yumPhoenix dactylifera commonly known as the Date Palm, is a palm in the genus Phoenix, extensively cultivated for its edible sweet fruit. Due to its long history of cultivation for fruit, its exact native distribution is unknown, but probably originated somewhere in the desert oases of northern Africa, and perhaps also southwest Asia. It is a medium-sized tree, 15-25 m tall, often clumped with several trunks from a single root system, but often growing singly as well. What is a good word for fear of smart and sexy lady?…(leonard did the filling out of date form…3rd try) [tart] —- is a pastry dish, usually sweet, that is a type of pie with an open top not covered with pastry.— dates too…i’m excited ;-)

I’d like to request the word [Toque].

Why is it that Canadians like to call their knit caps toques?

  • http://twitter.com/HotforThai Bob

Since you’ve brought the subject up, can you tell us the truth about [romance] and [romantic] in the common vernacular and without exaggeration or invention? What do the Romans have to do with it?

Homework: why yes I call them dates. Sometimes I call them Pookie, or sweety, or hunnybuns.

  • doncross2bear

Great vid. I gave up dating (that’s the word I used) a couple years ago. Can’t seem to pair up with a lady who won’t rip out my heart and eat it like an apple :(
I’d love to enter the contest, but I fear that my appearance may ruin your dinner appetite. My current motto: “If the women don’t find you handsome, they should at least find you charming. But chances are they won’t find you at all.” Love to Teacher, dc xoxo

Bob, this is obviously a question of entomology, not etymology: “Rome ants” and “Roman tics.”

Hey, what do you expect from an insomniac at 4:30AM?

  • wetsuit5

HW: The liason itself = date, The object of the liason = Sweety.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/CantwrCymreig Evan Owen

Yeah, what’s the entomology of [web]?

[website] itself is thought to be either a transliteration of the Russian веб-сайт or translation of the Welsh gwefan, lit. “web place.”

Marina, don’t give up hope. I would love to walk on the beach with you and discuss etymology. There’s bound to be someone half my age in California with the same interests.

So a date is a romantic liaison then? I always thought that a romantic liaison was a romantic liaison and that a date was a mere rendez-vous or a small brownish fruit? Bah! Who cares! What is said in California stays in California!

Alright leonard!! Great video Marina!! Homework: I haven’t dated since the 30′s. I looked up the definitions of words I use in place of date and most were slightly related–[wingding] [hootenanny] and [shindig]. Probably just personal slang. I did some extra credit and found some info. for your beach boyfriend.

    Dear Marina,
You look great in a black bikini top! And you really blew a kiss for the first time! (You usually superimpose a drawing of a kiss mark.) I liked that!
A “date” doesn’t always refer to a romantic liason. It can just mean a social meeting, such as lunch at the Blu Jam Cafe, or to go to the movies, or to see a Lakers basketball game. If a “date” only meant a “makeout session”, then I’d be embarassed to hug, cuddle and kiss you inside a Lakers basketball game! The crowd might say nasty things!
But since I like your definition of a “date”, I’ll try to win that contest for a “romantic liason” with you!

{Rendesvous}? I have not had a chance to get a girl out on a date in two decades. They all turn me down, never call my phone number or are just plain not interested. I had signed up for Twitter because you had said I might have a chance of a lunch date with you as a prize. Loneliness did not make me a successful scientist; it made me quit science altogether!!

Hmm always called them dates… then more dates ment “going out together” then there was “going steady” which ment that was the only girl you would date ( i foolishly always honored this arrangement..sigh) You know… “dates” never seemed to work out well. Establishing meaningful friendships always worked better. Marinas really pretty (obviously) … I think this is a good angle for her to explore. Shed get more out of fun conversation and common interest here with her fan base. Otherwise she probably picks up some real dotards.

Hi Marina, I am interested in the origin of the word [fuck]. Yes, THAT word  . It is a noun, a verb, an adjective… what isn’t it?

I know my request is a bold one that may make someone  while explaining it, but f u c k is a word too, despite the censorship. It deserves an explanation of origin, don’t you think?

