Bollox! I could bollix my brain in vain over this one! I have absolutely no idea about what that deadly thing can be!

  • tomforwords

Can you please do the term Black mail?

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/capman911 Capman911

It could be a custom Harley facing off against that crotch rocket you call a bike.

  • goldspeaker

I think I am spoiled by all the blunderbussing going on down there! My answer: heedlessgat.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/capman911 Capman911

Let me help you out tomforwords. Marina likes word requests put in [ ]. So you want to suggest [Black mail]. That way she can use the search feature in her Dashboard to find words just by typing in the [ ] and find words to look up. Peace friend.

  • neuroway

Bah! Piece of cake! There’s always a possibility to jump over a custom harley or a little deer. Facing off a Mack truck or a full grown moose would be a little more touchy for sure though.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/capman911 Capman911

    I’m going with stampede

  • http://www.theendoftheinternet.com/ Chemikal

I’m gonna think out loud, I’ll move to the back of the class so I don’t disturb.
    So… wow, what’s wow?
    Oh I know… World of Warcraft! :-)
So what’s deadly in there? A lot of things… but what deadly weapon is there that’s composed of two words one happening when careless, and another was a sound in nature, presently meaning gun.
Must be the Deadly Blunderbuss. But wait, buss doesn’t sound very natural, what’s up? … searching….
Ooohh, so it was originally Donderbus, so it must be donder, or thunder that Marina pointed out with reference in nature.
    OK, but buss? …more searching…
So it’s kiss! Huh, funny because that is something natural and it does seem to imitate the sound one makes when kissing. Not so much, but that’s why we say kiss today and not buss. :-)
Alright, I think this mystery is solved, off to bed I go.
Too bad I’m having trouble sleeping. I’ll probably be asleep after a cool hour before I finally decide to kick it. I rarely feel tired before the late hours of the night. Even now it’s 3:25 AM and I’m still writing on here. I really need to get me some rest.

Heck, you gotta good point here, Capman. As Evel Knievel once said, somewhere in the sixties, the crash’n jump technique is not totally vulture-proof, especially above sixty miles per hour.

  • http://www.theendoftheinternet.com/ Chemikal

    [whoops]
    [oops]
Why do we say those words when committing a blunder, or even a small mistake?
It seems to have world wide popularity…

  • greatestpotential

I go with the word stampede. Just recently there was that running of the bulls and someone got gored and died, first casuality in many years. Loud noise, a rushing sound, stampede. The words stump, stumble, etc. surely relate to the root word of stampa. Just have to figure out the other part now.

Please don’t pick me for some sleep, it wouldn’t be fair because I cheated by looking. HA!

For some reason I was thinking about all the interviews Marina does AND all the guys that do the interviewing. When its a video interview you can totally tell when the interviewer is taken back by her brains and beauty. He tends to fumble and lose all train of thought.
If were ever to interview Marina I’m pretty sure it would go a little something like this. If you need a laugh take a looksee. Definitely click worthy. ;-)

    Dear Marina,
You got the Roman numeral for 18 right. It is XVIII. Be careful for number 19, which the Romans wrote as XIX.
So the prize you will send is a case of Neurosleep? I really want to sleep with you, but now I realize you have a way to make sure I get a good night’s rest, instead of sleeping with you!
My guess is the your word is Blunderbuss.
When you showed the photos of knives, I thought you might be referring to the combiation sword-pistols devised in France in the 18th Century. A flintlock pistol was attached to the sword, so the user could point the sword and fire the pistol. If he missed, then he would use the sword.
I hope you get lots of YouTube traffic with you GTW Game!

  • hs4mm

I think this is not the correct answer, but of all the wrong answers this is the best I could come up with!: ram-rod. Rod for gun is clear.

OED gives 6 noun and 3 verb meanings for ram. The inital part of the v3 entry is: “Brit. /ram/, U.S. /ræm/, Irish English /ræm/ [Euphemistic alteration of DAMN v., after RAM v.1 Compare earlier RAMMEE int.] {dag}1. trans. To curse or swear at, using the word ‘rammee’ (cf. DAMN v. 6). Obs” and RAMMEE entry starts with: “[Euphemistic alteration of DAMME int., after RAM v.1 Compare slightly later RAM v.3] “. So, in some convoluted way, ram has a link to a shortened from of damn me! But what about sound found in nature?

  • generalelement

I would like to request the phrase [Nothing ventured, nothing gained]. I see that you haven’t done it yet, and it is a very common phrase.

  • http://calling-muggins.blogspot.com/ muggins

Marina, uTube must be hanging on by just a string. How easy and nice your site is, compared to uTube’s. YouTube’s text response program has the functionality of a hand-me-down from Windows 95. Plus there’s always strange things lurking on each page, like for example, directly below your uTube video is a thin, yellow box that sez, “This is a video response to Put diapers on me?” I mean, that paints an interesting picture, but I’m not certain you intended that to be there. Or did I miss the diaper lesson?

