Why does the Follow Me button stick to the screen?
    I mean, I know why… because it’s declared as position:fixed;
But why does it have to follow me around, blocking content wherever it passes.
Suggestion? Move it to left part of the screen, by changing this:
    .wp_followme_c2 {
    right:0px; // instead of right:0px, just use left:0px;
    border:1px solid #FFFFFF;

Ahhh, yes, the Neumann Valley, I know it well.

Isn’t there or was there a controversy regarding Neanderthals, or am I thinking of another anthropological controversy?
That’s right up buzzword‘s field of study.

      • agmlll says:

The English word neanderthal retains a spelling which was changed by the Germans in 1901. Currently in German it would be spelled neandertal.

      • Evan Owen says:

Buzzword IS a Neanderthal, isn’t he?
Score one for agmlll, but several other controversies surround the Neanderthals: were they a subspecies of Homo sapiens, meaning they could interbreed with the Cro-Magnons and their genes might still be with us; or were they a separate species and thus totally extinct? Were they massacred by modern humans, or did they die out because we were more clever at competing with them for vital resources? :?:

      • Evan Owen says:

        [Naturschutzgebiet]

      • Evan Owen says:

BTW, do you have a keyboard with an umlaut u, or do you just type alt-0252 (ü)? :?:

        • pedanticKarl says:

I hardly ever use umlauts since I don’t write in German and I get to use it once in awhile on this site. For someone who uses the umlaut on a daily basis, there are many ways to do it. Here are some ways to do it for people in the US who don’t have a keyboard with umlauts.

          1. Add a specific language to the keyboard encoding in the Control Panel. In this way, one can use hot keys to enter umlauts or other language characters.

          2. Since there are only a handful of umlauts in German, I used to save all of the possible umlauts in notedpad and then just do a copy-paste.

          3. Since I rarely use umlauts, I wouldn’t remember the Alt-key combination, and if I don’t have my crib sheet handy, I use “Charmap” to browse the characters I want.

          4. If I were to use umlauts sporadically and didn’t add the keyboard language set into the Control panel, I would eventually remember the ALT-key combination or have a crib sheet in front of me and enter the Alt-key.

  49. 86mikekl says:

I would like to make a request about the origin of the phrase [Stuck in the mud] which means slow learner. I mean literally it would mean getting stuck in a pile of mud. It would be very interesting to know the origin of the phrase… Anyway… I’ve been watching a lot of your youtube videos and some origin of words/phrases are very interesting, thanks for sharing them! ;-)

  50. pat says:

That’s it! That blouse reminds me of the New Romantic Movement I had an eccentric math teacher(surprise) who said Alice in Wonderland was based on a mathematical equation. Lewis Carroll was a mathematician amongst other things. The Jabberwocky was always my favorite. I have early printings of both books and the artwork is fantastic. My favorite talking animal is Brian

“smocking” weed huh? Apparently, quite a bit!

      • I just think she names her videos like that JUST to get views :| :| :|

        • pedanticKarl says:

So, you would like her to title her videos to get zero views? Many people like me will watch any video made by Marina no matter what the title is.

So, let me guess, your username that you are posting here now is not intended for your site to get views? Why don’t you just name your video titles. A1, A2, A3 …..

Luckily I had extinguished the word hypocrite
          from my vocabulary.

          • hey pedanticgayfagg here is a perfect example of what i am talking about. On the video “The Nexus One Naming Controversy”, that is a fine name, but in Youtube she titled that video “sexting on my nexus one phone” even though I watched it many times, and she didn’t even mention that word! How about instead of “Smoking weed” and all that crap, how about she does what she used to do and name them like “origin of the word …..” or just the word!?
            Good day.
Hope you come out of the closet soon, and finally get some dentures and a lawn mower for that street sweeper thats under your nose
            Good day

        • pedanticKarl says:

Woah, what’s up with all the anger? Gunju took a bite out of you? With a lot of the titles, even if the word is not in the video, there is a connection and sometimes an inside joke. One of these days you’ll get it and you’ll come away with a different point of view. Ohh, and my day is terrific and great.

