Well I never had and don’t think I ever will. It is good to help people repair damage from accidents or burns  (accidents). Wow I have never been this early.

    Wow!!! Great video Marina.
    Learned something new again.
    No plastic molding for me.

  • greatestpotential

 What time is it? I haven’t really thought about plastic surgery but I think cosmetic surgery sounds less creepy :!:

I wouldn’t just to enhance my features. I am who I am and I’m comfortable with that. I had two past girlfriends that had boob jobs. After seeing the pain they went through, I think I will pass on any “enhancing” of my body thank you!

Yes, I am so excited for you.

I’d say it depends on the circumstances…

If there’s a genuine medical reason, e.g. to repair the damage caused by burns; then definitely yes.

If it’s to correct a perceived disfigurement (compared to society at large) e.g. cleft palate, birthmark, or a lump/bump; then probably.

If it’s for pure vanity e.g. bigger busts, smaller abdomen, fewer facial wrinkles; then definitely no.

  • folks

I like how I look and don’t see how plastic surgery could improve me. I like plastic surgery that takes the people that aren’t socially normal and makes them look like everyday folk.

P.S. The only beef I have against my body is my inability to tan. Damn my Norwegian/Russian heritage.

    Sincerely,
    Matt

  • danistan

I would not consider plastic surgery for myself and I find it unattractive in people I consider dating. In general, (with the exception of reconstructive procedures) it seems like a waste of valuable resources that could go toward public health problems with a much more meaningful impact, but I’m not sure there exists any normative institution that could justly prevent it from happening, and it wouldn’t be just for people seeking cosmetic surgery should be subjected to the poor standards that such an adjustment would entail (i.e. poorly trained or unlicensed surgeons).

  • frank_in_milwaukee

Since having an “extreme makeover” has become trendy, I’m thinking of having my lower lip removed- for beauty. Just kidding. The trend of discouraging others to value how they look has become a socially endemic problem. You could even say that the proponents of plastic surgery are tendentious. Unfortunately, these problems are nothing that can be resolved by anything but introspection – and a chance to carefully examine plastic surgery mishaps…

  • irishknight

A wet morning in Ireland … to spoil the Irish Open Golf tournament. I trust its much better in Cannes.

    Consider the uses of plastic,
    The term is really elastic,
    From spending your money,
    To flattening your tummy,
But really the latter is drastic.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/smokey36bear smokey36bear

HomeworkNo I would not get plastic surgery. And it is a good thing if it helps a bad thing if it does to you what it did to Kenny Rogers.

  • stealth

It actually comes from the greek word “Πλάθω” which means when you take something like clay (mud) and transform it into another thing.
    Thats from me cu.

Just for the record I thing that everyone should respect themselves as they are , and not take plastic surgery to become something they arent , also difference is what makes us attractive isn’t it?

    Πλάθω = Mold *

*From google translator but it still cannot be translated exactly in English.

I love these HotForWords video lessons that refer to either Latin or Greek roots or words and I love it especially when you identify heteronyms and eponyms and the like.

I never studied either language, but have it on my to do list along many other languages. I read someplace several years ago when I was researching word origins in Central Europe that perhaps the Greek origin of words is more common than what might normally be suggested by dictionaries and historical references.

In other words, did a particular Greek word influence a word or did the Latin word come first. It seems that I have observed where a particular word is credited by having Greek roots, but another dictionary or reference book will attribute Latin as the source of the origin.

I guess it depends on the word and the circumstance. Different professions seem to take their lexicon from Latin where others seem to focus on Greek.

I love these lessons. I’m always learning something new.

    Good morning Captain Jack,

“that” can be a pronoun, adjective or an adverb and is used as a conjunction used to introduce a subordinate clause as the subject or object of the principal verb. It has some interesting origins from Middle English and Old English thæt.

    Kewl, huh?

Wow! This was a good lesson on the origin of the word plastic surgery.
I always thought “plastic” surgery was originally a
corrupted form of the word rhinoplasty, but then,
I only had to watch South Park to figure that out.
Marina has big hairy ones to put this lesson up!
As a fan, I really liked it

  • http://captainjack.ws Captain Jack

Homework: I was so very against plastic surgery I didn’t want to even know anyone that had it. But now that I have been watching the TV show ‘The Doctors’ I’ve been warming up to the idea. I’m actually thinking about getting some work done. Though I fear doctors. I guess I have the same fears as other doctors that them selfs have. Many of my relatives that had botched surgeries. If I ever go under the knife again I’m going to do an extensive review of the doctor. He or she will have to convince me that they know what they are doing and how they are going to do it.

