Hello, Dear Teacher: With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I would like to know why we have a bird called a [turkey] and a country called [Turkey]. Did someone name the bird after the country? Why?

Did you know that Ben Franklin wanted to make the turkey our national bird? Glad the founders didn’t go for it.

    Thank you, Dear Teacher!

    Your devoted student,

    • Evan Owen says:

Извините, “того в тюрьму” не понимаю. Что это?

      • fglrx says:

        “в тюрьму” = to prison
Maybe I committed a mistake, I learned some Russian, but many years ago. That was an old joke from a period of political thaw in Soviet Russia (I don’t remember which one, but not the ultimate one).

“All of us are liberals now, and who’s not a liberal – let him go to prison!”

  10. pedanticKarl says:

Wow, Did you see today’s quote.

“Being a sex symbol has to do with an attitude, not looks. Most men think it’s looks, most women know otherwise.” – Kathleen Turner (1986)

Marina knows the answer which is the
tag line, Intelligence Is Sexy as well
as attitude. Marina has the right
sexy and intelligent attitude. Love it!!!

    Thanks, Love your Videos,

  18. pedanticKarl says:

Marina, could you look into an issue that CampKohler reported?
He reported on two similar issues, posted over in the Forum.

Issue 1: I was able to verify this as CK stated.
    1. One is logged out of this site.
    2. Find a person to reply to, on any page.
    3. Click the Reply button which brings up the login page.
    4. After one is logged in, one is at the top of the page instead of at the original location of the Reply.

Note to self: To me this might be an indication that the cookies of the visitor (not logged in yet) are not integrated with the user’s cookies. It seems that the visitor’s cookies are lost?

Issue 2: I do not have the issue that CK reports
    1. One is logged in
    2. Find a person to reply to, or create a comment.
    3. Then, after the comment is submitted, edit the comment.
    4. After the edit is complete, CK is returned to the top of the page.

I do not have this issue. See my test below.

    Thanks

    • pedanticKarl says:

      P.S.
      I am using FireFox 3.5.5
I don’t know what browser CK is using.

    • HotForWords says:

I don’t know if it ever went back to the comment after logging in. A cursory glance shows that it might not be an easy fix.. but I will make it happen eventually!

      • pedanticKarl says:

        Thank you Marina.
In my first reply to CK I mentioned
that I didn’t recall that a logged in
user would inherit a visitor’s attributes.
I also think it is more complex to effect.

        • CampKohler - Sacramento CA says:

Point: If one who clicks Reply at a particular comment can’t be returned to the comment after signing on, then why have the reply after each comment?

          • pedanticKarl says:

CK, wow, that is exactly what I was thinking, but I forgot to elaborate on that the other day.

Specifically, if you remember, the current “REPLY Button” (CSS text based) used to be a standard “REPLY text link”, and if I remember correctly, that Reply Link did not show up until one was logged in. So, one solution is to make the Reply Button invisible when one is logged out.

  19. PageDoll says:

That was a nice appearance. I see hippie-boy weaseled a double cheeker in!

  20. Hs4Mm says:

Ever since I heard this Russian’s name (he’s now at Brown, but I have attended a few seminars he gave at Harvard), I have wondered about his last name [Goncharov] — both its roots and its meaning.

Also, those gatherings had a few Russians, and they all called each other [Sasha]. How come every Russian chap there was a Sasha???? Some one guessed “Sasha” was a form of Alexander and that they all had the same first name; someone else guessed “Sasha” meant “brother” — but no one really knew, and the Russians didn’t know English well enough to understand the question or to explain the issue.

PS: Some of you might want to do an images.google.com search (with safe search turned off) for Goncharov.

    =====================================
    ATTENTION ALL HotForWords fans!
    =====================================
Sometime between now and next month, I believe it is in the middle of Dec. or maybe earlier, Wired.com will most likely have their “Sexy Geek for 2009″ nomination go into effect. That is when you nominate the person to be the sexiest geek. Then, later in Dec, there is the final voting.

For those of you who read Wired magazine, post the information when you see it. I will be monitoring Wired as well.

