Handsome

Here is the origin of the word handsome and its various meanings over time.  They asked Terrell Owens his favorite word last week and this was it :-)

Please rate and comment over at YouTube to help my video be seen!

Thanks!

My hands are the best in the business. How do I know this? Well that’s what she said! What was that? She (well many) said that I should become a masseuse. One thing I learned from my dad was how to make women melt in my hands. My dads wrists were so strong he could lift up us kids with one hand. He used to be a sports writer for a newspaper that used old manual type writers.

Considerable size? What’s does the size have to do with it? Did it mean to extend(ing) to a fair size? Or as in handsome reward? Boy oh boy… This is all just swell and dandy.

Homework: 1701.8+ millimeters give or take a few. My dad used to measure me by how many hands high I was. Right now I’m about 16.75 hh (hands high). If you don’t believe me you can measure yourself.

Randy was a handyman he enjoyed fixing things around the house,… Julie was a bored housewife wore pink chiffon lingerie and indulged in fantasies right out of the pages of Cosmopolitan magazine while she ate bon bons in her bed,… Sam was away on a business trip, his tie he never stained, yet the lipstick on his collar told the story for when the cat’s away the mice will play so if you’re not a mouse you’ll be true to your spouse… cept the bedspread was so inviting

I have found it is best to never guess when it comes to a woman’s weight. No matter her body type it is just not a safe subject.

  • greatestpotential

Sam came home “Oh, honey, I’m home!” where then a wide opened mouthed Julie quickly rose naked from her bed to fetch Randy’s clothing…as Randy was exiting out the window his bare bottom scraped against the unforgiving harsh bark of the sycamore tree…while Randy was attempting to jump and break his fall on a pile of garbage bags filled with leaves Julie had tossed a shoe which skimmed the side of Randy’s face while Sam was continuing to work his way upstairs then hesitated and turned his collar inside out, whew, no lipstick this time, he proceeded to head to the bedroom with his compilmentary hotel bar of soap shaking around in his travel bag…

The site is definitely not handicap-ready if the homework assignment is just flashed on the screen. If one was blind, one could still enjoy listening to the lesson, but would be left out of the homework.

I used to be 6′-3″, but shrank a bit due to being left in the washer too long.

Now, think about what you are saying…
    “Would you like some cunnilingus?”
As you know, that’s a very subjective question.
If she likes you, the answer is “hella yes”, of course.
If she has to think about it … well … ,
she’s just not into you, like that…
Are there any other words you’d like to request?

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

I hope the green-screen business doesn’t mean we won’t get to visit the boudoir periodically and check out her nightstand decorations, etc. or maybe see Gorby—the real one—bouncing around.

Maybe M can do some tricks with it. For example, for the opening scene, she could toss a stick of dynamite “into” her old apartment and blow it to bits before she starts the lesson. That’ll teach ‘em.

I always wondered about ex libris, which phrase I have seen on lables pasted in books to identify the owner. The answer for that is

    .

Any guesses on why the HW question is a text-overlay and is un-spoken? I have a few guesses:

    1) She could not think of a HW assignment while making the video and so left a “fill in the blank” to be added later when she did come up with the assignment.

    2) She did have a HW assignment while making the video, but then changed her mind and made up the current assignment.

    3) Perhaps, for some reason unknown to me, it is un-lady-like for a woman to ask a man his height.

    4) Perhaps she considered getting the answers to this homework important and so used the technique of a silent, text-overlay to emphasize the homework.

5…zillion) Other reasons people might guess at.

Anyway, it is important to speak, to converse, Marina.

I’ve considered your challenge, but I think this is merely a case of pseudopedantry.

Etches very well may be technically made by removing material from the surface, but the definition is to cut into, imprint, impress, engrave into the surface (with use of acid, chisel or other sharp tool, or laser–a frickin’ lazer beam). I suppose I could’ve been clearer had I instead written ‘Etched of’ or rather ‘Etched in’ and perhaps clearest yet had I simply selected ‘Chiseled’. In any event, as with most figures of speech, the answer to your question is easier to understand than question.

I have a question about Russian.

