Ummm. Actually, the 14th of February.

  • http://youtube.com/jamesingtonthethird James

I do think you should go back to this. After a few videos your voice sounded more acty than natural. Like it was scripted. I also miss the blonde hair and big boobs (this is not me being a man , by the way) that is what I think hotforwords is about. Doing something intellegent whilst being very provocative. Two things that you don’t usually find. I also think that that is partly why you rake in so many viewers. But if you covered yourself in a burkha then you would not have got anywhere near as many subscribers as you have today. You may have made your name but don’t forget that the new people that are to see you still have to feel like I did the first time I saw you.

  • wetsuit5

I like the style as it’s much more intimate.
But not as a steady diet.
You have too much talent to utilize just one mode.

    Dear Marina,
Thank you for your video from the past!
When I was away in Riverside, I missed some of your videos. “Amor”, for instance. I’d like to dedicate a Valentine’s poem for you:
    Amor, amor, amor.
The depth of my love for you has no floor.
    Amor, amor, amor.
The height of my love for you forever soars.
    Amor, amor, amor.
The width of my love for you won’t get through the door.
    Amor, amor, amor.
I hope you return my love for you with even more.
    Amor, amor, amor.
Before everyone gets sick, I’ll do no more.
I hope you enjoy a nice Valentine’s Day in Las Vegas! I’m not wealthy enough to take you there on a regular basis, but someday my great novel will become a best-seller and all will be well.

Good point to your poem, C6: English love poetry has been stifled by the lack of rhymes for “love.” We could do so much more with “amor.”

I went over to YouTube to give you 5 stars for 2 reasons: Because it was great to see one of your older vids, and because I do miss your theme music.
However I will make my comments here on your page because after reading all the rude comments left for you on YouTube I thought it better to do it over here amongst friendly people.
Love Ya Marina, and keep up the great work!

Something negative happened with my perception of the HFW videos since the time when Gorby’s droppings were shown in one of them. Since this happened, I’ve been unable to enjoy the lessons and the unappealing associations with the Gorby’s crap return to my mind every time when I’m watching any new lesson. Hi krews,

    Welcome to HFW!

Marina sometimes has a hard time finding all the word requests in the comments (there are often so many of them), so she uses a specific automatic search method to help her find them all. She asks that when we make word requests, we place them between square brackets like this: [godspeed] so she can just run a search for everything between square brackets. Then all the requests pop into a nice list without her having to list them all herself. Hope to see you around the “campus,’ and have a great day!

    Hi Teacher,
I saw on the email alert that you were soliciting opinions on whether or not you should return to your older style of presentation, and I wanted to weigh in on the topic. As a latecomer to your work, it made sense to catch up on lessons chronologically, so I’ve had a chance to watch the evolution of your content. Have to say that there’s an undeniable, overwhelming charm to your earlier videos that I truly love. The “cute little Russian girl next door” thing tugs at the heartstrings. They aren’t “rough”, as you’ve said, at all, IMHO. In that regard, yeah, I’d like to see more of that.
Times/things change, though, and the photography and production of your newer work is nothing short of excellent, yet not running the risk of being too slickly packaged, due for the most part to your own personal charm. Have to say that when you first changed your hair color, I was nearly heartbroken, but I’ve come to like it very much. Your recent “dinnertime” twitpic sealed the deal. An absolutely breathtaking photograph of you.
Don’t want to overrun your attention span, so to be more concise: personally, I like Teacher as a blonde, doing vids in a kind of “one to one” intimate setting. But this isn’t about me. Nor is it about us, your students as a whole. It’s not entirely about Hot For Words, either. As one who is long past the “hot chick teaches words” attraction of the basic YT type, this should be about Marina. What you want, and how you want to present it.
If you’re happy as a brunette, we’ll be happy. You’re beautiful with any hair color. Present the videos in a manner that satisfies your artistic talents as they grow. That’s what YT was designed for. Those of us who truly have come to love you for who you are (and we are legion) are here to watch, learn, and enjoy. And we will. Make Marina happy, and we’ll be happy.
    Sorry if I got hyperbolic.
    Love to Teacher,
    xoxodc

