I took ancient Greek in school for a short time, and the only sentence that I still can translate is John 1:1:

εν αρχη ην ο λογοϲ, και ο λογοϲ ην προϲ τον θεον και θεοϲ ην ο λογοϲ.

We’ve spent so much time with the word λογοϲ (logos) that it became one of my all-time favourite words.

    Hi Marina,

Saw a nice photo of you with some other “hotties” and David Furnish last night on a Canadian TV show called eTalk… it is a entertainment news program much the same as Entertainment Tonight.

    James is right.
They are terribly mishandling the document.
Glad it’s being photographed before they totally screw it up.

Would love to read the literal translation.

    Psalms Chapter 2 Verses 1-5
Why did nations grow insolent, and peoples contemplate vain things? The kings of the earth stood side by side, and the rulers gathered together, against the Lord and against his anointed, Interlude on strings “Let us burst their bonds asunder and cast their yoke from us.” He who resides in the heavens will laugh at them, and the Lord will mock them. Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and in his anger he will trouble them.
    It’s all very pre-science.

It’s the same with trying to learn Thai writing; no gaps between words, no punctuation and in addition, there are 44 consonants, 32 vowels and a goodly handful of tone marks and other squiggles to indicate, for example, that this or that letter is silent or repeated …

You surprise me Marina by putting up religious material or artifacts on your site. I know this doesn’t mean we will get into religious debates, but I am very proud of you for displaying this rare and old bible.

**Damn Safari 4.0 froze on me. Talk about bloatware. Sad to see Apple is slipping lower in their application performance. **

I could ask my Greek friend could translate it but I feel she would summarize it for me in just a few words. I would like to be able to read the original text, but I feel I would not be able to translate the full text correctly. For the weight of some words and thoughts don’t hold the same weight as the did in the past. For example have any of you seen the movie ‘A Knight’s Tale’? That’s an example how they took the original story and updated it to make an attempt to show us what it was like back then. More of an …. oh I can’t think of the word I need here… well I hope you get the idea. They added more weight to the story by putting it into modern day sense. I agree that the movie was kind of corny sounding but I really enjoyed it for I had a bit more connection to it. Do note, I was in the SCA, so I know a bit how medieval times were like.

The Dead Sea Scrolls were on display at Seattle’s Pacific Science Center last year. I didn’t get a chance to see them. Lines were a bit long and I hate lines more than anything unless I have a friend with me to talk to. I hear they have been scanned and are available online. Might have to take a look at them someday.

*Note: I will not discuss any of my or your religious views or opinion here. I don’t want to offend anyone here nor do I want you to offend me. I will only discuss in general terms, about the texts. *

I burned my Bible years ago in a barbeque grill, so many years ago. (I had to tear it to shreds first, since it was difficult to burn it whole.) I was going through a very difficult time for years, that the Evangelical movement had proven to be very psychologically damaging for me. I was formally a born-again (committed), more by persuasion than by choice. I hated how they got inside my head like that, that nobody would come near me for the longest time and continued to talk shit behind my back. I lost years of my life, being unable to trust anyone and not allow myself to risk getting hurt further. It still echoes in my mind today and I try to forget about it.

I remember visiting Seattle’s Pacific Science Center on a field trip, as a young teen. Our class took a ferry ride from the Bremerton area. The only things I could remember from the Science Center was 2 red, large, parallel dishes that bounce sound waves off each other and a bicycle high on a circular rail with weights attached.
I don’t even remember if I mentioned this before, my memory is fuzzy.

It’s so sad that we’ve lost almost the whole ancient literature. I wonder how the world would look like today if printing had been invented in antiquity so that much more could have been preserved.

That is so neat! Lat year I wanted to buy from Ebay a single leaf from a 1500′s Holy Bible for $50.00 but I was not sure if it was legit. And I did not know how to have it framed to hang on the wall of my home office. I think it was Matthew 24. and I could not believe that a page from a Bible over 500 years old could be so inexpensive!

I totally agree with your “note” Jack. Discussions like this could only start one heck of a debate, good or bad it’s like politics or taking any one countries side on any subject as there are so many fine cultures represented here, they need to stay mute as we have put out many a flame war over less.

Some of you cats surprise me a little (and others are not surprising me at all… ) What is the deal with shying away from a discussion on faith – or even politics for that matter. These are the parts of our lives that matter the most, and we choose to refrain from discussion with those we find to be worthy of such discussions? I agree that off-topic discussions could be taken to one of the forums, but is it so wrong to initiate a heartfelt discussion here? I love Jesus, and I love to discuss him. In a crowd such as this, I am sure I could learn some very interesting, new ideas.

