  • seesixcm6

    Dear Marina,
I hope the temperature has gone down so that you sleep comfortably, tonight. I hope you sleep well.
I dream about you often, and they are good because you are as nice in my dreams as you are in your videos. You are happy and cheerful and you laugh at my jokes. My dreams with you have had abrupt endings. Just at the moment we are about to kiss, I get yanked away from my dream and I wake up in my own bwd, alone. I guess the lesson from these dreams are that I get to see, hear and even smell you, but I don’t get to touch! :???:
I plan to keep dreaming about you until we can do more nice things, together.

A couple of months ago, I saw an article on Yahoo that talked about ten ways of falling asleep. One of the things it mentioned is that if you have trouble falling asleep, is to place a pinch of salt on the tip of the tongue, a method that will allow you to fall asleep within 15 minutes. The theory is that the salt produces an electrical stimulus to the brain which assists with helping the brain shut down.

I haven’t been able to find the original article, but here is what looks like a similar article referencing a book by an M.D.

    It’s Hot here too. 104 degrees F

  • buzzword

dude, do you realize you just shared that bit with the rest of us?

  • greatestpotential

Well, you know there’s that band REM and how they got their name. They hadn’t decided on a name for their band and so each person wrote down a name on a sticky note, words like “everglade” “mantic” “skewbald” and a bunch of other words which they placed on their refrigerator and every morning they’d take down a sticky note until the only word left was “REM” and so they named their band that :!:

  • mukmika.

Don’t know about r.e.m.sleep, but I’d give anything to be able to sleep more than 4 hours at a time! That pinch of salt sounds like a good idea. If it’s 100 degrees, I don’t think anybody could sleep without a/c. Cheers!

    Neuro- water?
I couldn’t find any data at the site to tell me
what’s in it, or what it tastes like.
The packaging and marketing looks expensive.
I guess women would buy it, just for the bottle!
    (wink-wink-nod-nod-know-what-I-mean? ;)
Things were a lot simpler in the good old days.
At least you knew what you were paying for.

OK, so I wanted to find out about the bottle in the video lesson.
I went to Google to search “neuro sleep drink”.
The 11th search result is the video above on YouTube.

But, when I search “neuro-sleep drink” (notice the added dash),
the video above on YouTube is number 6 on the list.
    Huh, Scratching head?

  • freebird

In the “olden days”, say way back in early Egypt, they used to cook lettuce… let it cool and drink it… to put them to sleep.

Then there was that jittery rabbit in Alice in Wonderland… who drank Chamomile tea to calm down… which also helps to go to sleep.

Then there was Cheech and Chong who smoked grass to go to sleep… and they also did this after they woke up… a wake and bake!

The one Freebird uses is a look back at a single tree in a peaceful valley and Freebird is sitting under it. There is an open book on his crossed legs with white light and doves flying out of it… holding on to this visual eventually puts him to sleep.

You really sleep with your feet outside the covers? I would not be able to sleep that way — the temperature difference between my feet and the rest of my body and difference of the weight bearing down on my feet and on the rest of my body would keep me awake!

  • hs4mm

I knew a guy in college who kept a bottle of chloroform in his room — his method of falling asleep was to take a whiff of chloroform and become unconscious.

My favorite way to go to sleep is to put my head down on the pillow. It works instantly.

  • Jeorney

I normally drift into sleep quickly. Slipping into an irregular sleep pattern or burning the midnight oil, can be occasionally problematic. The inner clock gets messed up and sleep can lose some of its value. Getting back into the proper cycle can be a nightmare. I get around it by forcing myself to skip sleep, and face bouts of practically narcoleptic sleep during the day.

Lately, my head hits the pillow pondering on my design for a small prefab cabin, made from 2×6′s and plywood, roughly in the shape of half a hexagonal. The top of the roof would be flat where I’d build a hot house, but I don’t get all that far with the design. Usually, I frame the cabin and then apply the plywood to the frame, ruminate about about the “whats” and “whereabouts” of the ladder to the roof. By that time, I drift off to sleep, perchance to dream of a certain Russian blonde.

