Im not certain of its true origine, but I have always thought of that as a math term, actually. when you subtract two sums you get the difference(ie 5-2=3, 3 being the difference) now if you subtract 7 from 10 you would also get 3 as the difference. therefore saying 10-3 is the same thing as saying 5-2 because they have the same end result or the same difference. now not to get too mathematical its simply applying the associative property(a=b,b=c, then a=c) to reality. so if someone corrects a statement you made with something that means the same thing, you say Same Difference, because both statements have the same end product.

It is a portion of National Public Radio (NPR) interview between a female broadcaster and US Marine Corps General Reinwald who was sponsoring a Boy Scout Troop he brought to his militarybase.
