    Hey Marina,

Of course I’m following you on Twitter.

In retrospect, it should’ve been obvious that penitentiary was somehow related to that. Oh well, another good lesson. I wonder if Ms. Panettiere knows about that at all.

…and I always thought Marina’s last name was A Lover which comes from the American “Lover” which means “Do’er of Love”.

Sorry, Marina. I’m not following you on Twitter. I don’t have an account because I’m not a social network type of guy.

MARINA! You mentioned that the surname Panettiere might be related to penitentiary? Were you serious or were you joking about her recent plight? If you were, I get it. If not then I’m wondering where you drew that connection. To me, it seems that Panettiere would mean essentially “the one who worked in the place where bread was sold”. Sounds roundabout, doesn’t it? Well that’s because if I had used the simple word “baker”, that would have been inaccurate. Besides, there’s already the Boulanger which means essentially that. Thanks for keeping the lessons like the good ol’ “innocent” ones!

  • http://twitter.com/Strabismus wordlover

Орлова (Orlova) essentially means “daughter of the eagle”.

Let’s not jump to conclusions, MeLika!

Marina’s tweets are few and far between compared with most twitters. She doesn’t twitter “way more than [she] come[s] here.” In fact, she is mostly busy thinking up the lessons, making the videos, editing them, etc. Keep in mind she has to eat, sleep, etc. just like we all do!

So, I guess that’s where the expression “lock ‘em up in the pen!” comes from.

Billy Miner, a famous train robber (who is believed to have first said the phrase “hands up”) was locked up at this penitentiary until he escaped.

    Hey Doug,
I wanted to disagree with your characterization of Marina’s Twittering, especially since you don’t follow her.

    You said;
“…since you Twitter WAY more than you come here”

I believe you are making an apples – orange comparison of Marina posting here versus on Twitter.

First the facts, and Marina can correct me. Marina has been on Twitter since about Dec and has made 1,172 updates which is roughly 10 Twitters per day. Keep in mind, a lot of those Tweets are for postings about this site. So, take away about 2-4 of those tweets from 10 and Marina is only making 6 Tweets per day, most of those answering questions or interacting with people that she follows. She can have a life too, right?

Keep in mind, that Twitter is an externally facing communications mechanism and while the posts here are internally facing. Two different types of communications. Of course it would be nice if she made a reply to every one of us, but that is not practical, and until you have a site of your own with 300+ comments to keep up with, you will soon appreciate how difficult this is to keep up.

Also, keep in mind, Marina makes comments on many other places like other blogs, on her own YouTube video comment pages and watches other people’s videos, makes comments on them, etc. Give Marina a break. In my opinion, Marina’s Tweets are very valid, informative, and very timely. You should give it a try and see if you like it.

What is it that attracts new Tweeters and they are female and not bad looking, is it the tiger cause I know I am not that good looking any more. It’s got to be that damn tiger. To get down to it Marina really only follows her friends from YT and just wants us to follow her so she looks like she has a big following. She never answers us back if we leave her a Tweet. So why should we follow her? Damn Tiger. Maybe it has brought me luck with the ladies. Hmmmm

Your missing out Cap! I’m only one degree way from being able to tweet to Obama. I found a new graphics artist to help out with my company artwork. Finding some free advertising from a good friend in Spain. Same friend found me a way to get a $400k yacht sooner than I had planed. I helped Wordspy address a problem they where not aware of. I gave comfort to a woman that was having a really bad month. I make people laugh. Oh and I’m on my way to becoming well know guru in the maritime industry.

I can go on forever. Funny thing is I used to hate twitter for I didn’t know what the heck it was for. I could not find a use for it. Now that I know the many ways it is used for, it’s like the next best thing since sliced bread. Yet, with all this I see the writing on the wall that if twitter doesn’t expand it’s capabilities it will become obsolete as other people come out with better products.

One thing tweeter need to understand about twitter is that it is a SOCIAL tool. Yes it can be used to broadcast information but that is not it’s intent. It’s like if you want to get more letters you have to send them to get them.

Are looks everything? I have like over 2,000 followers. I have no YouTube show. A weak ass blog. Nobody knows me and yet I have people tweeting to me all the time.

