Honestly I only knew four by name.
Didn’t know there was a phobia for being afraid of being watched by a duck. Thought the last one was just a fear of ducks.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lSliucgygc&feature=channel_page&FMT=22 Capman911

I got about five right. Like Smokey I didn’t know there was a phobia for ducks watching you, now that’s funny. Well Marina you found out who stole your coat. Great video and poor Gorby gets tossed into the picture looked like it scared him. lol I copied down the phone number to see if it is yours. (JK)

Went through a whole year of zoology dissecting earthworms, cockroaches, and frogs (one lab a week) — but handling them with instruments and never touching them (bare-handed dissection — no gloves) — it was not fear, just disgust/yuckiness — didn’t want to “contaminate” myself by toughing them. For the final exam, had to dissect an earthworm, and at one point, touched it for a few seconds (forget what needed the touch). Surprisingly, as a kid long before that zoology class, I had freely touched live earthworms just to see them curl up into a spiral.

Is there a word for being squeamish about seeing your own interior? Eg, Squeamish about seeing your own X-Ray, photo of your retina, an MRI of youself, ultra-sound image of yourself, deep inside your throat. How about being squeamish about seeing the interior of a human body (observing a human dissection or a surgery)? Being squeamish about seeing an injury in another human — e.g, seeing an arm broken and dangling limply, seeing someone impaled etc.

I never knew the one with the D&G person was homophobia. That one just confused me. I was thinking it was some weird phobia of expensive brand-name labels. I guess it was hard to tell that you were portraying a stereotypical effeminate gay man. Also, not all gay men are into fashion (i’m not! … ok I watch American’s Next Top Model but that’s IT!) but whatevs… good video.

  • neuroway

Lots of people are afraid of their inner beast. They are concerned about how they will be perceived by others, afraid of being sincere and true to themselves, so they start acting, and let loose the bullshit. In other words, they are afraid of truth, hiding from it behind a facade of taboos and political correctness, sinking themselves in an ocean of lies, apparences and half truths. I wonder if there’s a word for this.

  • http://calling-muggins.blogspot.com/ muggins

Fail. I only got the first one correct. Arachnophobia. My phobia is snakes. Ophidiophobia. I felt I had merely a healthy fear of snakes until I was sent on the compass course at Fort Ord during basic training with another draftee, who was a recent immigrant from India. We were walking along trying to make sense of where we were, trudging through tall, dry weeds, when he burst out running. He figured there must have been snakes around, told me so, and I started running, too. That must have been a sight to see. I told him, you’d think that somebody from India would be used to snakes. I guess not. Another time, I awoke from a nap and stumbled into the kitchen to come face to face with a snake looking at me from an open drawer. That was kind of a shocker. Even though I was full of fear, my reaction was to find something to catch the snake with, and realized quickly that I don’t usually have anything vaguely close to snake catching equipment handy. By the time I got back with a long, thin dowel, the snake had slithered away. It’s not really that intense of a phobia, because I enjoy the outdoors TV shows with dudes looking for snakes. I was a little concerned when the fake story came out that a black mamba was loose in Palo Alto.

Hey pal pimp that site it’s in Danish. When I run my translator the article disappears.

I, of course, have a mild form of social phobia (or sociophobia), which is rather misnamed because concerns diffused anxiety in social situations, not a concrete fear, as in the specific phobias (so the new better name is ‘social anxiety disorder’ in the psychiatric classification DSM-IV).

I think the most bizarre phobia might be the phobophobia, i.e. a phobia of the state of being in phobia or anxiety (“the fear of fear”). It’s bizarre because anticipation of a phobia may generate the phobia itself, so it’s a system with a positive feedback (which is not so positive in the other meaning of the word ‘positive’) and may lead to an attack of panic.

Saying someone has a fear of this, and a phobia of that, seems to imply that someone must first be willing to believe that in order to be fearful one must have a belief in an invisible ownership or blind alliance with something that does not exist. I don’t like the psychology of that.

