Remembered from same: YouTube is the largest player in the space and though Google doesn’t separate out numbers, bandwidth and operation costs make YouTube, like so much of the online video world right now, a money-losing proposition. But Eric Schmidt has time and again stated it will make money. And now there are a few different ways that, while possibly schizophrenic, show the fervor with which Google is trying to meet that goal.

Hmm…. This seems to be concerned with the marketing and business end of things; that is definitely not my forte. I will keep paying attention to the content of the vids. I know Lady M is making several changes throughout, so I will try to keep my critical comments to a minimum until she has things ironed out a tittle.

  • http://captainjack.ws Captain Jack

Oh this is really bad news. I dropped my coffee cup on the floor. This plan…. this move a way from…. Lets just call it ThemTube or google tube. This really is going to have YouTubers want to look for companies to support their video posts. Not drawf them from a corporate presents. How in the heck do they think the YT phenomenon got started in the first place?

Very stupid move on Googles part. They will greatly pay dearly for this misstep or will they? Clearly Google is looking for money and not for innovation. I think the recession had much to do with this division. What do you all think?

I hate this line for I hear it so many times in the industry.
“YouTube spokesman Aaron Zamost. “This is a part of our ongoing commitment to help Google TV advertisers connect with users across multiple video platforms, including YouTube.”

Google is walking away from non-intrusive advertising to intrusive ads. I see we are returning back to the days of cheesy flashing .gif images, but now with cheesy flashing videos. Google is truly loosing sight of what has worked for them for so many years.

I don’t mean to be a [pake] (a word I created which means a jerk, among other things; essentially an all-purpose derogatory) but I don’t really go to YouTube that often. If this change turns out to affect HFW in a negative way I will be bothered though!

    you-tube is Marina’s [sugar-daddy]…music

  • hs4mm

No matter what google does with the “commercial tab” if they leave the “non-commercial tab” alone — meaning retain channels in the non-commercial tab and rank by “most viewed”, it will be good for HFW.

  • http://twitter.com/Strabismus wordlover

Leonard, what links will you provide for us if YouTube ever (dare I say it) goes under?

  • logischabbaubar

hs4mm is right to point out that there’s currently only one source for these rumours, and there’s still the possibility that this is just a hoax. But to me these possible changes seem to be in line with other reports that the Youtube management is shifting its attention from growth to profitability. Yesterday Youtube blocked access to music videos for German users because they couldn’t get an agreement on revenue payments to GEMA (the German equivalent of the British PRS). If this article was meant to be an April Fool’s joke, I would expect it to be dated April 1st and not March 30th.

On the other hand, I would expect that Youtube supplies informations about such a major change to its professional partners like Marina much earlier.

If it is true, Marina should, in my humble opinion, keep in mind that in the professional section her one-woman-one-dog-company would be competing with big media companies, with entertainers that have a lot of staff that writes their texts, their jokes, the topics, makes the graphics and so on. I don’t think that things would become easier for Marina.

  • mentorguard

   It really really upsets me that Google and Youtube are going down this route. I’m sure most of the YouTube celebs will be bribed into doing premium video content for these companies but they’re idiots if they do. They will lose half of their viewers…at least. Nobody likes and having to pay for video content and useless products PUSHED in their faces. BlogTV does that and everyone hates them and some even boycott the products themselves. This is a BIG MISTAKE. I’ll laugh when Youtube kill themselves from getting too greedy…LOL!!!

  • hs4mm

The big-media companies will not be putting out under 8 min videos — they will be putting out long videos that are variants of things they now show on TV. They do not compete with under 8 min channels.

  • mentorguard

The real question is, will you support this change Marina???? I want to hear your opinion on it.

  • http://wired.reddit.com/sexygeeks_2008/?s=top pedanticKarl – Click Here to Vote 4 Marina

Marina, the redesign of YouTube in of itself is neither good nor bad as such. It is the result of that change that may help or hurt you.

From what I have read, it will be a fight of content (the media companies like CBS, Warner, Sony, etc) versus distribution companies like YouTube.

Supposedly the media companies are looking for “eyeballs” to view their content, but their distribution channels are drying up. Newspapers, Cable, DVD and even Digital TV are all antiquated and may disappear. All eyes are on distribution (i.e. YouTube) wired Internet and the winner will be low power RF distribution. (i.e. WiFi, etc) Look what you did in the air.

A lot of you folks are bad mouthing Google and YouTube, when in fact they are or may become the victim. Keep this in mind. YouTube is a distribution channel (think big TV networks) for independent content providers like HotForWords.

