Homework: The founding fathers were good politicians — they were “ordinary” citizens who were wealthy and who risked everything in order to establish a free society.

Only, in Blago’s case, his [nitwittery] is a result from his fellow Democrats [throwing him to the wolves] to protect their own higher-ups. That’s the only time you ever see a Democrat get kicked to the curb by their own party — when those above them are at risk of being exposed. Every other time any Democrat gets in trouble, they [circle the wagons]. Democrats do this because they figure while it is true that you can’t fool all the people all the time, you can fool enough of the people enough of the time. In other words they are better at the game of politics than are the Republicans.

Republicans on the other hand need to get their own house in order if they want to be relevant again any time soon. Instead of trying to kick people out of the party for not being “conservative enough” (I submit that Ronald Reagan wouldn’t have even been nominated in 2008 given how poisonous the well was), we need to accept our common ground with whatever minor differences we may have amongst us. There’s no reason Mitt Romney should be told by Mike Huckabee (who had a more liberal record as Governor of Arkansas than Bill Clinton did during his governorship there) and John McCain (the epitome of a liberal or moderate Republican) that he’s not conservative enough based on his own governorship of Massachusetts and his mormon religion. Seriously, we have so many major issues and hisotric problems floating around and I got Mike Huckabee, a former Baptist minister, seeing political advantage in exploiting the religious bigotry of some by questioning Mitt Romney’s mormon religion? Pretty unchristian if you ask me. We got John McCain picking Sarah Palin as his runningmate because McCain couldn’t do it, he just couldn’t swallow his pride and pick the guy most in the party wanted him to pick as his VP (which was enough for me to abstain from last year’s election) because he let himself get bitter and jealous about Mitt Romney in the primary. Are you kidding me? John McCain is 72. He was telling us that if he goes down in his 70s like his dad and grandfather did, that we get Sarah Palin instead of Mitt Romney.

Bah….so anyway, as class warfare is a double-edged sword for the Democrats, culture warfare is our double-edged sword. Too many of our guys engaged in it in 2007 and 2008 and the result was the nomination of a Senator who was never really liked much by his own party because the way he gained national prominence was by way of waging minifeuds with his own party to be the favorite republican darling of the democrat-voting media. It may have been hard to win this one anyway since Bush was so unpopular heading out, but John McCain’s candidacy was just like the Bob Dole candidacy only without the conservatism and the good nature and the humor.

Too many politicians, in my opinion, are there just too keep their own jobs, and put that above the greater good. There are many who honestly are trying to do the right thing, but “the right thing” depends on your views.

I would like to see term limits put on all elected officials though. 10-12 years is enough time I think, or 3 terms per office held.

When I was a mere child of 21, I found out what happens to a politician, (Prime Mnister Joe Clark) when he is honest (albeit boring). He will be opposed & defeated… basically because the price of gas would go up (suddenly) to start the process of paying down the deficit. He introduced, the unheard of, “honest budget” :shock:
I was working at a service station (just a dumb kid) and I said, at the time “you watch, Trudeau will come back, win the election & raise the gas prices slowly to levels higher than they would have gone under the Joe Clark administration.” Nobody flinched when Trudeau won the election (2nd time) on the promise of keeping the gas prices down. Because when he was prime minister in the early ’70s, he had set about to change the country over to the metric system. His administration began raising the fuel prices (mostly taxes) slowly (and steadily)… but unnoticed by the general public. Because now gas was measured in litres, instead of imperial gallons, that kept it way under a dollar a litre when gas was going over the dollar per gallon threshhold.
The Canadian public wanted to be told sweet little lies & Pierre Elliot knew it, got re-elected & became world famous for his antics & intelectual abilities & guess what, I respect him for it & I laugh at the whole neccesary circus of politics.

We have very few Native American artifacts (as far as buildings and stuff) left in the US. The majority of Native Americans in the US were relatively nomadic, the few who did have more permanent civilizations had some difficulty keeping their architecture in tact in the face of the US’s westward expansion. The Incas, Mayas, and Aztecs had some totally bad ass societies going on. I believe it was the Mayas who died out just before the Europeans arrived. The other two fell to the Spanish, similar to how the Native North Americans fell to the English (and a much lesser extant to the French). In short, not a lot of ancient stuff left in North America, but South America has some pretty cool pyramids and other stuff.

Sorry for the history lesson, but I got carried away. South America is one of my weak points, imagine how bad it would be if I actually knew what I was talking about. :roll: I have been studying colonial US and the Early Republic lately, and I was just interested in how differently the Brits view this same time period.

there are a lot of things i could say about politicians, but im going to keep this rant PG13 rated. honestly i think that more than half the time, especially during interviews, press conferences, and making decisions that falls under there job description, that half of there brain shuts down or falls into a coma from lack of use. we need people in the government, congress, and especially the white house with a proper GPA, IQ score, and sanity level. hope you enjoyed this rant from Zinnaku.
