Normal

Here is another word that has an  unexpected  origin.

Also, please rate and comment on my video at YouTube to help it be seen.

Here is the Anil Kapoor interview.

YouTube is still broken.. but I couldn’t wait forever!  Driving me crazy.  This video will just not be seen.  Oh well.

    Marina,
……I haven’t seen this move, you seem enthusiastic about it so it must be a good movie. I shall try to see shortly.
…As most languages have a punctuation marks for the conveyance of the sense of enthusiasm, do any languages have a punctuation mark to convey the sense of non-enthusiasm? I know this isn’t a word request and is an off-beat request but would seem to fit into your field of studies. People want too know the trivia, perhaps there is a lesson in it somewhere.

Dear Marina, No, I never saw that movie. Even though you work so long and hard producing videos, you still make time to go see many more movies than I see.
From your work as a model, you must have learned about lighting, sound, arranging sets, and prper timing for delivery of your speaking parts. You do all these things very well, now. I’m still learning to do videos by “trial and error”, or experimenting. I aspire to do videos as well as you do them. Of course, Ill never be as handsome as you are.

I will watch Slumdog Millionaire very soon. I checked out the reviews at rotten tomatoes and it scored a very high 92%. It reminds me of the Tibetan film, “The Cup“, which is not such a blockbuster (Slumdog has earned an 1/8th of a billion dollars so far.). “The Cup” is not very polished, but beautiful and fascinating.

Hi! I just recently stumbled upon your videos and I am a big fan!! I was watching your earlier videos and you used the term “pissed” in one of them, so I got to wondering about its origins.

So I would like to request the phrase [pissed off], because I am curious as to how it became slang for angry, and how it became so different from the British meaning where pissed means to be drunk.

Thanks, and I look forward to more of your lessons!!

I was going to paste it here, but it a long post.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/CantwrCymreig Evan Owen

John, this is sort of peripherally related to your question:

Some languages have a word that means “question mark,” so they can ask a question without using vocal inflection as in English.

Japanese ends questions with “ka” as in “Eigo-o hanashimasu ka,” “Do you speak English?”

Welsh often begins questions with “a”: “A oes heddwch?” “Is there peace?”

Bulgarian uses “li” to indicate that the sentence is a question: “Razbirite li angliski”, “Do you understand English?”

Actually this has nothing to do with your question, but since I have ADD, it’s what popped into my head.

  • http://www.myspace.com/webcorruptor webcorruptor

I wish normal women looked as good as Marina. I haven’t seen Slumdog Millionaire, but since I have been instructed to by her royal hotness I will make sure to do so. It got a lot of Oscar nominations. Usually the movie has to be pretty good for that to happen. Also, most of the stars in the movie were relatively unknown, I think it is a safe assumption that the buzz is genuinely about the movie instead of some movies that do well in the box office because they have big name stars. The plot is one that didn’t interest me originally. The whole “chick flick” thing and what not, but if a movie is made well enough the subject matter isn’t always the most important thing.

Thai uses a range of words to form questions.
‘MY’ is generally used for direct questions concerning something in the present or future, e.g. ‘Are you going out today?’
‘MY’ cannot, however be used in a negative question, e.g. ‘You’re not going out today, are you?’, in which case ‘CHY MY’ is used, which is roughly equivalent to the Welsh ‘Isn’t it?’
‘REU’ is similar to ‘MY’ but is less ‘polite’, but is often used in certain idiomatic phrases, such as ‘Sabai dee reu’ (=How are you? Whasssuuup? etc.)
‘REU PLOW’ is used in questions where you don’t know what the answer is likely to be, e.g. ‘Did you go out yesterday?’ and is equivalent to adding ‘or not’ to the question.
‘REU YANG’ is a similar construction to the latter and is used to enquire about completion, as in ‘Have you put up those shelves yet?’ to which the inevitable answer is ‘YANG’ (Not yet).

  • http://toastytech.com/guis/bobboot1.gif Bob

    First define ‘normal’.
If it means ‘average’, you’re right to be concerned.
If it means ‘upright’ and ‘outstanding’, it’s right on the button.

Hey Marina, now that you’ve gotten your feet wet with the green screen, here are some observations. Unless you are going for the artistic effect of shadowing yourself, may I make the following recommendations.

    - Ideally you will want to stand 4-5 feet from the green screen, but perhaps you don’t have the room, unless you shoot down the length of a room instead of across the width. Your shadow is being cast on the backdrop.