As it goes, in NATURE there are mostly 2 kind of animals, predators and pray.
The sad fact of life is that in order to survive, life MUST take LIFE!!
So as the world revolves, times of light and shadow dominates the planet.
To make things more interesting, predators wander around hunting for pray at night , when the creatures are at their most vulnerable moment.
Because theyre are not so well adapted to see in the dark, They must pass as,invisible as they may, becoming unmoving, slowing down breading patterns , and lowering body temperature , to produce less noise and sent.
BUT THEY NEED TO BE ALERT!!!!
Normal sleep is just that: waiting to light to come back, but we do not rest as we are in this state of inmovility and frantic , despair.
We may be as alert as anybody awake, awaking at the slightest noise in the room, answering at a question asked to us quite immediately…
So, the question is , when DO we rest?
In between this 8 hours of laziness, there are few moments , too precious to be left unnoticed.
This are the moments were all posible house cleaning by the brain( on a computer you may call it defragging, ),and all toxins and pollutants are take care off.Endorphins are released( same as you laugh , have sex, or sports), and all this MUST be done, as We are at our MOST BULNERABLE MOMENT!!!!!
If we get awaken, we cannot run, or talk, or defend our self….
That’s way is SO important for us to be SECURED.
WE will NOT have REM, as we are disturbed by noise and light!!!!
The most efficient way to get your rest is…
    Isolate yourself from it……
Dark room( or as Marina does it , with a eye protector),ear plugs, or cotton, and if you can sleep alone( other people in your bed may distract you!!! ).
    Hope it may help!!!

I’m taking a course on liinguistics and the subject came up of the article [a]; and since no one in the class is a native English speaker we need somebody to settle this for us:
When do you pronounce the word /a/ and when is it /ei/? Does it have to do with the word it is modifying (i.e. it changes depending of the lenght or the sound of the word), a certain emphasis the speaker wants to give (and in that case, is it to emphasize the singleness of the modified word or what?), or is it just a regional thing?

I know this is a bit too technical for the show, but I thought that if somebody could help us out it would be you.

REM is essential for memory consolidation. It is thought that the rapid firing of neurons in the dream state, enhances long term long term potentiation (LTP), which is the foundation of memory (the more you use a neuronal connection, the stronger the connection becomes).

There is an interesting twist to the story surrounding the controversy at a recent beauty pageant, wherein a contestant has been villified for understanding the meaning of the word [marriage], by gay activist Perez Hilton, and others. Hot For Words must investigate! Parallel to the investigation of this word, the word [union] should also be sourced to it’s origin, to serve that gay people may better understand the meanings of words, and learn tolerance, when people resist their wanton attempts to distort word meanings, to better put forward a political agenda. This story clearly serves as an example of why the word “gay” is used to describe stupid people and ideas.
My intention in this request is to open a frank, and friendly, discussion that may lead to better understanding by those who cannot accept the meanings of words as they are defined.

How were we able to drink up the sea? Who gave us the sponge to wipe away the entire horizon? What did we do when we unchained the earth from the sun? Whither is it moving now? Whither are we moving now? Away from all suns? Are we not perpetually falling? Backward, sideward, forward, in all directions? Is there any up or down left? Are we not straying as through an infinite nothing? Do we not feel the breath of empty space? Has it not become older? Is it not more and more night coming on all the time? Must not lanterns be lit in the morning?

I just put the door on a cedar lined, walnut antique armoire I salvaged (in pieces) and restored.
The wood veneers have beautiful figures…
The figures in the wood, on the side facing my bed, look like large, well formed women’s breasts – totally awesome!
One original panel, and the original door was missing, so I had to create ‘em from scratch. I had to search awhile to get stock from the same period. The match is perfect…
The original walnut finish was royal purple, the cedar was anil blue; but I’m leaving it natural.
I’ve had offers of $8-12 G’s (w/o the door) as it sits but, I won’t sell it. I plan to “buzz bomb” it with 17 coats of laquer finish, which takes time. When complete, it’ll have a piano finish and be worth around $34 G’s (insured value).

  • pennsyltucky9

    Greetings mrsrabbit,

If you wish to use it in reference to the first letter of the alphabet, as in “The letter A,” call it by its LONG sound: “ei.” When including it as a word (the article “a,” as in “I saw a cat”), it is generally accepted to employ a schwa-like sound, similar to “uh” or “ah” instead. This is the convention because it is faster and requires less tongue involvement. In some instances, one will hear the article pronounced as “ei” when the singularity of the noun which follows it is the specific concept to be stressed, as in “I’m not talking about a (uh) pack of dogs, just a (ei) dog.” In my view, these cases are fairly rare.