Guess who hates those independent content providers? It’s the big media companies who don’t want to lose one more eyeball to HotForWords, etc. If the big media companies can’t bully YouTube into having it their way, then look for them to take YouTube over. It’s at that point, HotForWords and the other independents needs to take matters into their own hands.

I believe Marina was correct when she said last year, that the place to be is the Internet on YouTube. Passive vegetative TV watching on cable or the airwaves will be history.

Many years ago Cable TV made promises of 500+ channels of fascinating content with interactivity. Yeah right.

The fact is that Marina has been ahead of the curve along with YouTube and others. The Internet, the iPhone and content provided by the independents is where the action will be. The question is, who will control the content and distribution? The big fat archaic backwards media companies or the technical savvy at YouTube and the independent content providers?

    Hi logischabbaubar,
I replied to your posting on the Forum and just posted above also.

A site similar to YouTube, http://www.clipfish.de has been blocked for viewing in the US and some other countries for about two years now. Also, the BBC and other European content is no longer viewable and hasn’t been for a while due to distribution and contract rights.

Regarding that article being an April fool’s joke. Even if it were, the truth of the matter is that what you and I are are talking about is real and has been for some time. The fact remains that the media companies are not sitting idly by to let some high tech company and independents rock this world.

  • maxpappy

If they are going to design themselves to be a hulu wannabe, then they will pay the consequences. Google is ignoring the very thing that makes youtube work: it loses relevance if they eliminate the spontenaity of it’s posters. I can see putting restrictions on content; but forcing posters to forfeit their sense of style will only make it a bland wasteland. People like Marina and Phil and Natalie Tran stand out because they created images of style and originality. Dont mess with success.

  • http://twitter.com/Strabismus wordlover

    Hear, hear!

  • hs4mm

The reason I don’t watch TV is because the content is horrible — they are Fredish or worse. The bad part about these media people getting to the internet is that they might bring their bad content with them.

Content is created to push ads, enough people watch a show and advertisers want to feature ads to sell products to them, always has been this way always probably will be. The ads pay for the content, consumerism is now being incorporated into You Tube, it,s not the peoples video platform anymore, sadly it’s profits that you tube is going for and ads are there revenue generator/cash cow. I uploaded a link sometime back to an article about the newer user agreement with you tube that was indicating all the video’s uploaded became the copyright works of you tube, this was the purpose to that user agreement, they can insert ads into that content without fear of having legal issues with the contents creators. In effect stripping the content creators of any other possible use of that content for them to monetize…..Large corporate enterprise is the blood suckers of America.

Free trade is good; size is irrelevant. If lots of people want what a person has to offer in trade, he eventually becomes “big business” a’ la’ Bill Gates and Microsoft.

The reason the entertainment industry and almost all other industries today are so rotten is because they are not free — they have government involvement in them and are regulated. The people running the auto industry just committed suicide by accepting government money.

The internet was new and largely un-regulated/free – hence it thrived.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-8LP9dcu9A freebird

FROM JOHN’S POST….I uploaded a link sometime back to an article about the newer user agreement with you tube that was indicating all the video’s uploaded became the copyright works of you tube, this was the purpose to that user agreement, they can insert ads into that content without fear of having legal issues with the contents creators.

REPLY… So… do we delete our uploaded videos to avoid this? Maybe move to empivot.com or some other provider?

  • http://www.youtube.com/xxstokjrj1xx John

Large corporate enterprise is the blood suckers of America their cash cows or big profits, create a shackle to free trade. The auto industry doesn’t work the way you think. They don’t build a car then try to sell to everyone. A group is identified with a certain amount of money to exploit, then the cars are designed and targeted to those specific groups. This is how big profits create a shackle to free trade. That’s what the internet is becoming a tool of big business to target groups.

The cost of running YT plus ad revenue shared with Posters may be squeezing Google/YT.

If reorganizing helps viewers find what they want and reduces sifting through what they don’t, then it could well help all parties. (Parties = YT/Google, Posters, Viewers & Advertisers.)

I hope it does. Content will be key, and HFW is at or near the top in that category.

On a related note and referencing my comments about antiquated distribution channels, the horse and buggy days of media / content distribution are over. It’s now a matter for the big boys to figure out how to carve it up and put it in a box.

It won’t be long before the last nail goes into the newspaper coffin. The article below makes references to the Kindle and Ad dollars

Murdoch says papers should charge on Web

search engines like Google Inc and Yahoo Inc help users to find stories by aggregating links to newspapers websites and blogs — but then wrest ad dollars from them that they think should be theirs.

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/us_cableshow_murdoch

Notice the key phrase; “Ad dollars…should be theirs.”
That’s why there is a major crackdown on the violation of using copyrighted content.