The Tale of Two Lovers (Latin: Historia de duobus amantibus) written in 1444 was one of the bestselling books of the fifteenth century, even before its author, Aeneas Sylvius Piccolomini, became Pope Pius II. Happy St. Valentine’s Day, Marina! If anything, you have gotten more forceful and daring with your newer videos; yet, there is a sweetness and vulnerability to be seen in the older ones like these, and I miss that.
Of all the theories about the origin of the day, I tend to favor the one wherein Valentine performed Christian marriages in defiance of the pagan emperor’s whims.

  • stigmatasaurus

I agree. There was nothing wrong with her teeth. I fear there is too much obsession among otherwise pretty women with achieving artificial ‘perfection.’ The end result is a sameness, like mass-produced Barbie dolls. Perhaps Marina is trying to get into movies and doesn’t want them to reject her because her teeth don’t look the way the Hollywood folks like them.

[ENTERTAINMENT] :???: … The Saint Valentine’s Day massacre is the name given to the murder of seven people as part of a Prohibition Era conflict between two powerful criminal gangs in Chicago, Illinois, in 1929: the South Side [Italian] gang led by Al Capone and the North Side Irish gang led by Bugs Moran.….

The slaughter exceeded anything yet seen in the United States at that time. (not really–Bless the natives) :-) At first, it was thought that police might indeed have been responsible for the killings, but 255 detectives were soon cleared. Chicago Police scrambled to figure out who had been responsible.

Since it was common knowledge that Moran was hijacking Capone’s Detroit-based liquor shipments, police focused their attention on the Purple Gang.

Public outrage over The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre marked the beginning of the end to Moran’s power. Although Moran suffered a heavy blow, he still managed to keep control of his territory until the early 1930s, when control passed to the Chicago Outfit under Frank Nitti. The massacre also brought the belated attention of the federal government to bear on Capone and his criminal activities.

In 1931, Capone was convicted of income tax evasion and was imprisoned for 11 years.

 sourced from above link…Alphonse Gabriel Capone was born in the Brooklyn borough of New York City…. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neighborhoods_of_Chicago piece through economics

Schiller was born on November 10, 1759 in Marbach, Württemberg as the only son of military doctor Johann Kaspar Schiller (1733-96), and Elisabeth Dorothea Kodweiß (1732-1802). They also had five daughters. His father was away in the Seven Years’ War when Friedrich was born. He was named after Frederick II of Prussia, the king, but he was called Fritz by nearly everyone

Quote–of this date and site– “Against stupidity, the gods themselves contend in vain.” – Friedrich von Schiller 1759-1805

Musical settings of Schiller’s poems and stage plays
Ludwig van Beethoven said that a great poem is more difficult to set to music than a merely good one because the composer must improve upon the poem. In that regard, he said that Schiller’s poems were greater than those of Goethe.

There are relatively few famous musical settings of Schiller’s poems. Two notable exceptions are Beethoven’s setting of “An die Freude” (Ode to Joy) in the final movement of his Ninth Symphony, and Johannes Brahms’ choral setting of “Nänie”. In addition, several poems were set by Franz Schubert in Lieder, such as “Die Bürgschaft”, mostly for voice and piano. In 2005 Graham Waterhouse set “The[ Glove]” for cello and speaking voice….ode to joy german chorus…nice card MARINA!

The Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi admired Schiller greatly and adapted several of his stage plays for his operas: I masnadieri is based on Die Räuber; Giovanna d’Arco, on Die Jungfrau von Orleans; Luisa Miller, on Kabale und Liebe; and Don Carlos on the play of the same title.