But generally, it’s a very short word, so it tends to be used in the way that’s easiest to pronounce during rapid speech. In other words, it gets pronounced lower and further back in the mouth when used in a sentence such as “A (uh) cat walked across the street.” But the long “A” sound would be used to refer to the alphabetical name designation if the cat were to walk across State Highway A1A (ei-one-ei), for example. Does that make any sense?

As a former linguistics student and a native speaker of American English, that’s my impression. I hope it helps answer your question.

It’s an African reference to a spirit (or multiple spirits) of the dead, particularly when a living person has invited it or them to cause trouble for others who are still alive (this is usually seen as an evil sorcery-type interaction). Pretty sure it derives from the Khoi-San language group, but I could be wrong about that. There are one helluva lot of language groups found on the African continent.

I built an illegal transmitter that bled all over the AM bandwidth (when I was 13).

I kept it up on my own until the FCC tracked me down! LOL! I almost got seriously busted, and Frank? He got his Dad to let him start a little show for a few hours on Sunday nights called “Jelly Pudding”. Basically, the same format we came up with while playing around. Does 102.7 FM WEBN still play the good music? I got my start doing the pyro at Riverfest. My first job was doing the fountains of falling stars (waterfall) off the L&N bridge. I still do freelance for Zambelli down here. One year, for the kite fly in, I built a Marconi kite, and it was the only one that flew! It was a unique design, tailless, twin diamonds with a rudder.
I ran it up where it caught the breeze, once it was above the bridge deck, and it just hung out, tacking in the breeze. I made it using clear plastic, Put the logo on it in mylar, it just looked like the letters WEBN flying. I got $100 for it!

If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he will accept it even on the slightest evidence. The origin of myths is explained in this way.

This can be explained by the fact that instincts deal with feelings. Neither of them are logical or related to reason. Some say dangerous is the man who has rationalized his emotions. Others say dangerous is the man who has not rationalized his emotions.

A balanced person won’t need a whole lot of proofs to believe in something and accept it as a valid and plausible assumption, but won’t really believe in or accept something fuzzy without any proofs. Unbalanced individuals will never believe anything they don’t like, or will believe everything they like.

    Absolutely, enjoying it.
It has been sitting for the last five years waiting for me to to put the finishing touches to it. I had got it to the point where it was looking good, and was using it with a tempo plywood door I had rigged. Finding 150 year old walnut center cut and fiddleback veneer stock was tricky. I uncovered a source in Vermont via a mutual friend, and traded some Duncan Phyfe furniture bits I saved. I also have a couple matching mahogany “pie crust” lamp tables I restored, from the same period. I restored them to the original royal purple, laquer finish and they look great, along with the armoire.
If you watch any Antique Road Shoew video, you’ll understand why the details are so important.
I’ve only seen one other armoire like it in a museum as a stand alone piece, worth $115 G’s five years ago (all original). Even with the proper repairs, a lot of value ties to the finish. I had to totally strip it down; I found it in pieces, in a dumpster, standing in 18″ of water, so it was a challenge to restore (damn, I’m good!).

    Bear, that’s pure Bull!

Many people think that happiness is in the hands of others and surrounding circumstances.

If the weather weren’t so dreary today, I’d be happier.
If my boss weren’t such a pain, I’d be happy.
Once my financial situation improves, I’ll be happy.

But you don’t have to wait for things to change before you can be happy.
Happiness is more in our own hands than we realize. Happiness is as much a decision as it is an emotion.
You can decide to be happy! It’s in your hands!

Here are some quotations about happiness to give you food for thought.

Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.
    - Dalai Lama

“I believe that the very purpose of life is to be happy. From the very core of our being, we desire contentment. In my own limited experience I have found that the more we care for the happiness of others, the greater is our own sense of well-being. Cultivating a close, warmhearted feeling for others automatically puts the mind at ease. It helps remove whatever fears or insecurities we may have and gives us the strength to cope with any obstacles we encounter. It is the principal source of success in life. Since we are not solely material creatures, it is a mistake to place all our hopes for happiness on external development alone. The key is to develop inner peace.”
    - Dalai Lama

Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.
    - Albert Schweitzer

Happiness is nothing more than good health and a bad memory.
    - Albert Schweitzer

Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace and gratitude.
    - Denis Waitley