    - I’m sure you are using more blur than one would normally use to perhaps offset the sharp cast of the shadow, or perhaps for artistic 3D type effect. Reduce your blur if possible and tweak the threshold levels.

In some cases for me, when I have to stand close to the green screen, I use lights behind me to erase the shadow, which is also more difficult to get even lighting. At other times I bring the screen 2 ft – 3 ft from the wall and light the screen from the rear, which lightens the screen of course, but minimizes shadows.

    Dear Marina,

I am SO glad you are back and what a good word to teach us about. I have always harbored a suspicious dislike for this word as it can convey a negative connotation to being not normal (i.e. abnormal). I prefer to celebrate our individual characteristics that make each one of us unique. This said, I admire Anil as a down to earth and unassuming person (particularly for a movie star!).

Slumdog was fantastic! It’s at times so uplifting as a story of survival, redemption, and love. The ghetto scenes in Mumbai made me cry. I have traveled there many times (have you?) and sadly it is depicted with painful accuracy in the film. The suffering those children endure breaks my heart.

    Namaste, Q

Hello nomusician, I don’t have any good links at the moment, but will let you know once I find them again. If you have some time, go to YouTube or Google and search “green screen” or “video tutorials” or “movie tutorials” or “video lighting”, etc.

Personally, I’ve had good luck with using queen sized bed sheets either colored green or blue. You can also have them professionally dyed to a deep green. Of course, no matter what you use, proper lighting is the key.

Bah! Well, I’ve always requested w/ brackets what I think are interesting words–even using in those requests clever gimmickry, profuse praise and probably flattery even–and so far I’ve been stiff-armed like a mother! Wait. Maybe that’s the problem. Too much brownnosing. Instead of aiming for teacher’s pet, I should be aiming for detention. Hmmm…having to stay after class with the teacher sounds more rewarding than a pat on the head, well…you know.

But honestly, who knows how many of these lessons she shoots and what the average time it takes to make it from request to shoot to edit to upload. Well, actually I bet some nerds do know enough HFW to answer this question with maybe some general, ballpark accuracy.

I loved how Marina is passionate for the movie Slumdog Millionaire. I just saw the trailer for it and it looks like a wonderful movie to see.

On YouTube I just ran across this short movie called “World Builder”, where this man uses holographic tools to build a world for the woman he loves. Hmmmm, what would I build for Marina… the biggest baddest basement of all time with a hundred movie studios and a the largest book library, bigger than 1000 Alexandrias and right below the ocean. The video got me thinking of the word “orthonormal”, meaning a set of inter-orthogonal, normalized vectors.

So in this case, the perpendicularity is conveyed by the word ortho, and normal has been demoted to its second (everyday) meaning of “conformation” – all vectors having norm (length) of unity, or what?

Better stop – or I’ll go crosseyed – Austin Powers style ;P

I have the exact same one, and I have very few problems, if any. To clear out your cache: Tools, Internet Options, under the General tab, under the Browsing History section click the Delete button. That will delete your browser history.

To clean out your cookies: close all IE windows and go to My Computer, RIGHT click on C drive, L click on Properties, then select Disk Cleanup. This will take a few minutes the first time you do it, because you probably have LOTS of cookies in there. OH, BTW, it will only check for cookies, then you have to OK it to delete the cookies. This will take a few minutes, also. Depending on how many cookies you have, it could take 3 or 4 minutes for each step.

I clear mine out at least 2 or three times a week, and I always clean both after I pay bills online. As an added benefit, you can vote for Lady M for Sexiest Geek after you delete your browsing history.

Good luck! May the Random Factors align to your good fortune.

Time for an inspirational story time, I once knew a young lady named Mary, her nickname was ‘No Tits Mary.’

Being small breasted has advantages for some occupations, Mary was a dancer, so graceful was she while performing.
Mary moved away to the Rockies and then years later at a party I met Mary again.

She told me that being small breasted made it ideal for her to become an expert rock climber.

The moral here is, what some would thing is a disadvantage is actually an advantage when the right life path is chosen.

Side note as I said before Mary was graceful as could be on the dance floor but off the stage she was so accident prone, always tripping on her own feet. So I was a bit surprise when she told me she was engaged is such a dangerous sport as mountain climbing.

In the end everything seem to work out well for Mary.

