Homework: When I was a kid, our chauffeur, Albert, had me do this and it cured my hiccups — drink water but do not swallow; tilt your head back and open mouth (so now you mouth is like a small container with water in it); wait this way until you hiccup again (water may spill out when the hiccup happens); swallow the water after the hiccup; that’s it; the hiccups will stop. The method did work when Albert had me do it; but it has never worked since!

Most hiccups are caused by a kink in the diaphragm and the hiccup is a spasm of the diaphragm trying to correct itself.

    Dear Marina,
It’s good to see a new video tonight. I thought you would take the whole weekend off, this first weekend of Springtime! (In the Spring, we think of love in bloom!)
My cure for hiccups had been to drink a glass of water. The cure you described fascinates me. Perhaps stirring the ice cubes generates some negative ions, and as you drink the ice water, these ions help your nerves to stop that nervous twitch that causes hiccups. Thank you, I think you gave us a great cure, and I’m happy you showed it to us in your video!

I also told him that the boss was on his way to the job we were at to grill him about it and that he(the boss)also thinks you’re stealing materials from him. After about five minutes I ask him if he still had the hiccups, he replied no. Then I told him I made the whole thing up and I was joking. Cure for hiccups:

My 8th grade English teacher taught me this one so maybe English teachers know about hiccups.

    Step One: Plug both ears
Step Two: Steadily drink water for as long as possible.

I’ve never had this method fail me, the only difficult thing is drinking while you’re plugging your ears. A drinking fountain or straw can be helpful. If you’re really desperate take a mouthful of water and then plug your ears while swallowing slowly.

The cure I’m about to disclose has been 100% successful in the 2 decades I’ve been doing it. I’ve never seen anyone maintain the hiccups after SUCCESSFULLY doing this.

Take a glass of water and fill your mouth about half full (not too full, or you’ll make a mess with the next step.)

Tilt your head back and open your mouth. With you mouth open, swallow the water a bit at a time. It can be difficult to do the first couple of times you try it, and you might splash water around (people may laugh) but it WILL WORK.

Marina, I will try your knife trick, but I admit, I’m skeptical. You haven’t steered me wrong yet.

Today’s quote is really weird. In my view, the true measure of a man is how he uses his mind in the pursuit of his own happiness. Regarding treating others, the measure is whether he treats them as a trader would: not initiating force (or fraud) against them, nether wanting to rule them or wanting to be ruled by them, and either ignoring them (letting them live their lives) or, in interacting with them, exchanging values with them.

To get rid of the hiccups, all you have to do is drink a tall glass of water slowly. The ice and the knife (or fork) help you to sip it slowly instead of gulp it quickly.

  • hs4mm

The quote purports to provide advice on the essential thing to judge a person on (“the true measure”). When I judge a person, my primary concern is not with what he does or does not do for others — my concern is with how he pursues his work and whether the key to his own happiness is in his pursuit of his work. Everything else — including what he does or does not do for me or for anyone else — is secondary.

A person who uses his mind fully in the pursuit of his work is good.

People who do not have a productive purpose are likely to spend their time claiming to do good for others while, in fact, making life miserable for everybody — a person with no productive purpose has nothing of his own and is incapable of living his own life; all he can do to “help” others is to steal from those who do produce and give to those who don’t; and decent people wouldn’t want such “help” anyway. That quote can be interpreted to mean that these do-gooders are good people — but such do-gooders are in fact bad people.

Word Request: Patsy. (A peson who is taken advantage of, or controlled by, someone else, usually to their own detrement.) According to Hanibal Lechtor, in the 2001 movie Hannibal, this word is derived from the Italian family name Pazzi. The Pazzis were embroiled in the 15th Century in a conspiracy hatched by the Medici’s enemies the Sforzas, to eliminate the Medici. The plot failed, much to the detriment of the Pazzis, (Or patsies), involved. (Knowing that everything stated in a Hollywood movie must be true, , can you confirm or deny this story? Where did the word patsy originate?) Major thanks teach!

“Mr Evan Truba na pečenie”? Ummm…oh, NO! Just got it! Bob, take note, we have a Slovak punster in our midst :!:

    Let’s see, [kurva] is…whore?!

Actually, the word does have an interesting etymology. [Whore] and apparently kurva both derive from the Proto-IndoEuropean root car- meaning “love.” Originally the term was not derogatory / bad. The same root word gave us such English words as “care” and “charity,” Latin caritas, French cher, Spanish querida, Welsh caru and cariad, all meaning “love” or “beloved.” So maybe if you call someone a whore, you’re actually calling her “beloved.”