Happiness is not in the mere possession of money; it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative effort.
    - Franklin D. Roosevelt

The perfection of wisdom, and the end of true philosophy is to proportion our wants to our possessions, our ambitions to our capacities, we will then be a happy and a virtuous people.
    - Mark Twain

Happiness is a Swedish sunset — it is there for all, but most of us look the other way and lose it.
    - Mark Twain

Happiness is when, what you think, what you say, and what you do, are in harmony.
    - Mohandas K. Gandhi

Happiness is as a butterfly which, when pursued, is always beyond our grasp, but which if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.
    - Nathaniel Hawthorne

Happiness is not so much in having as sharing. We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.
    - Norman MacEwan

Growth itself contains the germ of happiness.
    - Pearl S. Buck

There is a wonderful mythical law of nature that the three things we crave most in life — happiness, freedom, and peace of mind — are always attained by giving them to someone else.
    - Peyton Conway March

To fill the hour — that is happiness.
    - Ralph Waldo Emerson

People spend a lifetime searching for happiness; looking for peace. They chase idle dreams, addictions, religions, even other people, hoping to fill the emptiness that plagues them. The irony is, the only place they ever needed to search was within.
    - Ramona L. Anderson

There is no duty we so underrate as the duty of being happy. By being happy we sow anonymous benefits upon the world.
    - Robert Louis Stevenson

If you observe a really happy man you will find him building a boat, writing a symphony, educating his son, growing double dahlias in his garden. He will not be searching for happiness as if it were a collar button that has rolled under the radiator.
    - W. Beran Wolfe

    If you want to be happy for an hour, take a nap;
    if you want to be happy for a day, go fishing;
    if you want to be happy for a week, take a vacation;
    if you want to be happy for a month, get married;
    if you want to be happy for a year, inherit a fortune;
if you want to be happy for the rest of your life, help other people.
    - Chinese Proverb

Being happy and trying to make others happy is a concious decision I make every day when I wake up. (I don’t always acheive that and sometimes my efforts are misunderstood, but that is my aim.)
    However,

as Mark Twain also said, “Few things are harder to put up with than the annoyance of a good example.”

so I’ll conclude with another Chinese Proverb

“Tell me and I’ll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I’ll understand.”

so if you don’t believe me, involve yourself by trying some of the above advice.
Try this – decide who is the person you least like and find it hardest to get along with, and resolve to be pleasant to them and make them happy for thirty days.
And if you forget and relapse into conflict, start over at day one for another thirty days.

Meditation helps, as with exersise however insomnia is a real pain for me. The last six months I have taken various precriptions which seem to make me more hypa! Keeping busy too helps the hours go by. Even boring ole TV can’t send me under, reading I get too involved and have to know whats going to happen. Music is great but that’s the problem, I love music so become more alert. Have also tried to count sheep, but end up having imaginary conversations with them!(pretty clever, some of them too!) – Would love to reach REM when able to sleep for long enough, as missing my dreams.

If this fails too, they finish by loading honors on your head.” – Jean Cocteau 1889-1963…Golden Earrings – Sound Of The Screaming Day …good morning and [listen]

  • hotfor_hotforwords

Well-rested, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed makes for a [sanguine] lesson and means you must’ve had some hardcore REM cycling going on the night before, Marina.

Typically when I awake most refreshed, it is after having driven myself into utter exhaustion the day before. However, that’s not my favorite way to fall asleep; I won’t so honest as to unsheath that information.

But I can fill-in nos. 2-5 on my list of favorite ways to fall asleep:

    5. With the XBOX controller in my hands.
    4. After a complete physical day: early morning jog, noonish 2-and-a-half-hours with the weights—Shower; Lunch—a set or two of tennis if possible, if not, shooting some hoops or, for the nostalgic sake of HS football, running sprints & steps—Steam Room; Shower; Snack & Smoothie—decrompressing a bit in the massage-ready seat of the M on my zip home, before an evening bike ride with my little girl, who, once she’s asleep, and after another shower, I begin devouringly chomping through all sorts of food, then, I collapse in the California King, which sounds kinda gay actually.
    3. In the hammock under the trees on top of the mountain at the family mountain house in Blowing Rock, and if it’s Summertime, then complete with a Ketel & Cranberry (my favorite chick drink), usually sometimes.
    2. In the recliner watching just enough baseball to induce a nice nap.
    1. _________

Aside from this, my observation is that there is no set number of hours I need to sleep in order to feel more refreshed in the morning. Sometimes if I get 7 or 8, I wake up totally sluggish, regardless of the day before’s events, and other times if I wake up after 5 or 6 I feel ready to spring out of bed, regardless of the day before’s events; [vice versa]. I think it almost has to do with when in your sleep-cycle you are awakened.