In the meantime, did you know that you can still vote for “Sexy Geek of 2008″? Click on my gravatar icon on the left and it will take you to the voting site. Notice that Marina has 35061 votes. I just registered that last vote a few minutes ago, and it stuck. There had been a problem for a long time where my votes and others votes had not been registered.

Also, it is imperative that you click on the Down Vote of the person ahead of Marina. Look at Marina’s down votes. They have no qualms about down voting her, so you must respond in kind.

    Thank you all.

    • Hs4Mm says:

Isn’t there something about not nominating the same person multiple times because wired treats them as separate nominees and does not consolidate the votes into a single nominee?

      • pedanticKarl says:

        No, not true.
Wired DID consolidate “Marina Orlova” different nominations and other names.

The problem is when one uses different names.
For example; should one nominate HotForWords or Marina Orlova?
Those two names might possibly not be consolidated, and in most cases they were not consolidated. Multiple nominations for “Marina Orlova” will be consolidated, and they were.

Also, some people nominated Marina and just entered “Marina” or some other name, and those names were not consolidated.

It is imperative that we nominate one name. My recommendation is to nominate “Marina Orlova” as the voting is for a real person and not the personality. If everyone abides by that, then multiple submissions of “Marina Orlova” will be consolidated.

      • pedanticKarl says:

        Hs4Mm,
Here is a case in point regarding names.
Marina is beating herself in the 2007 Sexy Geek contest?
        http://reddit.wired.com/sexygeeks2007/?s=top

Notice that the leader for 2007
with 28127 votes is “Marina of HotForWords.com”

        The 2nd place winner
with 6679 votes is “Marina (HotForWords)”

So, you can see that by not staying with the same name, robbed Marina of 6679 votes.

    • pedanticKarl says:

Additional information regarding the upcoming Sexy Geek Contest.
      1. I recommend that the nomination be for: Marina Orlova
Do not add any other text or information or the potential for wasted votes will occur.

      2. For the photo, I recommend using the same photo as for the 2007 Sexy Geek contest.

If another photo is used, it should come from this site and not Wired.com. The reason Marina’s photo is not showing in the 2008 contest is because the Anonymous person chose a photo from the Wired.com server. When Wired cleaned up their server many months ago, that photo was deleted.

If Marina has a photo in mind that she wishes us to use, please let us know.

  22. CampKohler - Sacramento CA says:

Hey, what happened to the comment numbering system? I don’t see the numbers today.

  23. CampKohler - Sacramento CA says:

I have to disagree about liberals wanting to change the laws per se. They want to make them mean what they wish them to by changing their interpretation vs. keeping things as they are until they actually get changed. Conservatives on the other hand want laws to be strictly interpreted and any changes in meaning not be made unless the laws are actually changed first. (Whether the laws should be changed and what they should say in the first place is another matter these two sides will argue over, but that is a horse of a different collar.)

    • pedanticKarl says:

      Hi CK,
Marina answered another person on YouTube with a similar question. You can see the total comments here, and then do a page find for “RogerOnTheRight”

      Here is Marina’s answer:

RogerOnTheRight, I started with the original meaning of a free man, not a slave.. which is what it’s original meaning was. Because I was short on time, I took a shortcut and simply compared it to conservative.. meaning conservatives like to keep things the way they are and liberals don’t. But you are correct, there is more to liberal as well as conservative.. I was just short on time.

  24. jettfan says:

Oh, another one: How about the difference between “literal” and “figurative.” It seems the meanings are the opposite of what they represent.

  25. jettfan says:

I propose “sciolism” as a new word.

  26. Hs4Mm says:

The Title Block for the “Latest Video” Box is clickable, but the Title Block for the other Boxes are not clickable. How about:

    1) Clicking on “FORUM” takes one to the hfw/forums.

    2) Clicking on “UPCOMING EVENTS” takes one to hfw/calendar

    3) Clicking on “RECENT POSTS” takes one to hfw/site-index/

    4) Tricky one maybe … maybe not: Clicking on “RECENT COMMENTS” (or on the “There are <xyz> comments on this site!” banner) takes one to a page with a listing of all the comments from the past, say, 36 hours!