Marina, being originally from Eastern Europe like yourself I’d like to know the origin of the word [GYPSY], also [ROMA PEOPLE], and why European Union tells everybody to use [Roma People] instead of [Gypsy] when referred to those individuals!
TVM and keep up the good work!
    Chris

  • jimbotell

Hi Just joined think your great. Was wandering if you could tell me the meaning of the word [Morbidity] as in [duel- or multiple-morbidity]

  • jimbotell

I think it has something to do with Gypsy meaning from Egypt, where as the people historically called Gypsies are actually from Romania.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lSliucgygc&feature=channel_page&FMT=22 Capman911

I like the old style too Bob. Yea that music brings back memories.

  • 401roadwarrior

First of all this was for Marina, anyway:

    1) Gypsies came to Europe from INDIA, again, INDIA, about 500 years ago and settled everywhere in the eastern parts of Europe!
    2) They are everywhere in Europe, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, former Yugoslavia, former Czechoslovakia, Poland, former Soviet Union as well, and last year we had an invasion of gypsies from Czech Republic up here in Toronto, Canada, all asking political asylum claiming they are racially discriminated back in Europe, since then Canada has imposed visas to all Czech people, gypsies or not, traveling to Canada!

  • Rijk

Me too , that old music is her.
definitely go for the old school vid look and sound.

Would alot of Rom people be such a bad thing? Im not sure id say an “invasion” maybe an influx

    Hello 401roadwarrior and jimbotell,
I see that you are both new members here and I welcome you to the HotForWords site. There is a lot to explore here and you will have fun meeting some great people here.

This is an open forum and people are encouraged to engage in discussions even though you wish Marina to answer your request.

I have learned a lot from other people that contribute new information that I was not aware of. When Marina sees your question, she will answer you as well as needed.

Regarding the gypsies, I have had an interest in the origin of that word also and I found an extensive article on several theories regarding the word gypsy and the Gypsy people.

Since there is a long history of a certain type of people, across Europe, many people will have had different experiences and will have used different words for either the same people, or different people.

The article states that there are conflicted points of view from where the Roma or Gypsies originated. Because they arrived in Europe from the East, they were thought by early Europeans to be from Turkey or Nubia. They were even thought to have been from Egypt, and were called, among other things, Egyptians, or ‘Gyptians, which is how the word “Gypsy” originated.

  • bigredgumball

Aw and she just gets prettier

  • 401roadwarrior

I guess you’re a liberal in real life so you always rule in favor of minority rights, right?

You just say the above comment to any Eastern European, Marina inclusive (which I know her by watching Bill O’Reilly for the past 6+ years), and be prepared to to get a “job” as a monk to your local monastery as nobody is gonna be willing to give you any attention any more!

  • http://wired.reddit.com/sexygeeks_2008/?s=top pedanticKarl

Hello jimbotell and I welcome you to the HotForWords site. Enjoy exploring the site and discovering many videos and articles.

See my comment below regarding the gypsies.

  • 401roadwarrior

ok, ok, ok, so the history of the worlds [gypsy] and [Roma people], I’m not interested in the history of the people, I was forced to live around them as they were fully protected by the damn communists as an endangered species, when I left E Europe over 20 years ago they were all called gypsies, now I heard they got a different name, Roma People, what a heck is Roma People, Roma (in Italian) is the capital of Italy, what a heck gypsies have to do with Italy?
So again, the origins of the word GYPSY and ROMA PEOPLE, that’s my one and only question at this very subject.
    TVM

    HI 401roadwarrior,
Yes, you are correct, the people that you and I call Gypsies are
the Roma which are descendants of the ancient warrior classes of Northern India, particularly the Punjab, and they are identifiable by their language, religion, and customs, which can be directly linked to those of the Punjabi in northern India. However, it is important to note that not all “gypsies” or nomadic peoples are Roma.

The Romani language native name is “rromani ćhib” which is the language of the Romani people. It is an Indo-Aryan language and analysis of the Romani language has shown that it is closely related to those spoken in central and northern India.