This girl was set up by the people whom support the issue of gay marriage, the question was political in nature and they are fuming and upset that she didn’t give the answer they expected. The question as presented was clearly inappropriate for the situation and was a clear attack upon her christian values. She was in a situation that there was no good answer she could have given. I agree with Me Lika Do The Cha Cha She was the
perfect person for gay activists to victimize.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/bsomebody13 bsomebody

Believe it or not, I really liked her answer. First of all, she said that people can choose their own partner “same sex or opposite sex” and she was happy to be in a country that lets you choose. Then she said that it was her personal belief that a married couple should be a man and and a woman, and that she felt that was the way it should be. I did not hear her say anything anti-gay at all. She, technically, supported the legislation that allows same-sex marriage, but said that was not her own belief. She never said that anyone should prevent same-sex marriages. Good for her for giving an answer that she knew would draw some fire. Ask the lady what she believes, then chastise her for stating her belief? People looking for something to bitch about. I’m actually surprised she did not draw more fire from the right for not saying flat-out that gay marriage was wrong.

    Good for her.

I usually have no problem sleeping unless the neighbors are thumping the sub-woofer. If I can’t sleep, I read. Does it every time. In fact, that was one of the hardest parts of attending college: all the reading assignments put me to sleep immediately. I found that if I was inundated with reading assignments, I could even fall into a deep sleep after drinking coffee if I tried to rush through them without taking any breaks. The only position I could rely on to keep me awake if I needed to read for hours was to stand upright.

The trick to that is as simple as reading aloud.
By verbalizing, as you read, you engage areas of
your brain involved in hearing (and reasoning).
Not only will you stay awake, you will learn faster,
and discover falacies and errors embedded in the
material. You’ll be amazed how much stuff you will
say (that you read) which goes undetected, until
you hear it. ["I can't believe my ears"]

One thing that worked for me, and it seems bass ackwards, but if I read faster, then I am able to concentrate more, read at a faster rate (of course), and most importantly stay awake. It takes practice, but I force myself to read really fast. It’s similar to driving fast; I am forced to concentrate much more if I am driving 85 than if I am driving 50. It is also physically tiring. I can only handle about 45 minutes at a time, then I take a break for about 10 minutes.

    It works for me.

    Thanks, B.

As a sophomore I took a speed-reading course figuring it would help me get through the millions of pages I had to read in a shorter time. In fact, I was able to read quite a bit faster when it was over, but the faster I read, the less I comprehended. I had to strike a balance where the speed and comprehension were more evenly matched. Eventually I developed a habit of setting my watch to sound at 40-minute intervals, and would spend 5 minutes walking, then go back feeling a bit refreshed. A couple of the tricks I learned from speed-reading really did help improve my speed without sacrificing too much detail.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/DPS670950 Me Lika Do The Cha Cha

Slow? No, you’re not reading to children – read fast!
As far as shared environment, I’ve had people eyeball
me like I was crazy as I verbalize while inventing a
new process. Fuck ‘em! I know I’m not crazy, and
they’re the same people who want to ask me how to
do things, later, when they see me fly through work.
I always ask them how much money they have to pay
me for the answers, and they stare at me like gaping
fish. “I don’t believe you won’t give me the answer!”
My view is that if you want me to do your work for you,
pay me! Education is not free.
I stopped reading ads, months ago. There is no job
market (in Florida). I only kept an eye on that for
a source of leading economic indication.
I am being offered 4x the money I made, to take on
new projects. I won’t do it. Any incentive is gone.
The taxes I’d have to pay, with all the stress involved
in detailing these projects, isn’t worth it.
Why should I expose myself to individuals who want
to steal my proprietary ideas, again? Not all of the
tricks I know are that hard, but what made me successful
was I know how to keep secrets that are strictly kept
between myself, the end user – and no one else.
Why build a labyrinth to protect the end user, if you
give everyone a map of the place? My encryptions
are like trying to crack Rubik’s cube, without an algorithm.
Once you know how, it’s easy – which is
what you want as an end user.
If you are on Unemployment Compensation, consider
yourself fortunate. I’ve had to help quite a few folks
whose benefits are over, and they still have no work.