At 4:26 Marina touched by chance a hand of that guy on the left. The man obviously got excited, we saw him tapping his fingers on his knees. At 4:49 she touched him accidentaly again. At 4:51 the guy put his hand on her back for a few seconds and then he was bursting with excitement till the end of the vid. That looked like wasn’t done by accident.

Your [exuberance] is uncommon and very [alluring]. I see you as an excellent representative of the divine feminine and your rise in popularity is a clear indicator of the return of the Goddess. I would like to personally thank you andtell you not to let those mean people drag you down. I am sure you will be as lovely at 60 as you are now but your glowing personality tells me that your soul is eternal.

    • pedanticKarl says:

Good morning tuzon, and I welcome you to the HotForWords site. I was drawn to your kind words and particularly in your understanding of Marina’s spirit and essence. I think that is why many of us have been following Marina for many years as her [soul] is timeless and strikes a chord in each one of us. Enjoy exploring the site.

    • Evan Owen says:

      Welcome tuzon,

HFW fan club member Dezdkado helped me through the “Marina-is-goddess” phase about a year ago. Don’t worry, the infatuation will pass in time. What remains afterward is the cameraderie of your fellow word-lovers.

    Hey Marina,

I just want to say that’s a nice function that you’ve added on the recent comments section were you can go back further to check on other peoples comments.

    Thanks

    • pedanticKarl says:

      Thanks for noticing Venomrock67,
Yes, that is a great feature, clicking the “older” link and I hope other people will also notice it and take advantage of it to facilitate discussions. Don’t you just love it how Marina just makes this site better and better every day.

      • Venomrock67 says:

Yeah, she’s definitely made it a lot user friendly. As far as facilitating discussions on my part, I’m still a slow typer and it takes me a little bit to pound out a comment with my thoughts. I just put together these little masterpieces of jargon.

Hey thanks for the tip below, I sure do appreciate it.
You certainly do a lot for this site Karl
and like Marina you should be admired too.

        THANKS

    • pedanticKarl says:

Also Venomrock67, you may have noticed that the page has not been broken up into smaller pages, which means that you can scroll very quickly from top to bottom and review comments with one swipe of the mouse. You can also do a page find of key words by using CTRL-F. With FireFox, the incremental page search works great.

  36. Hs4Mm says:

[sacrum, as in the lower bones of the spine -- what is sacred about them? Did the Greeks think the "hieron osteon" played an important role in enabling sexual enjoyment and so considered these bones sacred (or "holy")? If so, is this structure common to other animals or specific to humans? I think Aristotle has said something about the buttocks and the erect nature of humans!]

    • Hs4Mm says:

      1) Result of searching for “buttocks” in Aristotle’s book On the parts of Animals: http://bit.ly/1OBhoF So he did consider the buttocks to play an essential role in the erect nature of man. So maybe the Greeks thought the sacrum as sacred/holy since they maybe would have thought that it too played an important role in keeping man erect. Some guy critiquing what was know about the sacrum as of his writing: http://vesalius.northwestern.edu/essays/authority.html

      2) I have forgotten the exact details about what you said about [clitoris], but recall you mentioning some guy who wrote about it. Was that reference to this passage SEC. II.– Of the secret Parts in Woman on this page http://www.exclassics.com/arist/arist6.htm written by a FAKE Aristotle http://www.exclassics.com/arist/arist1.htm ?

    • Evan Owen says:

[humerus], as in the bone of the arm — what is funny about it? Did the Greeks think this “οστεον κωμικός” played an important part in enabling comedy and thus considered this bone humerus? If so, is this laughing about banging one’s elbow unique to humans? Did I mention that “Owen” was originally a Greek name?

Here’s some humerus (oops — “uillean”) piping — at 10 minutes, maybe “Moher” than you want to watch, but don’t be “Furey”-ous with me.

(I’m taking free-association lessons from leonard.)

      • Hs4Mm says:

        Got the message. Thank you!

