I was embarrassed that our Department of State could not spell, restart, in Russian. This ineptitude reminded me of my childhood when we would practice nuclear attack drills in case Russia attacked. I had a wise teacher who explained that we would all be toast if this happened and if we survived we might wish we had not. He asked for a show of hands for those who wanted to continue the drills. We all said, “forget about it.”

I know you were too young to remember those days, but do you have any information from elders about what they thought of the U.S. in the 60′s? Were Russians afraid we might attack? That scenario was not even a thought for the average U.S. citizen. I never heard the other side of the story. Perhaps you can work your reply to the [M.A.D.] definition or [acronyms].

Just noticed, you posted the M/C version of the vid. I saw this one a few months ago… “covering a football pitch every second”. How cool would it be, to drive one of these to it’s max limit. TopGear did a good job conveying what it would feel like to do that kind of speed.

Because he was an aerobatic pilot, he was able to work out that his fuselage had become his wing, his ailerons had become his rudder and his rudder had become his elevators and to co-ordinate them in a different way to regain some measure of control; and all that in just a few short seconds.

One of the first products google came out with that was not related to web searches was email forums. This was sometime within the past 5 years. At that time, forum technology was mature (for example, Yahoo! had had forums for many years) — yet google forums was extremely buggy. It was buggy in terms of usage and also in terms of managing subscriptions — and it remained buggy for years (I gave up on google forums; it might still be buggy). This led me to form a very poor opinion of google engineers when it came to products unrelated to web-searches. The current state of YouTube not only confirms that early opinion but also shows that google continues to have poor quality engineers for products unrelated to web-searches.

Regarding selling cars at 66,600 miles: Honda, Toyoto, and Nissan cars, when maintained regularly, last “forever”. I purchased my 2-door Honda Civic EX 1994 model in 1993 with the thought of keeping it till about 125,000 miles — it now has 156,667 miles — and I have no intention of selling it. While in graduate school, I knew a guy who purchased an over 95,000 mile Japanese car in Seattle and drove it across the country to Rhode Island.

PS: My bumper sticker — have had it since the car was new (had to re-apply 2 (3?) additional times because of accidents!).

The video looked fake to me (I would have expected the pilot to parachute out; and the flip at the end is too artificial), and a google search for “one wing” plan landing brings up several hits. One of the hits is this web-page which claims that that video is a fake and the page has a link to what it claims is the pilot’s web-page.