Limited tweeter friends. That common with most Introverts. Extraverts follow everyone. I’m not an Extravert but a hybrid of the two. I’ve become what they call Ambivert. I was an introvert most of my life and have been pushing to become an extravert.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/DPS670950 Me Lika Do The Cha Cha

I get to see all the Twit pics here, links are posted when she does that. Sounds like she’s holding out on us if she doesn’t keep fans of her site in the loop, and only discusses her plans on Twitter…
I still want to see the number quantifying her posts here vs her Twitter posts.
You guys sure are being defensive about this…
    Why?
I followed her on coComments – no great shakes there…
Whatever happened to that? Must not have been “all that” as advertised, hmm?
Now, I’m supposed to believe Twitter is “all that” and more??
The real number to look at is the dwindling number of views here.
Does Google pay better if she Twitters?
They don’t pay so good if your site doesn’t get the hits.
The time she spends promoting her site at Twitter is not reflected in the number of views she is gets. Where is the increase? Not here…
Seems like a waste, to me – sorry if you don’t agree.

  • http://twitter.com/Strabismus wordlover

Yes it can be used to broadcast information but that is not it’s intent.

A host of tweeters would disagree.

    Nobody knows me[...]

This is perplexing. Apparently they DO know you. Not only on twitter but from your contacts at sea (which I’m sure are more than just one).

I have like over 2,000 followers.

2,000 followers is an average number among those who are “in the loop” on twitter. Me, I have only 41 at last count but I care about them and it’s fun to share news with everybody. It’s for fun and informativeness, to me anyways.

You have a valid point Doug. Why should one follow Marina if she doesn’t respond back? I don’t have an answer for that. I have over 2k followers that I follow back and I miss Marina’s tweets. I have to do a search or run a filter to find her tweets. From what I can tell she receives very little tweets. That’s because she rarely tweets back to her followers. That’s fine for that is how she wants to use twitter as a broadcast medium.

To answer you question I would guess about 200+ comments.

  • hs4mm

One doesn’t have to follow Marina or be on twitter to read her tweets. Her tweets are on the HFW site (in a small window or) in a full page by itself — http://www.hotforwords.com/twitter/ –, and you can even set things up so that the tweets are automatically updated (“Auto Update” button)!

No need for explicit number (just concept of addition): Since Marina’s tweets are on HFW but her HFW-comments are not on twitter, Marina is more on HFW than on twitter!

point taken. Sense of humor? It’s crunch time at school. My sense of humor times out about the last three weeks of school. I should have known; Klaus is generally not one to belittle. ’nuff excuses. My apologies, Klaus.

  • http://captainjack.ws Captain Jack

“A host of tweeters would disagree.”

That’s fine, but it’s not the majority of the tweeters. You can not deny that twitter is social networking application.

“This is perplexing. Apparently they DO know you. Not only on twitter but from your contacts at sea (which I’m sure are more than just one).”

Maybe a better words would have been I’m not as well know as many other famous people in the media. What I was referring to is I don’t use the fame tool to get my followers.

“2,000 followers is an average number among those who are “in the loop” on twitter. Me, I have only 41 at last count but I care about them and it’s fun to share news with everybody. It’s for fun and informativeness, to me anyways.”

I don’t care about the average number. I have a rather sold group of about 100 tweeters that I have contacted. The rest are just stalkers and self proclaimed marketing gurus. The way I see it I would have never met these people if I did not reach out to the 2000 twtrs I have now. I wish I could tweet to 400k to find other like minded tweeters out there. But the number of followers is not a goal for me. The quality of the followers is more important to me. There are website out there like (http://twitalyzer.com) that tracks the influence you have of your tweets. I won’t get into the details here but it will show you the true influence of your tweets vs followers reactions as many other measurements. It really helps efficiently grow your network of fellow tweeters. I would like to be able to tweet something like ” I’m looking for x widget.” and feel that I have accessed everyone that has a widget that they are not using.

Hell, I want to take Marina to Aruba, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

Face it. We’re just a bunch of obsessed, spoiled Marina/HFW addicts. And for this affliction there is no cure.

  • http://twitter.com/Strabismus wordlover

Oh yes, it’s both for information and sociality. True.

But the number of followers is not a goal for me. The quality of the followers is more important to me.

Hey bsomebody, apology accepted. I think highly of you and you are correct, it is not my nature to belittle anyone. I know how difficult crunch time can be. You’re a good guy.