I heard it was an acronym, meaning “(F)ornication (U)nder (C)ontrol of the (K)ing,” referring to taxation of prostitution in American Colonies during the British rule. Am I wrong?

    Cheers.

    Ducking the Devil (1957)
Tasmania is the only natural habitat of the fox-sized creatures, the world’s largest [marsupial] carnivore. The animals release a foul odor under stress, and they screech and scream when they feed, a behavior that led to their name. Their powerful jaws enable them to eat entire cows, including bones and fur.
…thanks for the reminder from a tweet of HFW…The Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) belongs to the family Dasyuridae. The genus Sarcophilus contains two other species known only from Pleistocene fossils, S. laniarius and S. moomaensis. The relationships between the three species are not clear. Phylogenetic analysis shows that the devil is most closely related to quolls, and more distantly to the extinct Thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger).**^**The devil stores body fat in its tail, so unhealthy devils often have thin tails. An ano-genital scent gland at the base of its tail is used to mark the ground behind them with its scent. When agitated, the devil can produce a strong odour, its pungency rivalling even the skunk.

  • runawayscott

Here’s the question; “do I really want this date?”

I’d love nothing more than to spend time with our gorgeous teacher but I gotta say that I don’t know how I’m gonna feel afterwards. I know I would never stand a chance with Marina but the date would probably leave me with false hopes aas they usually do. What am I worrying about, I’ll never win anyway.

One foolish episode was of a christian who actually tried to convert his girl date on their first date!! Sounded goofy to me!! Good ol Roger Lodge was the host ofr BLIND DATE. It seemed to give me hope that I did not have to have a million dollars to get a date with a girl. But I hear from outdoors some assheads degrading me saying I was too fat, too poor, too old to get a date with a girl!! My response is SCHOOL’S OUT!!

A date with that HFW chick?
What’s her name, Marina Rodina or something?
She’s Russian or somthin, isn’t she?
Maybe if I wear my Ooshanka from Irkutsk in -60C and take a photo of myself I’ll win an airplane ticket to La La land and lunch at STK?
I like steak sandwiches. Thai would be cool too. Or Mr Chow’s with Pauley Shore? Did I do the painting of Marina Rodina before or after that video in the street. I still think “Rodina” is a cool stage name for Marina. Now that’s she’s going truly digital and SUNthetic with the wigs she can play all kinds of characters (that black t-shirt tough is more subtle and cool in this video than before. I’d say develop her character more like a brother of Marina, who annoys his sister and makes fun of her- not like he’s “hot” for her…let the audience do that, as the brother points out what Boobgirl is doing.

That reminds me, haven’t I heard that “win a date with me” thing before? The lunch date the NASCAR guy, 12-14 months ago? I’m curious if the guy had fun- or if it even happened. Please excuse me if I missed it, but after it was announced I never saw anything go by afterwards. No video. No mention of “BillyBumpers and I had a great date.”

Gee, now that she’s going digital and synthetic, if I win a date with MOMO, I hope she’ll wear a “Mommy wig” and Lady GaGa Playtex Mommy bra and retro 60′s glasses and let me call her Theodore!
We can dress as chipmunks and go to a Veggie place.

OK, OK, I’ll play the game at the date site. I get Russian chicks hitting on me online all the time as it is. Ukranians rock. What I’d like to find at that baiting…er DATING web site is a chick to go see DIANA KRALL in concert with… anywhere… or a driver who knows how to handle a Porsche in Europe and would like to go to Stuttgart next summer to pick up my ’11 model year TS with me and break it in in the Alps and of course on the ‘bahn. It’ll be 550 hp/520fp for 10 secs, lightweight carbon body with ceramic brakes (if any hot footed lady is out there, I think we’re looking like a June build and a July pickup. One-two week mind blower in Europe and we take it back to factory so car can be in US in September)

I wouldn’t say “no” to a date with MO, but I’m only available in March now. That’s when I’m doing meetings in LA and Burbank. Frankly, I’d just as soon stay the BS “father figure” she takes for granted (MO told 26,00 people on this site (or whatever the number is here) in a posting a few weeks ago that she loves me like a father. But Paris doesn’t bother responding to business email-let alone gifts. No problem. You know Daddy (look at Paris Hilton’s and see me smiling through). We’re very forgiving and love our snotty little girls… you know, the ones who do BoobTube and who do chest BAIT for…

HEY GANG! Did you notice that “Date” rhymes with “Debate”!
I am a Masterdebater! I do it every day! I have a lot of time on my hands!