  • Greatest Potential

having a fear is like having a giggle to me

  • Greatest Potential

phobia isn’t even a word, it’s like a suffix, people should be suspicious of that.

  • seesixcm6

    Dear Marina,
I guess you were demonstrating philemaphobia, or fear of kissing. Obviously, you don’t have this fear. None of us here have Venustraphobia, either. (Fear of beautiful women.)
When I hear you scream in your videos, I suspect you are very loud. This means it would be hard for us to be quiet when we make out in a movie theater! Ligyrophobia is the fear of loud noises. I hope I find out if you make lots of noise or not!

  • neuroway

Phobia and fear are two different things. A phobia is irrational and a fear is perfectly rational. Facing a 1500 pounds grizzly and facing a 20 grams mouse are not the same thing, you know?

  • neuroway

Hollywood suffers from gerascophobia! That’s why it consumes such an astronomical quantity of silicon and botox!

  • neuroway

  • Greatest Potential

    Interesting take on that.

Now if you don’t mind I will drop to the ground, roll up into a ball, and play dead.

Fear of being watched by a duck… WTF, are you serious?

Unfortunately, for a heterosexual male, I think I have Gynephobia or Gynophobia. I don’t have a problem with women in general, one of my best friends is a woman (who has been in love with me for 22 years), but if they are attractive, and even worse if I have feelings for them, I freeze up. I blame this on my ex-wife, but I think I’ve had it forever. Although, it could be a fear of rejection, which I did not see a listing of, or fear of relationships, again I didn’t find a listing of.

Oh, I only got the first two right without looking them up.

But, honestly, I wouldn’t mind having the opportunity to fear you

Marina, the way you pronounced “cynophobia,” I thought you were talking about fear of Chinese. :o If the word for “dog” is the Greek κυνο, shouldn’t it be pronounced KEE-no-phobia? :???: Or is that the fear of motion pictures?

[Parody music] involves changing or recycling existing musical ideas or lyrics. Although the result is often very funny, and this is the usual intent, the term “parody” in musical terms has a slightly different meaning from the general term, as it includes some kinds of quite serious (or at least not intentionally humorous) re-use of music.

  • http://calling-muggins.blogspot.com/ muggins

Where is the “view all comments” option located on the page?

  • http://wired.reddit.com/sexygeeks_2008/?s=top pedanticKarl

    Hi muggins,
That “view all comments” link is on any YouTube video page just below the comments.

Take this HotForWords video on YouTube as an example.

Notice that there is about one screen full of comments shown below the video, assuming 1024x screen setting. To see more comments, one has to click “Show More Comments” Those comments are not threaded. The comments show up in serial as they are posted.

In order to see the threaded version, notice the link at the bottom of the comments that says “View All xxx comments” When you click that link, you will see threaded, paginated comments of 500 per page.

If you want to see HotForWords comments / replies, just do a page find using CTRL-F and then enter hotforwords. Of course you’ll see other people who use that term, but you will get to Marina’s replies and comments. If not on that page, then you’ll have to go to the next page.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhG8zC4npsE Venomrock67

I got four and a ‘partial’ correct out of eleven. I thought of the last one (the fear of being watched by a duck) because I remembered You did that one for a Nerd Word of the Day lesson. Wasn’t exactly sure about the spelling and pronunciation of it though. So it’s one, two, four and five for me.

Recently I’ve developed eosophobia, alliumphobia and staurophobia and on the last one the person has to have ‘faith’ for it to work on me which most people don’t
    have. ;-)

 It starts out with…. GOOD MAN IN A BAD TIME

Nah, all kidding aside I ‘d have to say I still have a touch of acrophobia.

I remember I had a very strange(?) phobia in my childhood (when I was 5-10 y.o.). I was afraid of many industrial constructions, especially these big chimney-like cooling towers in power plants, but also any constructions with a tangle of pipes or big ventilators.

    Now I like industrial landscapes.

