Nerd Words of the Day: Imma Let You Finish

imma-let-you-finish“Imma let you finish”: Phrase used to interrupt someone with no intent of letting them finish what they were going to say.

This phrase entered the lexicon recently with the MTV Music Awards and Kanye uttering the phrase as he interrupted Taylor Swift during her acceptance speech.

I had to do this phrase after Bo Burnham uttered the following statement on his Twitter tonight: @boburnham “balloon boy, imma let you finish, but the gosselin kids had two of the worst parents of all time!”

Wow! This seems like a low number of comments. Maybe we’re to afraid to address what used to be called Black English when I was young. Maybe now it’s called rap speak or something like that. Slang definitely has a place in word origin but as we also learned it can take many years for that word to be accepted. Just because a pop star mumbles a rude comment does not justify its acceptance as a “real” word. I would never demand Kanye talk a certain way but in the spotlight he proved himself.

 hip hop expression is one thing but hip hop hypocricy :?: let the grrl speak :!: Taylor Swift was expressing and got a ‘girl interupted’ from Kayne.
What was it he proved again

    oh, you got it

    typo correction: interrupted, Kanye.

  • pat haskett

To me he “proved” he had poor communication skills and manners. I’m taking it for granted that “imma” is short for “I’m gonna” which is short for the proper “I am going to let you finish”. If he had no intention of letting her finish then I guess he’s just rude and the slang fits him well. Spell Check doesn’t acknowledge “imma” either!

“Rap speak” as you call it is called “Ebonics”. I’d know…I’m black.
