I thought I read that someplace (possibly the YT Help pages and some blogs) where either YouTube is not counting older videos at all, or if the are counting them, they are updating the counts at a slower rate which could be as long as a few weeks between updates. In other words, for videos that get fewer daily views, the slower will be the updates. They didn’t say what those rates are.

Evan, regarding the projection of views, yes I used linear projection based on an average rate of views for the last month.
You mentioned exponential increase in views. What do you mean by that? Typically, videos have some small exponential increase in views within the first 48 hours and sometimes further out, but, after 48 hours, video views decrease exponentially or logarithmically.

But, more importantly in regards to your question, the rate of change of views is fairly constant over time when averaged over several weeks and the changes of that change is relatively slow and linear. Over time, the change of views of new videos and the older videos tends to average around a given steady or slow moving average value. I could have also projected the min and max dates based on known min and max rates of change of views.

I confess to not following M’s viewcount closely, but I seem to recall 100 million views in the first year and a half of HFW, and 200 million views in the second year and a half. That suggests to me an exponential function.

I suppose if I had monthly view counts from the beginning, I could chart the figures on Excel, save as a PDF, and then ask my kids how to upload it to my Facebook account so everyone could view it. :lol:

When taking two data point as you have especially those time frames you mentioned, I can see where you could make that statement and for some of those time frames, you are correct.
