Nerd Word of the Day: Anatidaephobia
Anatidaephobia: (n) The fear that you are being watched by a duck. From the Greek word “anatidae”, meaning ducks, geese or swans and “phobos” meaning fear.
What a strange phobia, seriously! But that reminds me of something that just happened to me.
I was standing by my bed, petrified, due to my clinophobia* when suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, I thought I saw something move! Or was it just my katsaridaphobia* acting up? I mean, I’m isolophobic*, but I’m destined to be alone especially after that disastrous dinner date last week, I’m sure!
My date was just trying to start a conversation when we sat down, but the moment his mouth opened, I screamed at the top of my lungs! I hadn’t told him about my deipnophobia*! Before that date, I was stranded in my own little apartment due to my bathmophobia* and my otisphobia* (I made that one up) but my date helped me leave. But now I’m back and I can’t even order Chinese food for delivery since my consecotaleophobia* won’t let me! But, all of that is beside the point… I’m sure there is a man out there somewhere who will save me some day, just as long as he’s fine with my genophobia* and my anatidaephobia. :-)
Speaking of phobias, I was going to compile a …. oh.. I can’t say it.. my pinaciphobia* won’t let me… just click here, darn it!
*clinophobia - fear of going to bed.
*katsaridaphobia- fear of cockroaches.

*otisphobia – fear of Otis elevators (Am I the only person who has this fear?)

I’m a bit late getting to this word, but when I clicked on the link that led to the Phobia List and looked at it i noticed there wasn’t a phobia beginning with the letter “q”. May I suggest [quasimodophobia] might mean fear of hunchbacks?
[sciurophobia] ;-)
VenetianPrincess talks about her
fear of flying A friend of mine has that. She’s been strip searched at airport security and that’s made it worse for her to deal with going to the airport, let alone getting on a plane. She still travels by plane though, but she’s told me last time she was planning a trip that it would be her last and that I wouldn’t be hearing from her again because she had a dream where she went down in a firey plane crash That was over a year ago and she lived and nothing even remotely happened to her on her trip. Sometimes her talk freaks me out.
Here’s a nerd situation in need to a good word:
The act of going through a menu and clicking on the wrong menu item.
I suppose that thus could happen with any GUI control, but it seems almost exclusively the domain of menus.
Perhaps the word should be:
mismenu ?
mismenuize ?
It could be a serious thing as a rename could become delete (or cut instead of copy), and if the user would accidentally hit OK, that’s all she wrote (although I suppose he could go the Recycle Bin or Clipboard.)
That pushy attempt by Dr. Michael A Healy to scare me into submission in his office for a brain cyst operation and thinking he has me threatened on my street and some strangers making scary remarks at the store, make me think I am being followed by a mean old duck. What was the criteria the PhD psychologists told me YOU MUST BE A DANGER TO YOURSELF OR A DANGER TO OTHERS. FOR THEM TO COMMIT YOU!! Maybe Dr. Healy is with the CIA? A MD at an outpatient clinic at MSU also tried to get controlling with me in 1985 about my Tranxene perscription. So I just quit him and went “cold turkey” without the stuff.
If anatidae means ducks and phobia means fear of, where is the “being looked at” part? Without the third part, it could just as easily mean fear of being overheard by ducks, fear of having one’s socks darned by ducks or anything else. Otherwise the first person to define the term sets it in stone and no further uses involving ducks can be made, which doesn’t make sense to me.
Love conquers all…
Gary “Far Side” Larson coined this word for one of his comic strips. I still get a laugh from reading them.
Yes indeedy and absolutely!
I have his book The History of the Farside lurking on my bookshelf even as I type. I was going to pipe up with the same information. So well done to you, and I’m way too slow.
I love Gary Larson’s humour, and also that of Max Cannon at redmeat.com

Is there a fear of using public restrooms? I have met ppl like that.
It’s not a germaphobe.
I can’t stand using public restrooms