  • http://captainjack.ws Captain Jack

You’re thinking inside of the box again. You judging the book by it’s cover. I’m not a labeled box that you put me in. Why wouldn’t Obama want to tweet you or I? If we had a fool proof way of turning the economy around don’t you think he would want to communicate with that person? Maybe Obama gets a lot of flack for a word he used in a speech and he can’t find a better word that describes what he truly wants to convey to the people. What if you knew of the perfect word for him? I like that I found a way to get useful information to Obama if I really needed to. But I’m really happy to see my friend get picked for US H.U.D.

Another example is McHammer tweeted me before I had a chance to tweet him. Apparently he had an interest in talking about the the time he spent in the Navy. So how can you say that people would have nothing to say to a man of the seas? I’m getting a lot of questions about the Somali pirates attack. I even was asked what could be done about such a threat. So you see. We as a society have much to offer to others. You have much knowledge about things I don’t know of. I know you know about other things than words.

It’s all about sharing information and not hording it. Twitter like many other apps, allows people to share knowledge in real time. I have learned much because of it.

  • http://twitter.com/Strabismus wordlover

I agree. But let me just say that I know of no box. To me, even the sky is too small to fit my wild-eyed ideas! (say that three times fast  )

I didn’t mean to relegate you to a group of sea-roving ne’erdowells and I apologize if I gave you that impression.

Hello. I’d like to request a simple word that I have seen used a lot on several message boards that I visit: [BUMP] Now, help me out here if I get this wrong, lately this word is used when someone replies to a very old post on a message board making it then show up on the top of the list. It is “bumped” up.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/bsomebody13 bsomebody

Shhhhh! Quit looking at him. You'll give him away! Sheeeesh, dude.

  • http://twitter.com/Strabismus wordlover

    Correct. You visit 4chan often?

  • http://captainjack.ws Captain Jack

Marina had mentioned in the past how phone calls have taken up much of her time. She now keeps calls to a minimum and now her production has gone way up because of this. That said I think she could spend 5 to 10 minutes and randomly make a few more comment on her site.

Also remember people. Marina spends many hours putting these lessons together. She also has site maintenance that takes up much time among many other things. So you might all think she is just sitting around waiting to do the next lesson she is working her tail off. I’m nearly shocked that she even leaves the house.

  • http://captainjack.ws Captain Jack

LOL you might be right. Marina is like crack to an addict.

  • http://twitter.com/Strabismus wordlover

I second that. I have corresponded with her (however briefly) and she is quite a busy lady!

  • http://www.youtube.com/CheVolay Che Volay

I only remember one reply to me :-)

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/Father0fTears fatheroftears

On and off. I visit at least 6 message boards!

  • http://twitter.com/Strabismus wordlover

You’re right, Che. I like to stay in contact with her. Although I don’t have a solid colored box I consider myself to be more of a man of words than Captain Jack. NO offense intended, Cap’n! I’m just saying that I seem to have more to say about words and language(s), whereas you tend to just say things that reflect the world around you and current events.

  • http://captainjack.ws Captain Jack

  You just put yourself in a bigger box!
So you’re saying the sky is close to your limit? Why didn’t you say the galaxy is not even large enough? Or the universe? Oh why limit to just the universe? Lets try dimensions of space or time. If you can wrap you mind round parallel universes then you just multiplied of where you can put your ideas. Now you can share your ideas with people around you and make them even bigger. We could work the other way too. Do you know how much data is stored in a human blood cell? I could go on for nearly ever. But my mind is in a box too. No matter how hard you try you can’t teach a dog physics. His brain doesn’t have the capacity. I wonder if my mind has limit of understanding of knowledge.

But then again, I am close to getting my AC-Gold certification in Toastmasters, and test for my taekwondo black belt next week, and am looking for a publisher for my anthology Wisdom of Our Mothers which promises to follow the phenomenal success of Tim Russert’s Wisdom of Our Fathers; so maybe there is life outside of HFW.

This is a word I’d love for you to post. I feel it is the most important realization for people who seek to understand each others realities; and when we understand others, we are able to free ourselves of arrogance in the appreciation of a clearer sense of what is likely to be actual. Arrogance… I strongly feel, is the greatest killer of numinous energy, due to the dogma we dysfunctionally obsess over when we isolate ourselves in singlemindedness.

