Haven’t yet seen the lesson but I think it was a derogatory term to indicate that they really destroyed the mind (“shrunk it”) rather than help it.

    Hey Marina.

I’ve noticed in alot of your videos you tend to involuntarily flex your pecs while you talk, and I started to wonder what was the origin behind the word [flex].
Another choice could be pecs, or pectorals! Much appreciated!

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/animalntaz animalntaz

I practically grew up around psychologists, ever since I was young. All because I got picked on in school and I wouldn’t bother to talk to my parents. I was put in as an inpatient at this type of hospital for a few months back in the 5th grade, because of my parents say-so. I even had electrodes on my head, the year before, to measure brain activity for some reason.
I remember one counselor who said I was gifted, and mentioned something about being put in a special school instead of public high school. But my mom was against that idea, and I stressed to improve my grades even though I was lazy.
Yeah, I think constantly being sent to seek professional help just makes life more depressing. Always being told it’s perfectly natural to see one, chemical imbalance in the brain, mental illness in family, blah, blah, blah… is a load of mental bullshit. Not very good childhood development either. It never helped before, even though my mom disagrees. But I’ve always felt misdiagnosed or neglected, so I choose never to see one.
I’ve pretty much grown independent in my way of thinking, that it is almost maddening. Hell if a shrink were to see me, I would probably drive him crazy making him question his professionalism.

“No-one likes me… You are right! No-one likes you”

I liked the origin, it came from a person.

I too think that she’s a good actress, but maybe she can only do it when she’s also the director. Maybe what she means is that she doesn’t conform to other person’s ideas of how things should be done, having her own opinions.
    I can identify with that.

Maybe they are called shrinks because the patients who are suffering feel their problem is Very Large. The therapist using discovery techniques, identifies the root of the problem and attempts to “downsize” the affects to the person… freeing up their thoughts from/about a particular burden.

Request a word. [Freelove]. Does that mean that man did not have to pay for sex in the Soviet Union the way we have to do in America? I used to be a fan of Radio Moscow in the Cold War. And I did read the 50 page Communist Mannifesto. Must have heard some lesbian leaders of Toledo heckling my house as I got up about my appreciation of your website and the remarks I made about Slata the Russian female contortionist gymanast who I also saw on INTERNATIONAL SEXY LADIES on G4 TV. As in a movie once saw some women feel they are sittting on their moneymaker. and I look forward to the downfall of the USA because even the savages in Africa got the right to love and sex. I pointed this out in a letter to the Cleveland ACLU in 1994 when lezziers were heckling me and I wished I could shoot Clinton dead.

  • http://www.tony-bernhoffer-photography.com tonyb

I love you, Marina. I went eight years to two lady shrinks just like Anthony Soprano did in the TV series on A and E THE SOPRANOS. They seemed to disbielve everything I told them I was goign to quit the Dr. Lisa who looked like you but she had no breasts. But I went to see the movie THE NET with Sandra Bullocks for $1.00 and the lady computer programmer saw a shrink who also seemed to disbelieve anything she told him. and she said sagely that psychiatirsts and psychologists all disbelieve their patieints!!! I was homophobic one said. And I did prefer a kind woman doctor to some fag who might try to come on to me. I considered how them doctors disbelieved everything I said so I sent people like The Voice of Russia and others some scanned letters about my failed career. I even sent digital photos of people who had been harassing me on my street. I just have gotten ideas from their refusal to believe me. and I htink I heard and saw the US Attorney Vera Armstrong from my 1990 Bankruptcy walking in the office suite of one psychologist. Stresscare is also a state of Ohio contractor and does psychological evaluations for the courts.

“Girl, it is not you that I like. It is your body”. – Nobody (would dare to say that of course)

Caray, if your alter is thinking about chopping off the head of your ego and transform it into a superb keyholder, about turning your body into a sandwich, then you definitely need to summon a shrink. For shrinks may not be the brightest bulbs on earth, but they are at least good at one thing: establishing a perfectly neutral and equilibrated dialog between alters and their egos. And vice-versa.