Even though you mention that the EU is tells everybody to use the word Roma instead of Gypsy as a political expediency, I believe that the Romani themselves urged nations to call the group aligned to India as Romani as the word Gypsy is considered derogatory and not all Gypsies are Roma.

Your word request is a good one and I requested that word back in 2008 on this site. I had been studying Eastern European history whereby I came across many Gypsy/Romani videos, radio shows and televisions programs and where I came across many political groups that have been making an effort to clarify the identity of Romani versus the group of nomaidc people that one calles the Gypsies, but not all Gypsies are Roma.

For example, many of the nomadic people that you and I might point to as Gypsies, may in fact be native people of Spain, Italy and other countries. It might be true that their earlier origin is also from India, but over many hundreds of years there have been splits and there has been confusion of the terms due to the various types of media such as movies, books and so on.

The OED does mention that the origin of the word Gypsy is a form of the word Egyptian, so I guess you can’t blame the Romani people whose customs and language is more aligned with India to chose for their name the Romani instead of Gypsy.
    http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?search=gypsy&searchmode=none

Possibly another set of confusion might arise where the Romani are thought to be related to the Romanians, which is false. The Romanian language is closely aligned to Rome as there was heavy romanization in 106 AD which gave birth to proto-Romanian language.

When Marina does a lesson on your word request, I’m sure you and I will learn some other surprising things. Marina does a great job of revealing interesting stories about the words she does.

What I like about Marina’s video lessons is that she points to subtle differences between words that look alike but have totally different origins. For example, the word Romantic is one such lesson. If you haven’t seen that lesson, it will give you an idea of what I mean.

TVM for taking your time for the (in detail) explanation, academic one of course, one thing is to read and do research, very good and applaudable of course, other thing is REAL LIFE, to be forced to live with them for 25 years (me) or for ever (for those still in E Europe), nobody wants them as their next-door neighbors due to their very dangerous lifestyle, first in crime (no, they don’t need guns, they use the knife to cut off your throat, for real, if you don’t give them your money), pickpocketing is their other natural “job”, let them loose in an unattended parking lot and you will see how that place will look like next morning, anyhow, all I wanted to find out from Marina (as she was shown as very knowledgeable on Bill O’Reilly, show I’ve been watching for over 6 years) the origins of the worlds [GYPSY] and [ROMA PEOPLE], where they are coming from, any connections btwn them, etc.
BTW, all of them are PROUD to be called GYPSY, all of them liked to be called GYPSY, GYPSY is their own heritage, their history and their legacy, none of them will look at you as a racist (they don’t even know what racism really is) when you call them gypsy, when you call them gypsy you make them happy that you know who they are: GYPSIES!
What you call it derogatory, I call it political correctness, also I have many other political correct words, of course all SOCIAL words, that, if this issue is answered by Marina, I will place a request later on.
Also, all people in E Europe, where gypsies have settled in time, are all CHRISTIANS, Catholics or Orthodox, gypsies have NO religion at all, no, they are not atheist (these are freaking liberals in Western World), they simply have no religion and that’s been since ever.
    TVM
PS Hope you people don’t have a problem with people that share the same views as Bill O’Reilly, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, FOX NEWS in general, Marina did not have any problem with FOX NEWS!

Thanks for your great explanation 401roadwarrior and I do understand where you are coming from. I was born in W Europe and have roots on both sides of the family from E Europe. I have had first hand experience with Gypsies as a kid, but I’m sure that it is different than for the adults, and I’m sure every twenty years things change and sometimes drastically so.

No, I don’t have a problem with Bill O., but there are many people are that violently against him as there are people violently against any kind of what appears to be liberalism.

For me, I am on neither side of any political spectrum. If you knew the details of my background, you would understand. However, I have studied the phenomena of political divisiveness, and some day I will publish a book along those lines.

You are correct, academic details is one thing, but having to live it is quite another. I think it was 60 Minutes that did a full show on the Gypsies/Romani back around early 2000s. I don’t know if you ever saw that program.