I need visitors to make my work meaningful and help me get out of “below poverty” living from Social Security Disability. Whose tweet? Several people may have tweeted/texted etc.; perhaps the In Touch, print edition, March 9, 2009 will have more info.

(HW: I have been seeing Marina’s tweets since around Jan 10, 09.)

  • http://sostire.ca/ BillyB

You don’t have to try twitter, but don’t fear or mock it. Marina tried digg, cocomment & other stuff to bring traffic. Twitter seems to be quite effective in attracting followers & the more she tweets the more she attracts attention.
People that respond to her on twitter have their followers see their tweets & check out this “Hotforwords” person. Heck my son-in-law’s dad is now a hotforwords twitter follower.
If you give it try, follow some folks that interest you, or even folks that live in your area. I remember you said once that you took quite a while before you started to comment @ hotforwords. Take your time & enjoy change, it can be wonderful.
Anyways I’m sure your email is filled up on this one. have fun with the delete key.

  • http://sostire.ca/ BillyB

If my memory serves me correctly (it doesn’t always) Marina mentioned on twitter that she was talking to Klitshco, & this young starlet came up to him while he was talking to “M”. She started flirting in an inappropriate manner sitting in his lap & misbehaving.
I asked “which brother?” … now I know. Also learned from your link, Vitali’s been married for 13 years.
But what’s important now… will the Brothers do battle in the ring. That would be the card of the decade I’m sure. gotta’ happen

  • hs4mm

Marina mentioned talking to Klitschko and that he was really nice; and that her conversation was interrupted by Panettiere jumping on his lap and talking to him incessaently.

  • supersteve

Sorry, I tried following you on Twitter, but I couldn’t get any work done, for having to look at my phone twice every hour.

Great work Marina in educating the people that want to learn. The majority of your words I know and can trace back their origins but their are some that I was not aware of. So great job!

Only request I have is to set-up an official Facebook account. I am new here and as a big fan of MR. O that is what encouraged me to sign up , so being new I may have over looked an Official account.

    Hey Billy,
It seems that the the Sexy Geek voting site is having some issues whereby they are not recognizing or blocking certain domains on purpose or by accident. My ISP is ATT. I wonder if you are with ATT also?

I was able to successfully vote on my iPhone just a few minutes ago and registered vote #34700 which I also saw increment on my desktop, but I am not able to vote on my desktop despite it having been more than 24 hours ago and I am using a different browser.

  • http://wired.reddit.com/sexygeeks_2008/?s=top pedanticKarl – Click Here to Vote 4 Marina

By the way Billy, it does not matter which link you use to vote.

This link is the main link which embeds the other link. To view Marina right away without having to scroll, click on the “top-rated” link just above the scrolled window.

The advantage of using this link is that it supposedly clears the cookie at the appropriate 24 hour increment.
    http://blog.wired.com/underwire/2008/12/every-geeks-a-l.html

I prefer this link as it get to the heart of the matter.
I clear my own cookies after voting to be ready for the next 24 hour voting period.
    http://reddit.wired.com/sexygeeks_2008/?s=top

Currently, there seems to be a problem for me to vote also from my desktop where my ISP is ATT. I am able to vote perfectly fine on my iPhone.

  • http://toastytech.com/guis/bobboot1.gif Bob

Interesting. I see the deadline has passed and the site hasn’t been updated since August, so I guess this is too late to make it.
I have found that the wisdom I learned from my mother and grandmother wasn’t in a form for me to appreciate the lesson until years later. It came in the form of trite sayings which had been learned by rote.
    For example:
“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try again.”
Hidden message; If at first you don’t succeed, your not doing it right – keep trying different things until you find something that works.
I just wish that I had discovered this, or had it explained fully, earlier in my life.

  • m3v4n

    Hi Marina,

I saw your interview with Mr.O’Reilly and I think that the people who said those things are just plain stupid and don’t even deserve your contempt! Don’t let such simple-minded and hateful people keep you from doing the fantastic work your doing!… No matter what those jerks say, What I and so many others here and out there see is a Intelligent, beautiful lady who enjoys teaching and sharing her interest and knowledge in English… and having seen some of the things those people said about you, all I can say is that they are just h8ters and cowards…. and just plain retarded!