      • Hs4Mm says:

On second thoughts, scratch 39.2.1. The analogy does not apply: Humerus is not related to humor, but the sacrum is related to sacred — the Greeks themselves did call it the “holy bone”! So in asking why the Greeks considered the sacrum sacred/holy, there is no free association as in humerus–humor; the Greeks did call it holy!

        • Evan Owen says:

Oh. So you don’t like my sense of “humer”.

Americans, by the way, do refer to the humerus as the “funny bone,” especially the sensitive spot where it joins the elbow.

  37. Hs4Mm says:

[nudnik] Didn’t realize that the “-nik” suffix has a Russian origin despite having known of [Sputnik]! Interestingly, the origin of Sputnik has a “su” in it, with the “su” having the meaning of “with, together” (which can be tied to an earlier comment as with-the-rays-of-the-sun!).

  38. leonard says:

Hi HotForWords…I like your site daily quote

If nobody spoke unless he had something to say, the human race would very soon lose the use of speech.” – W. Somerset Maugham  Maugham’s love life was almost never smooth. He once confessed: “I have most loved people who cared little or nothing for me and when people have loved me I have been embarrassed… In order not to hurt their feelings, I have often acted a passion I did not feel.”

In June, 1917 he was asked by Sir William Wiseman, an officer of the British Secret Intelligence Service (later named MI6), to undertake a special mission in Russia[15] to keep the Provisional Government in power and Russia in the war by countering German pacifist propaganda….from wiki….William Somerset Maugham (pronounced ‘mawm’), CH (25 January 1874 – 16 December 1965) was an English playwright, novelist and short story writer

  39. seesixcm6 says:

    Dear Marina,
Nice of you to show your beautiful bare shoulders in this interview. I like to see your shoulders, and you did very wel in the interview.
“Happy Hour” is a time early in the evening when the bar sells drinks at reduced prices. This way, you can bring a girl to a bar and buy cheap drinks for her, Then, you tell her lots of jokes to make her laugh, and you laugh loudly at her statements (for example, about word origins), then you make sure she gets enough to drink (if she’s a smaller person, less booze is required), and then you make out with her, alot! I don’t do this any more, since I don’t drink very much, for health reasons.
    Seesixcm6

  40. tonyb says:

I would drink a couple of drinks with you, too.

  41. mudges says:

New “word” request. Not actually a word, but a phrase: [Tit for tat]

    Thanks!

  42. igor.kh says:

Word request: Don’t *** unless you mean it.

Common replacements for *** are “tell me you love me”, “kiss me”, and I’m sure that anyone could come up with many more. These kinds of expressions are quite common, but I wonder if they might have had a common ancestor in the not too distant linguistic past.

  43. Hs4Mm says:

Some post comments that play on words; here’s a variation of re-wording:

Consider the original lyrics for the enjoyable video Cups (You’re Gonna Miss Me) by Lulu and the Lampshades: http://bit.ly/48fRH9

    The lyrics have these lines:

You’re gonna miss me by my hair
    ~
    ~
    ~
You’re gonna miss me by my walk you’re gonna miss by my talk

But I think it would be wrong to deduce from “my hair”, “my walk”, “my talk” that the singer must be a girl. I think a girl in love with a man for his deeper characteristics can then/later get/feel sexed-up by his superficial characteristics such as “his hair”, “his walk”, and “his talk”.

But we do know that the author is indeed a girl. So treating this as a song to be sung by a girl, consider the lines:

I got my ticket for the long way round
The one with the prettiest views
Its got mountains its got rivers
Its got sites’ll (should be woods, whatever you like) give you shivers
But it sure would be prettier with you

    and re-word them as:

I got my ticket for the long way round
{I’m} the one with the prettiest views
{I’ve} got mountains {I’ve} got rivers
    {I’ve} got {sex that’ll} give you shivers
But it sure would be prettier with you

    Now, wouldn’t that be better?

    Regarding the line:

Two bottles of whiskey for the way

My interpretation is that the whiskey is in case her man does not join her (to be used as a mistaken tool for drowning her sorrow at unrequited love); if he did join her, neither she nor he would have any use for those bottles of whiskey.