I was watching the Australian Open this year and noticed that Marat Safin has a lil sis who is named Dinara Safina. So does this mean that if Marina’s name is Orlova and Maria’s is Sharapova and Anna’s is Kournikova, that their dads and brothers (or generally all men) have surnames that end without the -a? Messrs. Orlov, Sharapov, Kournikov? Like, -a means ‘of’. Wait, wait, for some reason I think I’ve heard -ov means ‘of’ or ‘from’, and the -a must just indicate female. Are there cases where the male form of the surname of an -ova don’t include the -ov even?

    Hey, HotForWords.
I just recently stumbled upon you/your concept, but already I’m loving it for my procrastination – sexiness and humour combined with actually learning something useful

I have a word request for you as well: I would like you examine the origin of the word [black], which you shortly mentioned in your ‘blackmail’ video – but where you didn’t elaborate on its etymology.

And no, I’m not thinking about ‘going racial’ with the word – which you seemed quite keen to avoid in the aforementioned ‘blackmail’ video (so please don’t use that as an excuse to discard the suggestion!)

I find [black] interesting because the color it refers to is unique in the sense that it is actually the complete absence of color, so to speak (cf. blackbodies (wikipedia)), so the word might come from expressions of emptiness, voids or non-existence etc. and could have a long and rich history.

Or it could just be some word a random dude whipped out 200 yaers ago… Who knows? – I hope you do, HotForWords! ;-)

I know that the Patriots and Dolphins each are teams that like to go after veterans like him–and each have the coaching/front office to deal with him. T.O. was fine in big D under Parcells, who of course is picking out the groceries for Coach Sparano now en Miami. And Randy Moss has been great under Belichick in NE. I’m not sure where they are capwise though. I think Miami’s got ample room, but that the Pats haven’t. Also, my favorite team out west, the Broncs, have been very active so far as the former O-Cor of NE is restocking that team (albeit mainly with ex-Pats).

‘Love dies hard’ breaks some, uh shall we say, mental grammar rules and so as a statement it deftly sidesteps literal translation. One would imagine you’d be one of the first to take such a thing into consideration. I’m shocked and appalled….

So Love hardly dies? That’s not it. Love dies hardly? Or is it “love is difficult to kill?” All good statements, but which one fits the phrase most closely? Remember, you’re under “dead”line.

“i feel badly, at least let me buy you a–”
    “bad.”
    “bad? umm, what’s–?”
“you feel bad. ‘badly’ is an adverb, so to ‘feel badly’ would be saying that the mechanism which allows you to feel is broken.”

“whatever. out. go. sleep badly. any questions, hesitate to call.”
    “bad.”
    “excuse me?”
    “sleep bad.”
“‘badly’ is an adverb, fuckhead. who taught you grammar?”

anyway, “love dies hardly” is ambiguous, so they chose “hard”, i guess.

I’m wondering about the word [DUFUS].

This word seems to refer to an unusually dim-witted or klutzy person. But what is its origin? And especially, what if there are more than one? Is the plural “dufusses?” This just doesn’t sound right to me. A busload of dufusses… Hmmm.

In accordance with the Latin conventional pluralization rule regarding -US suffixes, I like to think of it as “dufi” instead, but then one must carefully pronounce the long “i” sound at the end to get the desired effect. Maybe I’m being overanalytical.

I have a dual request for two related words, [parabolic] and [hyperbolic]. Specifically, how these words describe both types of curves and ways of speaking. Dictionary.com says they’re derived from the Greek ballein, to throw, which makes sense for parabola and hyperbola, the curves. It also says that hyperbole literally means “throwing beyond”, i.e. exaggerating. That still leaves me wondering about parable. “Throwing beside” doesn’t seem to make as much sense

I don’t know what word Adam originally used for his wife, but Genesis records that he said she would “be called Woman {ishsha} for she was taken out of Man {ish}.”

  • stigmatasaurus

Same for German. “Mann” doesn’t resemble “Frau.”

  • stigmatasaurus

But I see your point about words that have very ancient origins. We can’t go back beyond Proto-Indo-European, and even that came after the Tower of Babel.

Purcells would rather eat worms than pick up T.O..
I thought of the Broncos, but I think they’re too stingy
to take a gamble on “the mouth”. But, things are radically
different because they got rid of smilin’ Mike Shanahan.
Who knows? And what about the Chargers? Or the Cardinals? It’s all speculation at this point. You’d have to wonder which team would want to taint the morale of their team by picking T.O.? Terrell would be advised to hold a press conference and tell the world he’ll turn over a new leaf and become a silent veteran, and tell his agent to restructure his contract way cheaper.