I suppose being a curvy kurva would attract more men.

that brings me to a question, could this be caused by christianity entering our lands??? since i know that for example originally KOKOT and PIÄŒKA was used for m/f genitals but after entering of church it is a dirty word….even that we use it like 5000 times per day

блудница- well lady Marina will know better the meaning of this word…but Bludica sounds like ours Bludička -wich where ladys on special nights and if you get to woods in the night they used to have lights and where too nice to handle and if you folowed them you get lost and nobody ever would see you again

HW: The best method for me is to drink a glass of water from the opposite lip. I remember when I was in high school, my father had the hiccups for three consecutive weeks. It actually got pretty serious, by that point. He tried everything (but I do not remember this one.) The Dr. had to give him some pretty serious knock-out drugs, just so the poor guy could sleep. Dad was also experiencing some fairly serious pain in his ribs. They finally went away.

***LossForWords presents another Fractured Philology lesson: “Smart Aleck”***

Since presenting my first lesson on the Russian origins of the term “Smart Aleck,” I have come across a competing account of its origins, also tracing it to Russia.

One Count Aleksandr at the court of the Czar was infamous for his sarcastic wit, barbed remarks, and bad puns. This infuriated his fellow nobles, as respect is highly valued in Russia. Finally the Czar had him executed. “Don’t be a smert-Alek” became a dark warning at court to those making rude jokes, passing into general use among the Russian people.

Americans, hearing the phrase from Russian immigrants, adopted it into English as “smart Aleck,” thinking it meant someone who made wisecracks – unaware that “smert” means “dead”!

There you go – another mystery compounded by your dubious LossForWords.

For your homework, was Weizsäcker a smart Aleck – or just a wiseacre?

If the hold your breath for a long time, the resulting drop in oxygen in your blood will also help stop hiccups. Just be careful not to pass out, though.

  • petrite

I have been told that a hiccup is a mild form of seizure between the two halves of your brain. Anything which calms your brain down tends to help. Notice a lot of the remedies involves feats of holding you breath which includes trying to contort yourself to try to drink a liquid in an awkward manner.. all of which just tends to decrease the oxygen in your blood.. then there’s the scare tactic which shoots adrenaline into your bloosdtream also affecting O2 saturation (at least initially before you start screaming at whoever just scared the S–T out of you). The method of “slowing things down” which was shown to me has also worked 100% of the time for me (although it sometimes requires 2 or more applications). Here it is… I sit down (at least and sometimes lean forward to bring my head closer to the level of my heart) and then I take my forefinger and thumb and slowly apply pressure to my jugular veins just on either side of my throat. (it really looks like you’re giving the “international sign” for “I’m choking” so be prepared for questions). It’s important to know 1) you are not trying to STOP the blood flow.. and 2) you are also not putting any pressure on your throat… so you can still breathe and talk. If you apply the pressure correctly, your head will feel like it’s swelling up like a balloon with pressure. Keep that feeling going for about 30 seconds at a time. Release and keep still for a bit. If they come back… reapply the procedure.

    Next…
 I’d like to find out where the term [jaywalk] came from. Not so sure what’s so bad about the letter “J”.

  • drmichael82

    Hello Marina,

I would like to request the English word [sake] and perhaps also the phrase [for the sake of], infact the etymology and usage of the word [sake]. I was having a discussion with a native Spanish speaker and we couldn’t find a Spanish equivalent.

    Cheers!
    Mike
Homework: to me it really is just about holding your breath. More interestingly: my aunt explained to me once how she cures my infant cousin’s hiccups; she’d take a piece of string, saturate it with saliva, and mound it on the center of my cousin’s forehead.

How do other people traditionally cure babies of hiccups?

  • runawayscott

I miss the old video intros, where you get the little images of Marina and ‘intelligence is sexy’ and that great music. I’m always getting nostalgic.

  • runawayscott

Actually a hiccup is when your diaphragm (that sheet of muscle that causes your lungs to expand) spasms and jerks. It’s just a muscle spasm and holding your breath stretches the muscle.

  • hs4mm

Here’s a story of a woman dumping a man who wanted her to quit her work. I know nothing about her (except for Marina’s tweet which implied that she rarely wears pants). But this act of her’s makes her a good person in my judgment.

If she throws a glass of water at a waiter because the water was not cold enough, that’s not good, but it does not deter significantly from the value she earned by choosing her work over that guy.

On the other hand, no matter how well she treated all people (so that according to that quote she would be the highest sort of person) — had she given up her work to become a piece of meat at that guy’s house — then, in my estimation, she would be a totally worthless person.

As an aside, I do not have any idea of the kind of person that guy is who wanted her to quit her work — his nature is too alien to me. Joe Dimmagio is another such freak — he wanted Marilyn Monroe to stop being herself after he married her! She properly divorced him.

