But seriously, a few comments on the site & redesign:

I’ve greatly enjoyed the site as-is; have always been able to find my way to whatever I was looking for (though occasionally had to hunt.)

My cousin did comment on “visual noise.” I have to wonder if that is inevitable, given how much there is to see on this site.

The ominous “black space” to the right of the comments is an aesthetic consideration in re-design. But with luck, it will fill up with high-paying advertisers who will increasingly reward Marina for all the wonderful free [infotainment] {hey — have you done that as a nerd-word yet? I’ll have to check} that she’s been giving us for the past two years. :grin:

Saw the magnet demo. Three things immediately jumped out to me. Consider the following:

1) Is the main offering Lessons or are Lessons, ShoutOuts, Press etc. all on equal footing? A home page that lists all posts reverse-chronologically says that all categories have the same priority.

2) A key feature of previous design was availability of the five most recent posts at a single click: a list exposed all five items to a single click. Magnet has “Featured Articles” box which requires multiple clicks to browse; I do see the “jump to page” circles — but one would be jumping blindly.

3) I suspect the 4 boxes at the very top will be a good improvement over corresponding boxes in previous design. Magnet’s scheme of boxes at the avoids clutter, and — more importantly — clearly indicates their special nature: the stuff in the boxes represent a special collection (“play list”) or a special, sitckey, timely post (e.g., book promo or win a date promo) and they have lower (or special or limited or temporary) priority compared to the regular posts.

PS: While making this comment, found that while up and down arrows work within the text entry box, the left and right arrows do not. I am using on Windows XP Pro but using FireFox 3.5.3.

A common reaction to any change is to resist it — but I do not feel that way at all toward this redesign; I am actually eagerly looking forward to the finished product!

What do you mean? It currently shows about 100+ comments per page.. I had to limit it as some posts have 1000+ comments.

I wish I had the resources to be able to build it out while it was not live! But what can you do?

See, it would help if there was a playlist because then the videos would all string together one after another and play through til the end. Since each video is limited to around 10 minutes in length and there are many segments it seems like gobbledygook. It would have been helpful to create a playlist for that and it would have kept from making us look stupid too.

Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov is a Russian Opera in Four-Acts.

Act I. Six Years Later
In his cell, an old monk, Pimen, is finishing his chronicle of Russian history. His novice Grigori, learns the rumor of the murdered Dmitri and conceives the idea of seeking power as a pretender. In Scene II, at an inn near the Lithuanian border, Gregori enters with two vagabond monks who have escaped from the monastery with him. Shortly, a policeman appears, searching for a runaway whose description matches that of Gregori. He rushes from the room able to escape.

Act II. The Tsar’s Apartments in the Kremlin
Things are not going well in Russia and everyone blames the Tsar, who is also tortured with with guilt over the murder of Dimitri. Prince Shuisky, a rival boyar, brings the news about a pretender claiming to be Dimitri, who thinks he is the resurrected tsarevich. The guilt of Boris turns into hallucinations and madness.

Act III. A Castle in Poland
Princess Marina, the daughter of a Polish noble has fallen in love with Dimitri the pretender. Her Jesuit confessor Rangoni hopes Russia can be converted to Catholicism and under Rome’s dominion. He tells Marina to charm Dimitri. In a garden before the Polish castle of Mniszech, meeting with Dimitri, Marina urges him to attack Moscow.

Act IV. An Emergency Meeting of the Boyars Council in Session
The Russian nobles are discussing the false Dimitri’s revolt. Prince Shuisky relates how he saw Boris hallucinating about the dead Tsarevich. Boris enters, protesting his innocence, but upon hearing the story of a miraculous healing of a blind shepherd at the grave of the murdered Tsarevich, he collapses. As the bells toll, Boris falls dying, begging God for mercy. Shuisky and the other nobles place Boris’s young son, Fyodor, on the throne.

In the Kromy Forest, peasants attack a nobleman and two Jesuit priests. Gregori, the false Dimitri, passes by with his army, headed for Moscow. A simpleton, the only one left on the stage, sings a lament of Russia’s troubled times.

I was serious looking for what some people call the “Love Music” in Mussorgsky’s Opera “Boris Godunov” I found the entire opera broken up into 37 videos here I know nothing about music, and would not recognize the “Love Music” if it came on and broke my ear drums.

But I found something the channel RADAMES1983 titled the “Fountain Scene” I am not a 100% sure but this might be the scene with the “Love Music”. And at about 1:16 into this scene, we have the words:

The reason I was looking for that music was because I found out it was one of Ayn Rand’s favorite pieces and was curious to hear it. I never knew this Opera had a character called Marina! (I now know that the character is Marina Mnishek, played by Irina Arkhipova.)