On the same note, if anyone wants to discuss the Buddha, Allah, Jehovah, Vishnu or Shiva, or just spirituality in general, feel free to lay it to me. I have had several intimate discussions with a few people from this site. Some have had similar viewpoints to mine, but others have been very different. I have grown from each of these discussions. If you choose to disqualify yourself from these discussions, then I will respect your wishes. At the same time, I want others to feel free to share any ideas at all. Like I said earlier, if the discussion gets too far off-topic, we can always head off to another classroom.
    as-salamu ‘alaykum

Now that I have actually watched the video …
Marina, do you know more about this project? A few items were a little odd to me. First, as James mentioned, the very rough handling of the document itself. I have researched some old documents (nothing like this, of course), but even documents only a couple hundred years old requires the use of cotton gloves.

They said this Bible was from the fourth century. The oldest collection that I had heard referenced was from the sixth century. This is the part that fascinates me most, and I would love to learn more about this.

The document looks to be in extremely good condition for a sixteen-hundred year-old document. Was that the original artifact, or perhaps it was a facsimile we saw? If anybody has any insight, please share!

  • logischabbaubar

The Codex Sinaiticus wasn’t written on paper but on parchment. The German Wikipedia says that the skin of 700 goats were required to produce the parchment on which it is written. It also says that this codex is one out of 50 bible copies that have been produced upon order of emperor Constantine the Great.

  • logischabbaubar

I agree with Captain Jack that we shouldn’t discuss our beliefs or our lack of beliefs here.

One of the main characteristics of Marina’s community is that it’s very friendly here compared to the rest of the internet. I appreciate that and I don’t want to ruin that.

If I would honestly write what I think about religion in general and Christianity and Islam in particular that would be very offensive to other people here, so an honest discussion could easily become very ugly. I could surely try to be less offensive, but in that case I would be dishonest, so that wouldn’t make sense either.

    @Bsomebody and logischabbaubar
I agree with both of you. I have tried to have a political discourse a few times on ‘Power of Words’ or ‘America’ in the Forum(once with b), but it always seems people are taking it off point and it loses steam. Now that there is a private message option over there I guess it would work but that makes the whole concept of ‘Forum’ kaput!
I TRY to keep politics off the comments, now(my latest joke doesn’t count, ALL politicians lie). I learned from experience that alot of guys just aren’t here for that. :|

Plus, Didn’t a TA(he who shall not be named) disappear not to long ago over politically charged comments. :?:

Ahem, Yeah, The Forum is a GREAT idea :!: ;-)

    Hello logischabbaubar,
I agree with you as even the most innocent topics about life can irritate people and cause discontent. Even minor debates about religion and politics have broken up long term friendships. In this medium of the written word without body language, it makes it even more challenging not to offend people.

Even in the context of personal challenges, I have noticed that many of the regular subscribers to this site have opened up their souls in very intimate ways that, as one commenter on the HFW Forum alluded to, they might not open up in this way to their partner. Unfortunately, some people don’t know the difference and have attacked those people.

So, I want to say to those people who have bared their souls on this site, I appreciate reading your comments and the sharing of your struggles. I don’t want to embarrass any of you by mentioning your names, but I want to let you know that I really appreciate your comments.

Words are powerful and carry emotions for some people. There are some topics in the HotForWords Forum that deal with that subject matter such as the topic on “the power of words” and several others.

Bob I tried to talk about things like this when I first joined Marina’s site. But I was quickly chastised by a few that thought the site should stay away from religious beliefs and politics. It pissed me off and I stayed away for awhile only to come back and learn not to take things to seriously and over look criticism. I learned from BillyB and Bob two men I hold dear as mentors to ignore some comments toward me and keep with my ideas and thoughts. Maybe we can start a forum just to discuss religion and politics. ;-)

I agree completely. I think it is okay to introduce a topic in the main site; if it continues, then move on to a side room. Many people here (and this is what fascinates me most about this site) can discuss some very opposing ideas, but each is respectful. Beevee (for example) has some political ideas that are very strange to me at first, but after some discussion and thought, they make some sense. These are the interactions that help me the most. I have little interest in discussing a topic when someone else believes the same things I do. Where is the fun in that?

Let’s keep those creative and insightful juices flowin’, man!