  • http://bit.ly/T1z2p Captain Jack

    Try again CampKohler.

The adjective ‘far-fetched’ first appeared in the mid 1500′s replacing the earlier term ‘far-fet’ meaning forced or strained. ‘Fetched’ comes from the Old English ‘fecchen’ meaning to go and get. “Far-fetched’ describes something that was gotten from afar. It came to mean something that was unlikely or a far distance away from the truth.

If I remember correctly, it looks like the first one at http://www.asp-shareware.org/users/how-to-download.asp. So, instead of HFW, you get the box. Other sites open OK.

I decided to reinstall 7, but saw that there was an 8, so I did that. It worked, but did some things I didn’t like. Rather than wait until the next free tech support hour, I tried to go back to 7, but MS wouldn’t let it happen (newer version detected). So, I deleted it and tried to use System Properties to put 7 back. No go; IE would close shortly after starting. I tried system restores, but things got worse. (I ignored the wise advice, “If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.) I wound up taking the PC to my nephew, a head IT guy at a school district. After futzing around for over an hour, it was clear that we could not get a new reload of 7 to work. Rather than start over with an XP reload, he put on Firefox and now it works.

There is something of a defeat here, not being able to cleanly delete all of 7 and reload it. This should be possible. I would like to have what they call a distribution pack of 7, which, rather than asking MS to download 7′s files over the ‘Net, simply copies them from a CD. But I don’t know if there is such a thing for 7 (or Firefox, for that matter.). Anyone seen these critters?

I had to install an add-on to open new tabs to Google, but otherwise FF seems to work well. Oh, well.

Okay, you get to choose from 2 possible responses:

1.) What. You callin’ me a yankee? Watch it, pal! Why, I oughta…

2.) One more tug on my “cord” and you’re liable to win the “pull-it surprise.”

  • http://bit.ly/T1z2p Captain Jack

Always, always, and always update your software to the latest version for they also include security updates that will protect your system.

Going back to the old software? That’s a big no no. Never do that. It will mess up your system worse than before. Code gets replaced when you upgrade IE. When you go back to the old stuff it doesn’t know what the new stuff is for and freezes or ignores it. When my clients did such a thing I just backed up their data and reformatted their hard drive.

This is one of the reasons I dumped everything MS. Their stuff is broken and will never get fixed. They need to drop everything and start from scratch. Apple did it twice and they proved that it can be done.

I haven’t use IE in years. Why do you think so many people use FF? Because it’s many times better. Google chrome might be the FF killer. Safari is not holding ground very well. I’m hoping the next update will get it up to speed.

I think you will be happy with FF. There are many plugins you can add. Some plugs are good and some suck. I tend to download plugs that let me do things that the everyday web surfer would care less about.

At one time people were deathly afraid of being buried after being mistakenly declared dead. Some arranged to have a cord lead to the surface where a bell could call for help should the “falsly-deceased” awaken in the coffin.

I suppose a grisly joke would be to put about a two foot length of cord down through the hole in the coffin lid, so if they pulled it, they would get a short piece of rope and realize there was no help coming. (Ha, ha, the joke’s on you, buster.)

Flaming is just bad on this site. There are many other sites for people to do that on. Constructive criticism is a different ball game all together.

Many people in this world are very smart. They just don’t know it. It’s like a muscle. Everyone has muscles, some small some large. Anyone can go to the gym and build up those muscles. People an also build up their minds. My parents say my little brother isn’t that smart. On the contrary he is very smart. At times he is even smarter than I. I go to him from time to time for advice or knowledge and either he knows it or he doesn’t. He doesn’t try to BS me. Well he does but he smiles first so I know it’s BS.

My brother had brain surgery. We always knew he was nuts. LOL Seriously he had epilepsy and the surgery cured him nearly completely. The only draw back was he could not remember some of his passed. Yet the data was still stored there. He just had us talk more about a point in time until he was able to build new pathways to those lost memories. So he asks us to always try to push him more so he can recover what was once lost.

Evan is indeed a name – we have one in our midst at hotforwords.com, famous for his punning humour – and essence means a property or specific difference of a person or thing, particularly an ethereal or spiritual quality that defines that person or thing.
Might Evan-essence therefore mean the dying art of making puns?
Or has he gone the way of so many celebrities and given his name to a new perfume?