Einstein thought you could smell time.

What is the origin of [Seduce] [Seduction] :?:
Would you rather be seduced or [swept off of your feet]?

Is there a difference between being [seduced] or swept off your feet other than the length of the relationship? If it lasted a long time it was [sweeping off of feet] if it was short is was [Seduction].

What is the line of demarcation between the two :?:

Another of my romance problems might be harassment by the FBI. I had written to the author of an Al Capone webiste called “Gambino.com” about legal aid once against the pigs. Some of them government pigs are human excrement. I do not have a criminal record. It is a tactic to try to make me go back to college.
Toleldo, Ohio seems to be a FEMINIST CAPITAL.. We have had a 30 year congresswoman named Marcy Kaptur. We have had a female mayor in the 80′s named Donna Owens. And toledo has female judges and other polticians. Maybe this is why the police demaind I show such respect for womein in the stores. A female psychologist once told me the Krogers was a good place to me et women. Another had told me that internet dating was a good way to meet women. I had seen or heard on the news that some cities in Russia and Italy the women read the news in the nude! The poles of North Toledo also gave me hate over this. It is not a crime for a man’s wife to work outside the home. I say they are the stereotypical POLISH JOKES about whom Polish Joke books were written in the 70′s. they had a sex crimes detective being interviewed during one Piolish Village Festival and the man did not want his faca shown on TV as he was afraid of being murdered in retribution by someone. Maybe their “feminist friendly policing” is politically motivated to suck up to women polticians and women voters. Maybe I would like to live in Russia or Western Europe where things do not seem to be so bad in that area! They tossed out my science career because I hated the CIA and whoever elso is harassing me over women. They think next door they talk down to a little kid!!! I have been two years to grad school!!

Arachnophobia is a fear of spiders. Spiders are arachnids, hence the ‘arachno’ part. This comes from the greek ‘arachne’ meaning spider.

“Let them eat cake”…why not?….[margherita pizza] ——In the 1st century BC, the Latin poet Virgil refers to the ancient idea of bread as an edible plate or trencher for other foods in this extract from his Latin poem, the Aeneid:

Their homely fare dispatch’d, the hungry band
Invade their trenchers next, and soon devour,
To mend the scanty meal, their cakes of flour.

Ascanius this observ’d, and smiling said:

“See, we devour the plates on which we fed.”

These flatbreads, like pizza, are from the Mediterranean area and other examples of flat breads that survive to this day from the ancient Mediterranean world are focaccia (which may date back as far as the Ancient Etruscans), coca (which has sweet and savory varieties) from Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands, the Greek Pita or Pide in Turkish or Piadina in the Romagna part of Emilia-Romagan in Italy. Marina!!!—Could you do a show on [BREAD]….HotForWords makes words tasty

The origin of the word “pizza” is unclear, but by 997 it had appeared in Medieval Latin, and in 16th century Naples a galette flatbread was referred to as a pizza. The pizza was a baker’s tool: a dough used to verify the temperature of the oven.[citation needed] A dish of the poor people, it was sold in the street and was not considered a kitchen recipe for a long time…sourced from link

  • http://wired.reddit.com/sexygeeks_2008/?s=top pedanticKarl

    Hello hotrocky,
I would like to address your question and concern.

First, keep in mind that I am not speaking for Marina. I have not touched base with her on this, however, such emails are very common and I am familiar with similar emails in the past as well as some comments she posted last year.

Last year, Marina posted a comment regarding finding a cheaper alternative to the company she was using. Sending emails such as the cards that Marina sends out can get very expensive if one wants to send out let’s say more than tens of thousands of emails. So, it seems this email served two purposes. One was to let you know about the latest lesson, and second it is a way for Marina to know who is still interested in receiving email notifications.

