I thought it had to do with Schrödinger’s cat
A cat is placed in a box with some poison and you don’t know if it is still alive until you open the box. If you open the box you let loose the poison and kill the cat, hence Curiosity Killed the Cat.

  • drewnetwork

“So don’t be curious about anything. You got it?”
    – spoken like a true Russian. I suspect these are words to live by in Moscow.

This really has nothing to do with cats being curious? I opened my car door — and that kitten jumped in my car. I opened my house door — he jumped in the house. I opened the refrigerator — he jumped in the fridge. I open the clothes dryer — he jumped in the dryer. A box shows up — he’s in it. As an accidental roommate of cats — they really are curious — and I really can imagine one of them being curious about something hazardous.

So — the explanation for this expression really has nothing to do with curious cats?

That is a great theory! I think I’ve heard of that as well, except that Schrödinger’s cat experiment implies a state of being both dead AND alive at the same moment.. so the idea of opening the box, thus killing the cat is wrong. But I could be wrong on this.. I am just going by my memory on this one.

I am at the library and found a useful tome in the reference section. I’m curious if you have the Facts on File Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins (3rd edition).

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

As it is an obsolete word, you probabably should just read about it here, rather than holding your breath for M to do it.

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

It’s been done in a previous lesson.

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

I’ll bet that gave him “paws” for thought.

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

No, you are right about that. The idea of the “experiment” is that if an atom that might decay decays, the poison is released and the cat dies, but you can’t tell if the atom has decayed—the cat has died—unless you first look.

Of course you might need nine atoms to decay to actually get the cat to die.

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

Now there’s a curiosity. Why is it [ring tone]? The original bell and the electronic replacements for it—songs, noises, etc.—are not tones in the sense of the dial tone, so the term really makes no sense at all. That is fairly recent history, so I wonder if you can find the origin of it.

I know a little about the three suggestions I’m giving you, but I would love to know more on them.

I would really like you to do the origin on the colloquial word [uh-uh].

Here’s what I know to get you started, some scholars believe it is of Cherokee origin, while others argue it comes from African languages.

Also, another interesting word would be [Quinoa].

For this one, I only know that it is from the Quechua language.

My last one is [Mugwump] which I believe is from the Natick (Massachusett) language.

    At 1:23 Marina said;
“so, don’t be curious about anything, you got it?”

For homework, what am I curious about?
Definitely staying away from being curious about anything.

What if I were curious about nothing, would that make me indifferent or would that count as being curious about something which is nothing?

Maybe it’s safe to be curious about something as long as it isn’t anything, and that something is…. oops, I just ran out of quarters. To be continued…

Hello My Beautiful Fun Lovely Intelligent Teacher.

I was chatting with a friend on Face Book and added the quote

“Decide what you are, what you want to express bythe way you dress.”— Gianni Versace

My friend said “i agree with this statement., we are judged by how we dress and with good reason. if you dress for success , people will see a succesful person and you,ll also attract the right people.

if you don’t look the part, then you,re not likely to get the part:)”

I replied with “AWE you have to watch this video. For you may change your views. One should not judge the book by it’s cover, nor a person by their cloths. This is a designer, what else can he say lol:)

    http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=72581113771&ref=share

    Enjoy:)”

His reply was “Craig , i saw that video about not judging ppl when you first put it up, i agree but we,re talking about in the business sense and like it or not, even if we ourselves dont judge others on how they dress and look, society does..

by the way we do judge , but we suppress or see pass that, well most of us try too..”"

My answer was “lol You are Right A.J. I was not judging you lol I was just writing my thoughts. Looks like you are judging my words lol:))

Yes we all judge, and have feeling about it, just that some let their feeling be their judge instead of of them judging their feeling and saying that is ok to feel this way, and logical think that this is not what that person.