    –Hs4Mm

  • http://calling-muggins.blogspot.com/ muggins

It’s best to approach the hiccup malady in an impirical manner.
Arrive at a conclusion after careful observation. For example,
in the film, “Tremors”, the characters Burt and Heather did not have the hiccups, and they liked to fire off their weapons indoors,
in their “rec room”. So, if you have the hiccups, load up your elephant gun and fire off a few rounds indoors and your hiccups will go away.

Some of those “old wives’ tales” stuck around for as long as the did for a reason. Some of them actually work: chicken soup for a cold, smoke a little of this for your headache, mud plasters for mending bones. Then again, some were just scary.

The point is, we cannot automatically dismiss something, just because we have not yet scientifically proven how or why it works.

An old cure for hiccups one time included swallowing a spoonful of peanut butter while standing on one’s head.

I also have another home cure for you. If you ever get laryngitis and have difficulty talking because you have phlegm around the vocal cords, you can use an old cure I got from my wife. If you have a honeybear half full, fill up the rest with apple cider vinegar. Shake it well to mix it up. You then take a teaspoon of this mixture and dilute it in a mugful of hot water. I guarantee you that it will remove even the toughest crud from your throat. I even shared this with Dr. Cornish, an orthopedist. I never heard what he thought of it. But it works.

Yes there are many old wives’ tales out there. Some have merit many don’t. But there is a secret to all of them that many people don’t know about. The mind…. One example, I’ve helped friend get cured from PTSD. No meds…

Also, when one goes to various categories (such as press, nerdwords etc.) how about a link at the top to a page full of text based links (similar to the links for all blogs or all words)?

One thing I wonder: did paged comments result in a loss of sub-comments because people only looked at the most-recent-page? Conversely, will single paged comments increase the number comments that have sub-comments and the number of sub-comments?

    GO GREEN Marina

  • http://uk.youtube.com/user/jamesingtonthethird James

But your intro is different Marina.

I am going to be brutally honest here (because I know feedback helps  )

I think your intro is different because your are very beautiful, if you used the same intro as you did on the artichoke video (the best intro ever!) I really cant see how people would turn away, also the intro would need to have yourself in it. Remember when I (please tell me how to spell that) made my intro 30 seconds long, that was just bad, and even an intro 30 seconds long from you would be too much, but the old intro I think was fine. I also miss “hotforwords must investigate” *spinning globe and random pics*

Also, to be honest with you, I think these videos are lacking extra information the the older ones had, take the fork video for example. That video got me started on youtube, as the response I made to it was the first video with my face in it.

But I think what is making it hard is the bluescreen, (and maybe a few annotations)

    For example

If you asked me where handsome came from I can tell you it means good with your hands, and I can’t really remember much more.

    However

with out looking at the fork video I can tell you that

Fork came from the latin forca which basically means pitchfork (I think thats how you said it) Sometime in the 1600s it became popular again and its design was based on a torture instrument

Vampire is the same in all languages

Zombie came from the african ( I think ) word nzambi

butterfly comes from the dutch word boeterschijt

duck tape come from the dutch word doeck which means cotton, it is illegal to seal ducts with duct tape.

I have learned alot from you Marina, but I think the bluescreen is distracting, because I find myself thinking

“ooh, that flashy effect of a dinosaur falling down the stairs is funny, how did she do that?”

But, bluescreening works BRILLIANTLY on the guess the word games.

I am not trying to put you down, I am just saying I think lately the videos have been a bit hard to follow. But I have also noticed that this lesson, was starting to get back on the really informative track of things again.

If you used to get 50,0o0 views on a video in 12 hours back when you had the intro, and you are still getting the same amount now, then obviously, it makes no difference..

Finally, perhaps with panacea81 overtaking you and youtubes make-up phase, perhaps you should do a video about the origin of the word make-up

(And even more finally, you used to call your video something like “Punched in the face” the by the time the new one was up you would call it the word eg. “Punch”

This made things easier to find when you search on the channel)

Anywayz, I hope I haven’t bored you. I still do love your videos and keep them going (I still wouldn’t mind a 4 minute long one now and then) I think I can say that even if you made a 30 min video, all of us that are interested in you and what you do (INCLUDING ALX  ) would watch it. I know I would.

I don’t know how to end this, so as its like a story I will just say.

    THE END

@Captain Jack – I don’t understand what your complaint is. Are you saying hiccups are purely psychosomatic? Are you saying the cures are all placebos? I really don’t know where you are going with this. My comment above clearly demonstrated (to me, at least) that hiccups are very real, and they occasionally require a genuine treatment. My Dad was not pussilanimous, by any means. He was a 21-yr career Marine Corps officer, two tours in ‘Nam and received the Bronze Star with Valor. I saw him continue working after the doc tried to convalesce him for walking pneumonia. If he had the hiccups for three weeks, believe me, they were real.