And so this is the third coincidence in recent times! The first was you finding the poem with the title “Hot For Words” in which the poet had a sketch that somewhat resembled you; then you found that painting of a woman with exposed tits whose figure somewhat resembles you. And now I run into this love scene involving Marina!

I just finished reading the subtitles of the first part of the Fountain Scene. That Marina seems to be a horrible woman! If this is the “Love Music” that Ayn Rand liked, it must have been only the music, not the words. That woman is just a power-luster, too evil to contemplate! Maybe the second part will show that she said those things as a way of testing his love; but even then I might still think she is horrible to have tortured him so — unless she then gives him the right to use her as he pleases for his own pleasure! Let me know find out what happens in the second part.

The order of these comments confuses me…

Marina, I really like the new look of the site.
I have one or two points you might like to consider about the design of the “Home” page.
All the tutorials I’ve read about designing a sales letter or a web page have emphasised the importance of putting as many important points “above the fold”.
What this refers to is the part of the letter that is seen when it is taken out of the envelope, without having to unfold it to read the rest, and the equivalent on a web page is the initial view of the landing page seen without having to scroll down.
This is the part of the letter or web page where you have to grab the readers attention and persuade them to read further, before they throw it in the trash bin or click away to another site.
here is a screenshot of the initial view I see of the home page.
Notice that not much of the site is seen on this initial view; only the header of the “Latest Lessons” panel is showing, and you have to scroll down past advertisements before you get to “Recent Comments” then “Recent Posts”, “Recent Popular Posts”, “Upcoming Events”, Twitpics” and “Forum Posts”.
Would it be a good idea to move some of these hidden elements up to the same level as the “Latest Lessons”, immediately below the menu bar, and move the wide “Posts” column down beneath them?
Some space “above the fold” could be saved by making the top elements take up less room; the Masthead and menu bars take up more than a third of the initial view, and there is a band of blank space above and below the four picture links at the top which could be compressed or eliminated.
I hope this is helpful and doesn’t throw a spanner into your excellent works.

Thanks! I could only play one sample, and it seems to include voice — I could hear a man’s voice start to sing and the sample ended before the voice sang anything significant. I was hoping there would be one without any voice; if I look harder, will I find one or do people not make voiceless opera music? I’ll also try contacting that store.

I will take your words into consideration.. but I work off of templates and can only customize them so much. My previous site had all kinds of stuff above the line and it was impossible to figure out where the new posts were. I decided to go with the typical blog format where the latest post is the thing you see initially. I also included 4 boxes at the top for important stuff. I know that the site looks less busy than before, but I am hoping it will make for a richer experience for the user.

I hope it works out – only time will tell; I’m not able to judge since I know where everything is anyway.
The new users would be the ones to ask about their experiences with the site.

The missing link is the link to the alphabetical press page which is:

Hey Rijk, the TAs don’t have any editing powers least none that I know of. Maybe Jack might have some but the rest of us just help out on the site and help Marina when she needs some help with looking up words or getting up a list for her when she is real busy. We also kinda police the site for trolls. If we need real help we email Marina about a problem and she handles the issue. The is in answer to your comment to Buzz.

Also, there used to be “Blog” which was all posts in all categories — could not find this.

Perhaps, we need “All Words” with drop down to Alphabetical, Video and Random; and a “Blog” with drop down to Alphabetical and Video.

Many links in the footer are missing the “…/category/…”

Sometime listen to a little of Mussorgsky’s “Pictures At An Exhibition” (I don’t know if you’d want to sit through all of it), and then follow that up with Emerson, Lake, and Palmer’s take on it. Incredible!

Guys and gals.. I had to revert back to this design.. the other one really couldn’t handle all of the information I had.. plus it really downplayed everything I have done so far. BUT.. I will be borrowing design elements from that other design.. as there were things I really liked about it.. such as the comments.. they were easy to read.. the fonts were great as well. So keep an eye out.. you will see those elements coming to here. Plus I need to design a way that is easier for people to find my new posts as I make them. If you can think of something.. let me know.

Ugh… Push some comments par-ci par-là, Capman, see where they end up and try to grasp the power of the logic behind it. Don’t push it too far too fast though, cuz you may get disoriented by your own loquacity in the long term. What kind of cage do you have? I know it can be frustrating to run on an underpowered machine, cuz the quantity of adds which you don’t give a damn about may bring the CPU to its knees, so this may be the reason why we’re back on the road again on the old version, haha.

To solve something, starting by being explicit about what the issue is helps … from the remarks you have made, I gather the issues you want to address are:

1) When people see the home page, they need to easily get the correct idea of all that this site has to offer. I would like to add that while it needs to be easy, it need to be “fast”/”at a glance”: what they would need to know at a glance is how to systematically start processing the stuff they are seeing on the home page to understand what the site has to offer — they need not get the content of the home page very quickly, but they need to get the method for processing the home page very quickly.