You mentioned liberalism, as a person who I had no choice but to live in communism for 25+ years (born there) and then 20 years in the West, here it goes: liberalism is IDENTICAL with socialism, exactly the very same ideology, political, economical and especially socially, communism? liberalism/socialism plus NEVER free elections = dictatorship (as in Cuba, Iran, N Korea, etc.). In Europe, they (political parties and people) are not afraid to call themselves socialists or social-democrats, same thing, Socialist/Social-Democrat/Labor Parties in Italy, Spain, UK, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, etc., only here in USA and Canada they call it liberalism or the newer version: progressives, they think like real socialists but they don’t call themselves socialists, and when you call them out, well… call them out on MSNBC, CNN, NBC and other mainstream media and you will see how they react to that!
I cannot be neutral, who the h”"” is gonna give me back 25 years I was forced to live in that damn gulag, also, using another word that fits perfectly within this website, [hypocrisy], Michael Moore and Co. (almost entire Hollywood, most of the Democratic Party, the current residents at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, etc.) they are all in love with socialism (oops, sorry, liberalism/progressive values) but NONE of them ever lived, let’s say, CUBA, all have taken FULL advantage of what “evil” capitalism has built in North America for so many years, in Cuba? private enterprise/business??? Michael Moore likes Cuba’s health care but he never lived down there like an ordinary Cuban, if this is not hypocrisy I don’t know what else it is!!!
And btw, I’m self employed, working for myself, small business owner…
    Nice talking to you.

Sort of hard to truly reply to this thread, not replying to anyone in particular. OK. In the Romani language — rom = man, roma = men. This is not all that uncommon for highly insular tribal cultures, and the Gypsies are among the most insular in the world (which is probably why anthropologists still don’t know that much about their inner society). As a comparitive example, Navajo and Apache don’t call themselves by those tribal names, they call themselves “Dine” or “Dinneh,” which means ‘people.’ Similar trends exist throughout native tribes in north and south america…and yes, if you’re thinking ahead, the implication should be obvious…if this tribe is ‘people,’ that means they might think of everyone else as ‘not people,’ which is often the case, and might be part of why while Romani have strong ethics within the clan unit, they often seem to have absolutely ZERO regard for the property or well-being of outsiders.

The pain the the arse part comes from the fact that Romanians call themselves “Romani” (plural), though as any Romanian will VERY quickly tell you, there is NO relationship between Romanians and Roma/Gypsies (even though there is a huge Roma population in Romania). In other words, Romania does directly relate to Rome, Romanian is a Romance language and Romanians strongly self-identify as Latin or even Roman people. I don’t think that any historian or linguist would question the assertion that the ‘Roma’ term for gypsies is pure linguistic coincidence and has no connection with Latin Roma, Romani, or Romanians.

Various ‘Gypsy’ groups call themselves by various names across europe (and for that matter, throughout Turkey and large parts of west and central asia), but the unifying factor is the language which clearly shows that Gypsies in England, Spain, and France are ethnically identical to the Romani of eastern Europe (not counting people misidentified as ‘gypsies,’ such as the Shelta or Yenische, two groups who at least appear to be native European groups, though they live an insular nomadic lifestyle not that different from many nomadic Gypsy clans). As for the Gypsy name, I’d be curious to see Marina’s research as well. As for all I understand, there seems to be little or no doubt among historians that the name is a misidentification of the people with Egyptians (early texts even call them Egyptiens and Gyptiens)…the question remains if it was an error on the part of the Europeans, or a con job played by the early Gypsies — the story being when they arrived in Europe, they claimed that they were exiled Egyptian christians. The one main point of logic to support this story (though proof may well be impossible) is that when they started showing up in Europe, in the 13th-14th centuries, you have to understand that Spain was mostly Muslim, the Muslim Turks were kicking the crap out of the eastern Roman empire (the ‘Byzantines’) and making their first footholds in Europe, and the crusades were over and totally lost. European christianity was reeling a bit, so the idea of some non-Christian darker skinned foreigners showing up on the eastern borders would have probably not been very welcome — they might have been lynched at every border crossing at which they appeared. Claiming to be Christian exiles, though, and they might have been allowed entry. Just speculation, but there ya go.