  • niteowl

About 6′ 1″ in the light.

With the time change coming, I wonder if we might get a word like horology, or something similar.

Every time I hear it, which is rare, granted, it always seems like it has something to do with prostitution. It’s a good thing some words aren’t based on their sound.

As always, thank you for your consideration. Even at such a late post.

[woman] woman-man, alteration of wifman (plural wifmen), a compound of wif “woman” + man “human being” = woman-man. I don’t have dates for this. :-(

I realize that this is not your typical fare, and it would, perhaps, require some bleeping… but I am wondering where the term [the shit's gonna hit the fan] came from…. I didn’t see it anywhere on the list of words you’ve covered. Any help is appreciated.

  • jake the ripper
  • thegorn

Here , found this…Similar to “wifman”, males were referred to by the Old English word “wapman”. Having lost this, their gender defining prefix, it might be said that males have lost a significant identifying characteristic. The term used to refer to males has been neutered. (Ouch!)

  • http://bit.ly/T1z2p Captain Jack

Yes there are some missing shows. I think I have them on my hard drive but that drive crashed. I’m still pulling data off if it. I should have had a back up system going but just have not found a solution that works best for me.

Ok, I watched it again and I heard her say that. Thanks for finding that for me. I have an amazing memory. I just have a heck of a time recalling. Interesting thing is I can remember vividly when I was 3 – 5 years old. I even remember crawling and my last day breast feeding. But over time there is just too much information and tend to loose track.

  • http://bit.ly/T1z2p Captain Jack

    Ignore this comment above ^^

  • thegorn

here’s some more…On the other hand, one could also say that the word “woman” is a monument to the fact that women are fully human, or more interestingly, “woman” defines the woman as being a type of “man”, while males (“wapmen”) are just another type. Who needed etymology to figure that one out? It’s self-evident.

The only way your friend could have that happen here is if he made obscene or inappropriate comments. Was your friend making obscene or inappropriate comments?
If so, I would likely know about that. While it is possible Marina may have seen something along those lines and taken corrective action, there is no indication of any made in the Inner Sanctum. This only leaves the possibility that the trouble is at your (er, your friend’s) end of the line.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com Marina

WordPress has a built in feature that if you post the same comment over and over again it doesn’t let you. Also, if you make comments too quickly, I think it slows you down. Most people never hit those thresh holds, so it must have must been REALLY fast comments.

I rarely, if ever, remove a comment. And I especially did not remove any in the last couple days.

Before my big cat—Her Royal Majesty—died, I kept Sweetie Pie at my shop and visited her every weekday. Back at the office now, she’s fine. Is she emotionally spoiled now, just like us? When Sis goes to Europe in May, will Sweetie Pie deposit large peanut-brittle-like puddles all over the shop floor again? Any cat psychiatrists out there?

I hope it is not like this…—…Predestination is a religious concept, which involves the relationship between God and His creation. The religious character of predestination distinguishes it from other ideas about determinism and free will. Those who believe in predestination, such as John Calvin, believe that before the creation God determined the fate of the universe throughout all of time and space. Predestination is a decree by God that there are certain souls that were previously appointed to salvation.

    Yawn.

While we’re biding time ’til next lesson, has anyone else encountered Virusdoctor-online.com? It popped up on my screen last night with a message that my computer was critically endangered by viruses, with a prompt to “click here” to remove them. Turns out the message is bogus, and the site installs some sort of malware on your computer if you do click it.

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
    Jump to: navigation, search
Ludibrium is a word derived from Latin ludus (plural ludi), meaning a plaything or a trivial game. In Latin ludibrium denotes an object of fun, and at the same time, of scorn and derision, and it also denotes a capricious game itself: e.g., ludibria ventis (Virgil), “the playthings of the winds”, ludibrium pelagis (Lucretius), “the plaything of the waves”; Ludibrio me adhuc habuisti (Plautus), “Until now you have been toying with me.”