One thing that puzzles me about today’s society: while discussing topics such as mastectomy and breast implants there is no mention of the affect of either on the woman’s sexual experience; people sell mattresses but never mention any features these might have to enhance sex! Weird times we live in!

  • logischabbaubar

Sometimes you can watch women who have got real monster breasts (that are neither beautiful nor sexy by the way) by plastic surgery or watch doctors giving teen a breast enlargement way too early. I think the medical associations should impose some stricter ethical standards for plastic surgery and get them enforced.

Plastic surgery is good when used to cure deformities in children, or people after an accident. Young children wear braces to straighten misaligned teeth. Some girls got nose jobs to make their noses smaller and improve their looks.
On the bad side, there are women who get their breasts enlarged, men who get their penis lengthened, and people of both genders who get hair implants and other facial surgery. I think they’re just wasting money.

So, did anyone notice anything about Marina’s smile?
Her characteristic slightly moved forward two teeth have been moved back in line with the other teeth. The GeekOut pictures show the same new teeth. Marina Twittered about a broken tooth later. I hope it wasn’t due to eating with a fork. Those things are dangerous.

I think the only reason she corrected the front teeth is so that people wouldn’t think we were brother and sister. Good move Marina. LOL We share some similar features. Someone else mentioned that the other day.

One of the best run international charities in the world is a PLASTIC SURGERY PROGRAM TO REPAIR CLEFT PALLETS IN CHILDREN who live in developing countries. I have been donating money, as I can, for years and I know the money is going to help real people who need it! Any amount will help these kids (in Bolivia, kids like this must wear bags on their heads so nobody sees them). Please support programs like this or any other. My own sister just got back from being a nurse in Ghana. That charity did orthopedic surgery. Every little bit helps. We’re so lucky we can live as we do, healthy and wealthy and wise :-) be happy you’re whole! Seeing the before-after pictures of smiling children will make your day SO much happier! Thank you (and Marina) for letting me post this. Seeing you on the Riviera made me remember this program….and how lucky we all are…nobody makes us wear bags on our ugly heads!

Cosmetic plastic surgery, in moderation, is a good thing. A minor alteration can make a big difference. I had to visit the maxillofacial plastics unit in hospital to fix an embarrassing looking scar that curiously resembled a minuscule quim.

I kid you not! I can laugh about it now, but at the time I didn’t want to go out.

Plastic surgery is vital if someone has undergone complete facial reconstruction because of a birth defect, disease or serious injury. I’ve heard of a case where plastic & maxillofacial surgery helped someone who completely lost his facial identity due to an accident.

My “part of the world” is Western Washington State. I wouldn’t bother getting plastic surgery, I prefer to age naturally. I think that plastic surgery has become the insecure craze now a days, and that it’s not necessary unless for medical reasons.

Speaking of plastic surgery, I just recently rented former Miss USA Kelli McCarty’s porn movie “Faithless” out of curiosity. Now I’m no botox or plastic surgery expert, but her face is tight in some areas that it looks like she has had some work done. I don’t even know if it’s really all that appealing.
Now as for her career choice… well….. it was better than working on that cheesy soap opera “Passions”. In her adult film, she has pretty much done just about everything (as well as everything done to her), except for swallowing. I’m trying not to sound insulting about her, but there is a small opinion in the back of my mind that can’t help but think, “Stupid girl”.

I generally am not a fan of plastic surgery, however in cases where appearance is disfigured from birth defect, accident, or disease, etc., it can be a good thing. Call me sexist, but I would say that a very flat woman would fall under the category of birth defect. However, she would really need to be quite flat chested (i.e., cup size A) for me to agree that it would be a good thing.

As for myself, I prefer a woman who is naturally large breasted to a woman who is surgically enhanced. Sorry, Marina.

    Hi there,
I have always been interested in etymology, but you make it even better than before!

I was recently re-watching the movie “The Fugitive” and the US Marshalls were discussing (at the courthouse) the word [hinkie]. I haven’t poked around to find out the definition on purpose, just so that I could ask you. I look forward to hearing about it from you!

Also, in the game of volleyball when someone gets hit in the face with a spike it’s called a [six pack]. There are some anecdotal and apocryphal suggestions as to why, but I’d like to see what you come up with.

    Thanks!