2) When they visit an interior page that is open to accepting comments, they need to know quickly and easily: that the page accepts comments, how to go about commenting, how rich are the comments (i.e., how many comments, how many threads) and how to go about accessingg all the comments.

3) When your game comes out … I have no idea what the game is, whether it is something people would be able to plan on this site, whether it needs to be integrated to the site etc.

And I think that it is important for you to state explicitly to yourself the purpose of the site, if you haven’t already done so. How you choose to communicate that purpose to the visitor comes after knowing that purpose.

State the issue in general terms being very exact in the terminology, think hard about it and how to solve it. Then, when you least expect it, your mind will feed you a solution.

Here’s something to think about regarding your remark “I need to design a way that is easier for people to find my new posts as I make them.”: On the home page, suppose you just took the “recent posts” box and made it huge and/or otherwise jazzed it so people would not miss seeing it — why would this not be a proper solution? I do not think that would be a good solution, but if you state to yourself why that is a bad solution you might see what it lacks and, more importantly, you might come up with a different statement that “easier for people to find my new posts as I make them.”

That’s my 2 cents!

I’ll keep that in mind. The issue is that I do not listen to music — music is not a form of enjoyment for me. But I see other people saying they enjoy music and that makes me very curious to know what it feels like to enjoy music! Different people enjoy different music; so it might just be that I have not found the type of music that would result in enjoyment for me!

PS: not sure if this is applicable to you, but do not be in a hurry to start coding. Think through what you want to achieve first. (There are engineers who rush to start coding, and they do not produce good code.)

Hs4Mm suggested making the recent posts box HUGE. I notice that you have quite large margins outside the frame. Can they be shrunk and the size of the boxes inside the frame correspondingly enlarged? Also, people usually read from left to right, so maybe putting the recent posts box at the top left above the latest lesson picture would make it easier for newcomers.

It feels exactly like enjoying something you like, no matter the hardware it goes through to make its way inside of you (eyes, ears, nose, mouth, or a simple adrenalin rush coming from nowhere, out of the blue). Music is no different than anything else a sensitive organism can appreciate. One day, you’ll find the exact frequency you need to make your senses vibrate with enjoyment. Unless you have some real problems with your eustachian tubes and you are some kind of stupid barking dog, totally unsensitive to music, or a monkey in front of the Mona Lisa.

Hi. When you say ‘find new posts’ I assume you mean when you comment rather than posting a Lesson or putting up a new page?

If so – isn’t there a way to have 2 ‘Recent Comments’ boxes – the current one that shows everybody – and another one next to it that shows ‘Marina’s recent comments’? Doesn’t seem it should be that difficult unless there is no widget that allows a search for just you…

I also liked the stuff you mentioned from the other design – fonts – comments easy to read – had a ‘cleaner’ look…

Liked the top feature box too – drew attn to what you want people to see.

Also liked the left/right scroll on recent lessons box – beats just showing 1 latest and the list of last 5 as now.

If there is one new thing I’d suggest it would be this:

For a newbe coming to the site, I think a box of a ‘Top Ten’ lessons or something to ‘get to know you’ – feature your best and most popular work – would be really helpful. They can get ‘hooked’ by seeing your best work first – and then explore the rest of the site.

I’ll emphasize this because you are expending a HUGE amount of effort to get a new person to check you out with all the Press, PR, and Book Promotion — and when they take the time to actually do so you want to make it EASY to see you at your best – and keep them coming back. All the rest follows from that – sponsors, ad revenue, other opportunities, etc.

I’d put this MOST PROMINENT on the Home Page and on the side at the top.

Then the recent lessons, recent comments, and so on. Those of us who come here regularly can see all the detail we crave down the side column, which can go as deep as you want it to.

I think that’s more than 2 cents – keep the change… ;-) :grin:

here’s an obscure movie. it’s not educational or anything. in my opinion, one of the worst movies ever made.
i watched it because it’s got sasha grey in it. i was curious how putting a porn actress in a non-adult movie would work out. she also starrs in a movie directed by steven soderbergh which i haven’t seen yet, “the girlfriend experience” which is a big hollywood production.
there are of course (former) porn actresses who made it in “regular” movies and the music business, e.g. traci lords who has a rather unique story.

Its not really a redesigning, its more a different layout. Asked about the concept for the new site, but no answer.
Concept could have been school, book, newspaper. Or a phrase. Concepts guide you in every design decision that has to be made.

For instance newspaper has a certain look and feel to it, even the way a new page would role in your screen.
So to me its not a design, its an idea.

Well on the top left (where the text-bar used to obstruct the ad) of the homepage there is the ad for your book / neuro Bliss and Neuro Sonic, and there used to be one with neuro gasm as well. And that one is gone.

Hhmmm, isn’t it strange it shows up one ad, but not the other. Both firefox and internet explorer don’t show this ad. Even with all blocking switched off and all cookies excepted.