I received what I presume is the exact same email that you received. If after you read my comments it seems that my email is different from yours, then ignore my comments.

You did not identify an important piece of information which is the Subject line. My email said; A new lesson from HotForWords. Did your email Subject line say that? If so, then I presume that we received an identical email and I will proceed with my comments.

    Regarding your questions:
You said that your email asked you to re-sign up. Presuming your email and mine are identical, I did not see that wording anywhere.

My email said; “Please confirm your continued interest …”
I am being very picky about the wording because re-signing up and confirming may seem like the same activity to you, but actually can and usually does have very different motives which I won’t get into, but is very common in the industry.

    Regarding Thunderbird.
You said that Thunderbird labeled it as scam, but often erroneously does. I disagree with that characterization. All filters do their job based on a set of rules. An erroneous flagging would occur if an email was flagged where there was no rule to be broken which is extremely rare.

The usual terminology that is used is False Positive and False Negatives. Scam filters that are very simple like in Thunderbird will present you with many False Positives. If you don’t like that, then you can turn it OFF. You can also activate your Junk filter which works differently and you have more control over your emails.

Keep in mind there is a difference between “scam” and “spam” (junk) and there is a difference between sophisticated filters and simple ones. That scam filter is very simple.

In Thunderbird under Options, then Privacy, you will see two tabs. One labeled E-Mail Scams and one labeled Junk. The Junk filter refers to “spam”. Notice that the Junk filter can be trained by you where the Scam filter has no user options.

This is a huge never ending topic and there is way too much that can be said about it.

Karl, The Thunderbird scam filter tags all messages that have to do with guns rights, liberty, Ron Paul, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights or Fully Informed Jury rights, so I tend to think it was programmed by a Socialist or lover of big government. I’m still getting the notices from HotForWords, so I have not responded to the other mail. Thanks for the info.

Dear Marina – I am wondering if there is an etymological correlation between the words свидание (meeting, date, rendezvous) , данный (given) and дать ( to give). If so, it is interesting, don’t you think, that the same connection exist in the English word “date” as you so beautifully point out? Hi Rocky,
Sorry Rocky, but you are confusing SPAM with SCAM.
Scams are emails intended to deceive and in almost all cases, the keywords like guns, constitution, etc has nothing to do with it.

SPAM mostly does have something to do with keywords and you are able to manage those keywords using your SPAM filtering. If you need help with that I can assist you.

    SCAM and how it works
Scams or commonly known as phishing emails are intended to deceive. There are many ways I can send you an email to deceive you and the SCAM filter will Flag that email.

Here is just one example of a deception and I want you to prove this to yourself.

For example, I’m sure that you have received a web link that might look like this which may be underlined or it may be an image or a button.

I want you to click the following Yahoo link. Where does it take you? Yahoo right? That was not a deception. This is a normal link.
    Yahoo

OK, now, I want you to click the following link that says Yahoo. Where did it take you? It took you to this HotForWords site, right? That WAS a deception, but that does NOT mean it was evil.
    Yahoo

OK, are you with me so far? Thunderbird Scam filters look for rules of deception.

Now, I want YOU to send yourself an email from another account, preferably one that has a different domain. If your normal email is an AOL account, send yourself an email from GMAIL as an example or have a friend send you the following email.

In the email all I want you to do is to put in one deceptive link, with no words. But, in this case, I want you to make the deceptive link some phony URL such as the one that follows. I am using square brackets and spaces in the URL so it is not rendered. You will want to use the real HTML angle brackets and remove the spaces.

This is a deceptive URL, but does not mean it is evil. In real life, that numeric URL could be a real Yahoo URL.

    [a href="http : // 12.23.34.56/click.html"] Yahoo [/a]

The above link does not exist. Thunderbird does not care whether the link exists, it cares that it was a deception URL and so, that email with that single link and no words will be flagged as Scam.

That is just one rule of many which are used to identify an email as a Scam and has nothing to do with Spam.