Speaking of wich, this shrink possessed a very nice.. what do I say… an absolutely outstanding pair of bifocals, although it is obvious that these were not genuine Kazuo Kawasaki 704s. She could very well see that nobody liked her, before she was killed and her head reduced to the size of a mexican bean. And now, nobody will have her body. Very sad indeed, must I say. Yeah.

Most girls on yachts are eye candy. Marina’s tanning Body Double is actually an airhead (you know Paris Hilton has three tanning body doubles!). That’s why the BD’s head falls over when she’s been eating too much brain candy. The weight of all those thoughts affect the posture and she gets a HANGOVER. You can always tell the real Marina Orlova: Erect posture from being “Brain Candy with a Body”…that’s a whole different thing, according to Goggles. My doctor says it’s OK to listen to the subliminal messages in the videos.

  • http://www.wyo550.com wyo550

Bob, am I the only one affected by the subliminal messages in the video: BUY POPCORN, WALK THE DOG, READ A BOOK?
Why do I feel an urge to dust and vacuum?

As the soap bubble would say: “Swell shall I, for the needle which will burst me is still a coiled steel wire in its needle factory.”

  • xyc

Is the word [uncopyrightable] really the longest word spelled without repeating a letter?

  • hs4mm

I have a sense that there is something serious inferior in the GoDaddy pictures — Marina’s pictures with photographers she hired on her own and those that are taken casually “by strangers” are a zillion times superior to those GD images.

I do not have an exact statement of what is inferior with the GD images, but they do seem inferior for some reason.

It is as though the photographer, make-up artist and director at the shoot were out of their depths in dealing with Marina — she is way above the kind of models they are used to dealing with and they were unable to capture her essence and project it in the ads. They have ended up capturing nothing.

I am tempted to complain to Bob Parsons along the above lines …

  • http://twitter.com/HotforThai Bob

You’ve completely lost me, John. Maybe I am concentrating too much on the superficial to see the subliminal.
[Hmm ... How much altitude is there between the ficial and the liminal and which is uppermost?]
Anyway, I’ve played the video over and over and failed to be affected. Should I see a shrink or does my mind need expanding?

  • dupsie

    Hey Marina!

I’ve seen in alot of your videos that you have the tendency to involuntariy flex your chest. I would like to know the word origin of the word [flex].

  • seesixcm6

    Dear Marina,
That photo of yourself with your hands in your hair is the most dramatic I’ve seen. If you autograph it, write only on the bottom edges of the photo!
I took Psychology as an academic minor because the courses were easy compared to Engineering. (I had 21 semester units of “A” grades.) I got to study with several shrinks, and I found out I wasn’t as crazy as I thought!
Frankly, I thought they were called “shrinks” because their practice was to “shrink” the excessive concerns of their patients. By putting their problems in perspective, patients can handle life better.

There are no subliminal messages in the video. I was affected by foreign powers. President Amadenajhad won the election fair and square. Why do I still want to vacuum and dust?

Really?? I thought it was just my internet. Yeah I get that same swirls thing often. Even when I pause the video and let the whole thing load. I’ll get it near the end. Come to think of it, I don’t see the last 10 seconds of the video.

Oh Im just reading the comments above mine and I see Seankim also is having issues. Hummm interesting. Assuming that everyone has speeds above 1mbps down, the video should download rather quickly. Im guessing Youtube is having issues or the internet providers are not delivering on their promises.Which is not unusual. A quick visit to broadbandreports.com you can find many examples of this.

It would be really nice to get 60 mbps like other countries do, for example South Korea. Maybe someday the US will rise up and be a leader in internet infrastructure.

  • Capman911

I am also having problems with the smiley faces not showing up. It might be something on my end or maybe a glitch with the new plug in about the gravatar name change to another web site and now your Gravatar lets people go to your personal web site. I didn’t know all this changed until Bob just told me. Hmmm I miss all the news.

Hi Marina, Could you tell me the origin of the word [taramasalata]? Also do you know if there are any other words in the English language that are as long as this, in which every alternate letter is the same letter?