  • http://wired.reddit.com/sexygeeks_2008/?s=top pedanticKarl

    Yes, you missed getting pampered
as in diapers. See previous
    lesson.

  • amosfella

I would take a guess. Howitzer

  • http://calling-muggins.blogspot.com/ muggins

Oh. The titles of the lessons are not identical between uTube and Hotforwords, and that accounts for my confusion…partially, anyhow. And that’s cool.. But, how is Latest Lesson – GTW Game 18 a response to lesson Put diapers on me? :?: All I’m axing is, YouTube is a widely popular website, and there are functionality problems with it, and they don’t have the resources to get their ducks in a row? They have adverts layered on top of each downloaded vid.

BTW- hyuk, hyuk, somebody voted thumbs down to my response over there. I guess folks get depressed when people enter a house and complain of the smell. I really oughtn’t to do that. Pointing stuff out like I do, sends folks into downwardly spiraling depressions.

I hope you eventually got as good a sleep as I had, though, if I solved the conundrum in my sleep, I don’t recall the answer.
I like your reasoning – I too got as far as World of Warcraft but, not knowing anything about the game, got stuck there.

Hi! I would like to know the origin of the word “touché”. I think it’s French and it as something to do with fighting with swords… But that’s all I know…

So…I’ll be waiting for new videos and keep beautiful ;-)

  • http://mentalgrammarhasbeensetup.blogspot.com äläx

i thought about this. my answer is: huh?

  • http://wired.reddit.com/sexygeeks_2008/?s=top pedanticKarl

Hey muggins, I gave you another up vote, so you have three thumbs up now. Yeah, the YT comment system is messed up. Even with the enabling of all comments and going through them, I have seen a lot of screwy things over there.

  • http://calling-muggins.blogspot.com/ muggins

I think I looked at that “up or down” tally incorrectly. No one as yet has voted against it. The number sitting by the down-turn thumb was really just the number of positives, not the number of down-turned thumbs. I’ve been drinking wine. So, now I can go sleep off my drunken stupor and feel better that I didn’t bum anyone out…so far.
And by god, pendanticKarl, your response showed up in the correct location. However, earlier last evening, I got a response in another video that failed to be listed like that. Erratic. I would prefer they use the response system that Marina uses. And widen that comment box.

Without too much ceremony, I’m gonna say Blunderbuss. Not so sure why you’d say wow, but then, I guess you’ve never really seen one fired. Lots of noise and smoke, and some power close up, but no range, or accuracy to think of. Still, good word.

    Dear Marina,
Here is a word request: [euphemism].

For example, “I want to sleep with you” actually means “I want to make tender, intense love to you.

A euphemism is the substitution of a polite phrase or saying in place of an unpleasant or sexual meaning. It’s derived from two ancient Greek words, “Eu”, which means “good”, and “pheme”, which means a sound or part of speech. So, “euphemism” means “good speaking.”

Other examples are “the pill” which refers to a birth control medicine, and “reaching first base” which means to have a first date.

Well, one quick search and I have already found it.. Holnest is in Sherborne about 5 miles away from where I live. As it’s in Sherborne I guess it’s quite old as Wimborne is 1300 years old and there are mentions of one of the Kings of England buried in our church being killed in Sherborne, so I guess that it is very old, and still exists. You are wrong about the county. Hampshire and Wiltshire are next to Dorset and Holnest is in Dorset, but I would say more it’s closer to Wiltshire than Hampshire. But I think the reason for this is because a long time ago Dorset was smaller, and was more under Hampshire, but then it expanded, I am not certain, but I think it might be why it is listed as Hampshire. If you need anything else just let me know, and I can do some more digging for you.

James, you’re a stout fellow. Thank you very much for that. I knew that the boundaries had changed because when I lived in the New Forest, all of Bournemouth was in Hampshire until they started [gerrymandering] all the counties and Dorset expanded as far as Chewton Bunny between Highcliffe & New Milton.
That’s why I was looking in the area that had swapped identities and never thought to look on the other side of the county.
Still, it’s difficult to understand why the census recorder would make such a gross error.
Thanks anyway and thanks for the offer of further help if I need it. Much appreciated.

    Hi Captain Jack,
    No super computer required.
Even videos over 3G work great on my
iPhone. At home I keep thinking I have
2 or 4 GB RAM, but, I only have 1 GB
and I can watch mulyiple videos with
no problems. The key is having a decent
video card, video memory and not running
    any background programs.

The average person that I help has
    anywhere from 60-100 background
tasks running, most of them eating
memory and cpu resources. I have
less than 25 tasks running in the
background. Also, many systems aren’t tweaked right.

(You’re laffing, right Marina? Do they have any anti-delusional drinks? )

Anyway, I thought this was a very good guess the word game which was really not that easy. The first word was easy as I got thunder right away and thought the second word might be bolt as in thunderbolt which is also deadly.