          • hmm… no wonder my mom says this is a trashy site…. kinda get it now

          • Capman911 says:

Dang Karl, you mean I have been hanging out with a gayfagg. Well I don’t mind if you only had one leg we will still have a great day and harass Evan or Bob when he comes around. I had wrote a hell of a response to his comments, but my meds kicked in and I calmed down to a simmer. Let’s go to his site and troll over there. (JK) Comments like his just give me a headache and if I learned anything from Marina at all it was don’t feed the trolls. She has his IP address why don’t she just ban him? Oh well another day another flamer.

          • hey retard capmann, my IP constantly changes, so if she tried to ban me, she couldn’t HA!

        • HotForWords says:

That is EXACTLY why I title my videos that way on YouTube. You’ll notice that the majority of the top channels title their videos that way. I would prefer not to title them that way, but I have to be competitive.

My site is not trashy.. the titles on YouTube might be trashy but they don’t effect the content of the videos. The videos are as informative as they’ve always been and I attempt to make them humorous, and if you don’t like the slant I take, that is fine, but it’s no different from what I’ve been doing since day one.

The smoking weed reference comes from the video.. I switched it from smoking opium to smoking medical marijuana. Sorry if you don’t find that humorous.

          • James says:

            Hi there Marina,

Please don’t feed the trolls :)

          • It is DEFINITELY NOT WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN DOING SINCE DAY ONE MARINA! IN 2007, AND 2008, the titles of your videos have peen precisely just about the word. Not about sexual crap like “sexting on my google nexus one phone” I think when little kids search stuff on Youtube and they find “Hot Blond Looking For Love” I think it is very trashy, and parents look down on that. I would HIGHLY recommend change of this, ESPECIALLY because you are so popular. :| :|

          • Hs4Mm says:

Any idea when you will be taking your oath and becoming a US citizen?

        • pedanticKarl says:

Chase, even though I understand what you are saying about young kids searching and Marina’s titles, and I might even agree with you on one level, however, in the context of what Marina does, I think you are too young too understand, not only in terms of marketing, but sophisticated humor.

I don’t expect you to understand, nor do I expect you to agree, but may I point out where your otherwise good intentions are misplaced, which is understandable at your age. But, keep in mind there are people that watch Marina’s videos that are the same age as you and they have a different perspective or values.

          1. When you are referring to little kids, one would think that the parents are in control of those kids? If not, then may I tell you that those kids did NOT learn it from Marina. In fact, I can tell you that maybe Marina might actually be influenced by those naughty young kids. Do you want me to point out the X rated URL YOU posted on this site? Did your mother approve of that? You don’t want me to start using the h word, do you?

          2. The use of the word like “sexting” and other words that Marina uses actually comes from user’s requests or haven’t you noticed the kinds of words that young people like you are requesting? As a matter of fact, the word sexting was in the news way before Marina used it in the context of her videos. Go look at Google trends and search sexting. In fact it is an ever increasing popular word, not because of Marina, but look at the articles that mention that word. Who is influencing who????

          3. The fact is that Marina uses very sophisticated humor which many people don’t get. The words that Marina uses comes from current events and everyday news and the titles and videos are prompted by users like me and you.

          4. You are wrong about when you say that Marina’s titles have changed since 2007. Have you gone and looked at the list. Go to he chronological list and look again. Keep things in perspective and understand that Marina did not have a huge audience yet at that time, nor did she post as many videos and therefore was not influenced by the users making large number of word requests. Again, it depends on the word, the context of the word (movie, music, news, etc) and who requested it. All I see is what is done in context. Sorry you don’t see it that way, yet.

        • pedanticKarl says:

Chase, I understand why you are asking the question, “why?” and believe me, I asked the same questions. As I said, most of the videos come from the context of what is happening in the news and what the users are asking for. A week does not go by when someone is asking for the origin of the F word. When Marina first started out, she didn’t have the diverse audience yet where people were making those kinds of requests.

By the way, Marina asked a question back in 2008 on this site (ref. Butterfly video) regarding the use of profane language in her videos. The consensus is that within the context of language origins, no word is off of the table. Also, keep in mind that the words that Marina chooses are words that have at least some interesting story behind them in order for people to watch them. Many words just do not have interesting stories behind them. When choosing a title, it is no different than what the TV and print media do, they try to use catchy titles.

Have you seen the titles that Shane Dawson, ShayCarl and other sue? Those are way out there on the limb. At least with Marina’s titles, they do fit in with the context of the word.