  • http://www.mentalhealthcare.proboards.com/index.cgi honeybunny34j

I have a headshrinker called Dr Williams who I see monthly. I used to have a psychiatrist who visited me weekly at home, who looked like Merlin the magician.

  • http://captainjack.ws Captain Jack

    What’s your internet providers speeds?

  • http://captainjack.ws Captain Jack

LoL, I just discovered the gravatar link feature last night also. Don’t feel to left out. I’m not sure it’s gravatar but it might be a new WordPress feature. Marina moved to new servers last night and also updated WordPress. Though the update was mostly for improved security features.

Maybe Marina will make a post about what new with the servers. I heard they are now on scalable cluster system that will improve performance during heavy loads like when her Bill O’Reilly show comes on.

Your smiley faces should load fine. Just clear your cache and restart your browser to see if that fixes it.

Marina could be making two uses of our homework responses. Number one, she could be building personality profiles to find her ideal partner. Two, she could use them to [blackmail] us.

    Hello xyc,
The isogram “uncopyrightable”, which is a 15 letter word where no letter is used more than once, is one of the longest words, but a longer word could be made by adding an “s” to the end of that word making it, “uncopyrightables”.

    Other isograms are:
    misconjugatedly
    dermatoglyphics
subdermatoglyphic – this word has 17 letters, indicating that this is the longest isogram, but it is a very obscure word.

  • djabberwocky

hey DarkePrince Jesus is the Greek rendering of the Hebrew/Aramaic name Jehoshua pronounced (in the Greek) Iesous or Ee yay sooce the same root word for the name in Hebrew of Joshua (Jehoshua) pronounced Yhowshuwa or ye ho shoo ah the meaning of which is Jehovah-saved. If you were to pronounce the name of our Saviour (Jesus) in its original tongue of Hebrew it would sound something like Yeshua.

you should do the word ‘sexaholic”, it has 2 very widely used words in it, like sex, and holic. I know that if a word has sex in it it’s probably going to be good, but the holic part of it makes it sound bad and overused, but whats wrong with a lot of sex? :| So if you could find out where it originated rom that would be great.

I went to the Mental Hygeine Clininc at Fort Mcclellan, Alabama in 1978. the man there a Mr. Boullemet (not even a licensed pyschotherapist) told me I was suffering from a persecution complex. But a persecution complex does not corner you in the latrine lilke David Schultz aned Derek Venzant did threatening to carve you up with a knife trying to rape you. They did not succeed in raping me. But Mr. Boullemet was full of shit in that regard. Complexes are not real actual people who attack you in real life and threaten you life. And I was threatened at night because I did not smoke dope and they thought I was a [rat] and [ate cheese] on them. But I did not snitch on anyone to the cops. But I did complain when Derek Venzant tried to corner me in the latrine and tried to force sex on me. I was no shrimp, either. I was 6 foot tall and weighed 200 pounds.

Spelcheck, did you see that I did your video request a couple days ago? Acronym and then all the commenters on YouTube said things like “Jeeze, what a stupid bitch, doesn’t know how to spell spellcheck”.. stuff like that! Was hilarious!!!!

  • http://www.HotForThisWorld.com Hs4Mm

Did you see G’Dy Marketing crew does not know how to spell: http://twitpic.com/cud9c ? And did you see my comment 16.2.2? That spelling error gives me added ammunition to complain to the owner … but I still don’t know if I should.

  • http://mentalgrammarhasbeensetup.blogspot.com äläx

“she’s way above the kind of models …” — what?
    “capture her essence”? — what?

  • http://www.HotForThisWorld.com Hs4Mm

äläx asked good questions about my Comment 16.2.2 — his questions require that I elaborate on my comment. I will indicate the elaboration here: G’Ddy depicts DanPat as herself, viz, a successful race car driver. They ought to depict you as yourself too — a successful etymologist and business woman who conducts business on the internet.

Instead, they have depicted you as a flat cardboard figure!