Here is one of hundreds of web sites that talk about what a Scam or Phishing email is all about.
    http://www.microsoft.com/protect/fraud/phishing/symptoms.aspx

So, to address your concern about all of those other emails that you are getting and why they are getting flagged as scam is because inside the emails there are phrases and HTML codes that can be labeled as potential means for deception. It doesn’t mean that they are, it means that they could be. The Scam button that Flags your emails is an alert (Flag) and not a declaration of a scam.

Gelato, plural gelati, is Italy’s regional variant of ice cream. As such, gelato is made with some of the same ingredients as most other frozen dairy desserts. Milk, cream, various sugars, flavoring including fruit and nut purees and air are the main ingredients. Gelatin (spelt “gelatine” in Commonwealth countries, from the French gélatine) is a translucent, colorless, odorless, brittle, nearly tasteless solid substance, derived from the collagen inside animals’ skin and bones. It is commonly used as a gelling agent in food, pharmaceuticals, photography, and cosmetic manufacturing. Substances containing gelatin or functioning in a similar way are called gelatinous. Gelatin is an irreversibly hydrolyzed form of collagen, and is classified as a foodstuff, with E number E441. It is found in some “gummy” candies as well as other products such as marshmallows, gelatin dessert, and some low-fat yogurt. Some dietary or religious customs forbid the use of gelatin from certain animal sources, and medical issues may limit or prevent its consumption by certain people.

Mr. and Mrs. Somebody still go on dates. With all of everybody’s schedules, we have to plan a future date for any possible “romantic get togethers.”

    Hello my dear friend leonard,
I hope that you do not take offense at my critique of your comments.

    You said:
“I found the latest lesson in my spam also;”

If it is true that you found the HotForWords email in your spam folder, then what you said is accurate. However, the addition of the word “also” at the end is false and should not have been added.

The discussion with Rocky and me concerned the flagging of his and my email as SCAM which is something totally different than when an email is sent to the SPAM folder. I did not find my email in the SPAM folder and Rocky did not say that his was in the SPAM folder so your word “also” would not be accurate.

    Then you said:
“it said to reconfirm sending updates”

Are you sure it said “reconfirm”?
    The email that I received from HotForWords did not have that word anywhere in the email. In the email it said;
    “Please confirm your continued interest…”

The action that you may have been doing was a reconfirming, but that is not what it said in the email.

Sorry for being so anal about these small details, but as you know “the devil is in the details”.

You’re receiving this email because you signed up to the HotForWords website. Please confirm your continued interest in receiving emails from HotForWords.

    I thought that also….t h a n k s for your concern….DIDO-thank-you

well – its yiddish – but – then again – i like to point out how all languages are related – PUTZ – is slang for the male member – its something you PUT somewhere – and that is it’s core meaning – its why a PUCK sounds so much like F–K! a puck is something you shoot into a goal as well. and P and F are very close etymological relatives. It’s why FISHES are PISCES and FATHER is PADRE, etc.

HI kARL: “the devil is in the details”.
Are the details through?…Should I continue looking for “HotForWords” email in spam?… or forget about any email concerning HotForWords?

  • http://wired.reddit.com/sexygeeks_2008/?s=top pedanticKarl

    Hi Leonard,
Yes, you should look for any HotForWords emails in the spam folder, but you can automate that process by using your email filters and let them do the job for you. What email client are you using? I use Thunderbird which lets me designate any HotForWords email as a friend so it gets routed to a friends folder instead of the spam folder.

You should also understand the difference between a scam or phony web address versus the legitimate one. You know what the HotForWords address looks like above in the address bar and anything that looks suspicious you should proceed with caution.

In the late 99s’ I bought several Rebecca St. James CD’s though a christian CD club. I used to really like her voice in the late 90′s. she becamse like the living patron saint of sexual abstinance. I am not willingly celbate I really want a lady. There was a blond woman who looked and sounded like her on BLIND DATE. and she said all kinds of filthy sounding stuff about sex to her date on camera. It was funny becasue of what rebecca stood for sexual purity to teenage girls. I want a girlie and I feel exhausted from writing to girls on the internet and chatting on IM with some who got downright abusive towards me, some form nigeria an ghana some white some non-white. Network Europe pointed out that there are 10 million poor in europe too. I think they abused me because I could not send them money.
Olde Rebecca is a former Aussie!