As for how Lady M’s cure works, I cannot begin to explain. I can see several possibilities, though. The cold water, the altered breathing pattern, the cold knife on the cheekbone, any others that I may have missed, and any combination of the above. I definitely do not know it all, but I am smart enough to know that I don’t know everything. Acupressure, acupuncture, chiropractic medicine, all of these used to be discounted by Western doctors, simply because the doctors could not explain how they worked. More and more, Western medical professionals are understanding that many of these Eastern medical practices do have merit. We even begin to understand some of it.

Snake oil? Maybe, maybe not. Like you said, though – if it works, it works.

I must admit I enjoyed the intro portion of your older lessons too, Marina. Now I, and everyone else here who’s honest will admit that we just want to see and hear as much of you as we can. But in this format, your intros just PERFECTLY set up the lesson to follow. And the song, and the “intelligence is sexy”, etc. was such a neat trademark for you.
Again, not complaining. I simply feel like your lessons seemed somehow more “complete”. Is there any point in broaching this subject with the YT people? Love you no matter what!

Now THAT, boys and girls, is a lesson to remember!

    Marina,

After thinking about your saying that YT was concerned about people bailing on a vid that had an intro longer than five seconds…when they said that, were they even paying attention to the success HFW was experincing AT THAT TIME? Were people “bailing” on your vids THEN? Hell, no! Again, a solution to a problem that did not exist.

    Hello Rene,

I’m sure Marina read your comment and has read Dostoevski’s Brothers Karamazov, but she has her own choices about which remarks she replies to. Rarely do I see her answer any questions in or about Russian. My only Russian-related post she answered was Синий Платочек . She doesn’t often get into deep discussions of linguistics, either, aside from the videos themselves.

On the other hand, she will quite often get into technical discussions about computers, website design, technical gadgets, and video productions. Ask her a question about her website, and you’ll probably get an answer.

dictionary.reference.com lists several dictionary entries for the word in question. The Random House Dictionary lists a possible etymology, although the others claim the origin is unknown.

Originated around 1650-1660 (so it’s been around a while), perhaps a dialect variation of the Old English thwat or thwaite, which in turn are derived from the Old Norse þveit, meaning a cut, slit or forest clearing.

This could be feasible due to a couple of villages in Scotland, one each in Orkney and Shetland, named “Twatt”. Unsurprisingly their village entrance signs are tourist magnets :)

  • http://www.twitter.com/mittfh mittfh

Both are classic examples of a [portmanteau] – blending two words into one. The contributors to a certain online encylopædia suggest a rather interesting history for the term itself…that’s got to be worth a video!

And, thinking about it, you haven’t done a video on [Encyclopædia] yet…

  • http://www.twitter.com/mittfh mittfh

Reading a certain online encylopedia’s entry on the subject was quite interesting – especially as hidden away in the references were links to several scientific papers on the subject.

Although (unsurprisingly) the comprehensibility of the abstracts depends on your knowledge of human biology…

The immediate cause appears to be a spasmodic contraction of the diaphragm (the big muscle under your lungs that inflates and deflates them). There’s no conclusive answer as to why humans get hiccups, but one theory doing the rounds is an evolutionary leftover from an aquatic past.

As for cures, apparently drinking water (often in an unconventional manner) is one of the top home remedies. The site also recommends something that’s easier said than done – forget about them (!)

Hiiccups is air in your stomach from what I understand. When you drink coke or other highly carbonated drinks you can get them or any way that traps air in your stomach, like laughing a lot. Also The only true cure is to drink ice water. A few other old wives tales is holding your breath for 10 or 20 seconds. Pat your head and rub your stomach. The last one I know about is burping.

  • rigidman

Oh I almost forgot the best fools tale is to scare the hiccups away.

yes i do have a remedy for hiccups. it goes along with the cause of hiccups. hiccups are caused by an air bubble getting stuck in your you esophagus. the way to stop the hiccups is to get rid of the air bubble. the only thing you have to do is take some sugar (real sugar, nothing like splenda or anything like that  ). now dont just pour it in your mouth all at once. just lick the end of your finger and take the sugar you get on your finger and put it on your tongue and swallow. the sugar will dissolve the bubble relieving you of your hiccups. to make sure you really got it, do it at least 2 or 3 times. it works.

  • philologaster

The hiccup is created by stimulation of the vagus nerve which lies along the path of the esophagous. Eating something dry, bread or the like, and drinking alcohol (which will alter respiration) can trigger hiccups. And is exascerbated by a carbon dioxide deficiency in the blood, created by the forceful expulsion of air by continuous hiccups.

Drinking a full glass of tap water without stopping or breathing into a small sack, in and out for a half minute or so, will usually do the trick.

The uninterrupted drinking allows time for the carbon dioxide to build up in the blood, as does the breathing in and out into a small sack.