It’s not about the copyright per-se. It’s about perceived or actual lost revenue. For example, YT user failblog‘s account was just suspended a day or so ago. User Generated Content that funnels Ad revenue away from the big boys will eventually come under pressure from the big boys. Change happens.

  • ealga

    Hey folks…..

    Lots going on here.

Just a bone or two, can discuss permutations later.

First, all newspapers should be your best flatrate connection to the internet in your area.

Print still goes out as advertisment coupons and more.

Content can be divided between before adult and adult, with extra care to make place for XXX and SPAM.

Free access to all websites is a must or $20.00 to every billion one of you’s from me, myself and I.

    [I'm all ears].

A search engine needs to emerge that allows one to pick the multible meaning of a word correctly. Junk, looking for sailing vessels, should not include junk mail hits.

A dollar to register the web page will keep it honest.

Imagine a search engine that is a GUI of an etymologist.Keyword heaven… Keyword of the day.

Play a lot of the internet like a juke box where a penny will get you a play at…..

Where is the explanation of change at youtube?

Whether this will be good for Marina, or other YouTube contributors, will depend on where they are fitted in to the new layout.
What will be the default view?
My bet is that the big money will be what viewers see when they land at the site and, as Marina has stated before, they won’t click away from that to other tabs. So it depends on whether hotforwords will be allowed to occupy a place on the default tab alongside the big corporations.

  • http://uk.youtube.com/user/jamesingtonthethird James

I have to be honest here but if Marina buys into this I think I would be very dissapointed and quite pissed off that she lets people boss her around. She already took yotubes “advice” about intros being more than 5 seconds long but lets face it, what the fuck do youtube know about how long we watch intros for? All they have are fancy graphs. I wouldn’t care if I was the most famous person on youtube, I would not let them boss me around, and choose how I make MY videos. The big fish don’t need to be on the front page because they are already the big fish, everyone already knows about them. YouTube needs to stop trying to force things down our throats, because we only watch what we want to watch. All they care about now is ads, and I will admit it, thank god I do have an ad blocker, because I don’t want to help a big website that puts my videos to the back of the shelf and tries to make money from me at the same time. I really hope Marina doesn’t become like a sheep to YouTube, because, YOUTUBE CARES ABOUT NO ONE! All I am, all you are, and all Marina is is money to them….. Money Money Money. Lets face it, YouTube doesn’t care about anyone unless they make them money, but the still don’t have to care, because they give the people that make them money a small amount of it anyway to keep them hooked, so they won’t leave. It’s disgusting. I think someone should set up http://www.youtube2.com … It’s a youtube where you can broadcast yourself. With out ads and corporate bullshit being shoved down you.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/animalntaz animalntaz

Where, Where!? Sorry. It’s just the Mel Brooks in me.
Yeah, You Tube can do whatever they like with it… after all, it is their site, and so they get to set the rules. But it’s a darned shame, because Marina’s videos have always excelled in quality… so the art has to be compromised for the sake of Google/YouTube’s advertising grab. If it wasn’t a pain in the butt and a lot more work, I’d say to Marina to post up there a brief version of the full version that can found on her site, so she can still do a video according to her own high quality standards.

The navigator and video player will have a different look and feel, with some tabbed categories for premium house fares like TV, music and movies; whilst all amateur and semi-pro videos will be isolated in another tab. They have an advertising scheme in mind which is driving the changes.
Whether it will be a hinderance or benefit to this site, is not made immediately clear from the article. It may have no impact beyond the changes to the look and feel.
We’ll know soon enough if this is movement forward, or just a sidestep back and to the left.

Wow James. I don’t know when I’ve seen you tap that much writing in a single post before. You must be really passionate about this subject.

  • http://omegafinal.newgrounds.com avalonknight

I kinda do like the new breakdown of the videos, but if I can to watch full episodes of a show, I usually just go to their site and watch it there, like SciFi Rewind or SouthParkStudios.com.

The in-stream ads I assume are videos to be played before and after the video? That is kinda disruptive considering Google’s advertising method is more subtle (text ads on webpages; a blurb on the bottom of the screen that pops up for a few seconds, like they are currently doing.)

I am happy about this though, “dimming the lights”. Sure I can full screen the video and not worry about this kind of thing, but I multitask, such as using AIM or writing my next script. I also would’ve liked an option to choose between low quality, hi quality, and HD. But it’s always low quality or HD, and low quality and hi quality. Never all three (assuming you’ve output the video as HD)

Enough ranting, the changes shouldn’t affect you much; if it will significantly, it would most likely positive.