So keep on smilin’ and don’t let them get to you… Dont give them the pleasure of knowing that the stupid, hurtful things they say affect you…. Don’t let them win… People say stuff like that when they can’t bear the success of others… so that tells volumes about just how far you’ve come!

    Carpe Diem!

    Hey Marina

I’ve always been very interested in the origin of various words, sometimes wondering how the words I use on a daily basis came to. I’m also interested in the russian language, culture and history, so I’ve come to like your videos very much.
Especially the ones spoken in your native tongue. (although I don’t understand one bit of it, but hopefully sometime in the future)

I would like to make a word request, and the word is
    [communism]
As I mentioned before, I’m very interested in russian history and culture, so that let me to being interested in communism and politics and philosophy in general.
So I thought it would be fun to hear, from you, how the word originated and how it developed through time.
Other words I thought would be interesting to hear about are:
    [Nihilism], [Anarchism] and [absurd].

Keep on posting more great videos.

    Best wishes.

some of the art mediums I use when teaching my students are [tempra, crayons, and oil pastels]. I’ve always thought that crayon is such an odd word. I’m glad to see woman who is not only beautiful but promote intelligence. Our youth need role models… stay classy, not trashy.

HotForWords, I am curious about where the word [tease] comes from, its origins.

The word is interesting to me because it can be used to describe schoolyard bullies, at one end of the spectrum, to flirtatious behavior at the other end, and numerous subtle variations in between.

    Will you please investigate?

  • nomusician

this Easter I wanted to know where the word [bunny] comes from.
you know as in bunny rabbit, which is sexier than pussy cat.

Because everyone likes dirt—especially celebrity dirt—perhaps a popular new feature of the site would be Dirt of the Day, which consists of the filthiest, rudest, most ungentlemanly E-mail of the day. If several good ones arrive on the same day, they can be saved and parcelled out on “slow E-mail days” in order to even the supply.

Of course, fake dirty, rotten E-mails would be immediately discarded. Only genuinely lousy E-mails are allowed (one must strive for continuous quality). Now the more creative of us would be tempted to produce some real [corkers] so that the ordinary lame-brained scribblers will be left frustratingly in the dust, with their E-mails languishing in second-ratedness, but we must resist; only authentic crap must be allowed, so that this new feature will allow us to peer into their twisted souls (which is where the fun is).

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

Bitch-ass should be hyphenated as it is a compound adjective. Some people just make me sick with their weakly-punctuated comments. And then Marina, being a proper noun, must be capitalized. Can you believe someone forgetting that? How can something so basic be ignored. Plus the sin is compounded by not capitalizing the first word of the sentence. It’s just plain disgusting. And your mother dresses you funny.

There, is that better whining?

Update: Interesting story about this 3rd worm attack.
    http://blog.bull3t.me.uk/archives/internet/twitter-infected-with-mikeyy-worm

Attention to anyone who uses Twitter. Visit the link below for further instructions on how to clear the worm out of your twitter account if you get infected. I should emphasize that the attack is more of a nuisance than malicious – its only activity is to post unwanted messages. It appears that no passwords or other sensitive information was ever collected. I would recommend that you do not try to view anyone’s twitter profile or click on their twitter name until a patch is made.

This is the story about the 3rd worm that came out about 2am PDT this Sunday morning.
    http://mashable.com/2009/04/12/mikeyy-another-twitter-worm-on-the-loose/

This worm only affects your twitter account. Your computer is still completely safe of this worm.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/bsomebody13 bsomebody

I don’t know when you’re serious or not half the time. The other half, I don’t know know when you are joking. Just in case: space semi-colon text semi-colon space. For brevity, the examples have the opening and closing semis combined. I know you know how to do this, but just in case anyone else needs to know.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/bsomebody13 bsomebody

    that was tacky

  • http://www.youtube.com/CheVolay Che Volay

Is that you or the worm making all the repeats?

  • http://captainjack.ws Captain Jack

It’s just a little script that takes over your twitter account and types up nasty little comments. It lives in the Bio link colors. Twitter has installed a patch but it will take some time for the worms to die out.

  • http://captainjack.ws Captain Jack

Im repeating the warning to my followers and other hashtag groups, but the “Man, Twitter can’t fix shit. Mikeyy owns. :)”– “Dude! Mikeyy! Seriously? Haha. ;)” & “Mikeyy. Woooo!” tweets are fake. It’s just a script randomly tweeting pre-programmed tweets. This worm will not affect you computer, just your twitter account.

