    Hey, IL2CF
since you are from Cali, are you planning any trips out here soon?
If so, check the calendar for June, if you haven’t already.
Click the Calendar link above or check Events at the far right.

  • iluv2cutfarts

That would be awesome. I would love to meet Marina and you all. Unfortunately – it has been about 2 years since I was last home, and while the timing for a visit is long overdue, I don’t foresee that changing in the next month.

I will however keep an eye out on the events in the calendar, and hopefully with any luck – I’ll be able to meet up with you all another time.

Thanks for thinking of me Karl, and pointing that out!

Many people on this site have met Marina last year at Comic-Con in San Diego and the book signings in LA and NYC. Just trying to give you a heads up so you can be a good student.

Well, I do appreciate that. I’m a Minnesoooooota boy these days ya know! Maybe she can come out here some time for something like….Hmmmmm….Ice Fishing Day Opener? That would be Super Duper! HAHA! YA BETCHA!

No fair ! Judging by her comment on the article, Marina already knows all the tricks in the book, literally. ;-)

Iluv2cutfarts, I am going to Minnesota in a week!!!! We are celebrating my big bro’s graduation. Where are you?

  • iluv2cutfarts

HOLY CHOPSTIX BATMAN! For reals? OK – well I am in a 1st tier city, just outside of Minneapolis. I doubt we will have time to meet up, but enjoy your stay here in the Twin Cities (you can always contact me here, but I am much older than you. Don’t want people thinking something fishy is going on). Not that I care, but you know how people can be these days.

How old are you again? 14? Go to MOA, and ride the roller coaster and eat lots of Cinnabuns. You’ll meet lots of hot chicks your age there, without a doubt, and if you ever want to play Soccer – this is the town to do it in (but not at the collegiate level – they only have the Women’s program at the U of M). But they do hold the Schwann’s Cup here every Summer (largest amateur competition cup in North America) and you might be able to get some info while you are here to give to your coach back home, for consideration.

Have fun lil’ dude, and maybe we could meet up (just not for a beer – LOL!)

Lennie… PedanticKarl pointed out that if you edit a comment you lose the white space between paragraphs (when you hit return twice). He is correct.. when I test the plugin at the plugin developer’s site, you don’t lose the whitespace: http://www.ajaxeditcomments.com/news/aec-demo-site/#comment-204

I’m sure it’s a css issue. Do you know what is going on?

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/lennie/ Lennie

You can check if it’s a css-issue by just doing ‘view source’ after a refresh in your browser and if you search for the comment you should normally see new lines with BR- or P-tags…

    Just like any other comment…

If you don’t then it’s definitely a different problem and not a CSS-problem.

If I look at what it says in the edit-box when I want to edit a comment, it has already removed some of the newlines. So I suspect a problem with Ajax-edit-comments.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/lennie/ Lennie

    1. I can see the one on your site is older than the one on the development-site. The one on the development site in the source says: last updated: 01/07/2010

    2. Is this also what you use on the iPhone ? When editing is slow ? Because in that case I might have looked at the wrong javascript last time. The timer showing the ‘time remaining’ is not fast.

I wouldn’t be surprised if that is what makes it slow.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/pedantickarl/ pedanticKarl

Correct, the removal of the white space occurs immediately upon entering the Ajax editing window. I first noticed the problem after the Edit feature was restored last week or earlier.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/pedantickarl/ pedanticKarl

Lennie, your last statement may be true, but the iPhone slowness and Editing is not part of the equation, yet.

The iPhone slowness occurs during a comment Reply
    versus Creating an original comment.
Creating an original comment is fast, while a Reply is slow.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/marina/ HotForWords

I could change the CSS of the comments area where if someone hits Return it AUTOMATICALLY puts a WHITE SPACE equal to a line, in other words after <p> character a gap will be created.

This will PREVENT someone from being able to hit return and NOT have a white space.

    What do you think?

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/pedantickarl/ pedanticKarl

    Paragraph1
    Paragraph2

    Edit:
    Got your messages Marina.
The above two lines lost white space.
On iPhone. Gotta run. I’ll be back later.

  • iluv2cutfarts

I noticed the way the AJAX Editor was removing the spacing between lines, but was just dealing with it. Sorry I didn’t report it to you sooner (that’s what I get for having worked for really bad software companies in the past).

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/marina/ HotForWords

    Paragraph 1

    Paragraph 2
    just a carriage return

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/lennie/ Lennie

Yes, ok. Hmmm. I guess it was wishful thinking I could fix it in one go. :-)

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/marina/ HotForWords

If I were to edit the comment above in the Ajax Editor, all of the <p> would be converted to <br> thus losing the space between paragraphs.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/gootar/ gravityboy

    Paragraph 1
    Paragraph 2
    just a carriage return
    Paragraph 1
    Paragraph 2
Yes… I don’t know if it’s allowed but if you put <p> in yourself it is also striped out

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/gootar/ gravityboy

The ajax editor should be allowed to show the page code with all the html tags in it, or would that confuse non-coders?

    test
it also reduces multiply carriage returns to only one

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/gootar/ gravityboy

p.s. that was a good catch by karl.
I remember formatting a lot of my comments so they would look nice paragraph wise but if you look at ones that I after edited (99%) they are all schmooshed together.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/gootar/ gravityboy

hmmm… if you change it to convert all <p> into <br> with a white space &nbsp it might fix it.

    or this <p> into <br> &nbsp <br> &nbsp

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/gootar/ gravityboy

I just read this, ignore everything I wrote above if it worked?

