A friend is somebody you know and like. Respect and trust are implied, and spying isn't needed. The majority of online friends are no more than acquaintances. Also, there's the matter that if you do find somebody that you want to be a friend and you spy on them instead of give them the trust they deserve, then you pretty much destroy your value as a friend by virtue of your actions.