I’ve always been interested in Gypsies, not in small part because I have a good deal of nomadic blood (but not Gypsy) and am curious about anyone living the life, but after endless negative experiences with Gypsies everywhere from Paris to throughout eastern Europe, it is extremely difficult to notice a Gypsy without thinking “oh crap, here we go.” My own life has indicated to me that reliance on generalizations of an entire population can lead to lapses in judgement, but the only good times I’ve had with gypsies is listening to their music…from a distance (Django Reinhardt rules!). Otherwise, in all my experiences, they have come across as everything from unfriendly or hostile, manipulative, to downright predatory.

Thank you for your input traveller23. That was quite a bit of detail. So, Marina won’t have any choice  but to do this word now as requested by 401roadwarrior and you. It seems that the word Gypsy has taken on a life of its own and at least the three of us have a great interest in the word.

The information regarding the possible con job of some people that claimed themselves to be exiled Egyptian Christians somehow rings a bell, but I don’t recall where I may have heard of it.

Yes, the Romanian connection is confusing for many people as I found out many years ago when I did my research. One of our good friends here on this site is Chemikal who is from Romania. So, if he has some time between his intense studies, he might contribute what he knows.

Hi Karl, TVM but I’m just a humbled (legal) immigrant, a former one, for a long time a naturalized Canadian, I strongly promote the free exchange of any kind of opinions, as long as you do it in a polite and friendly way, I despise personal attacks, Toronto is a very ultra liberal city, identical with your own SF, so you figure out how easy is for a guy like me, pretty traditional, conservative, proud christian, to have a peaceful life up here, but you gotta make it alive, that’s why I’m like ‘oldglory’, always stand tall and never bow to anybody, aka Arab kings or other emperors! ;-)
In time I’ve been blessed by God to have a chance to travel around the entire beautiful USA, 48 states on 4 wheels, every year I vacation only in the States, mostly South Texas or S Florida, I’ve been twice in California including LA, honestly LA is not a type of city I like very much, too liberal, anyhow, San Diego is my favorite place in California, also Sacramento is very nice, of course Pacific Hwy is a MUST to see in California, also I’ve been all the way to the Waterbed in the Death Valley, beautiful country you have over there, hopefully you wont change it too much, w/out TRADITIONAL America and the GREAT Ronald Reagan we in E Europe would have never gotten our freedoms we had missed for 45 long years!

Don’t worry Karl, I’m from Romania, but left in 1987, anyhow, gypsies are pretty much everywhere in E Europe, before 1987 I was allowed to travel only to other E European countries, so I’ve seen them in Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, even E Germany, never been in Soviet Union, somebody mentioned in a reply that they are in “huge” number in Romania, yes, maybe up to 2%, , also we are christian orthodox, Bulgarians and Serbs as well, the rest of E Europeans are Catholics, why I mention this, gypsies have NO religion, that’s how their “traditions” have been for centuries!
Also, you can single out a gypsie out of a sea of E Europeans, how? very simple, they look identical with any individual from parts of India/Bangladesh/Sri Lanka, btw very good people in that area, my point is that they look different than the regular Europeans, skin color, that’s it, same who you can’t make a difference btwn a Swede and an Italian, well, get a course in European demography!
Last year we had a couple of THOUSANDS of Czech gypsies coming to Toronto within 1 month, like an invasion, some with 4-6 kids, some of them couple of months old, soon after Canada has imposed visas on ALL Czechs, gypsies or regular (blond) Czech citizen, they claimed political asylum in the basis of racial discrimination in Europe, and yes, I agree with them, their life has changed dramatically after 1990, full of hardship after 1990, before 1990 they were all protected by all communist governments, no jail time for any theft they were committed on a daily basis, after 1990, all go to jail for any criminal activity, that’s why they cannot live there anymore, too much “persecution” over there, so try to find a new world for their one-and-only kind of “activity”: pickpocketing!