The Marketing Crew can understand a “race car driver” and use that person to create a meaningful message. But they have no idea of “an etymologist businesswoman successful on the internet” — they end up creating a zero.

I know that this is a photo-ad and not a video-ad but still a good Marketing Photo team should be able to show you for what you are even in a photo. They do not show DanPat as a flat cardboard figure, do they? Even in photos, they show her as a 3-D person active in a 3-D world of concretes.

The most the assholes understood was “teacher” — so they used an apple as a prop! No OED, no laptop, no camera, no bluescreen — no meaningful prop!

(On a personal note, in all the G’Ddy pictures you have a bowed head — I do not like that pose — it comes across as a cheap attempt at being coy from a person who has nothing to offer. The slut on the street which that photo-crew uses might use such a look. You are too good for that. I did rather see a head held high/level, proud, clear, actively thinking etc.)

Aside: It is true that till recently you had some other hosting company (hostdime?) and that your beginning and growth involved them. But that fact does not prevent G’Ddy from communicating their value without lying.

  • http://www.HotForThisWorld.com Hs4Mm

As very specific illustrations, instead of having you biting your spectacles and looking stupid next to a blackboard, they could have shown you in an active pose just having finished writing the very same message, perhaps as in this photo. Or they could have shown you in just after you finished making up the report card for G’Ddy.

    See the difference?

well, maybe you’re kinda over thinking it but i do see your point.

i don’t like the ad as well, for two other reasons, though.
first, as you and someone else mentioned, there’s a spelling error.
second, one should think that a company like godaddy could afford a graphic designer, apparently they can’t. looks like a fucking collage we did in art class in elementary school. (“what do you mean, it takes some time? it’s an ad, damnit, and i need it in 20 minutes … what? … background? … i don’t know what you’re talking about, just roughly cut out the chic and paste it in there … what do you mean, hair? she’s got boobs, no one’s gonna notice, get to work.”)

If you don’t like the way they are portraying me in the banner, you are entitled to your opinion.. just realize that I really like the company, I registered hotforwords.com with them back in 2007, and they have a particular style about them. I actually like the banners.. I think they are kind of funny… not taking themselves seriously… which is what I think they were going for.

Some create zeros, others destroy them. Some prefer to bow, others prefer to break. It is a diversified world. If you don’t like cheap and don’t like GoDaddy’s ways and his girls, the most intelligent thing you can do is refuse him the 99 cents he asks from you. And pay more for your domain.

“A strenuous soul hates cheap success.”
    – Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 – 1882)

  • http://www.HotForThisWorld.com Hs4Mm

I expressed my opinion before you asked for them. And it was äläx, not you, who asked for an elaboration; yet I replied to you (in addition to giving äläx the link to where I elaborated on my opinion). You had not expressed any interest in an elaboration, yet I gave you one.

So, to restate my question in 84, was I boring you with my opinions/elaborations?

Strictly speaking, I am not embarrassed of my estimation and reasoning on the ads; I am proud of what I have expressed, irrespective of anyone else’s estimation of my thoughts. But I do not want to be a bore you or to anyone else — that bothers me.

In 59.1.1.2.2 you dismissed my opinion with the the following:

I think they are kind of funny… not taking themselves seriously… which is what I think they were going for.

At the risk of further boring you: The depiction of you as a mindless slut with a “come hither” look is not funny … it is an asinine disregard of your value. It is smutty and the experience it provides is that of rolling in a shitty gutter — and it can be enjoyed by those think sex is evil. This type of enjoyment is downgrading.

In contrast, the two pictures I cited in 59.1.1.3 (viz, http://www.hotforwords.com/wp-content/uploads/mar104.jpg and http://www.hotforwords.com/wp-content/uploads/report-card1-150×112.jpg ) depict a school girl being a teacher — which has a certain benevolent, innocent humor about it. Those pictures do have a physical/bodily sexual aspect in them — and they are uplifting and enjoyable.

Mindlessness in any form is not funny.