IO.k. Did not know there were so many weird phobias out there, despite watching “Monk”. I suffer at times from acrophobia (which I now know the name for!) and not to often claustrophobia-I don’t tend to be in tight spots so I do not know how bad I have it
Speaking of the show Monk, there was one show where a monkey had a fear of Pelabophobia. That was cause a bald guy had killed his owner and locked him in a vault, so his fear was justified.
As far as fear of looking in the mirror, well, in the mornings that justifiable also

I suffer from caligynephobia, logophobia, and sophophobia, and man, am I ever sweatin’ bullets being HERE! Kidding. I’m largely fearless. The one I missed was eisoptrophobia; that one was new to me, but I could see having it as I’ve never been pleased with my reflection in a mirror.
Strangest phobia to me is barophobia – fear of gravity. I mean, unless you’ve ever A. Been in outer space B. Taken a hop in NASA’s fierce Vomit Comet, or C. flown with me or similar deranged pilot, what do you have to compare it to? We’d all be pretty much boned without gravity.

Teach, that was a great video. Downright lavish production. Love the game show concept. After I’ve consumed more coffee, I’ll try to think of some games. I could use the extra credit. xoxoxo, don

Thanks, pedanticKarl, that’s a thorough answer, which I appreciate.
I knew some of that information at uTube:
1] I knew about “View All xxx comments”
2] I’ve used CTRL-F to find my own comments in the list.

But I didn’t understand why sometimes the responses are correlated and sometimes they weren’t. Now that’s cleared up.
It’s good for me to know that because I’ve been critical of UTB
for it’s inconsistency, whichI know now isn’t inconsistent.

And I never heard of the word paginate, which roughly means organized on the page.

So, your answer expanded and tied some of what I knew together. My question stemmed from comment # 20.1.1.3 further on down this page. I thought that there might be a threaded version of comments here at Hotforwords website.

I was hitching rides in California long ago, going north to Santa Cruz. I got left off directly in front of a gynormous, coal-burning power plant. Big, ol’ huge building, with the roar of heavy machines and smoke stacks spewing smoke into an overcast sky. It was so close, it seemed to be leaning over me. There I was, small as an ant standing on the dirt, next to the cyclone fencing hoping for a ride. No place for a human to stand. A quarter century later, I was a construction worker helping to build a power plant. I was inside the beast, so to speak, in awe of the enormous project.

  • http://wired.reddit.com/sexygeeks_2008/?s=top pedanticKarl

    Hey Rijk,
I can’t reply to you, so I am replying to Marina.

My guess is that Marina is using the default Akismet spam filter.
My guess is that the reason that you are being caught in the filter again is not due to what you said about the lines etc, but that the filter was probably reset when Marina made changes to the comment system. Akismet does have false positives as I know that even happens to me on my own blog.

Here are statements from the WordPress – Akisment page:
    • “It might take two or three times”

    • “With updates to the database and major changes to the software, this process may have to be repeated.

The word repeated refers to having to un-spam you several times before Akismet learns again due to the recent changes.

    Rijk,
I answered your question about your comments going to moderation below Marina’s comment. I couldn’t reply to you, so I replied to Marina and my comment is right below yours.

The recent changes to the comment system resets Akisment, the spam plugin which means that it has to be trained again to not count you as spam. That can take several times to train you.

On my own blog, my comments get placed into moderation when I comment as a normal user as opposed to administrator. I never took the time to figure out why, but could have been due to my domain name?

  • Rijk

    thanks pk,

so the change of the comment system might be the cause of it?

i’ll just have to wait for it to be cleared, though i don’t like it.

    Hi Evan,
I don’t know how to do that with the current comment system.
The other day, Marina experimented with a new comment system that has a massive array of features. That system does allow you to subscribe to a person’s comments.

Marina will use that system once the bugs are fixed that will allow Marina to import the current users into the new system, so stay tuned.

    Hi muggins,
In simple terms, to paginate means to break up a single page into smaller pages. So, instead of have one page with 100 comments, there might be 10 pages with ten comments each.

Many months ago, Marina set pagination on this site to somewhere around 80 which mean that once there were 80 comments, then a new page would be started. Many of us don’t like comments being broken up into pages, and since Marina has expanded to more servers we get to see all of the comments on one page now.