    • Hs4Mm says:

PS: Perhaps “my hair”, “my walk”, and “my talk” are muted/subtle and so are a form of feminine assertion; but, in the rewording, her feminine “wares”/”attributes” are perhaps asserted too explicitly and so would be unfeminine? I don’t really know.

PPS: Here’s a tweet I sent about that video.

  44. rimbaud says:

Dear Marina, Is it ever polite to [hoc a loogie]? If you couldn’t help it, should you swallow it, spit in in your napkin, or hold it in your mouth and get out of there?

  45. Evan Owen says:

    Hi Marina,
How did you feel about that dude getting [cheeky] with you?

    • Bob says:

And was it he who smudged her lipstick?

      • Evan Owen says:

        Hi Bob,

@56.2.2.1.1 (ran out of reply levels)

I’ll have to reply with a “Croeso” since I don’t know the Gaelic for “You’re welcome” or “My pleasure.”

Just to let our fellow wordies in on the thread:

        Nobody but an imbecile
Mistakes Sweet William for Cross Bill:
And even I can scarcely claim,
The skill to make them look the same.
Some other shrubs and vines and trees,
        Express emotion much like these,
        you’ve seen the mad-wort plant I guess
        And weeping willows and sigh-press,
        The passion-flower, at its climax,
        The glad-iolus and the smile-ax.

Just to let you know, there was a hand-written note in the package from Megan, who packed it, saying that she used to live in Edzel and her mother worked in Aberdeen, so sending it gave her some happy memories.

  47. Venomrock67 says:

Marina, You looked really comfortable with the Happy Hour Team on that appearance. I’m not too familiar with that show but I think that the guy that was sitting next to you really likes you. ;-)

I don’t think individual investors should invest in stocks unless they follow the market. (That includes keeping an eye on a bunch of stocks, so that when it comes time to sell a stock, you have somewhere to invest. Also, there is a need for diversification, and maintaining a percentage of your portfolio in cash.) If you don’t put an hour a day studying stocks, then you should get out of stocks and buy mutual funds. But maybe Marina knows something we don’t about Google.

Marina, I applaud you for the DeisreeJ sub. In fact, I meant to tell you about her two weeks ago when I heard about her on the radio. I have my own personal horror stories to tell about myself, and many of my friends. Ten people around me have had the flu in the last month and I have not had the flu in the last six years. So far my recipe has worked and it has worked for other things as well.

By the way, from my experience, it’s not about the flu shot per se, but it seems it is about any shot (injection) or extraction. I have many friends that have become crippled in one way or another due to either one of these malpractices.

Buton wa buton ga buttonda. (The pig hit the pig.)

Neko ga, nekonda. (The cat is sleeping.)

Futon ga futtonda. (The bed flew away.)

Can you explain the following Japanese pun? :-

“Once upon a time there was a great Buddhist priest named Ikkyu, whose fame spread far and wide for his enlightened solutions to peoples’ problems. Finally, Ikkyu became so famous that words of his deeds reached the ears of the great Lord, who summoned Ikkyu to his mighty castle.

Upon learning of the summons, Ikkyu proceeded over hill and dale until at last he arrived at the main gates of the castle. In front of the gates was a river, with a bridge across it, and in front of the bridge was a sign which said:

BEWARE: Walking on the bridge is forbidden, by order of the Lord.

Ikkyu paused, thought for a moment, and then promptly walked across the bridge and through the gates. When Ikkyu came before the Lord, the Lord was astonished. “I have forbidden walking on the bridge!” he said, “How did you cross the river?”

“It was no problem,” Ikkyu replied. “I simply walked down the center of the bridge.”

      • Evan Owen says:

        Hi Bob,

Sankyou for the story about the bridge.