Usually an aphorism is a concise statement containing a subjective truth or observation cleverly and pithily written. Aphorisms can be both prosaic or poetic, sometimes they have repeated words or phrases, and sometimes they have two parts that are of the same grammatical structure. Some examples include:
   You can play a shoestring if you’re sincere. — John Coltrane
The aphorism is considered a compressed poetic genre in itself. Aphorisms typically make extensive use of such devices as alliteration, anaphora and rhyme.
Good Art seems ancient to its contemporaries, and modern – to their descendants. — Plutarch
Yes Captain Jack I suspect your right it is Phallophobia! I wonder how many women have this fear ? Marina ? I don’t think she has it, but I suspect there are more women out there who do have it ? Let’s take a Poll [Pole] ?
Sincerely hoping how many women have Phallophobia ? Will respond?
Prince John
I would think a bad experience such as rape, would cause someone to have phallophobia.
Oh boy, I’m having a lot of fun reading this http://www.phobialist.com that Marina posted. Some of them are real funny gut busters.   I think I need another drink of water or a change of underwear!
Marina, what does [screaming at the top of your lungs] come from/mean? Your vocal cords are not part of the lungs, right? What would it sound like if you screamed at the bottom of your lungs? I do know you have a healthy set of lungs from listening to your screams from your past videos. Maybe someday you will show us what a healthy set of lungs looks like.
I looked up genophobia thinking this was a bunch of BS. Genophobia (which is also called coitophobia – an abnormal fear of sexual intercourse.) was a real word. Then I remembered that I knew someone that had this fear. At the time I didn’t know there was a name for it. I even helped this woman get over her fear. She also suffered from PTSD which also fed the fear. Two years later we ran into each other and she pulled me aside from the crowd and thanked me for the help. She now is remarried and has two daughters and is no longer taking her medication for PTSD.
So I looked up deipnophobia. That’s an odd one. I wonder what would bring up that fear. Maybe from that one part in the movie in “Hannibal (2001)” where Hannibal Lecter was serving that guy’s brain for dinner. After something like that, I would understand why someone would have that fear.
I like ‘otisphobia’! When I worked in the Columbia tower (tallest building in Seattle, which houses Amazon.com (well they are moving to 3 new buildings in Seattle) and Ron Sims (Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development – Is also my twitter pal.) I had access to the Otis elevator rooms. What amazing machines those are. I have to say I was a bit nervous about using the freight elevator. It would have all kind of issues. It was the only elevator that traveled the whole hight of the building. My ears would pop from the pressure changes of running up and down 74 floors. The darn thing would shake as you go up and down in it. It was a large metal room that could fit a Mini in it.
I think the only fear I have is ‘Acrophobia’. I don’t think I will ever get over it. Not for the fact that I nearly deal with it daily when I go for a walk over the Ballard bridge. There’s a part where the steps going down from the bridge is made up of thin strips of metal. It scares the heck out of me. Also if there is anyone around me, there is no way I’ll ascend or descend the steps with someone near me.
I will conclude that it’s a good thing I don’t have Russophobia or Verbophobia.
*Oh, worst yet for a Captain to have is Thalassophobia- Fear of the sea.
Why do people think it’s important [to get all their ducks in a row] when carrying out an important task? :?:
Hey! In the second menu row, you want “log out” to the right of “Dashboard”; and you want the top horizontal ad to abut with the RSS/Follow-Twitter, correct? That isn’t what I see in FireFox: “Log out” has overflowed and pushed the ad to the right, and the RSS/Follow-Twitter has been pushed toward the bottom: http://i28.tinypic.com/9tee5i.jpg
Dear Marina,
Ducks do watch. When a group of ducks sleep at night, the ducks in the center of the group will tuck their heads under a wing and sleep normally. But the ducks on the perimeter will keep their heads up, They sleep with one eye open to look out for intruders, and their other eye which faces the other ducks, is shut. This seems a good way to protect the ducks.
I’m very sorry to hear you have genophobia, because I would enjoy it very much with you. Instead, I actually thought you would be loud, enthusiastic and very happy. I’d be as warm and reassuring as I can. To prevent your clinophobia, we could use the back seat of my car, the Chevrolet Aveo. I’ve never used it for that, before. With lots of care for you, much kindness, and thoughtfulness, I’m sure I can make you happy!