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

This request has been made before. I remember seeing a picture of the ancient start of the symbol some time ago. It was two stone columns (equating to the to lines through the dollar sign, even though the sign appears sometimes with only one line) wrapped by a wavy banner (equating to the S itself). I forget which words appeared on the bannner or who used the symbol.

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

    Why not?

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

It just means obvious evidence, such as seeing a still-smoking gun after a shooting. For example, if you tickled M with a feather until she went nuts, if you were caught with the feather on your person, it would be the smoking gun.

Your only defense would be to flap your wings and fly off.

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

Twitter is a service that allows people to broadcast periodic messages to interested parties telling them of what they are doing, their current thoughts or any nonsense they can dream up. Its success depends of course on the ability of the sender to attract followers. Basically, it is a blog that is dispensed in lots of little pieces.

We already have enough distractions I think. If you already know everything a person is doing/thinking, what is there to talk about when you meet, except to say, “I know, I know“?

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

They howcumzit you didn’t ask this way?

    Relax.
You are feeling rested and relaxed.
Listen only to the sound of my voice.
Notice how evenly my words sound.
You can not hold your eyes open.

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

And what phrases are used in other languages to mean the same thing?

    Evan?
    Chemikal?

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

Might as well throw in [cuter than a junebug's hind leg]. Stuff like that is probably just dreamed up by one person and catches on through word of mouth or from being in some publication, like a short story. It might be very hard to find the true origin, in which case M is not going to do a lesson just to say, “I can’t find out. Another mystery not solved by your trusty Hotforwords.”

Perhaps there should be a list on the site of all the words M has looked at, but decided that she can’t/won’t do a lesson on. They could be inserted in the alphabettic lesson list in parenthesis, so that everyone will know not to bother. I wonder what percentage of requests would be in that category.

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

My mother had a second hip replacement after falling against her front door (which wasn’t latched right). That went OK, but at 88, vascular dementia is starting to show up, so my sister and I are taking turns watching her. I’m the night shift.

Her old PC had 32MB of RAM and dial up, so HFW was impossible. We got DSL and I put in an ancient stick of 128MB, but there is something still molasses-like that needs to be ironed out. So my sis brought her late Toshiba Satellite over and it works OK on WiFi.

Now if I can just watch the vids and keep the drool off the keytops…

When the McClellan AFB (decommissioned in 2001) commissary was moved to a new building, the original pre-WWII commisary building was remodeled into offices for base staff. The cooler room (where the beef was stored before butchering) was left the same size for use as a conference room. The new occupants put up a sign over the entrance to the conference room: Meet Locker.

    Hello, Marina!

I was wondering if you knew the original meaning of the word [Easter] and the history of what it was, and how it became the holiday it is today. I know it is NOT originally a christian holiday. I think this will be an interesting investigation for all. Thanks!

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

I have always heard the phrase, “beat a tattoo.” Looking it up, a tattoo is a drum beat (or bugle call) to call soldiers/sailors to bed.

Maybe the skin art definition of tattoo had to do with revealing it when undressing for bed.

Marina, Thank you so much for your educational and entertaining website. My word request is in response to your clip on the origin of ‘hot dog’. Another questionable food related word is [headcheese] or [head cheese] (not sure which is correct). It is a form of lunch mest usually made from pork ‘byproducts’. Remember too, this was right after the peak of Social Darwinism in America. “Survival of the Fittest,” in essence, might makes right. Much of this attitude paved the way for America’s international and domestic attitude throughout the twentieth century.

My maiden name is Lent….which comes from Richer Von lent (used to be a country in Europe and the name meant richer from the land of lent or so I have been told) However I know that lent is a period of time in the catholic tradition as well and I was wondering if they had anything to do with each other or the history behind the word. THANKS!

You got all of that just from queue? I think Americas foreign policy in the 20th AND 21st century has been one of counter-acting people or peoples who believe “might makes right”. Also, isn’t comparing that to darwinism kinda apples/oranges?

you made me think of the popular movie “titanic”. the sinking occurred at the end of the edwardian era. a part of me wanted to see dicaprio’s character survive and winslet’s character perish. to represent the cultural shift that was to come with the beginning of the great war. i think that you are right regarding the “survival of the fittest” comment. however i think the idea of the “fittest” changed. i think of president theodore roosevelt as representing this very well. also, america’s experience of the great war was significantly different than that of the rest of the world. this also contributed to the national identity of the u.s. that you mentioned as being consistent throughout the 20th century. um yeah… i think i’ll jump out of line and abandon ship now.