I went back an changed the titles of my old videos so that they would show up in searches better. I have always named my videos this way since the beginning.

I am perfectly okay with “Hooker” and the video being the orgin of that but you turn it into “hot sexy blond with hookers” (not that you have) just a example

Adpositions form a heterogeneous class, with fuzzy boundaries that tend to overlap with other categories (like verbs, nouns, and adjectives). It is thus impossible to provide an absolute definition that picks out all and only the adpositions in every language. The following features, however, are often required of adpositions.

YouTube changed. Now you have to have odd titles to get anywhere, the thing is, this is Marinas life, so she can’t risk loosing money by making a video with a boring title, I don’t know why though, who would search for “smoking weed with alice in wonderland” shane dawson does it too “lady gaga ate my shoes” again.. who would search for that!

    Dear Marina,
You’re always beautiful in your videos. This is a rare treat to see you post a new video during a weekend. I enjoyed it anyway. Someday, I hope you get permission to add a Lady Gaga music video to one of your philological videos.
Most cartoon characters are anthropomorphical. From Felix the Cat, through Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Rocky and Bullwinkle, and even Boris and Natasha. (They’re cartoon character people.) Your favorite is Aphrodite, and my favorite anthropomorph is Hobbes, the tiger in the comic strip, “Calvin & Hobbes.” Hobbes would sometimes bring adult wisdom into childish situations, and it was funny, that way.
I hope you reach 300 Million views, soon. You postede a video to celebrate 100 Million and 200 Million, so I anticipate seeing a good one for 300 Million!

    • pedanticKarl says:

      Hi seesixcm6,
I don’t know if you saw Marina’s comment on the previous video page where she said that she had already gone past 300 million, but YouTube has pulled at least one video from her list which is the Booby video which has 6 million views. That video is no longer part of the total videos upload count. (300 mil – 6 mil = 294 mil)

The current uploaded video views minus that Booby video is now
294 mil views. I am projecting the 300 mil views to be around Apr 15.

    Hey Marina,
I was wondering if you knew the etymology of the word [Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia]]. I know what it means, but I’m interested in the break down of the word. Also, I thought maybe somewhere in the break down, you may be able to figure out the irony of why the fear of long words is a word that’s 36 letters long. Thanks!

  63. jmcargal says:

Anthropomorphism has long been controversial in [ethology] (that’s right ethology not [ethnology]). There is a tendency for us to project onto animals (like Gorby) our own emotions, and this has often been felt to be an improper thing to do and is dismissed as anthropomorphism. In the last few years, influenced by the research of Jane Goodall and others, there is some feeling that such projection may be justifiable on evolutionary grounds which is just as Darwin argued in his great book “The Expression of Emotion in Man and Animals.”

    • pedanticKarl says:

      Hi jmcargal,
Anthropomorphism has some interesting dimensions as I always just thought about it as a literary device such as the word personification.
This wiki sheds some more light on the word.

For the last 40 years I had no idea that anthropomorphism was a literary issue instead of just a scientific one.

Mother Goose Goes To Hollywood (1938)
… great cartoon with caricatures of great stars of 1938: Katherine Hepburn, les Marx Brothers, W. C. Fields, Charles Laughton, Spencer Tracy, Laurel et Hardy, Edward G. Robinson, Clark Gable, Fred Astaire, Greta Garbo… and Fats Waller and the great Cab CALLOWAY. Due to those racist stereotypes, this cartoon has been banned. It’s been nominated for the Oscars… bit it went to Ferdinand the Bull.

  66. Greatest Potential says:

The first-ever film version of Lewis Carroll’s tale has recently been restored by the BFI National Archive from severely damaged materials. Made just 37 years after Lewis Carroll wrote his novel and eight years after the birth of cinema, the adaptation was directed by Cecil Hepworth and Percy Stow, and was based on Sir John Tenniel’s original illustrations. In an act that was to echo more than 100 years later, Hepworth cast his wife as the Red Queen, and he himself appears as the Frog Footman. Even the Cheshire cat is played by a family pet.

With a running time of just 12 minutes (8 of which survive), Alice in Wonderland was the longest film produced in England at that time. Film archivists have been able to restore the film’s original colours for the first time in over 100 years.