Hey John, “The Postman” is one of my all time favorites. I’ve seen it 30+ times. That movie is kitchy, has a lot of great one liners, great quotes (see imdb), has a great many funny undertones and references such as Richard Starky being referred to as the new president. How many people know who Starky is?

Then, using Tom Petty as the mayor of that one town. In one of the scenes, General Bethlehem pointed to a flyer handed out by the kid and told him (going by memory here) “traitor” was misspelled. There are some great scenes in that movie also. By the way, did you know that the girl rider with the ponytail is Annie Costner, Kostner’s daughter.

I thought the movie was cleverly done and I think all of the funny references in the movie went over people’s head for the most part. Most people don’t get it. Just like Marina’s very clever references, innuendos, and jibs and jabs, ribbing, teasing and good natured fun.

John, I think from what I remember, the movie had bad reviews for many reasons; one was that the movie is 3 hours long, is made (re-written, acted, directed) in Kostner style which goes against Hollywood’s typical formula, and most of the critics are cynics who can’t stand sentimentality and a good yarn.
Wiki had some good words used by the critics that Marina may want to use such as [mawkish] [jingoism].

Well I may have to make an exception in your case since your kinda, well, you know, aaaah, top heavy, sorry.

  • http://www.theendoftheinternet.com/ Chemikal

    Of course!
    Funniest thing was:

I had to stop the car while climbing a huge hill.
The policeman told me to turn off the engine and secure the handbrake, to test my ability to resume driving from a very inclined surface. OK, I got nervous because all I could see was the sky, and forgot to put it into gear. Can you imagine what happened?
Uhh, I went down hill so fast, that I almost failed for passing over the speed limit! =))
Luckily I realized what happened, and did it right the second time. I only got a 6 point penalty out of a maximum of 20 permitted in order to pass.

The next person that took the exam, was a girl. I was the witness, so I rode in the back. After a few minutes, she almost ran over another car, and blocked 2 intersections! Woo, if she ever gets her license, I’m taking the subway! :>

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/bsomebody13 bsomebody

    Another experiment:
Stand up straight facing a wall. With your back straight, extend both arms so the fingertips just touch the wall; this is the proper distance away from the wall. Now, bend at the waist and place your head against the wall at waist height. Place both hands behind you in the small of your back. Keeping your legs straight, try to stand up. Men cannot, yet women can. Men’s center of gravity is much higher than women’s. Even women with nice melons can do this, since breasts are mostly fat, yet the thighs and butt have a higher % of muscle mass.
Plus, it can be really fun to do this at parties.

Definition: singularity: In astronomy, a term often used to refer to the center of a black hole, where the curvature of spacetime is maximal. At the singularity, the gravitational tides diverge; no solid object can even theoretically survive hitting the singularity. Mathematically, a singularity is a condition when equations do not give a valid value, …

This fits very well with a quote I saw somewhere else today:-

“Black holes are where God divided by zero.”
    – Steven Wright

    Dear Teach,

This may be politically incorrect, but I guess that’s just me. How did the word [COME], or [CUM], “come” to mean orgasm?(Pun intended). Maybe everybody else in The Family knows this and I’m simply naive, but I’d like to know about it. You probably can’t afford to do a lesson on this anyway, but I thought I’d make the request.

    Always.

My dear Marian, I would love to hear you pronounce the word, [ludicrous], and research it to learn where it came from.

Also several good friends would love to see you in a turtleneck. Perhaps if the weather turns cool where you live?

Take care and please keep educating those who might not otherwise open a dictionary.

I wasn’t going to see the movie Slumdog Millionaire. But I started seeing it a little while ago because of the homework — and have just finished seeing the scene in which the boy is blinded. I grew up in the Indian sub-continent — and always hated that place and its culture — and wanted to live in the US since I was about 9 years old. There is a saying in one of Conan The Barbarian comics that aptly describes India:

India, the land of The Vidhyas (a mountain range in India), in which the life of a cow is more sacred than that of a human being.

Even today, one can find proof of the correctness of the above description — the blinding incident in the movie is just one example (no one dares harm a cow, but a boy?).

