I’d like to contribute a couple of definitions that I picked up in a book I’m listening to. “Boondoggle” from the Philippines, meaning backwoods. Later shortened to “boonies“. From the introduction to “Daniel Boone: A Biography” by Robert Morgan, 2008. So, no relation to Daniel Boone who was a backwoodsman. From the 1st chapter of the same book, another definition: “buck“. I agree with wyo550. this demeans the site. we ALL know Marina can do what she wants. That doesn’t make our opinions any less valid. This word, and video, indicates a trend away from the “cuteness” of the site. It will alienate certain subscribers, as it will endear others. I, for one, tend to not want that content. I’ve notice several “celebrity” references of late. This will definately polarize the audience. I vote to stick to your lovely self and words.

I agree with a few of you guys here; HFW seems to be going off on a tangent with this segment. I mean, these ‘Nerd Words’ are really non-words, and I have not seen or heard them being used ever before. I thought HFW is about etymology, Marina, and not a glossary for new ‘words’. It may have seemed like a fun idea, but it is moving away from what drew me to the website in the first place, particularly the references and shout-outs to people you may like, but whom we don’t care much about. I really enjoyed your earlier format, please don’t change HFW too much, Marina.

Nerd words are words that people try to bring into the vernacular. I spend a lot of time on Twitter seeing what people are talking about and this “word” was the most talked about word today on Twitter.

This is just a segment of my website, called Nerd Word of the Day and I think I made it quite clear that I didn’t want most of these words becoming commonplace.

This is an example of how words try to find their way into society. I found it interesting. Plus I found it to be funny. If you don’t get the joke, sorry.

It looks like I am in the minority, here. If we are going to have a supplement to the lessons, called “Nerd Word of the Day,” then why not look at street slang, also? These are words that some people like to use, and the odds are that we will encounter some of this belief set in our lives. These are light-hearted examinations of etymological dyscourse. Marina, you have two responsibilities to yourself: One as talent and the other as producer. Ther producer’s job is to ensure the talent’s success in reaching the broadest possible audience. The talent’s job is to deliver. I have to wonder if the producer in you is now trying to get reciprocal web links to other niche web sites like twitter celebrities (like this gun-packing, hateful ghetto clown Diddy) and in the process you’re risking alienating both your core audience (which was only interested in Marina) and also risking exposing your product as undesireable to both potential advertisers and to executives who might consider putting HFW’s on other forms of media (which could elevate you as talent with larger and more diverse audiences). All of us who enjoy you want to watch you move on with your career and not have to work 18 hour days for the limits that this online world imposes. I’d suggest that, as producer, you post “jokes” like this one on Twitter (where I guess Diddy does his Dis, UNO?) and use links from Twitter BACK to HFW to build your core audience. Keep HFW clean enough (and talent-centered enough) to highlight YOUR talent in a format that is one which any parent would be happy to have their child be exposed to (as I corresonded about the other day… that new cable channel being started out of the studio in Burbank). On that note, I’d also suggest you find some kind of blogging filter to prevent the obscene postings that we saw last night. The producer in you must be in control of this product- YOU as talent- and not let your audience run the asylum and certainly not clowns on Twitter…or Facebook…or Grouply…or whatever other fringe “web excitement” is the hot thing du jour. The web is marginal and will only become “mainstream” as it displaces broadcast. You want to be along for that ride, which is likely to be only 3-5 years away with saturated market penetration of fiber-to-the-home.

Maybe the title should be Non-word of the day? The intention to depreciate or ridicule the words presented in this section is not obvious since, elsewhere, you have indicated that “nerd” and “geek” are good things to be. The current title, Nerd word of the day gives the impression that the word presented here is something good but depreciated by the bad non-nerd people — which is the opposite of what you are trying to communicate. Also, if there are some who continually spew out non-words, maybe HFW can offer an annual Master/Mistress Non-Worder award!

Amos ‘n’ Andy, Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor are examples of comedians who were able to make everybody laugh. No anger or unnecessary cruelty imposed upon their audience. Melika, I actually have not even watched the video, I saw the beginning of it and saw that he was trying hard to make this word a word. I think it’s funny that “Diddy” is trying to make that word into a word.. as it’s so HORRIBLY NOT A WORD!