    ALTERNATE DREAM SEQUENCE:

SCENE: A young woman is 12,000 miles away from home in a foreign land.

She is highly educated in a field that is of little interest and NO notariety…

She takes a job caring for children and contemplates her future.

One day…a friend sends her an Email, and she has an inspiration…

Using only the tools she has to hand – her intellect, her confidence in self, and an idea – with no money – she sets out to do something no one has ever done before…

She gains a fast following, and soon millions of people from all over the planet are gathering to her and following her work.

Within two years, her worldwide popularity has grown to the point where almost unlimited possibilities exist for her, and the future seems paved with Gold…

    FADE

    On second thought:

NAWWW…forget that idea…too fantastic for most sensibilities…can’t be done…no one would ever believe it.

    You’d have to be a real [Dreamer]….

Hey Marina! I saw JamesatWar’s Bad Grammar video and became an instant fan. No, not only because of the extremely short skirt, but also because simple, lazy grammatical mistakes drive me crazy.

    Your/you’re, there/their/they’re, “alot”… Argh!

Anyway, I was hoping you could help me with my name. I made up the name [vyskol] years ago. And only after, through searching Google (Who hasn’t “Googled” their own name? Hmm, what do you think about that word?), did I find out that it actually exists elsewhere. Apparently, it’s Russian for… something. I have no idea. I don’t know anybody who speaks Russian.

But now, I not only “know” someone who speak and teaches Russian, but she’s also a philologist!

So please help me out. Not necessarily a video… Even a simple reply here or email would be awesome.

    Thanks!
    [vyskol]

    Instructions for lingual kick-start:

    1. Open jaw and lips

    4. Repeat until climax

It refers to being covered with goose bumps, which are the result of the extreme chills and fever opiate addicts experience when they are taken off the drug. Smokers also use it to describe quitting smoking without using any patches, gum, medications, etc.

How do I like to fall asleep? With my woman in my arms after a fulfilling session of lovemaking. That was easy to answer…

As for this lesson, I will have to say it was a little lacking due to the word choice. REM sleep just had it’s acronym explained, and that was about it. Didn’t really give Marina much of a chance to display her philological knowledge, nor did the origin of the term ‘REM sleep’ get delved into much. I guess it was good for a short and sweet lesson, but I ended up finding it a bit superficial and undynamic. The dream sequence was pretty enjoyable, as were all the other aspects of Marina’s presentation, but the actual lesson was a little wanting in my eyes. Maybe I just need to sleep on it…

  • pennsyltucky9

Okay. There’s something you need to understand here, but it involves science, so you’ll have to conduct an experiment of your own or it won’t mean a thing.

Procedure: Go look in the mirror. Now say “motorboat.” Say it fast and say it slowly. Can you see your tongue at any time? No, I didn’t think so.

Hypothesis: A magic word is magic. It doesn’t require translation. There’s a reason why it’s a magic word. She’ll get the (massage) er, uh, message. Just take a deep breath, hold out your tongue and say “atlatl” 25 times without any pauses.

    Observation: MMMMMmmmmagic!

Discussion: No way! Gentlemen don’t discuss such things.

    Conclusion: I rest my case.

Well, since there is no new lesson, I guess I will have to fall back on the weather for a topic of discussion. We tied the all-time (well, since they started keeping records, anyway) temp. for the date the other day and Modesto beat it by 5°. It got up to 90°F Wed., but Thur. it dropped down to the 70s, which was perfect for working outdoors. The sun would pop out and then go back behind the clouds for some relief. It sprinkled a bit last night, but it’s drying out with a stiff breeze and the sun is burning off the overcast. It should be 80°F, so it won’t be too bad at all.

For any of you that did not get into deep REM last night, read the above paragraph three times.

 I have tried to sleep with my eyes open, but it never works-or does it? If I am asleep,I don’t know if my eyes are open or closed. I’m so confused!!!!!!!!!!!

  • rebecca

LOL, I’m pretty sure Marina pasted those feet into the picture from somewhere else!

  • originalistrick

Aww, I know. It really meant nothing from the git-go. I’m just saying look at who (what?) finished ahead of her. Come on.
I’m just outrageously biased anyway. But seriously, and objectively, since I’ve become a member of The Family, I have yet to see one of these “contests” in which she truly shouldn’t have been at the top.