You banner says “Intelligence is sexy.” Well, it takes intelligence to be sexy … and it takes intelligence to be funny. By depicting you as a slut, they have underestimated your value — those ads give evidence of a gross absence of intelligence on the part of its creators.

Here’s a more abstract view on those ads: The ancient Egyptians did not have a conscious knowledge that the world and humans are 3 dimensional. So their status depict the human form as a flat thing. It took a few hundres years before the Greeks acquired conscious knowledge of the 3-dimensional nature of this world and started depicting humans as 3-dimensional being with mass. The mug shot of you in the ad depicts you as a flat, cardboard figure. The two pictures of you as a school-girl-teacher show you as a 3-dimensional being with mass in a 3-dimensional world. The intelligence of the crew that created those flat-ads is at the level of the ancient Egyptians!

    Are these engrossing thoughts?

  • http://www.HotForThisWorld.com Hs4Mm

Oops! need to clarify a point in 84.1.1.1: I wrote: “… it can be enjoyed by those think sex is evil.” Some sexual relations are good and others are bad; so I should have written: “.. it can be enjoyed by those think any form of sex is evil — by those who think that the human sexual capacity as such is evil.”

In my opinion, GoDaddy should definitely trade the turban for a sombrero. I am sorry, but as I see things now, the most money I will accept to pay for a GoDaddy domain is 97 cents.

Now, if GoDaddy trades his turban for a sombrero, and the bottle of genie smoke for a bottle of corona, I’ll accept to buy a GoDaddy domain for 98 cents.

I do also think that the little “o” in the GoDaddy publicity should be replaced by GoDaddy’s head and neck, perhaps wearing some motorcycle gear. This is of course my personal opinion of what I think of GoDaddy’s ads quality.

So good with books and finding words, Marina. How is it finding origins to any words in this day & age? Everything going digital, information scattered and from unreliable sources. Hardly anyone uses books anymore.

I know I find the internet difficult to look through for reliable information. There may be lots of results in a search, but all of them are from random .com sites that could have been made in someone’s basement.

Good observations. I’ve been in graphic design for nearly 10 years and it’s just how you describe. Especially where you say, “what do you mean, it takes some time? it’s an ad, damnit, and i need it in 20 min..”. All too often it’s about productionproductionproduction and true creativity and skill is left out. One of my peeves is to see a background incompletely masked or poorly done. grrrr. And there’s no reason for spelling errors (more than one person should proofread before a design is released). I don’t use spellcheck since there’s too many synonyms and homonyms, etc. in language (all languages?).. spellcheck does not understand context.

My two cents on the comments below: I tend to agree with Hs4Mm in that the pictures that are purely sexual tend to demean the Lady. Lady Marina has so many qualities, concentrating on her sexuality emphasizes that single, surface aspect, and hides her deeper, more significant qualities. As for her physical beauty, it shows anyway. Any attempt to highlight it, just simplifies the Lady and is counter-productive.

  • http://www.HotForThisWorld.com Hs4Mm

    @CaptainJack Re 84.1.1.1.1:

I was all set to write and send a nicely formulated feedback email, but am having second thoughts.

For background, when DrP interviewed Marina, I was under the impression that G’D was the hosting company for HFW — so I did contact him about why the site had issues such as needing to be in view-only mode whenever O’Reilly came on, and not being able to support all comments in one page. I do not know if my having done so had any effect (positive, negative, neutral) on the present switch over to hosting by them.

Regarding my opinion on the quality of the ads: I like Marina and would like to see her portrayed as well as possible. I very seriously maintain that the compositions/story-telling in these ADs could have been better, perhaps along the lines of the two photos I cite in my nearby comments. Furthermore, some of the photos Marina tweeted recently and the ones taken by professional photographers she hired are much more explicitly sexual — much more risqué — yet, in them, she come across as a very elegant, intelligent lady whose company would be enjoyable (even in the “nude” photo that was discovered recently)!

