the Mexican flag hung ON TOP of the US flag, which is upside down. An upside down flag has always been a symbol of a nation/fort/ship/camp/whatever IN DISTRESS. To say we are in distress right now is an understatement of the highest order. On the bright side, BHO has shaved another shot off of his handicap!

AIDE: ‘Mr President, we have a real problem with the gulf!’
BHO: ‘She-e-e-eit, don’t I know it. I aint been on the links in three or fo’ days.’
AIDE: ‘Well, sir, I was speaking more on LA., MS., and FL.’
BHO: ‘Florida?! Hell, why didn’t you say so. I can drop in on Tiger and play at his course. Call Air Force One, get me a couple of packs of Kools, and refill my lighter. Hey, do you like the way I make my putt, hit that Kool like Arnie did a Chesterfield, and wave to the crowd? Whats the matter? You sick?’ BHO quickly swings his feet off of the desk and remarks: ‘Make sure you don’t get any on my shoes. This shit is Italian. Maybe you should go to the infirmary, you don’t look to good. Make sure you get my squares, first.’
As the Aide backs out of the Oval Office in a half-bow, he remarks to himself once again that he has a VERY, VERY good idea of what it was like in the last days with Hitler in the bunker. Maybe we should all go to infirmary. I don’t know about you, but everytime I see BHOs ass anymore I have a headache, am disoriented and nauseous. Kind of like I was in a bad traffic accident and the air-bag didn’t deploy.

I guess we know whose ass he will kick, too(or attempt to). Its Tiger Woods in a Skins game at Coral Gables! Way to keep the old eye on the ball, mr president. Amazing. Bush quit golfing in ’03 because he didn’t want somebody who had lost a family member in Iraq or Afghanistan to see him in something so mundane while our soldiers and Marines are fighting, bleeding, and dying. And HE was the stupid one?! Yeah, su-u-u-ure.
