Nerd Word of the Day: Nerdic

ner-dicToday’s word is the “fastest growing ‘language’ in Europe”.. Nerdic.. no.. not Nordic.. Nerdic!

Nerdic: The language of gadgets and technology.. basically the words that I discuss in this column.

The term was coined by the European company Pixmania.com and they tried to say that it is a more widely spoken language than any single European language.

I would disagree.. I mean, while I sit here and Tweet this post to be released into the Blogosphere via my Wimaxed Android phone, through an application that is a Mashup of WordPress and Twitter, thankful that my Blargument with 4Chan has died down over my Rickroll video… I mean.. Nerdic is not a language, right?

Many of these words will work their into the language. We are slowly being Nerdicized. Many people use terms such as “IMing”, “blog” and several others. I hope that our attention to the extra silly words does not cause us to inadvertantly contribute to the problem.

lmao! NO it might be an expression of the EU and the complication between dialects in Europe that they need so many translators… They’ll probably go to Marina(you) for the answer. LOL! What the EU should do it Make it essential just as the majesterium of the Catholic church and it’s universities make Latin or Greek a requirement.

  • http://mentalgrammarhasbeensetup.blogspot.com alex

if it’s not a language, it could be some sort of dialect or sociolect.

  • mukmika.

Aviation has it’s own ‘language’ too, with terms like ‘pireps’ (pilot reports) and so on. So Nerdic may just stay in the computer world.

  • seesixcm6

“Nerdic” could be the name for a collection of terms, but it isn’t a language, even compared to Russian. For example, if I spoke “Nerdic” to you, would I be the “Nerder” and you the “Nerdee”?
In computer technology, processors and capacity are evolving so quickly, “Nerdic” terms will have to change just as fast. I wonder why they didn’t decide to call it “Geekese”, anyway!

Why don’t we play a little buzzword bingo? As long as we limit the buzzwords to nerdic words, it can be fun.

But beware to use the equivalent of nerd words that are used in modern economics for a bullshit bingo game because that could provoke a lot of anger.

  • http://starlon.lyrical.net starlon

I wonder. Is there a such thing as a ‘nerdist’ — as in the equivalent of a ‘racist’ but against nerds? Nah, not yet. That will happen when nerds create artificial intelligence capable of taking over humankind. Then nerds will be outcasts for years till they fix the problem; then a ‘nerdist’ will eventually be a bad thing.

  • logischabbaubar

What’s so bad about that? New technologies that find their ways into our daily lives require new words to describe what we’re doing with these technologies. A hell lot of new words found their way into several languages when cars, radios, TV sets, telephones or freezers became commonly used.

On the other side, words that describe the burdens that our ancestors had to take because they didn’t have these technologies may disappear from the language. The only constant in this world is change.

See viewership at YouTube graph by clicking the TubeMogul button (below the column of Quote and Top Posts) — when you move the horizontal slider, the graph does not settle — one has to move the slider and wait for the graph to settle; also, the y-axis changes.

Yeah. I haven’t said anything, but I’ve been concerned about that too. My observation as an ignorant outsider is that it seems to be related to the shorter lessons Marina began doing when YT crapped out. I have assumed Marina decided not to invest a half a day on a “normal” length lesson that wouldn’t get seen by the usual number of viewers, and so she’s been waiting out YT to get their act back to normal, whatever “normal” is these days with YT.

This is English with tech words interlaced I cant see it as a separate language, more of a style/dialect/jargon of the English language. Interlace these words into a language a person doesn’t read or understand and only those words are recognizable as words of the parent language or the language used to ascertain the word meaning.

I’m very familiar with this language for I speak it well, or at least I used to. :) I have to try very hard not to speak it for many people get confused and I have to explain what I’m talking about. This make the conversation longer and I loose my train of thought.

I just asked a question on twitter, how to get my wife’s mac to respond? the DVD prgrm errored out & the twirly thing wouldn’t stop. Three people came to my rescue. I asked from my PC laptop… from my crappy old IE browser. In the meantime my wife just kept pushing buttons on the iMac til it stopped acting up.
Still don’t know what she did. Isn’t a Mac supposed to be simpler. How does one go about a reboot from the keyboard? ctrl-alt-delete didn’t work.