One of my reasons for having second thoughts on providing feedback is neuroway’s comment 86 below. Who am I — just some Joe Public on the street — I am not party to the arrangement between HotForWords and GoDaddy. These two people have the right to run their businesses and lives as they see fit. In this matter, I am just a spectator. They have not asked me for my opinion. So why should I butt in even if I am hurt by what they are creating? I must grant them the respect of thinking that they both are using their minds to the fullest of their ability to do the best for themselves. Even if I happen to have more knowledge than them about some matter, it is not appropriate for me to gratuitously push my knowledge on them as “feedback” — they have not asked me for feedback. They are busy living their lives, and I have no right to interrupt them to get them to start considering my opinions. What I can do is to not let the cringing at the site of these ads bother me, to be able to see these ads calmly, and to not let the existence of these ads bother me too much.

Regarding professionals valuing feedback: Suppose I were, say, a beginning photographer who was interested in feedback on his work. Then, if I learnt that my work was on display at a blog, I would make time to go to that blog and see what was being said about my work. As a real example, when Marina gave a ShoutOut to that “Michaelamanda*whatever” guy (the guy who made the video of himself suddenly going from one chair to another) he came and read the comments on that page (and even responded to some of them). So I think if the G’D crew were really interested in feedback on their work, it would be their responsibility to make time to visit this site and read what was being said; if nothing was being said and they still wanted feedback, they could register and explicitly ask for feedback. So from this point too I must not push my feedback on them!

    What say you?

Honey, you’re a genius. You do precisely what I wanted to do. I use a lot of philology when teaching English here in Brazil and my dear students like it a lot. I’m going to download the video and show everyone at school! Whenever I can’t figure out the origin myself I go to your word archive. Love it! Also, your approach to it is perfect!

About the origin itself, wow! That is so interesting! And literary. Loved it. Thank you sweetie! Whenever they get me another conundrum I’ll send it to you. By the way, let me check if you have the word conundrum already investigated. That should be a good idea!

I’ve told you this before, but I’m also a Brazilian Portuguese translator and I’d be delighted to translate your book. Contact me whenever you feel international. Also, come party in Floripa/Brazil! I’ll take you to the hottest spots ^.^

Shrink: What a timely topic for me. My ex-wife sends our teenage daughter to a shrink, who prescribed Luvox (a Prozac-related antidepressant) for her anxiety. Last night at 3AM at my home, she suffered an attack of acute [akathisia], bordering on convulsions, an occasional side effect of the drug.

People, if your teenagers suffer depression or anxiety, first try sunshine, fresh air, exercise (especially team sports), positive human interactions, sensible sleep schedules, good diet, and limits on electronic entertainment. SSRI medications can be helpful, but they’re dangerous.

    Yes, seriously.

  • http://doodiepants.com doodiepants

Are you kidding? You guys are actually commenting on this. Of course she’s looking sexy in her ads. I don’t know that they are demeaning, but they are selling sex to a certain extent.

This whole site is as successful as it is because of her hotness. Half of her word videos have her in bikini or skimpy outfit. Slutty, classy, sexy, call it what you will, but the images of Marina are what sells.

Don’t get me wrong, her content is awesome and her site and concept is excellent.

But if a regular old 50 something guy was doing “Hot For Words”………would I have clicked on it? No.
Would she be on Oreilly? Probably not.

Whether is nude, non-nude, classy, porn, 2d, 3d, whatever…….sex sells. Big deal. Props for Marina capitalizing on it.

  • http://doodiepants.com doodiepants

who cares if they’re slutty? Isn’t that the point?

  • http://doodiepants.com doodiepants

What a joke…….. get over it. Sex sells. Marina knows it. And you’re on here whining about the smuttiness of her ads and how they don’t portray her well. Let her worry about what she wants to be party to on the internet.

  • http://www.HotForThisWorld.com Hs4Mm

Regarding what sells (including regarding whether anyone would watch “a regular, old 50 something guy” teaching etymology): you might want to look at the videos from a bunch of girls (4 girls?) on YouTube with names such as “hot for tools” and “hot for facts”, if you haven’t already.