Sifting through your videos and enjoying the out takes.. something occurred to me.. why the censoring of “swear” words.. and then, why are they considered bad. So, as I’m sure lots of people are interested in the origin of this word, not many are willing to request it.. to be honest, I don’t expect this one to be done as 90% of the lesson would be censor blips hehe.. but, here is the word.. (censored for obvious reasons)
    [f**k]
I’ve actually had lengthy talks with my friends about the origins and implications of this word, but would like to see someone who actually goes into history of language to find the origin.

Homework: If a person has a facial or a body issue that looks abnormal, or if their livelihood depends on their looks, I think plastic surgery is good. However, some people take it too far and that’s bad. As for me, I wouldn’t consider it because I don’t meet either of my stated criteria.

PS: Go Wings! (Red Wings that is – I live near Detroit)

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

Why are dirty words considered dirty? I have wondered about that all my life. There have been words you can’t say on TV and then, overnight, it is OK. For example, ass. One night I saw Letterman and they had this little RC car that was in the shape of a canned ham. It said BIG ASS HAM on the can, and from that time on (although I don’t know if that episode had anything to do with it), the word has been on the air.

What happened to make ass OK?
    Who decided it was OK?
Is there a list of dirty words that “they” are working on making OK?
Is there someone watching society carefully and then they come to the meeting and say, “OK, today’s the day; we’re releasing ass today.”?
Could you make a timeline showing which dates in history which words became OK?
Is there a list of words we consider dirty (or at least tainted) that have been, nevertheless, been OK all along?

When the F word becomes OK, will we have to invent a new word to take it’s place, or is that even possible? Freaking was invented as a temporary substitute until the F word becomes OK, just like heck substituted for hell. Are there any other temporary words in use, or is the F word just soooo bad that it is the only one currently having a temporary substitute? BS is used for shit, but that is not quite the same.

Speaking of abbreviations, I have noticed a lot of them on TV lately. It’s OK to say BFD, but that assumes the viewer will know what it stands for. WTF is used in print, but I have never heard anyone speak the intials.

Oh, this topic is endlessly fascinating, because (I think), it is all about rules that nobody cares to specify, and, if they did, how would they obtain the authority to be the, uh, authority on the subject? Perhaps we need a Bureau of Filthy Language that simply lists everything on their Website, thus eliminating any doubt (and fun). Everyone would simply check the site and know if it was OK. Anyone who objected to hearing the word would simply be told, “Hey, it’s on the Website. It’s OK now. Get used to it.” And that would be that. If that was the way it was, what would happen when all the words were finally on the OK list and there were no more dirty words left?

I hope everyone will chime in on this topic, you sock-sucking ferps. (Did I say that out loud? )

Let X equal M’s workload. If there are N languages and straying were to be allowed, then her workload would be NX. It’s just too much. We can’t even get all the words everyone wants done in English, can we? So, no straying.

How about stripping instead? Stripping is good. M could set up a comprehensive test where you would have to demonstrate a good grasp of the material in all the existing lessons. Then you would be E-mailed a password that would allow you to see that video one time. I predict there would be a lot of A’s issued*.

Not bad.. but it doesn’t really show how the word, taken from friken (however it’s spelled), had it’s connotation changed so drastically.. I know when I hear “f you”, they’re not saying “I’m going to hit you” :)

And, why is the f word one of english’s worst word as far as “bad language” goes?

People put so much meaning into words (and I do mean SO MUCH) that the word itself no longer really has any meaning itself as the implication of the word. If people would stop implying meanings instead of using real meanings then a lot of our “bad” words would just be, well, words.

So the term ‘plastic surgery’ is apropos to what it denotes. If there’s been any confusion over it, it’s most likely due to people thinking of the oil by-product that is so common in modern life.

Plastic surgery is most definitely a good thing. It allows people to look the way they’d like to look. It enhances beauty if done right. It helps many actresses and actors look their best for their work. And, most importantly in my eyes, it really helps people with whatever self esteem issues they may have had with their appearance. I wouldn’t have plastic surgery myself, but I’ve learned that it is important to respect what matters to somebody else, and most everybody’s appearance matters to them. Last but not least, the reconstructive type of plastic surgery is a very, very good thing that helps people that are in tragic situations as far as their appearance goes due to accident or ailment.

On a personal note, I can’t say I’ve ever been romantically involved with a woman who has had plastic surgery, and I live in L.A., the capitol of cosmetic enhancement. Truth is, it’s never been a factor to me one way or the other… haven’t sought it out, haven’t avoided it. I feel a woman is all real whether she’s been enhanced or not, so it is truly not on the radar when it comes to women I am attracted to. It’s one of my gentleman/womanizer rules to value a woman in her entirety (mentally and physically), that femininity is a state of mind, and if you are focusing on just one aspect of her over another, you are missing the big picture. Intelligence is sexy, and women are just as hot mentally as they are physically. That’s what makes the feminine mystique so awesome, the combination of what a woman is inside and out.