But, then taking into account the words blunder with thunder and the meaning of gun, the word started to formulate as blunder something. I had a tough time relating bus to pipe and rod referring to a gun and the fact that you gave the clue, that the second word means gun, helped a lot. Since I knew about a blunderbuss, that made it easier to narrow down the various choices to that word.

So, I’m still having issues with the word bus / buss, but I’ll vote for blunderbuss.

OK, now lets rock out with some AC-DC Thunderstruck
I can hear them singing blunderbuss.

Marina, I have just realised something that could mean you loose out on a lot of your ad revenue.

The YouTube new channel layout means when you click someones video on the channel page, it plays it on the channel. This means because people will be playing your videos on your main page, that the actual page where the comments are will not be displayed, meaning people will not be seeing the ads, only the ones in the videos, which are pointless because they are advertising while you are watching something you want to watch. If I was a partner I wouldn’t have them on the vid because they are pointless and distracting. My main point is that because people won’t be automatically directed to your videos actual page you will loose out on ad revenue and be relying on the in-video ads to make money. Soon I think YT will realise this and post a bullshit blog saying that it will go back to the video page to make things more user friendly like they always do. But, it will take YT time to realise they are loosing out on money before they do anything. So I think you might need to work out on some ways to increase your revenue.

I hope all works out, I don’t want to see things go bad for you.

St. John’s wort is a popular herb for depression and insomnia. Herbalists also recommend the herb for relieving chronic nerve pains like peripheral neuropathy, and for trauma and injuries involving nerve damage. St. John’s wort has long been used for bedwetting of children. The herb is also valuable used externally for reducing inflammation and the pain of scrapes, bruises, strains, burns, and other trauma.

    The Lie Clock

A man died and went to heaven.
As he stood in front of St. Peter at the Pearly Gates, he saw a huge wall of clocks behind him.
He asked, ‘What are all those clocks?’
St. Peter answered, ‘Those are Lie-Clocks. Everyone on Earth has a Lie- Clock. Everytime you lie the hands on your clock will move.’
‘Oh,’ said the man, ‘whose clock is that?’
‘That’s Mother Teresa’s. The hands have never moved, indicating that she never told a lie.’
‘Incredible,’ said the man. ‘And whose clock is that one?’
St. Peter responded, ‘That’s Abraham Lincoln’s clock. The hands have moved twice, telling us that Abe told only two lies in his entire life.’
‘Where’s President Obamas clock?’ asked the man.
Obama’s clock is in Jesus’ office. He’s using it as a ceiling fan.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the practice of putting white balls and black balls in a container to vote whether a person should be accepted as a new member of a group, etc. That is where blackballed came from, so may an oddball is similar.

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

The problem of having someone scratch your back is that they use their fingers, which is not stimulating enough to truly satisfy the itch; it feels good, but when they get done, you still need more. The same thing happens with one of those back scratchers made to resemble a hand on a long arm.

To truly satisfy the itch, you need something like a hair brush; the many bristles really get the job done. I use a Hartz Mountain pet brush, which, if it had a foot-long handle would be perfect. (The ones I have are all black plastic and are no longer available; they have been replaced with newer models, which I haven’t tried.)

Hey there Marina. I was wondering… Where did the word [Arachnid] come from? Did some scientist just came up with it from no-where? r was it named after an ancient god/godess, or something?

A blast of cold wind rattled my window. I thought it was a burglar so I reached in my desk drawer and pulled out my trusty heater for protection.
Good thing it wasn’t a [ BLAST HEATER ] . I hear those things could cook you quick if you came face to face with one.

Hey, guys just want to let you know that vulgar terms are legitimate and on the table as they are part of the language and therefore fair game in the world of etymology.

Those kinds of discussions go back to the Butterfly video.

In fact, in the original video SNAFU (May 10, 2008), Marina and Marina’s sister used the F word without bleeps. It is an awesome video. However, there were some issues with YT and the advertiser if I remember, so Marina pulled that video and uploaded with bleeps, which can be seen here.
    http://www.hotforwords.com/2008/05/10/snafu/

Lucky me, I still have the original unexpurgated version.
I agree with Marina and many others that bleeping out words and text just doesn’t cut it.

  • darlingj

    Totally agree with you Karl…

‘You kan’ seems odd to me…but that’s just me…

Another clip from La Revue Des Revues. Josephine Baker strutting her stuff… Not the original sound. 1927…moon-landing 4 a moon-child, is it because the moon is seen during the day?

  • Venomrock67

Well I’ll be, Snafu, I’ve heard that word and never really new the meaning and I even have that cartoon on a looney toons dvd collection. So technically she’s done a lesson for the F-word, I had a feeling Marina couldn’t be uptight about certain things and you’re probably right about YT and the advertisers. fuckenay

    Thanks Karl