He was one of the most influential composers of the 19th century. His works are frequently performed in opera houses throughout the world and, transcending the boundaries of the genre… :-)

  • traveller23

Don’t quite see why you’re rolling your eyes at the ‘huge’ comment, considering that you’re the one bringing up the matter that they’re ‘everywhere’ in eastern europe. They’re Romania’s second largest minority at ~500,000 in a country of 20 or so million (and that’s just based on estimations from gypsies who cooperated with the census — who knows the actual population) and are a large enough population that I would see more than one in any large town or city in Romania on any given day. Plenty in Ukraine, Bulgaria, and Hungary as well, but nowhere did they stick out as much as in Romania. Maybe it’s because there are more places to hide in Romania with its extensive mountain ranges and valleys, while Hungary and Ukraine tend to be more flat and thoroughly farmed. Though Bulgaria has plenty of mountains, too, so that hypothesis might not be viable. Well, whatever, from all estimations I’ve read, Romania and France are always listed as the two countries with the highest gypsy populations (and I don’t know why France except maybe because of a lot of tourist prey and France’s liberal immigration policies), so given the overall world population of Gypsies (referring to ‘true’ Roma-speaking peoples), the Romanian population is relatively huge compared to everywhere else in Europe (and possibly the rest of the world as well), even the much larger nations of Russia and Ukraine — though my closest high-risk encounter with a gypsy threatening me for money was around midnight on a train platform in L’viv!

In intellectual property law an eponym can refer to a genericized trademark or brand name, a form of metonymy.

Sometimes, metaphor and metonymy can both be at work in the same figure of speech, or one could interpret a phrase metaphorically or metonymically. For example, the phrase “lend me your ear”

 ...An eponym is a person (real or fictitious) from whom something is said to take its name. The word is back-formed from “eponymous”, from the Greek “eponymos” meaning “giving name”. .Kleenex is a brand name for a variety of products such as facial tissue, bathroom tissue, paper towels, and diapers. Kleenex is a registered trademark of Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc. Often used as a genericized trademark, especially in the United States, “Kleenex” is in fact owned and used as a trademark by Kimberly-Clark. Kleenex products are manufactured in 30 countries and sold in more than 170.—Facial tissue is often referred to as a “tissue”, or by the genericized trademark “Kleenex” which popularized the invention and its use….

    Trademark
The word “xerox” is commonly used as a synonym for “photocopy” (both as a noun and a verb) in many areas; for example,”I xeroxed the document and placed it on your desk.” or “Please make a xeroxed copy of the articles and hand them out a week before the exam”. Though both are common, the company does not condone such uses of its trademark, and is particularly concerned about the ongoing use of Xerox as a verb as this places the trademark in danger of being declared a generic word by the courts. The company is engaged in an ongoing advertising and media campaign to convince the public that Xerox should not be used as a verb.

To this end, the company has written to publications that have used Xerox as a verb, and has also purchased print advertisements declaring that “you cannot ‘xerox’ a document, but you can copy it on a Xerox Brand copying machine”. Xerox Corporation continues to protect its trademark diligently in most if not all trademark categories. Despite their efforts, many dictionaries continue to mention the use of “xerox” as a verb, including the Oxford English Dictionary.
In 2008, Xerox changed its logo to a red sphere with a white X with three grey stripes. The change is meant to reflect less on the photo copying duties Xerox has carried out and instead to refocus on document management and solutions across the world for companies

    Hi leonard,

A clue about the Picts: the Welsh called them prydyn, which apparently not being a term of Celtic origin, may have been what they called themselves. Prydyn later morphed into [Britain].

