but my eyesight  needs larger than that
    B.B.

One more time let me congratulate you for the publicity, Dear Teach! And love the photo (like I wouldn’t, right?).

    Always.

  • originalistrick

Yeah. That would be nice if it isn’t too much trouble.

What’s this fun movie offer, mentioned in the article?
I say, hold out for a James Bond movie deal! You don’t
want to be doing “B” movies before you’ve had a shot
at being an “A” lister. Look what happened to Pee Wee Herman!
Thanks for confirming that you do use templates to
do your post production work. By now, you have a
handle on tweaking your scripts fearlessly – heh heh!
Does the program allow for WYSIWYG editing?
My guess is that it does, and you don’t have to compile
your modules until everything is tweaked and timed.
    Congratulations on this one…
There was a lot of good information from this writer.
Much more fun to read than the “rubber stamp” stories from journalists covering you during the past year.

Hey Marina, way to go girl.

On the left… that is a “Very-Nice” picture of you Marina… way more appropriate than that other one somebody published of you on your knees with a candy cane in your hand!

OOO I THOUGHT OF A TERM USED IN ENGLAND… BLOODY OR BROODY WHATS ITS ORIGINS PLEASE?

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/bsomebody13 bsomebody

Oh cool! Written in English, even. Nice job, Lady Marina!

  • http://www.theendoftheinternet.com/ Chemikal

I liked that it covered this aspect, it’s something that I myself would like to know more about. But right now, I don’t really have the time for anything I would like to do.
    Who invented sacrifices anyway? :P
Marina, I think it’s not fair that you still should have to spend so much time behind the computer.

Igniting Global passion for linguistics is a good way of putting it. Nice article and the advice you gave at the end.

  • http://mentalgrammarhasbeensetup.blogspot.com alex

yeah, a good way of putting it if you can’t tell linguistics from philology. plus, there are no real linguistic discussions in here. not anymore. people state something without giving any reason, any support for their claim. then, if you ask and argue against it, you don’t get a fucking answer. or, people feel like this is not the place for discussing things that actually are related to linguistics.

so, no. no linguistics here. there were better times. serious discussions, good discussions. long gone.
maybe chuanlee is right, though. maybe this isn’t the place for discussions like that anymore. i don’t know. buzzword is not really here anymore. that should tell people something. others are more or less gone, too. i’d never thought i’d say that and i’ll regret it as soon as i submit this comment, but, p11 unfortunately seems to be gone as well. people don’t get involved in debates about aspects of language anymore. i don’t know about you, but it seemed to me that this _should_ be a place where things like that do take place.

instead — well, whatcha got on here? people talking about … yeah, what _are_ they talking about? the ain’t talking about language, that’s for sure. and they don’t get encouraged to do so. i don’t know, maybe i’m still here cause i think that there will be some sort of … language-related thread.

    ah, fuck it, dude.

    Great interview! Go Girl!

  • http://sostire.ca/ BillyB

Buzz started a forum bit on Language & culture, which didn’t get into much of an argument, more of a consensus that cultural differences show up in the way one speaks, or even writes. Predjudices, erupt from somewhere deep down in our souls (I guess) and fear of something different, a different way of thinking or dare I say it something dangerous may be stirred up. I’m not knowledgable enough about language, linguistics etc. to not put my foot in my mouth when discussing (arguing) stuff… Damn I’ve deleted 2 paragraphs of writing because I’m 2nd guessing myself whether to post it or not.
I guess I’m feeling a little too, how shall I say it, unwilling to offend people. You are right though… miss some of the “lively discussions”
Dare I say, even miss the odd wingnut.
Marina just put out a big email invite… I think. Could get interesting.

  • http://vkontakte.ru/id25408688?68581 leonard

    What is a “euphemism”?

Well, if you must know, it’s “the act of substituting a mild, indirect, or vague term for one considered blunt, harsh, or offensive”.

A great number of euphemisms in English come from words with Latin roots. Farb (1974) writes that after the Norman Conquest of England in 1066:

“the community began to make a distinction between a genteel and an obscene vocabulary, between the Latinate words of the upper class and the lusty Anglo-Saxon of the lower. That is why a duchess perspired and expectorated and menstruated–while a kitchen maid sweated and spat and bled.”

    Just a follow up:

I’m making time for those things now…
Ex: Skiing, Driving and digesting the good stuff, all weekend long! :-)
Hope you’re doing good as well…
I’ll check back later, for the new lesson.

If you propose a topic, I will surely join in.
There still is much to learn, that’s for sure!

  • http://mentalgrammarhasbeensetup.blogspot.com alex

there are topics en gros. just look around. people just kind of ignore postings which could be a good starting point for a discussion. you know, like, is “sexting” a word, etc. i think debates don’t evolve naturally anymore. it’s never been that way that someone posted something and said, now let’s discuss this. debates just kind of grew without forcing it. uh. yeah. hope you get my drift. know what i mean?

  • http://www.youtube.com/CheVolay Che Volay

Alex, It is most likely your bedtime now, but I always wonder how did regional accents come about.

In the US ppl pronounce words differently in different parts of the country.

Also I notice while living in Mexico ppl have regional dialects there.

I also posted this in the language & culture topic in Forum.

So how are accents passed on from one generation to another?

I’m guessing Germany has regional accents as well.

    Hey alex,
This must have been your longest comment ever? I liked it. That may get the discussion going. I loved those discussions you guys had back in early 2008. That is one of the reasons I subscribed in June. I learned a lot from those discussions.

Linguistics is not my field of expertise, but the field fascinates me in a variety of aspects. Some of the sub-fields that I am interested in is syntax/semantics, historical linguistics, etymologies and neurolinguistics.

For example, I have read, (paraphrasing) that students in the field of liberal arts, specifically writers are better programmers than, let’s say engineers. Marina might be an example of this. I think both disciplines, writing (language) and engineering are left brained activities, and the one with the language skills would make the better programmer, which on the surface makes sense.

In terms of neurolinguistics, it seems to me that people that predominantly sense by hearing, heavily shy away from technologies and anything analytical as they are mostly right brained.

As far as people go, times change, seasons change and so on. As the months start warming up and there is more daylight, more people will be outdoors. Buzzword hasn’t been on Twitter much either, so I guess he is busy with his other activities. I know I’ve got a ton to catch up on. I guess there is lots on people’s minds such as the economy and such, so “Die Zeitgeist” (no, not the movie) is a reflection of those changes.

That Lebowski video was a hoot. I’m going to have to make a similar video from the Jack Nicholson’s movie “The Last Detail” where the tagline is; “No *#@!!* Navy’s going to give some poor **!!@* kid eight years in the #@!* brig without me taking him out for the time of his *#@!!* life.”