Peace and love, Errin : )

However, if a lady decided to get plastic surgery after a mastectomy so that she would feel more complete, I could understand that. But people like Cher, Michael Jackson or Dolly Parton…that, to me, is wrong

You can just Google her nude leak, there a variety of sites that show her cell phone pics for free (…along with Chris Brown with her panties on his head???).
I’m not sure whether or not Marina would like anyone posting links to nude photos on her site. You’re just going to have to look around, it’s not hard to find. Just be careful not to go to harmful sites and that you have good internet security.

I find the word [patronize] to be interesting because its meaning is completely different depending on the context of use.

Heh, thanks, but I was just joshing. I haven’t even seen Pamela and Tommy’s private tape footage, I respect their privacy. If they put out a news spot and said it was something they wanted everyone to see, then hey :!:

i agree with your statement, “aging is a natural process that we should not fear.” i think your reference to mastectomies recognizes the importance of a healthy self image to women and others in similar situations.

Yeah, I haven’t seen the Pamela and Tommy sex tape either….. That’s kind of like old news to me (and I think I was still in high school when it happened).
But I have seen the more recent ones, like Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian. As well as a few others and few fakes. And their amateur sex tapes are not…. all that great as it could (might) have been. But it is nice to look at to some extent.

  • hotforwordsdavid

Marina, Beautiful girls, like you, sometime think they can improve their look by plastic surgery. I hope you never have such thoughts.

P.S. I am very glad you didn’t put that awful Tattoo on your arm.

  • hotfor_hotforwords

I doubt I’d consider platic surgery unless it was to correct or improve upon some sort of deformity or disfigurement that caused me to avoid mirrors or breathe oddly. Or if, god forbid, I were to lose my hair (I’m fairly certain I’m safe, for the record), I know I would opt for whatever procedure best fixes that problem.

I’m not against plastic surgery for aesthetic improvement either. Especially for girls. Mankind’s relations are benefitting from enhancements just like we did from alcohol, make-up and lazer-hair-removal (razors and wax before that….don’t tell me she still shaves).

I draw the line after breast augmentation, though. Obviously guys love a nice set of jubblies to look at, touch, fondle, caress, trace, lick, suck, grab, lap at, and many other things, but we all know, girls, that you love having boobs too. Well ok, from there……ok sure a nose job or a chin shaving could be in order for some people, and that’s fine. But, now they have muscle implants? Like, you can get pecs, and buttocks implants, and calf implants? That’s just gay.

Sorry, that’s just lame. Guy or girl, no one should get these things. Breast enhancements are fine. Corrective procedures are great. It should stop there. There’s no reason we need plastic muscles on any member of either gender. Get in the gym, damn it.

  • hotfor_hotforwords

Wait, I forgot one on the OK List: lip injections. Pouty, plump lips are not to be denied.

But for all the muscle-tissue related procedures, instead just bloody workout and be active, make it your lifestyle–it’s the only way to truly improve the breed.

Ha, I can see the future now: plastic muscles of the faux-fit will confuse the news as guys who look ready to kick ass have trouble lifting grocery bags and briefcases drop dead from actual exertion. lol

  • davemarkwz

I have thoughts all across the board when I think of plastic surgery. The only
type I might consider for myself would be lyposuction. I doubt I’ll go thorugh
with it. I have met plenty of people who have had various surgeries. Benefits
and negatives vary. Lips can be overdone and breasts can come out disproportionate. It’s fantastic when it comes out right, it happens without
bad side-effects, when the person that was before still holds their core-self.
Plenty can go wrong///If successful, cheers to those who took a bold step!

  • ilikesexytime

    are your breasts real!?

  • matalexwolf

Why do plastic surgery if you don’t need it? Katie Price was perfect in every way until her bahoobas exploded! Now she regrets greatly for ever having changed. Nip here, tuck there, jab or two of poison in your face, it’s just all too easy!! Now always in need of more to keep good what ever lost its sell by date! Shame. Most people love you for who you are and not for what you look like. Only the insecure or brain washed seem to go on a witch hunt for eternal youthful appearance to please others of equal dispositions.