Sorry, I’ve only taken twelve hours of Japanese classes. Is there some similarity between the words for “forbidden” and “center”? I’m looking at “kinjiru” and “chuushin” but don’t see a connection. :???:

        • Bob says:

Apparently the word for bridge, “hashi,” is pronounced the same as the Japanese word for edge, which is also “hashi.” Thus by walking down the center of the bridge, Ikkyu obeyed the Lord’s command to “not walk on the edge.”
At least he didn’t have to wait i’ queue.

          • Evan Owen says:

Well, I didn’t have the IQ to figure out that one.

My daughter, the manga artist, has already started noticing the Japanese puns. One manga character named Ichigo (“Number One something-or-other”) has red hair, apparently a pun on ichigo which also means “strawberry.”

Hey, have we seen Hitoshi-san lately? I’ll bet he could add to our thread.

hi Bob san. thank you very much for your concern. my back is getting better. maybe I had been working too hard and long which caused me low back pain…. here in Japan as well, many companies went bankrupt or started restructuring because of the recession. and my company fired many employees the other day. but the amount of work is the same. so the left workers have to work a lot. the future of japanse economics doesn’t look good at the moment. I I know I have to feel delighted about still having things to do but I it gives me physical pain. how about your country?

    • hitoshi says:

hi my darling, Evan! are you guys trying to come up with Japanese puns? thats interesting, because there are plenty of puns in my language. for example….

kisha no kisha ga kisha de kisha sita. (a reporter of your company came back to your company by train)

uri uri ga uri uri ni kite uri uri nokoshi uri uri kaeru uri uri no koe (a seller of cucumbers came to sell them and he couldnt sell out of all them. you would hear his voice when he went back while trying to sell out)….. sad story…. :x

GOOG is a great first stock for you to own, since you’re on top of their performance and general business. It has real upside potential to about $590 and then will meet resistance. As busy as you are, you can’t be watching stocks like a trader. Just watch the volume of activity that GOOG has and see that it continues to have higher highs and higher lows as it continues to the resistance level.

A year ago, a friend introduced me to
    http://www.investools.com
    It and its trading platform,
    http://www.thinkorswim.com
    have been bought by Ameritrade

Now, my 85 yo stock broker calls me for advice, twice a week! Even though I could trade on Thinkor Swim (ToS)for a fraction of the cost of my old broker, as you know I’m loyal to people I started out with. On ToS I used Investools to buy BUCY options in March at $5 that are now $162 and headed for $500. This stuff does work if you’re careful and disciplined…duh, who ME?
    :-)

As you invest in anything, do it from the top down:
    1. Do I want to be in this market at all (be it stocks or real estate or gummy bears)?
    2. What sectors in the market are doing the best (railroads or commercial real estate in Glendale).
    3. Then, what companies in those sectors are doing the best?
    4. Then, you analyze the companies you like and make your final decision on what price to buy and when to sell. (Support and resistaqnce levels you learn from chart-watching)

Nothing goes up forever. Grass does not become trees.
Sell decisions are more important than anything.
If a stock goes down more than 15%, sell it. It’s better to have what’s left of your capital- than see the stock fall to 20% and stay there for weeks or months. You can always buy back into it a month later, as it may be rising. Men, especially, make the egotistical judgement to keep losers because they think they were right in the first place.

NEVER buy stock from the recommendation of another person.
If someone says GOOG is a hot stock, that’s nice. But check it out from the top down. Baidu (in the same sector) might be out-performing it because of strength in the Chinese market.
I don’t like BIDU. I have GOOG and will be selling it off as it gets to $590 because of rersistance.

Investools will teach you the skills to evaluate stocks, chart their progress and determine resistance levels on the top side and support levels on the bottom.

I see your shoe rack is in Salt Lake
:-) UPS might be a good stock…don’t know

That bar sequence was nicely scripted and well done!
You looked wonderful and very NY business ladylike

    • HotForWords says:

I bought Google at around 280 because I like the company especially since it seems to do well in a recession. I also like Apple and was going to buy it, but it doubled before I got any. Whoops!

      • wyo550 says:

        Hi!
I wrote all of the earlier posting, hoping it might also help the other fans.