Your way can also be implemented as an easy javascript regular expression.

    test

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/gootar/ gravityboy

    test

    test

wow… even if you have multiple carriage returns and add a blank nbsp character space yourself it still chops it down. left trim, right trim?

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/gootar/ gravityboy

Did you figure this out already?

Anyway, the reason why it works at ajaxeditcomments.com is because they aren’t using wordpress which is stripping and converting a lot of stuff during the initial submit.

So when you use ajax editor you are not getting the original comment reloaded that was left by user you are already getting the wordpress “massaged” version.

I found this very interesting and I was also thinking about getting a blog for my site going so I went to wordpress and and downloaded it and found the php page where all of the stripping and converting is happening…

    /wp-includes/formatting.php
    specifically in function… wpautop($pee, $br = 1) {
    (I think)

If I get a blog going will you come there and bother me like I am doing to you? For me though it would be a good thing… like… “please come and bother me”

I’m starting to get a good idea of how much stuff you are actually doing, it’s kind of amazing.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/pedantickarl/ pedanticKarl

Creating two paragraphs with forced lines using &nbsp

Paragraph 1 (4 empty lines follow)

    Paragraph 2

    EDIT 1:
The empty lines have been preserved :-)
Now test using normal carriage return
    Paragraph 1

    Paragraph 2

    Edit 2: It’s working :-)

    Edit 3: It’s still working

All is good @Marina It is working great!!!

Creating an AT-member command in the Edit window won’t create a linkable mention, but that’s cool.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/marina/ HotForWords

It all works now.. I sent you a comment reply as my alter ego :-) There was a plugin conflict!

  • charles

    Test

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/pedantickarl/ pedanticKarl

Got it. Yeah for alter egos.

Thanks for the info about the plugin conflict.
That’s great news. Glad that is fixed. :-)

  • iluv2cutfarts

I saw your alter ego on-line here earlier today! Soooooo – you DO suffer from Multiple On-Line Personality Disorder! Don’t worry my most dearest hotforwords hottie girl! Your secret is safe with me!

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/marina/ HotForWords

I had a conflicting plug-in and those guys ARE using WordPress. You can tell if it’s WordPress by adding a /wp-admin/ to the url and see what you get.

I had to load something directly because I am using another plugin called minify that combines all of the css and javascript files into one file and that often messes things up. Now it works perfectly. WordPress, believe it or not, is not actually stripping out the extra stuff.. though it does in certain circumstances.

Get yourself a WordPress blog.. there is a reason why they are the most popular blogging platform and are actually becoming a CMS type of system.. oh oh.. was that redundant?

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/gootar/ gravityboy

I hate to admin it but I didn’t know what CMS stood for (until I just looked it up) so I felt a little stupid because then I also didn’t know if it was redundant.

And getting the WordPress blog is a fantastic idea because although it won’t help with the actual music program code… I waist an exorbitant amount of time creating and formatting all my pages myself, it would be great to just have them blasted together.

Plus… I’ve noticed stuff from your pages (and just about all blogs) goes into google within a day…
    test…

Maybe you could look into cloning yourself because if there were extra Marinas around… I could really appreciate having one

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/pedantickarl/ pedanticKarl

    Hi GB,
Lots of hosting companies have WordPress as part of their feature suite. Of course if you have your own server, then you can install the software package yourself and have much more flexibility with it.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/gootar/ gravityboy

Yep, it’s fantastic. I downloaded it before and I was studying a lot of the php and javascript pages.

It wouldn’t be to hard (actually easy) for marina to make a “hot” smiley and add it right in.

A hot smiley would be coool…

    – Always use your own domain name —
I had a geocities site from like ’98 (my first, everybody did?) and through the years it had amassed thousands and thousands of links going to it from everywhere. So I had it loaded up with links to my new site.
Then the idiots (no conscience) at Yahoo closed it (geocities) but made sure to turn it into an advertisement for them. This was a devastating hit for millions of people. And all because google blew them out of the water. Yahoo has all kinds of futile attempts in the works.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/pedantickarl/ pedanticKarl

That’s funny. I had a Geocities site for many years. I had several sites. My first one was 1600WallStreet if I remember. I had a ton of links also and mainly about Linux, but also other topics. I have several of my own domain names and have different server configurations. I run several Linux boxes here at home, but don’t have them online. Once in awhile, I’ll put one box online for a short time.

This photo with the XRM cap I posted on one of your Dailybooth photos refers to Extreme CRM (XRM) which was a marketing slogan for a company I used to work for. Anything starting with an X always makes it better. LOL The product base price was $70K and typically sold for around $2 million with a sales cycle of almost two years. A lot of things have changed in ten years.