For example “He’s just a A Suit” meaning no heart, and in it just for the money, etc. Yes we have to look professional at time and act that way too. Y

Yet who actually told us this, people in suits? or suit manufactures? I bet if we research this it would be the latter:)) Not to worry I will have on a tie tomorrow:))”

So can you find out about “He’s just A Suit” for me your Sweetness”  Love Craig

    Hello Marina,

I would like to request the phrase that we used to describe when someone messes something up. for example:

I’m never going back to that salon. The last time I went, the girl {butchered} my haircut.

Why do we say {butchered} when referring to the mistakes people make.

    Another example:

George Bush {butchered} a lot of foreign leaders’ names during his speech.

    Thanks! :)

    You mean like this?

  • sw_i_ss

I stumbled onto one of your videos trying to research some Russian words. Very interesting, fun subject matter.

I need help translating the following words into more than just dictionary talk. My friend has avoided translating them for me for some reason and she has never done that before? My Russian is bad so there is real distance between the general meaning and understanding what she said.

    умничка or умница and молодец

Oh and an idea for your next video how about Matryoshka (Russian Nesting Dolls) what’s up with those?

    Thanks,

    Sw_i_ss

I checked and it seems you haven’t done the expression [red herring]. Despite curiosity killing the cat, I’m waaaaay curious how this expression [red herring] got started. Probably some fisherman’s inside joke.

The phrase request I have is [it's a dog's life]. Looking it up I can’t figure out if it is a good or bad thing. Did the saying come form the Chaplin film of the same name? I know your dog is treated well. I know my dogs are [spoiled rotten]. But other info. that comes up is mistreatment and unrescued dogs. Is it a [double edge sword]?

    Thanks Traci,
I see that you are a new subscriber from about two months ago and I welcome you to this great HotForWords site. I hope that you have had a chance to look around and have had a chance see the great articles that Marina has written and video lessons that she has created and you will meet some great people on this site.

I try to be helpful as much as possible. I guess you might say that I am an old timer here since June 2008, and have followed Marina since her first video in 2007.

    Great having you here.

    Hi pedanticKarl,

Why thank you. I’ve read a few pages. It seems there are mostly guys here. Not thats like a bad thing.

My brother used to do that. Oh and he is a North American Native like me. ;-) I feel I should know where that comes from but I don’t. Sorry.

Hey Marina! Can you do that word for us? I really want to know how the phrase came about and does it have origins to N.A.N. Thank you.

  • lexicon2010

Here are some word requests in a little made-up story:

A [watershed] event in my life was when I decided to WALK instead of driving EVERYWHERE. Walking was a good idea except for a few [drawback]s, mainly being that it took all day to get anywhere! :???: It was triggered by a “near” car accident. I was made a [scapegoat] for another driver’s actions, and a third driver decided to [shoot a bird] AT ME! Arriving home famished at the end of the first day of my “no car” pledge, I made some chocolate chip cookies [from scratch]! Mmmmm! I ate one as I was changing out of my [glad rags] and my [bling]. It was a [sea change] in my cookie consumption habit, too! Exhausted, I decided to take a well-earned [forty wink] nap.

    Hi Traci,
Yes, I think you will mostly see guys posting here, however there are actually many, many women that follow HotForWords. Sometimes, you will see many of them posting here, but also you will see many of them on Twitter. Some of the women off of the top of my head that post here are jcr, nearlynot, Damiana, CoolLikeYourMom, misscupcake, shamelesshussy, and Marina of course and many others.

Traci, I saw you mentioning that you are Native American. Did you see Marina’s video on the origin of the word OK where she plays a Native American Native girl. I thought she did a great job. The video is located here.

    OK
    http://www.hotforwords.com/2010/01/24/ok/

What do you think of Marina’s NAN girl?

Two theories: the term [gullible] became applied to those credulous souls who believed the outlandish tales in Jonathan Swift’s Gullible’s Travels. The other had to do with some weird story about a flock of gulls carrying away a bull, which only the “gull-et-bull” would believe.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/CantwrCymreig Evan Owen

    So what’s your “point”?