Irrelevant. Marina sells her sexiness along with her interesting word Knowledge and excellent production quality. With out her sexiness\sluttiness\hotness, whatever you want to call it, the formula breaks down.

i agree with alex and damiana as a strictly artistic critique that the go daddy advertising image as it is presented seems flat and two dimensional. however, this seems even more appropriate as so many on hfw attempt to dress her up the way they want as if playing with a paper doll as they debate her public image.

maybe marina should post a marina paper doll that will satisfy the various ideals that are negotiated here. such as: slutty marina, academic marina, celebrity marina, geek marina, republican marina, social anarchist marina, etc…

  • rijk

Like the paper doll idear

But it’s very simple, if you make all the pictures / ads the same, there not gone stand out individually. So it makes perfect sense there is a difference in the pictures. And there is so much talk about this one it must be doing a good job. ;-)

I don’t know if it has anything to do with the word “shrink” or the video itself, but just go back and look through the comments. It is flame war after flame war, small ones but flame wars just the same. Even Marina has gotten into a couple herself. What has this site come to? Is it going to be this way on all of the new videos? What kind of example is being sent to the nOObys that come to this site as well as the older members that are here already? We once put a stop to arguments like this only to restart them again. Members leave and quit because of stuff like this, they don’t come here to be humiliated in front of others and they get tired of the BS.
Take this as you will but I don’t have to be apart of shit like this. There are plenty of other sites a person can go and be apart of. The hostility here is unbecoming to me. I like a friendly atmosphere to comment in and have fun and maybe learn a few things.
Comment as you like as it is an open site and Marina wants it organic, so fertilize it all you want to.

I think you are right, Capman. Intelligence should be used to help others, not to humiliate them.

  • Venomrock67

Hey Capman, You’re right but unfortunately it’s only natural for people to get into scuffles and a war of words can humiliate or anger someone, (and even HFW isn’t immune from that), but this site is way better then say like “myspace” or “facebook” I’ll admit I first checked out this site because of Marina’s looks and then I started to listen to what she was saying in her lessons and I said okay this is different, you can actually be entertained and learn some things (whether it’s valuable or just for fun) at the same time. I think Marina maybe wants to keep it this way, you can say what you want because it’s part of being real (in my opinion) I even tried to throw in a comment in a middle of a thread about halfway down this page to lighten up the mood. I can’t tell if these two individuals were serious or just clownin around. I’ve learned a few things from you Cap and I just want to tell you don’t worry bro it’ll all work out so stick around.

  • Venomrock67

Dude, these dolls are downloadable for free. They are as free as the wind. They have no customers to satisfy, no bosses to endure, no competitors to compete with, they need no help from supporters. I’m not even sure the owner of the site gets money when you click on them. Are you sure this is appropriate?

I do however feel it is appropriate to insert an add about filet mignon here, but I just decided not to do it.

“The shepherd drives the wolf from the sheep’s throat, for which the sheep thanks the shepherd as his liberator, while the wolf denounces him for the same act, as the destroyer of liberty. Plainly the sheep and the wolf are not agreed upon a definition of the word liberty; and precisely the same difference prevails today among human creatures.”
    – Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865)

In cases like that, it’s best to gain access to information found only in accredited scientific journals through, say, a subscription to a specific journal (related to your area of interest) or a university library membership.

They often will require a username and password just to look through the index of articles available, so a membership is necessary. These kinds of papers are generally written by real researchers (scientists, college professors, graduate students, etc.) working in an academic environment and their findings are usually reviewed by their peers.

You can access peer reviews to see what others in their field have said about them if you have doubts about their findings. The write-ups generally require intensive documentation and involve a lot of scientific proof, so once you access them it’s far less likely you’ll get fooled by people with wild ideas they can’t possibly verify. ;-)

    Hi xyc,

Excellent question! Grab a cup of coffee, this is a long story…

The way I heard it, way back before microchips were invented, early computers were the size of a whole room (in this case, in a garage out back of the house) and they used to have hundreds or even thousands of switches inside them in order to produce binary code: a switch in the “on” position indicated a “1″ and a switch in the “off” position indicated a “zero.”