I understand the frustration Rijk as I was frustrated on my own blog. How dare they flag me as a spammer. I own the damn blog. LOL

Just so that you know.. I DO NOT have any comment filtering system turned on. NOTHING. Not Aksimet.. not #links.. not word filtering.. NOTHING. It’s the sheer length of the comments you are posting that is triggering the moderation. I have no way to turn that off… for some reason it appears to be built into the core of WordPress. I have no idea what to do to stop it from happening!

I didn’t do to well on the test. 4 correct, and about 4 that I knew what they were but didn’t know the prefixes. My phobias would probably be apeirophobia and allodoxaphobia. I know one thing for sure I’m definitely not logophobic even though I have trouble spelling and with sentence structure.

Germi ! The problem is that modern Greek is completely different of ancient Greek but not only : The official modern Greek has two variants : 1 The Greek of the street full with foreign words + 2 The puristic Greek rejecting foreign words and using many ancient Greek words and roots.
Example : modern Greek NERO = water
    puristic Greek HYDOR = water
For many years the educated people thought that puristic Greek was the only one acceptable but today there is a kind of compromission.
As a comparaison imagine the following hypothetic situation :
    Modern English PEACE = peace
Puristic English FRITH = peace (because in old English the word was FRIÞ. Anglo-Saxon had two forgotten letters þ and ð wriiten today TH.

  • http://www.dictionaric.com dictionaricdotcom

    Kamil !

Merry means “full with mirth”. Mirth means JOY, FUN.
Happy means “full with HAP”. HAP is forgotten today but HAP means “destiny from the heaven”.

So, saying MERRY CHRISTMAS means “joyful Christmas” because it is a FEAST.

Saying HAPPY CHRISTMAS would be more religious because CHRISTMAS = GOOD HAP.

BUT !!! There was also BAD HAP in old Germanic polytheistic religion !!!

    Dear Ms. Orlova,

the history of the English word [world] could be interesting.
This is because it seems also to be a word of old germanic origin and in this word there could also be an indogermanic wero(= man) as there is in werewolf; for “world” translates into Nederlands “wereld”.

    Kind regards,

    pacioli
    (from Leipzig, Germany)

  • http://www.dictionaric.com dictionaricdotcom

    Germi !

You were speaking about spelling, right ?
You can have different spellings in Greek and even different words.
It was true 2000 and more years ago because there were many different greek variants, but it is still and more true today because Greece has been occupied by Turks during many centuries.
If you want to compare : Imagine the States completely cut from each others during many centuries. After a long time every state will have its own american. The situation in the USA would be similar to a kind of linguistic puzzle and it would be difficult for a guy from New York to understand a guy from Los Angeles or Dallas.
Languages are living beings and the evolve like such. That’s why on the earth there are so many different languages. And it’s great !

  • http://www.dictionaric.com dictionaricdotcom

    Pacioli !

I am not going to take the idea from You or from Marina but the concept of WORLD is interesting in every language :

In French and Latin MONDE and MUNDUS refers to the idea of ORDER and PURITY :

If I say MONDE IMMONDE in French it means “unclean world” :-) And I am not speaking about Slavic or Russian. I leave it for Marina although I guess that she does not want to make it too complicated and prefers to limit her explanations to English words.

Indeed WORLD is a good word.

The fear that you are being watched by a duck is a funny one as it was described by Far Side cartoonist Gary Larson in a newspaper comic released back in 1981.

Marina, you pronounced anatidaephobia correctly at 8:28, but the word in the video is missing the letter “a” after the “an” in the video text “antidaephobia”.

The word is spelled correctly in the Nerd word of the day:
    http://www.hotforwords.com/2009/08/30/nerd-word-of-the-day-anatidaephobia/

germi at comment number says: 49.1.1.1.1 below found a an entry in the “AntiWiki”, but that word is misspelled there also.

the Greek prefix “ana” would mean “back again”.