  • errin

Ya, I went and saw ‘Scumbag Billionaire’ with my significant bother because we had free movie tickets we had been waiting forever to use. I thought the movie was different and interesting, but just so so overall, with an extra serving of cheese naan at the end. I would have liked it better had they called the movie ‘The Kid Who Jumped Into Sh*t’… still, not that bad of a movie, just kind of overhyped in my opinion. ‘The Dark Knight’ was the best movie to come out last year, and it doesn’t really need an Oscar to recognize it…

I recall back when I was in junior high in the 80s, there used to be a popular pin-on button that said ‘Why Be Normal?’. Only, we had this kid in our class named Norman who wasn’t all that popular… I remember one of my fellow classmates made a variation of that slogan by wearing a button that said ‘Why Be Norman?’. lol

On a side note, is that a permanent tattoo you have now, Marina, or just a temporary? It looks like it is in the Don Ed Hardy style… as somebody with a tattoo myself, I’ve always been interested in what makes a person decide on which tattoo. It doesn’t look like yours is a permanent one, though. Care to elaborate? :?:

Peace and love, Errin : )

Well see that tells you I never paid much attention to popular fads, Richard Starky (Ringo Star), just googled that one and Tom Petty , I watched this movie with my older sister and she asked me if I knew whom that character was when his scenes came on ,me I never seen the guy before but knew the name when she said whom it was. Music was really not anything that enthused me so why pay attention to things that are only going to clutter the mind? Boston,Kansas , Eagles, Kiss, and various other famous bands, I don’t know the name of the songs, or the artists, I just know the music when i hear it. The story makes sense when taken into account the protagonist supposedly growing up in the time when such things were important to his generation, before the disaster. His character seemed to experience a lot of flashbacks to better times.

IIRC, the word normal is also used in mathematics.. which is the opposite of tangent.. normal line meaning a line made in right angle (i.e. 90degrees) from the main line.. and the opposite of normal line is tangent line…

Do you know this for sure? It sounds like an urban legend. If the red light is visible to aircraft (even if it isn’t FAA-required for the building), it must adhere to FAA obstruction lighting standards, which do not include weird blinking arrangements.

Can anyone verify that the light in question is either steady or blinks in an even rhythm* and does not look like Morse (whether you know what it says or not)?

Well I cleaned out all my temp files and thumnails and a few others that were already checkmarked. I almost deleted my Hibernation Disk Cleaner? before I read online that would be a bad idea. I don’t fully understand what it is for or even if I use it. And I didn’t think I should delete that Error Report thing, with whatever that Windows Vista BUG that everyone is talking about.
Anyway, that C drive bar already showed I have maybe about 9/10 of free space to begin with. And even after all that cleaning, I’m still having the same problem.
I may have to switch to FireFox, like Capman911 suggest, or it could be a minor thing I’m not seeing.

Yes! I remember those ‘Why Be Normal’ buttons. Wow that’s a trip back into memory lane.

Yes it’s a temporary. The last lesson or two I posted a photo of the tat sheet. It comes in a collection of 5 tats. A friend of mine that owns Bikini Beach has collection of Ed Hardy products. He doesn’t have the temporary tats for he not a fan of tats on beautiful skin. I don’t know why people are obsessed with tats. I myself have had a few temps. Kind of fun. Though I’m glad they are temp for I easily get bored with them.

Google Capital Records Building and this is what you get Read the last paragraph

Here I c/p the last paragraph:

After dark, you might notice that the spire high atop the Capitol Records building is topped by a red light which continually blinks on and off. Some people think it looks like it’s sending out a message in Morse Code. It is. The red light blinks out the word “Hollywood” in code, every few seconds. In 1956, the granddaughter of Samuel Morse (inventor of the Morse code) threw the switch that turned on the tower light. This single-word message was changed only once, in June of 1992, to celebrate Capitol Records’ 50th anniversary. For that one year, it blinked: “Capitol 50.” In 1993, it returned to sending the original message: “Hollywood.”

When I wrote “If one has the stomach to watch …” I did not mean that I felt nauseated — what I was trying to say is that I found the scene of blinding the boy extremely tragic and so very hard to watch while it was taking place; and very hard to watch the movie knowing what sorts of things happen in that land.

(By the way, do you still have the TA quiz I ask about here?)

I have a question in my mind right now that is : if you, me, are what i suppose we are, as you already know it, i don’t, why are we yet dreaming, i mean why i yet dream of us and see that there’s a lot of misunderstanding from my part about you? maybe i must wait, maybe i must take initiatives, i, only want and hope you to see me, as you were at the begining. So what i mean is that as you have a large avance on me, why? lol
