Floor-a da...Rare Grateful Dead "Stir It Up" Bob Marley Cover 3-26-1988
...Stir It Up" was Bob Marley's first successful song outside Jamaica. Another song written by Bob Marley, "I Shot The Sheriff", was made a hit by Eric Clapton in 1974. Marley's first "own" international hit would be "No Woman No Cry," the live version from the Bob Marley and the Wailers Live! album in 1975. One distinction particular to this song, is that the single version (from the 45 rpm original hit release) has never been made available on CD

This one reminded me of several false etymologies: beach is not connected to bitch, though in some languages the pronunciation would be close, bikini and monokini, picnic versus pyknic. Have you explored false etymologies recently? Some are real howlers. (Would beach/bitch qualify?)

With regard to the above mentioned monokini, there is disturbing news this is disappearing from French beaches.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8178818.stm

The group Les Chiennes de Garde, mentioned there, brings this post full circle. Isn't this a deliberately provocative name? What is the status of animal epithets in various languages? Is this, like the French canicule, appropriate for beaches and the dog days of summer?

p.s. Marina, you come alive on camera when you start to explain things. There are far too many people who can smile vacuously and jiggle. Your quirky "I've got a secret" expression might keep more viewers long enough to hear your words, if you can maintain amusement long enough. (How anything good survives broadcast is a constant mystery to a curmudgeon like me. Congratulations on what you've achieved so far.)

I'm not trying to defend him or anything Alex - but the clips you see on YouTube are a sampling of different points over 10 years of shows where he has come off that way. They are put on there by the people who can't stand him to make sure you never watch his actual show.

If someone wanted to make a compilation of things you or I have said that made us look like Assholes - I know it wouldn't be too hard to do - at least in my case.

I'd suggest (if you can stand it) to try watching a sample of his shows randomly - streamed on the net as they are broadcast in context and see if you feel the same way.

His shouting episodes and shutting people up have only happened a handful of times over 10 years - but those are about the only ones available on YT. If that's all he did he wouldn't be the highest rated news show on cable.

It IS true he has a big Ego, and it is also true he has that 'classic Irish temper' that you see come out in those clips - but that is NOT all he is about.

Try it and tell me what you think.

nope never seen that. but i know of the hypothesis. i don't agree with it for a lot of reasons. but first, cultural anthropology.

when a human puts on a public display even a scientific lecture it is also a cultural performance. her role and rhetoric i would argue has a symbolic value to the audience that is of more significance than the hypothesis she is advocating. the typical TED audience i would expect, appreciate being described as "progressive, independent, liberal, innovated, bold, avant-garde". ms. morgan seemingly exemplifies these characteristics as she confronts the academic/scientific establishment.

she and her hypothesis are a symbol of the values of the cultural group represented by the audience. note the times in which the audience responds to her lecture. displays of support usually occur when she mocks the established ideas of the elite. it is her symbolic role more so than her hypothesis that the audience is valuing. who doesn't like a david and goliath story. i'd cheer for any old lady that hit one of my professors in the face with a purse. that doesn't mean i'd agree with her ideas. the audience displays the most satisfaction when she expresses something that confirms their own roles, perceptions or values. the audience gives her a standing ovation because they, consciously or not, support the plot of the performance not the science of the theory.

as for the theory, there are a lot of problems with it. see here, scroll down and select the "a brief critique of morgan's..." link. its not that brief.

when i get to teaching anthropology i'd like to use these different theories and their supporters to discuss the complexities of culture and science as well as the development of good scientific theory and methodology. maybe divide the class and have them debate the issue in front of an audience. then have them analyze all the forces that are influencing everyone involved, the rational and irrational.

i'm going to note that lecture, good stuff. thanks.