I’m super impressed with Investools. The first thing they said at the first meeting was “What are your goals and how can we help you achieve them?” and there were all kinds of people there from experienced investors to little old ladies, desperate for help in managing what they had in their 70′s! I-tools is out of Draper, UT, near SLC.

You’re right about GOOG doing in a recession. I got postcards from them, as a small business owner, offering me $100 in free adwords just to try them out! That’s responding to the reality of the marketplace better than I would have imagined a “cyber” company to do! They’re also getting companies without web sites into their system! The day will come when you’ll be able to ask your Android telephone, ‘Where’s the nearest pizza shop” and GPS will point you to a small pizza place that isnt’ even on the web!

        In the past 26weeks:
        Goog is up 35%
Priceline(PCLN… I used to work with & know Jay Walker if you want a recommendation to work with them) is up 64%
        Baidu (BIDU) up 67%

        In the past 18 weeks:
PCLN +56%, BIDU 41% and GOOG 34% (I only hold GOOG)

The sector for all three companies, “computer services” is now attracting institutional money (which drives the stock market in the US).
        September 47-of-100, October 64, November 83
That 100 point scale simply tells you whether money is coming in or going out of a sector, as institutional money comes and goes.

I didn’t buy back into GOOG (at 521) until the October “64″ (above) showed that the sector was going upwards and GOOG was doing well. I sold the 521 at 562, then bought back into the position and now am shooting for sell-buys in the 580–560 range, all while holding my first GOOG buy at 591 (in 2007) as dead money. I can’t wait for GOOG to hit THAT resistance level!

Your statement about GOOG doing well in a recession is probably best applied to PCLN, as people try to save money. BIDU’s recovery is due to the more rapidly-recovering Chinese economy- than GOOG, which seems to be trending up because of optimism about all kinds of advertising.

Good buy at 280, girl! I was sweating with GOOG shares I bought years ago at 591 while you were buying! My ego and lack of knowledge as things tanked (in early 2008) kept me from selling on the way down (past my 15% cost) and you can see for yourself how long I’ve been sitting on dead money waiting for it to come back.

You can see how volatile GOOG shares are. Like any stock in a positive climb… it goes up, pulls back, settles and then goes up again. You can practice making money like a mini-trader by looking at a chart of the activity and seeing (as I did a couple weeks ago with GOOG) a chance to sell, hold your breath, and then re-purchase when it dropped 15-20 points.

The happy thing for you is that it will never go back to your 280 cost. You’ve already doubled your money! Now, you can put a “Good Till Canceled” sell order for the next higher price peak you think it will have, before resistance beats it back down (right now, the chart shows that GOOG is meeting resistance around 560.

The conservative approach might be to GTC sell at 559 and buy back at 550. The more gutsy approach would be to let it exceed its resistance level, then GTC a sell order at 562-565 and then smile as the professional institutions punish the amateurs… as they sell it back down to a buy point like 550..from where it will come back.

The danger with the sector now is that there is currently a HUGE increase in volume coming into the sector. That’s institutional money. As soon as those guys have made their good, incremental profit (and sell at what they consider the resistance level), the volume may stall or even decline…and the stock will be very vulnerable to bad news of any kind.

If you see both a lower trading volume of GOOG and perhaps bad news affecting retailers and advertisers, put a “Stop Limit” on your shares, so you don’t have to lose sleep like a trader but will be protected if the shares suddenly react to “bad news.” Because that’s what the pros will be doing and all the current volume of buys will turn into a flood of sells.

GOOG might well get to 590 by X-mas. But IF it does that on lower volume it’s a trap for amateurs (with no volume to hold it up). On bad news, with no volume support, the stock could drop to 565 (which will then be the new lower support level, just as 560 is currently the upwards resistance level).

When you see GOOG hitting resistance at 590, I’d recommend you put a STOP LIMIT order to sell at 575, just in case it falls on its ass…then you’re out and can buy back in wherever price it levels off at… maybe at 567…and then go for another ride if it still seems to be doing well. Maybe it will get beat up from 590 and loiter around 560 for six months.

Good luck to you and anyone else on the markets!
I hope my introduction to Investools was beneficial.