  • fglrx

The Greek prefix “anti” would mean against, where
the Greek prefix “ana” would mean “back again”.

I think the two prefixes are rather unrelated to the word anatidaephobia. Anatidae (literally: the duck-like) is the name of the taxonomic rank family, which ducks belong to. Anas (genetive: anatis) is a latin word for duck. So the word anatidaephobia is a Latin-Greek hybrid, like many names of phobias.

Yes, I’m aware of the linguistic differences in the world. As a Canadian I know there are many different spellings then in the States. Carlton (CAN) and I forget how you spell it and Capitol (US) and Capital (CAN), mom for North American, and mum for Aussie.

There is “terrible”, which makes sense if it comes from “terror”, but why does “terrific” mean something good?

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/CantwrCymreig Evan Owen

Comment est-ce que vous parlez le Breton?! :???:

Thank you for your facts about these words. I really enjoy comparing different languages and finding the similarities.

Leaving aside my jokes about the Welsh origins of “agora” and “bucolic”, I suspect that the similarities between these Welsh and Greek words are due to the common Indo-European roots of the two languages (evident also in word pairs like halos/halen “salt”, helios/haul “sun.”)

In principle, similarities in Welsh, Latin, and Greek exist for two reasons. Words for tangibles and actions that existed before the emergence of these three as distinct cultures probably all derive from a common source in Proto-Indoeuropean (PIE). But Welsh borrowed words directly from Latin and Greek for concepts or inventions of the latter two cultures. Thus “cleddyf” and “gladiolus” (“sword”) probably both derive from PIE, as swords preceded Celtic and Roman cultures; but the Welsh borrowed “pont” (“bridge”) from Latin, since the Romans were far superior to the early Britons at building bridges.

Contacts between Greeks and Britons (ancestors of both the Welsh and the Bretons) go back to the first millenium BC, when the Greeks sailed to Cornwall to trade for tin to use in bronze. Contact between the Romans and the Britons became very close with Caesar’s attempted invasion of Britain in 55 BC (when my ancestor Beli Mawr and his troops fought the Romans to a standstill on the shores of the Channel), and with the Roman conquest of Britain a century later.

OK, I have not given a direct answer to your questions but maybe the general principles help in figuring out the specifics.

We certainly can exchange information and ideas about Celtic and other languages. For example this question about AGOR and DIGOR is really interesting.
I am not from Breton descent but I know most of the vocabulary because of my hobby and profession (linguistics) and I try to discover new facts.
Although Breton has many brotherly features with Welsh it has been alterated by French through the centuries like Welsh but in a different way. Thanks God many roots are kept and I am deeply convinced that it is not utopic to rediscover the traces of the panceltic roots. Place names can be useful too.
Anyway it’s obvious that two brains is not too much for Indo-european researches. I can see that our fathers were much more interested in etymology than today. Today there is a kind of vacuum in this very important sphere of compared linguistics.
If you have any question about the origin of a word in Welsh or else, please ask ! I will be very happy to help you.

Leipzig means – as far as I know – lime (Brit.) resp. linden (Am.) in an obscur language of slavic origin, may be Sorbic. At least I was told so.

Ritalin is chemically very similar to cocaine, and likewise dumps the neurotransmitter dopamine into the nervous synapses. Of course, this ultimately depletes the brain’s store of dopamine.

A better idea is to take tyrosine supplements, the precursor of dopamine, and let the brain increase dopamine levels naturally.

It’s rather similar to amphetamine, but amphetamine rather increases release of dopamine and norepinephrine into the synaptic cleft, and methylphenidate binds to the transporters of dopamine and epinephrine and suppresses reutptake (and then decomposition) of this substances from the cleft, so it doesn’t depletes them so much. Tyrosine supplements may be useless, it the level of monoamines in the synaptic vesicles inside the presynaptic neuron is enough, but the substances are removed from the synaptic cleft too fast. Of course, too high level of dopamine may cause psychotic states. The most sane are the people with high production and high reuptake of monoamines (so-called “high monoamine turnover”).