I would like to request the word [chode]. There are some various, and possibly incorect meanings used, especilly in American slang. Back in college, we call people who were jerks, chodes. If any one really knows, it is hotforwords. Keep smokin’ Marina!

  • agmlll

Origin of the word [eggplant] since it seems to have nothing to do with eggs.

  • Faiiliien

Umm, well, I was just wondering if you could make a video explaing the meaning and origin of the word (or words, I’m not sure :-S) [godspeed]? As i’ve heard it on t.v a few times but no one I know can explain what it means. Thanks.

    Hi fishymack,
I was going to offer the term metonym or metonymy as a word that denotes one thing but refers to a related thing such as plastic being a metonym for credit card or kleenex representing a tissue. I see that LeoNard has already suggested that as a second comment to you.

Alternatively, although not a single word, the phrase “generic brand” or “generic trademark” might be an option. For example, the pharmacist might ask; “do you want product xyz or is the generic brand OK?”

As an aside, but a point of interest, did you ever see Marina’s video related to your question where Marina explores the originally trademarked word Heroin which lost it’s trademark status due to common use of the word heroin? That video doesn’t address your question specifically, but it is related and an interesting video to watch.

    Hi Marina,

As a nature geek, I thought it might be cool if you could do some words that are used to describe groups of animals, such as:

    [murder] of crows
    [pack] of wolves
    [school] of fish
    [pod] of whales
    [gaggle] of geese
    [skein] of ducks

    Bye!

  • davidd

    Faiiliien,

Marina did “godspeed” in the lesson for “speed.”

  • Faiiliien

    oh, cool, thanks.

How about the origins of our not so favorite words – [cuss] words.

But I am sure that as a teacher, you do not want to go before the school board answering their questions as to why you were swearing in class at your fragile students.

  • atwaterkent

    those and others such as:

    [forest of trees]
    [cache of jewels]

I’ve always wondered about words used to describe the [increasing size of things]. Trolls, keep it clean. e.g.

[bodies of water: puddle, pond, pool, reservoir, lake
moving water: trickle, creek, stream, river
streets: path, court, place, drive, street, avenue, boulevard, highway, freeway, interstate
communities: neighborhood, town, ville, city, region, county, state, country]

  • scoutsniper0069

I would like to suggest the word, [altruistic].

  • originalistrick

You’re a trip, leoNard. I always love hearing from you.

When I was in school (during a sober, lucid, non- partying moment) I got to play in a production of Aida which included members of the symphony, opera, lyric opera, wind ensemble, symphonic band, cheerleaders, and Bevo. OK, just kidding about the cheerleaders and Bevo, but you can imagine the magnitude of this effort. It was really fun.

  • originalistrick

    See “t’aint”. ;-)

    [demagogue] –I second 401roadwarrior request……….Sycophancy means: :|

    1.Obsequious flattery; servility.
    2.False accusation; calumniation; talebearing.
3.The character or characteristic of a syco
phant…—-Submissiveness is the incidence or trait of voluntarily yielding to the expressed will of another or some display of force. It can be found in everyday human and animal interaction. Submissiveness in humans can be a benign aspect of the social fabric, or it may be part of other problems that a person experiences.

Within human relationships there may be a submissive partner. This partner may be trying to appease the others through agreeing to their command. If they are otherwise healthy this partner may be content. If one or both of the people are experiencing chronic, pervasive emotional distress then the sex partners or individuals may require re-evaluation.

People who are eager and willing to take on a recurring submissive role in a relationship or who fetish/fetishize the trait of submissiveness may seek out others that share their interest or form long term pairings based on consenting to heightened levels of submission in a relationship. This may be incidental in certain cultural or social groups, or may be explicitly expressed in others such as the dominance and submission part of the BDSM subculture………

*** [[Lordosis behavior]] refers to the position that some mammalian females (including cats, mice, and rats) display when they are ready to mate (“in heat”).