I was filled with all kinds of fear as a child-older strangers caused me to cross the street, water bugs, being abducted at night by aliens, etc. I think at one point I just “got tough” about it. In your new book you have some expressions on your face like Lucielle Ball in THE LUCY SHOW-which my mom likes but I hate the sound of her voice. she did look pretty in some of her old black and white movies which I saw on TCM. I saw on HISTORY CHANNEL in a special on cocaine that Sigmund Freud the father of modern psychiatry was a heroine addict. And he wrote a book called THE INTERPRETATION OF DREAMS. My nosy police-like MD brother conveniently happened to call for my mom at 11:30 PM halfway through the show.
You have nothing to fear but fear it’s self. Ph yeah a nd that monster that lives under your bed.
Dayum, you mean I still have a chance?
That link of the list above is not complete without these.
I see that you don’t have a fear of:
- PreviousGenerationRecycledMalePhobia – fear of older men
- ShiningCaballeroBlancaPhobia – fear of white shining knights
I’ll gladly save ♥ you next Tuesday
for a platter of seafood today.
…could possibly be another channel, “hotforphobias”…
I was just thinking of that word or something along that line. I was going to make up the phobia of Philologist. Philophobia? Then I discovered ‘Philophobia’ – Fear of falling in love or being in love; was already taken. Which I find Philophobia common in many women now days. Rightly so, for I find it a good thing for one to protect them selfs from falling to quickly for the wrong man.
So how about Marinaphobia? HFWphobia? hummm…
It’s hard for me to be afraid of Marina when she is both beautiful and smart.
Have you ever had a duck follow you before ? They can be pretty mean! We have ducks around the Lake here, they are family oriented ;) and relax together as a family and if you get too close you better have food, then if you give them food, they follow you everywhere!
pinaciphobia, I was almost going to say is this supposed to be [penisiphobia] ?
You meant to say Ithyphallophobia or Medorthophobia or Phallophobia? Which is it? I would venture to guess you meant Phallophobia, yes?
I am afraid. I am VERY afraid. As the advertisement here —->
tells me I should be.
I’m not sure if it’s erithroocularphobia or merely iphoniphobia. :?:
What’s the fear of fear? Fearlessness or phobiaphobia?
Sounds like something Franklin D. Roosevelt would be familiar with.
Oh, I was about to ask about the nerd word lesson, and it looks like you just corrected it as I logged on. What was it before? Dextrophobia?
Looks like you found the fear of cockroaches.
Given the fact that ducks can quack as noisily and powerfully as trumpets, they may sometimes, banded together, come to possess a certain audible authority over the cosmopolite and colourful fauna of a swamp. But in reality, these little birds have many a predator. They sure have an exceptionally mighty vision, but unless you’re hunting them and don’t want to be seen by them, the fear of being watched by them is totally irrational.
You didn’t mention that your date sat on your left so as to not trigger your dextrophobia — but before you could realize that, when there are two at a table, one’s left is also one’s right, he opened his mouth to speak and triggered your deipnophobia.
de lift this movie is all about otisphobia [lift] decent horror flick
:o Two Girls One Duck :!: quack! *nuff said*
Gee HotForWords, with all those social phobias you’ll make an excellent “Nun-of-finest”.
Sounds like Gorby was sleeping at the switch with the katsaridaphobia or has he caught it also?
Lucy Analyzes Charlie Brown on Phobia PEANUTS Christmas  It’s a classic!
Never been much of a PEANUTS fan… there is just something depressing about it. And plus Lucy tends to add more problems and confusion rather then to solve them. She is the classic scammer.
Since you brought up dexter, how about sinister. How on earth did sinister end up with those meanings. Is it just because people thought lefties were evil? Please help teach, I’m really wondering now.
genophobia – fear of sex, dang Marina your doomed.
Not so fast with the doom and gloom … with me, her savior, she’ll have an OO experience that will cure her — the first O refers to the experience Shaq mentioned during his recent scrabble game on TV; the second O refers to the experience she mentioned in a video for that drink company.
Go for it Hs4Mm. Be her savior. ;-)
Yes that would be horrible. But there’s nothing that a very well sexually educated man can’t cure. ;-)