Roaches don’t scare me. They’re just depressing. I found myself in Maui, late at night at some cafe in Lahaina, and we were closing that cafe because we got kicked out of our motel room and were going to sleep in the cane fields. There was one counter guy left to close the place, and he motioned us over to take a gander at something. We walked into the back room where they kept the food. He pointed to the 10 lb. bag of white rice. There was a dozen or so cockroaches skittering about on top of the white kernals. Still, I miss Hawaii.

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

How does poor spelling fit in with “intellegence?”

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

You mean “by the seat of your pants,” I am sure. It means flying by the physical sensations of the body (the bottom of which is in contact with the aircraft and its motions) vs. using instruments. Because the body can be fooled very easily in situations where there are no visual references—fog, clouds, etc.—it can be very dangerous. (John Kennedy, jr. died because of it.) In such conditions one must disregard these sensations and rely on instruments for attitude and navigation.

The next time you are in a swivel chair, have someone spin you around with your head bowed down. Then raise your head quickly and you will find out why the seat of your pants can lead you to disaster (no pun intended).

I was driving up Roseville Rd in Sacramento County, when I spied an FAA radar site on a triangular-shaped piece of land to the east. What was this? A sign, (which can be seen from Google Earth’s Street View) said “Camp Kohler.” I started an investigation that has lasted to this day. For example, last week I found the infamous Well 31 that was poisoned by the McClellan AFB laundry (now torn down) on the CK property and is now an addition to someone’s back yard.

Most people in Sacramento know nothing of its history. It’s amazing that an 800+ acres installation through which thousands passed is almost entirely gone (except for the 35 acres of the radar site).

La Cucaracha” (“The Cockroach”) is a traditional Spanish language folk song of the genre known as a corrido, that became popular in Mexico during the Mexican Revolution  1 When a fellow loves a maiden
And that maiden doesn’t love him,
It’s the same as when a bald man
Finds a comb upon the highway.

    Chorus:
    The cucaracha, the cucaracha,
    Doesn’t want to travel on
    Because she hasn’t,
    Oh no, she hasn’t
    [Marihuana for to smoke].

    2 All the maidens are of pure gold;
    All the married girls are silver;
All the widows are of copper,
    And old women merely tin.
We are not surprised that in the song of La Cucaracha (The Cockroach), there is a variety of theme. Sunny Spain heard the likes of some of the verses before they married a new tune in Mexico.

    A HotForWords Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas in the HotForWords house
Not a creature was stirring, not even Gorbys mouse.
The comments were all hung in their threads with great care
Hoping teachers reply, soon would be there.

The students were drowsy, all snug in their beds
While visions of first comment danced in their heads.
And Skip in his bed, and I in my cap,
had almost logged off for a long winters nap.

When out from my phone there arose such a clatter,
I sprang for my crackberry to see what was the matter.
Away to the Mac I flew like a flash, tore open the cover,
and hit refresh with a bash.

With the screen so bright, aglow in the dark,
Skip got scared and let out a bark.
When what on my computer screen did appear,
but a holiday message from Marina with cheer.

With a wonderful smile, so smart and so bright
I knew in a moment it had come from Marinas cool site.
More rapid than 3G, her helpers they came,
and she whispered and smiled and called them by name:

    “Now Capman! Now Jack!
    Now, James and Anud!
    On, Karl! On, ChaCha!
    On, BillyB and Bob!
From the decks of the yachts!
From the car in the stall!
    Now type away!
    Type away! Type away all!”

And then in a refresh, I heard on the street
the tipping and toeing of cute little feet.
As I focused my ears, listened and stopped,
through the front door, teacher appeared with a hop.

She was dressed in all white with glitter of blue,
I fell back off my seat, this couldn’t be true!
A bundle of books she had hung on her side.
Guarded by Gorby, along for the ride.

Her eyes so blue, how softly they twinkled
Her cheeks so high and not even a wrinkle.
The smile on her face drawn up like a bow.
And locks of blonde hair with a fabulous glow.
The stump of a pencil she held tight in her teeth
and her hair was styled in the shape of a wreath.
She had a cute smiling face and a flat little belly,
that tightened when she laughed unlike a bowl full of jelly.