  • yousufn

I think I’m in love with you! marry me please? If not, can you please tell me about the word [defenestrate]?

  • rebecca

  • rebecca

OK, I compared the feet from the thumbnail and her feet in one of her videos, and now I think they are actually her feet.

I have no idea why I felt compelled to prove that! lol

  • http://www.theendoftheinternet.com/ Chemikal

“what the hell is wrong with people?”

    People are just wrong! :D
Nice imagination though, did you ever realize that you’re dreaming in your sleep? When I dream about flying, I sometimes realize that I’m dreaming, because I often associate the two occurrences.
And if you manage to stay asleep after your realization, then the fun may start. Imagination is the limit! But keep it simple, or you risk drifting into a nightmare. :-)

Dreaming is one of the most personal experiences you can have, because it’s the only time you’re really alone with yourself. I think that in the future, we will take mind numbing holidays, in our sleep.
The perfect way to positively charge yourself during the night, for the day to come.
So if someone will tell you to dream on, you could reply: I will, thank you. :D

  • ilikesexytime

No way. those HAVE TO BE HER FEET!

  • David Welker

I would like to request the phrase:

    [thinly veiled crusade]

    Alternatively:

    [thinly veiled threat]

What is the significance of a crusade or threat being thinly veiled?

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

It means hidden in an ineffective way. Someone hidden behind a thin veil would be easily recognized.

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

It’s a command to a horse. The question is whose horse was named Nellie?

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

    You mean sole.

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

I think it was originally [hurrah], but I have seen variations of spellings from the past. It must have started somewhere and M could investigate that.

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

If you fall asleep on your right side, do you dream of San Diego?

  • David Welker

Thanks for the reply. I am aware of that. But, something about the phrase makes it seem even more sinister. As if a “thinly veiled crusade” or a “thinly veiled threat” was even worse than just a “normal” crusade or threat. But, you would think that something that was thinly veiled would actually be better (because less threatening) than a crusade or threat that was well-hidden. I don’t know why I have the sense that the phrase “thinly veiled” makes these things even worse — maybe I am wrong about that. What is the point of saying that a threat is thinly veiled? Is it to insult someone who has tried to hide their motives, but failed miserably?

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

Perhaps realizing you are dreaming is a defense mechanism to keep one from feeling too uncomfortable with the situation. It always wakes me up. Maybe the realization is just the first stage of awaking, such that it would not be possible to realize it and continue to dream.

  • dabeyta

Hello Hot For Words, I would like to request the word [spelunking] and the word [gross]. The first seems to be made up. The second has a negative connotation. Why?

  • http://toastytech.com/guis/bobboot1.gif Bob

Apparently you only remember a dream if you are awoken whilst you are in REM. You may have several periods of REM during a night’s sleep, but you only remember the last one and then only if you awake before descending into deep sleep again.
Could the feeling of realisation that you are dreaming be a signal that you have had enough sleep and it is time to wake up?

Conversation I had with “Smarterchild” A robot that kids can talk to… It has a planner, but although it is targeted toward childeren displays ads for debt management and…. weight loss

    James says: Fuck

    - SmarterChild :
Ah yes. If I’m not mistaken, Shakespeare first said that.

    James says:
who the hell do you think you are???? HotForWords?

    SmarterChild says:
I’m SmarterChild! I’m a smart computer that you can chat with about all kinds of things.

Type “home” to see what I can do.

    James says:
well obviously you are not that smart if you think Shakespesre coined the word “fuck”

    SmarterChild says:
    That’s quite a grave insult.

    James says:
see, you can’t have a proper conversation. You are probably high on meth and crack,. so I bid you good day

    SmarterChild says:
    I can’t understand what you’re saying…

    James says:
Well, that just proves my point then doesn’t it

    SmarterChild says:
I don’t understand this fully enough to say anything smart about it…

    James says:

then don’t say anything at all

    SmarterChild says:
    OK. Don’t get frustrated…

Gross is originally from the German for “big.” We also get the word “grow” from this origin, the German verb “grossir.” I think this would make an excellent lesson if it isn’t one already.