Our experience in what we call world war I was different than the worlds because the majority of the country was isolationist. Same with WW II, actually. You know, you leave us alone and we can do the same. Again, missing the whole fittest thing. After WW II, america DID rebuild european and asian countries but by then, it was no secret what the soviets were up to.

Hi Marina I’m the YouTube user FallingRabbit, I think you do not know me hahaha. Well I wanted to request the word [Jigsaw]. I think you know the film “Saw” and the bad guy in this film is calling himself Jigsaw and I know that jigsaw means puzzle but what is the origin of this word?

    [Jigsaw]

  • sheller

    Thanks, I’ll look into gravatars.

Now – the word stuff I’m really interested in -

A- GANTLET, GAUNTLET. Here’s an entry from dictionary.com: Word History: The spelling gauntlet is acceptable for both gauntlet meaning “glove” or “challenge” and gauntlet meaning “a form of punishment in which lines of men beat a person forced to run between them”; but this has not always been the case. The story of the gauntlet used in to throw down the gauntlet is linguistically unexciting: it comes from the Old French word gantelet, a diminutive of gant, “glove.” From the time of its appearance in Middle English (in a work composed in 1449), the word has been spelled with an au as well as an a, still a possible spelling. But the gauntlet used in to run the gauntlet is an alteration of the earlier English form gantlope, which came from the Swedish word gatlopp, a compound of gata, “lane,” and lopp, “course.” The earliest recorded form of the English word, found in 1646, is gantelope, showing that alteration of the Swedish word had already occurred. The English word was then influenced by the spelling of the word gauntlet, “glove,” and in 1676 we find the first recorded instance of the spelling gauntlet for this word, although gantelope is found as late as 1836. From then on spellings with au and a are both found, but the au seems to have won out.
I can understand and accept the concept of word change bubbling up from a pop cult niche to effect a system wide change – Michael Jackson has a megasmash album and suddenly ‘Bad’ is ‘Good.’ GANTLET/GAUNTLET, though, have always lived in a small pond frequented mostly by editors and headline writers. How is it a word that shares nothing but phonetics with another word supplants that word?

B- POLICE/COP. Until recently (last 20 years) you’d never, outside the tabloids, see the word ‘cop’ used to refer to a law officer, except when bracketed between thug-generated quotation marks. You see it in newspapers often nowadays, at least this side of the NYT and in the… what… seven remaining daily newspapers left in the US. ‘Cop’ never made Carlin’s list, and was never a taboo word, but there was always something a bit unsavory about it. Why did this change?

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/DPS670950 Me Lika Do The Cha Cha

Marina made a Word Game using Cop which may help answer some of your questions. On the pulldown menus, second from the left; is the button for All (the) Words.
I have to “cop” a plea when it comes to gauntlet.
The way to make sure Marina gets word requests is to contain the word/phrase within brackets, so she can search them out quickly. ie. [gauntlet]
She gets thousands of requests every week (she keeps busy). Plus, she reads the comments posted here and in the forums.

  • sheller

Thanks again. [Gantlet/gauntlet] it is. I want to keep them paired because I’m less interested in their individual histories than I am in whatever process led to the apparent triumph of gauntlet over gantlet – to the point that gauntlet pretty much stole gantlet’s definition. Hell of a way for a homophone to behave (I hope gantlet wasn’t two phased by it.)

My amateur, ground level understanding of word change is that new words, and new definitions for old words, perculate up from below. Bad becomes Good because everybody’s grooving to Michael Jackson. [Gauntlet/gantlet] was/were never used that often, save by newspapers, magazines, etc., and other professional entities who must have had a dictionary lying around somewhere.

I couldn’t reply to your comments below. You have some interesting ideas, and I would love to hear more of them. Please check out our forums, two of which apply to the discussion we were having below. Come on by the “Power of Words” or the “Language and Culture” forums. That way the discussion can continue for a longer, uninterrupted duration. We will also prevent the main forum from straying to far from the lighter-hearted banter. Again, I would love to hear more of your ideas.