Large banks of switches were lined up and stacked together inside big metal frames (origin of the term “mainframe”). Each switch was activated by an electromagnet, and they weren’t miniaturized like they are today. When current is sent to the electromagnet inside a switch, the magnetic force generated by the electrical current closes the switch (“on,” or “1″) and when no current passes through it, it remains open (“off,” or “zero”). Combinations of these ones and zeros could be “read” as representing different letters and numbers, forming an answer to a query, etc.

Still with me? One day, the computer kept getting the wrong answers, and it was apparent that something wasn’t working the way it was supposed to work. So the people who designed and built it went inside the mainframe and tested the switches one by one looking for the switch that wasn’t functioning properly.

They eventually found it, and when they opened it up they saw that a small spider had moved into the tiny space between the contacts inside the switch and built its home, effectively preventing it from closing when the current ran through it. Once the switch was replaced, the computer worked normally again. From what I’m told, that’s the origin of the term “bug.” Hopefully, Marina will do a lesson on this. Cool request, xyc!

A person sitting in an angry chair gets caught up in everyday affairs or things that don’t concern them. When you have a lot on your mind then it tends to overflow out into the public. As the statement above that I made and to much to drink to drown one’s sorrows doesn’t help one’s outlook or comments. Piece to one and all.

I had seen on China TV some exhibit for the Shanghai World Expo and it also showed some women dressed in shiny white dresses and a veil over their heads like in this video. And they also had on pretty white makeup like those Geisha girls. And they looked romantic. But I wondered for the life of me who were they and where did they come from? I got into the habit of watching TV with the sound off when my holier than thou mother would pray for an hour at night and she ordered me to either turn off the TV or turn off the sound. and I got into this haibt of watching TV with the sound off. But those young women all dressed in white from head to toe actually looked lovely and where did they come from. China TV showed four of them sitting at a dinner table.

No, I have never been to a shrink. I killed the last person that suggested that I go by mummifying him with thousands of little pieces Scotch tape. It took a half a day. He looked like a butterfly cocoon by the time I got done and moved around on the floor like one for a few minutes at least. His last words were, “Mmmmmfph!”" (At least I think it was several words; it could have been one long word, though.)

I’m feeling fine. Why do you ask?

Maybe it started out meaning bad, but morphed into meaning good, possibly by appearing in a specific printing/event in which the good meaning was implied and it happened to catch on.

In the dictionary, this word also currently has the meaning of bad as well as good. There exist many words that have two opposed meanings, such as cleave. Not much we can do about it now. You should have complained long time ago. Where were you then? Don’t give us that crap about being over at a friend’s place playing Monopoly. You just didn’t care! You just let it happen, figuring someone else would pick up the pieces and put Humpty Dumpty back together again like it never happened. That’s just like you. First there was the Holocaust. Then that 800,000 thing in Ruwanda, and now THIS! Oh, i am just so bummed. (Camp Kohler starts looking in the Yellow Pages: “S… Shr… Shrin… Psychiatrists. Here we are. Rats! It’s not a toll-free number. Nevermind.”)

  • Camp Kohler – Sacramento CA

I forget. Is the bell the one at the end of a boxing round that stops a slaughter or the one placed above a grave to allow someone mistakenly buried alive to pull a string and signal those above? Can’t remember.

  • Camp Kohler – Sacramento CA

This is a good point, especially with everyone and his brother coining words every fourteen seconds, like staycation. To keep up with it all, there would have to be a whole building of scholars nailing down word origins before the Webpages that first carried them evaporated. Imagine, in the “olden days” of musty print archives, new words appeared so infrequently that it was possible to study and research them, but when every Tom, Dick and Harry is publishing things daily like they were working for the NY Times there would have to almost be as many scholars as authors. It’s a losing battle and perhaps this generation will be the first where etymology is just another victim of a Bermuda Triangle cyberfog. (Ooops! I just coined one, and ‘You Were There.”)
