This is just nuts, Marina…you’ve certainly got a pair for considering this word in the first place. Then convincing yourself to broadcast it…it takes big balls to get in front of the camera and define the meaning to “testicles” without totally losing it (can imagine the bloopers we haven’t seen from this video).

My 2 cents: It cannot be that the Greeks were saying that the testicles give testis/witness to just being a male — for the penis would do that too! I suspect the Greeks had in mind a witness to being an adult male. I don’t remember my situation, but supposedly the testicles increase in size at puberty; if so, they would become more visible at adulthood.

First, I want to emphasize, that I am not contradicting Marina, but wish to point out some interesting historical footnotes that you might find interesting. There is a ton of commentary on this topic of testament, testes and so on.

The story of the Roman myth of covering one’s testicles actually has its truth in the origin of the Old Testament in Genesis and several other places.

Refer to the Genesis and Deuteronomy reference below. Those are just a small sampling and there are many more with subtle wording.

I’m sorry that I can’t elaborate as it would take up many pages of references and historical footnotes. The pre Roman ancient beliefs revolved around virility as Marina mentioned, meaning that healthy offspring was paramount as the infant death rate was high.

The word covenant is closely related to the word testament in the sense that when one makes a promise, there usually is a form of a witnessing or testifying. A eunuch refers to castration where someone cannot offer the seed for impregnating women. How was it determined that a male was not capable of having the equipment to provide children of the marriage covenant? Check the testes.

In other circumstances, there are stories of people joining a certain men’s club where the prospective member’s testicles are checked to ascertain that the new member was indeed a male as historically, woman would dress up as males to infiltrate the club. If you don’t have the testes, you can’t join. And so, that begat the phrase, “Got you by the balls”

Another interesting related phrase with interesting ancient history is “Last Will and Testament”.

I remember in one of my history classes, we were looking at the legend of the female Pope. The historical record does seem to strongly suggest that at least one woman served as Pope. I just did some googling concerning this word: Is Test unrelated to Testis?-The Online Etymology Dictionary says Test comes from the latin ‘testum’ which means earthen pot. If the two words are unrelated, it is interesting in that the modern Test and the Latin Testis are of similar meaning.

I’ve seen outfits for rats before many years ago. Funny looking stuff. I wonder what people are doing now. There is a club in Seattle that does shows.

Because of some apartments have restriction about having a no pets policy. People went to keeping fish or small animals that can be kept in a cage or tank. Rats became really popular. Rats don’t bark. You don’t need to take them out for walks or bathroom breaks. You could leave them food for a week and never needed a pet sitter.

I was able to teach my rats commands like you would with a dog. Come, stay, beg, etc. With those basic commands I could encourage him to do a few trick. Like repel down a coaxial cable. Rats are freaking smart. One time years ago I had a small apartment. I had some food on my desk and my rat climb up on my bed. Then he got up onto the window ledge and walk the length of it until he got to my dresser. He then jumped down onto my ham radio gear which was next to my desk. He then of course got the food.

something not yet relased on youtube? It is an amazing lesson Marina, a far cry from jump lesson ( where you pretty much said ” jump is onomatopoetic… bye bye my dear students”). It has that whole origin that I love and is where you really shine as a philologist. The only thing I could find was it was pretty fast, and the noises distracted me so I got lost at one point. But it was a perfectly scripted origin I can remember.

I like how they casted Six as a science officer and not some dumb bimbo. It was smart and they knew that. Six is the one that holds the whole ship together. She is someone you can respect. Though it escapes me why she she still hangs around Chode. She could have left many times. I guess she likes the underdog that has command of his own ship. Maybe it’s just for the sex.

I think it was mellow too compared to the newer cartoons for adults that they have today like South Park. Family Guy has a lot of innuendos that you have to pick up on. South Park doesn’t care they just say and do it as they want to. Oh well, toons for adults. :lol:

Toons were really made for adults in the beginning. Then the became popular with the kids. I didn’t understand all the references in the cartoons when I was a kid until later.