As to the negative connotation, my German teacher Mrs. Duerr said it can be the opposite of delicate and refined, so think of it as meaning big and clumsy or raw and unrefined also. Finally, there are some things I can think of that are fairly disgusting the larger they get in size. Know what I mean? Okay that’s just gross…

I said I fall asleep dreaming about LA because here in Eastern Europe California is
being related only with Hollywood and LA (when I was younger)
When I finished highschool I wanred to emigrate to US in CA LA but things changed and now everithing is allright right here
Now we’ll have in several years Euro curency and my bussiness will work better and better
But as reflex some habits you can not change and that is why I am still dreming about LA
Now that I am older I konw that LA is not such a great US city, but still you
can make a dream about those lands (even if now they are more like United Villages )

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/bsomebody13 bsomebody

I think that is the point. A thinly veiled threat is obviously a threat, and the threat-giver felt it was not even worth the effort to conceal it.

With a crusade, this is something most people feel should be hidden from public view, because many people in the public do not like someone being targeted; alot of people like to root for the underdog. If the crusade is thinly veiled, the crusader most likely feels comfortable enough to launch an obvious attack, with only the slightest of justification.

“grossir” would be french. not german. german verbs always end in -en.

“groß” does not have a negative connotation over here. on the contrary. it’s sometimes used to describe something good, cool.

btw, “duerr” means “meager” and the like.

  • pennsyltucky9

Thanks, Alex…. Yeah, I mix them up. Heck, it was 25 years ago. I always knew it was a mistake to study French just a few years later. I blame it all on a woman I met in Quebec who was way too nice to me. Guess I should have completed the process and moved to Europe for awhile just to solidify either the French or the German language in my mind.

  • http://mentalgrammarhasbeensetup.blogspot.com alex

yeah, well, how about a vacation? just don’t visit all those castles and shit. americans seem to have an affinity to do just that. never understood why. it’s all just bricks and stones and stuff.

  • mrsrabbit

Thanks; that was very helpful, and that was along the same lines of what I was thinking…However, there is still a geography issue at hand, which I will have to take into my own hands and ask around. Where are you from?

  • pennsyltucky9

I grew up in the USA near Pittsburgh. It’s in southwestern Pennsylvania which is located in the upper reaches of the Ohio River Valley. Where are you?

  • pennsyltucky9

    Thanks, Bob.

These are helpful words to bear in mind.

  • mrsrabbit

thanks for all that geographical information, but frankly, if I didn’t know where Pittsburgh or Pennsylvania were the words “Ohio River Valley” would be completely meaningless.
I’m south of the border…not Tijuana tho. In the small and unknown town of Mexico City. Right now with a swine-flu curfew

  • pennsyltucky9

    Bienvenidos!

Yes, I included not only city and state names but a physical geographic location as well, just in case the river valley would help to make the area easier to find on the map. I’ve never been to Mexico City but I understand that the mountains surrounding it are beautiful.

Sorry about the flu outbreak. The news stories show that almost everyone wears a surgical mask when they are out in public places. I hope you are in good health, and that you and the people close to you are safe from infection.

  • mrsrabbit

thanks for the well-wishing; nobody i know is actually down with anything so i’m not worried. everybody wears those masks because they’re being ridiculous, frankly. but yeah the country is at a standstill, with classes cancelled till next wednesday and movie theaters and the like closed down…i’m pretty bored.

  • pennsyltucky9

No, elahie, I didn’t google it. I’m too lazy for that!

I studied anthropology in college. I took one class in linguistics where we studied many language groups and heard some examples of different language types from all different locations on earth, and another class about the structure of cultural groups of all different sizes from all different locations around the world, including their spiritual belief systems. Plus, I had to learn a lot of other similar stuff in other anthropology classes, too.

The San culture of Namibia and Botswana did receive special attention as isolated hunter-gatherer groups living under unique conditions. But I’m not sure where I heard this word. I know something about it but I can’t remember exactly where I ran across the information.

I agree with your idea and think [OBEAH] would be a great word for Marina to do a lesson on! Thanks for suggesting it. See you around the campus.

Marina, I would like to request the word [racism] since it easily the most abused word in America today. It used to mean the belief that one race of humans was superior to another. But today, it is thrown around irresponsibly like cheap candy in any discussion regarding politics rendering it almost devoid of meaning. What is its proper origin and use? And, who really is misusing the word [racist], or [racism] today?

Thank you for your consideration. Have a beautiful weekend.

    Respectfully,