I can appreciate adolescent teenage boys would vote by raising one hand, for bigger Hope and Glories, for a more plastic Barbie image, but life isn’t just about pleasing the boys who, at an age, would bolt at anything that moves! They will ultimately grow older, and wiser avoiding plastic dolls, looking for more substance in that special someone! If you are really that depressed, not bored or curious or just trying to fit in, then ok try it, hope it works. Or if needed due to an injury or birth defect, sure, makes sense. But just because…well, I don’t think that’s very smart, so therefore not at all sexy!!!! Couldn’t go out with someone who just worried about looks all the time, think I would be yaaaaawning badly.

Has to be an addiction or something. Change of environment causing change of perceptions maybe. I know women who have had plenty of alterations costing a house or two but still they aren’t happy. Not surprised either, they look ridiculous, freakish and it’s very sad.

It’s almost akin to the walk of the undead – “Change, must change, my nose is not as I would like it to be….I need more botox, give me botox…..change, must change…..give me the mirror…..apply more plastic….I can’t stop smiling as my face is stuck…do you think i’m hooorny baaaby…..do I turn you on……change, must change…….and still my bum looks big in this!”

But then again; life’s too short, go like the wind, snort copious amounts of snow, live fast and cool, die young having fun, who really cares any more, why should I care any more, just do it now!

It’s a no vote from me on Plastic Surgery teach

[hentai] is a Japanese word of Welsh origin. Originally it was hen tai, “old houses,” a Welsh euphemism for brothels; hence hentai‘s association with sexual behavior.

The noted Japanese philologist Aruturo Jonzu was fascinated by Wales, the western land of the Red Dragon, and intruduced a number of Welsh terms into Japanese. Among them is gairaigo, meaning “a word borrowed from a foreign language.” This is a permutation of the Welsh gair o gi, “word of a dog,” i.e. a word borrowed from English.

It’s true, I tell you.

My only experience with plastic surgery was a girlfriend who had breast implant surgery back in the late 1980s. She had been small-breasted but trim and petite. Then she had two children whom she breast-fed. Her breasts then sagged and deflated, according to her. Next, the father of her children disappeared. She was only 28 years old at the time.

Living on her own with two small children, she became depressed about the way she looked and grew desperate to attract another man into her life and family. She decided to get breast implants, but couldn’t afford a good surgeon. Instead she found a cheap one, and the healing time was easily three times longer than other patients with similar operations. To add insult to injury, the scars below her nipples came out huge, uneven, ugly and very permanent.

So then she had these big breasts but felt even less confident about her appearance because she couldn’t show them to anyone without her disfigurement being painfully apparent. Emotionally, she was a complete mess. Also, the implants were silicone instead of the saline bags they now use in breast augmentation. The silicone hardened significantly as time went by, so they felt like bumpy rocks, not at all natural. She has probably had them removed by now, I imagine. What a horrible waste.

The lesson I learned from her experience was “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” So I probably won’t be getting plastic surgery any time in the near future. But I might get a couple new feathers to liven up my headdress, though. I’m thinking quetzal or peacock maybe…

As many of you know, when you go to Google and search on certain words, chances are that you will get a HotForWords video lesson. For example, enter antidisestablishmentarianism into a Google search, and the HotForWords lesson by that name is the 2nd search result.

Now, take the lesson above. There are three word combinations that one can search for. They are:
    1. plastic
    2. surgery
    3. plastic surgery

Can you guess which one of these three will return the above lesson as the highest ranking? My guess would be “plastic surgery”.

Theoretically, “plastic surgery” would have been the highest ranking, but because it is such as popular topic, hence lots of competition, it had the lowest ranking.

The search on the word plastic resulted in showing the above video in 9th place.

The search on the word surgery resulted in showing the above video in 12th place.

The search on the word plastic surgery resulted in showing the above video in 20th place. (search result page 2)

    Very interesting.

So someone decides to get a boob job to enhance the appearance of their clevage for whatever reason. Okay, so these people go and decide to do that and then when they do go and get a boob job done they’re told that their breasts aren’t real anymore(?) What’s up with that sort of talk? That’s like saying a push-up bra isn’t a real bra because it enhances the size and look of the boobage.

  • rijk

Plastic surgery because it was necessary after an accident, ok, but surgery to remove the wealth of somebody’s body (fat, etc) not.

I think it is immoral that in the western world there are people walking around who have become overweight because, lets face it, they ate to much and/or the wrong stuff, are gone have surgery done, to lose the wealth they gained in there consumpties lifestyle. Let them follow a weight-loss program and do exercise. With the money saved, save a lot of people in the third world and life a healthier live.