She spoke not a word, but went straight to her Mac,
editing and uploaded, the lessons were stacked.
And in closing one eye to give a slight wink,
she turned with a blur and was gone in a blink.

She sprang to her car, to Gorby she whistled
and away they both flew, down the street like a missile.
But I heard her exclaim, as she drove through the night:

“MERRY CHRISTMAS DEAR STUDENTS AND VISIT MY SITE!!”

Thank You one and all….Hoyt Axton & Ringo Starr/ No, No, Song
…ps…You got any Dodge stories? :?:

A clip from Hoyt Axton’s” Boogie Woogie, Gospel,Rock and Roll Show”. Shown on tv in 1975. This was the end of the show and we all got on stage/camera to sing the “No, No Song”.
At the very end you can see Abe (5) on our friend Elijah’s shoulders and I’m dancing with Cathyaliza (3) in my arms.

    What a great time!

As described to me by my son’s Doctor. Ritalin speeds up the body to match the mind. Then they are both in sync and the person is at a level of being able to connect with the problems around them. In other words he is able to sit still and learn and his mind does not wonder and he is not anxious or hyper.

One of my all time favorite Weihnachtslieder ist,
“Es ist ein Ros entsprungen” from Leipzig.

Es ist ein Ros entsprungen. Thomanerchor Leipzig

I had no idea that the choir was this old.
The Thomanerchor is a choir featuring boy sopranos in Leipzig, Germany. The choir was founded in 1212.

 nest egg (plural nest eggs)

1.A natural or artificial egg placed in a bird’s nest, to encourage the bird to lay its own eggs there.
Patent No. 211,363 was issued on Jan. 14, 1879 to O. F. Woodward for a Nest-Egg: “My improvement relates to artificial eggs composed of a substance which is offensive to insects, the object being to render the same effective, not only as a nest-egg, but also as a destroyer of vermin.”
    2.(idiomatic) A savings; a reserve of money.
Over time, they accumulated a tidy nest egg and retired comfortably.

beevee B GoOd  As years pass, Santa evolves in popular culture into a large, heavyset person. One of the first artists to define Santa Claus’s modern image was Thomas Nast, an American cartoonist of the 19th century. In 1863, a picture of Santa illustrated by Nast appeared in Harper’s Weekly.

Thomas Nast immortalized Santa Claus with an illustration for the January 3, 1863 issue of Harper’s Weekly. The story that Santa Claus lives at the North Pole may also have been a Nast creation.

    @Venomrock67 re: cartoon

I’m sittin’ in the audience wanting to shout out at Porky Pig to put his pants on. It’d cut down on those shivers. I’ll bet I’m the only one that noticed Porky’s missing some vital anatomy. I’m so disgusted with myself for noticing that.

  • http://calling-muggins.blogspot.com/ muggins

Oh, I just looked up swarthy. I had it a bit wrong. I thought it was a gregarious, heavy drinking, promiscuous woman who wore low cut blouses, like you see in pirate movies. As it turns out, a woman could be antimiscuous, tea totaling, fully clothed and still be swarthy. Somewhat disappointing.

The coldest I ever experienced was -50 Celsius (-58 degree Fahrenheit).
At that temperature, with the first breathe you take, all the hairs in your nose freeze up and become brittle as glass rods. It’s a really weird feeling.

  • originalistrick

Amen. Thanks-that was a nice way to begin my Christmas morning.

You sent me off on a tangent listening to Stevie Ray. Maybe it’s corny to some, but man, I miss that guy. Here in Austin it was so neat watching his star rise as he overcame his demons. It’s so fun watching Marina’s ascension like that-God, please keep her safe as You watch over her…

SRV was great. Unfortunately I never got to see him live. I really found out who he was after he was killed in a plane crash back in 1990. Isn’t it funny how someone becomes more popular after their death. He is missed

Besides having really good original material, he did outstanding covers too.