Here’s a noun for you:
    prevarication
    1. prevarication – a statement that deviates from or perverts the truth
    lie
falsehood, untruth, falsity – a false statement
fib, taradiddle, tarradiddle, tale, story – a trivial lie; “he told a fib about eating his spinach”; “how can I stop my child from telling stories?”
jactitation – (law) a false boast that can harm others; especially a false claim to be married to someone (formerly actionable at law)
whopper, walloper – a gross untruth; a blatant lie
white lie – an unimportant lie (especially one told to be tactful or polite)
    2. prevarication – intentionally vague or ambiguous
    evasiveness, equivocation
equivocalness, ambiguity – unclearness by virtue of having more than one meaning
untruthfulness – the quality of being untruthful
    3. prevarication – the deliberate act of deviating from the truth
    lying, fabrication
falsification, misrepresentation – a willful perversion of facts
fibbing, paltering – a trivial act of lying or being deliberately unclear
    .
    An example of usage:
Al Gore prevaricated the facts about global warming.

Out of curiosity I looked up the word bank, at http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/bank and I got the following…

“The name bank derives from the Italian word banco ‘desk/bench’, used during the Renaissance by Florentines bankers, who used to make their transactions above a desk covered by a green tablecloth.”

But how did that word bank come to its other meanings like the one listed above? Or was this even the first meaning of bank to begin with?

Because I have come up with Banks (Financial), Bank (Turns or Shots), Bank (sea floor), and a few others.

I’m alergic to the pesticides in bovine products. I’m ok with small amounts but since the US farmer double the dose in 1995, I’ve been having issues. Old information states that California pesticide use data show that between 1991 and 2000 almost 2 billion pounds of active ingredients were applied in California alone. U.S. pesticide use is about 1.2 billion pounds each year, and worldwide pesticide use is about 5 billion pounds each year. Source: http://www.pesticideinfo.org

  • http://www.youtube.com/xxstokjrj1xx John

It was interesting untill it got to the part with all the abuse.

  • http://sostire.ca/ BillyB

The songwriters collection society have it all wrong. My 19 year old son buys so many albums & stuff, because he hunts for & finds music on Youtube & related sites. I’ve hunted for & found stuff I didn’t know existed. When Y/T took the Chet Baker stuff off a year or so ago, I thought “How are new listeners & fans to this great artist going to be found”. His fanbase will die out if the old ways are hung on to. Gift cards to buy music are available for downloads of individual songs etc… I know, not everything gets paid for, but with ipods etc. having room for “60k plus” songs, no kid can afford to buy $60,000.00 worth of songs. I don’t think the answer is to call anyone who has a free downloaded song on their vid or ipod, a criminal, when a guy can kill & eat parts of another bus passenger & not end up dead, or at least with a criminal record.
New artists are being discovered, such as this one, another one woman show… Theresa Andersson, who depends on exposure to expand her fanbase. If YouTube has to “turtle” & pull too many vids. they may go into contraction instead of continuing their incredible expansion.
    Rant over… sorry

*damn I closed this window on what I have been typing on

I have been reading a bit about how some of the divisions YT has been making might have a profound effect on it’s future. Other corporate videos hosts are positioning themselves to take a larger piece of pie from YT. One thing that is true in auto racing that is true in business is you get behind the lead car and wait for them to make a mistake. When they do that’s your chance to pass and take a strong lead.

What amazes me is that some video producers put all their eggs in one basket by only using one video host. To survive a technical issue in any business one must have redundancy. Airline jets have back up systems. Retail stores have mechanical machines to charge credit cards. so on so on…

  • http://bit.ly/T1z2p Captain Jack

This is a good example for that I wish more people used the Creative Commons licenses to make it easier for people to share and build upon the work of others, consistent with the rules of copyright. The creative commons licenses and other legal tools to mark creative work with the freedom the creator wants it to carry, so others can share, remix, use commercially, or any combination thereof.

For an example of how CC license works with copyrights watch this video:

    http://bit.ly/TD3iu

If you don’t quite understand there are many more videos the give you other examples of how this all works. Some are quite entertaining some are just OK but take a look:

I think it’s time that we the people start taking responsibility of how we protect and exercise our rights on our work.

    Hello Captain,
Marina actually answered that question sometime early 2008 here on this site. I think it was just before or during the time that the YouTube partnership went into effect.

Paraphrasing Marina, she said something to the effect that YT was were the action is and that the payoff would be better once the partnership went into effect.

Now that a whole year has gone by since the inception of the YT partnership, and lots of things have changed, it would be interesting to see what Marina thinks today.

Yes I remember her comments last year about why she is only on YT.

I see Buckley post videos from other video host on his website. He uses viddler and blogtv. In other words if YT went completely dead it wouldn’t put him out of business. He’s a very smart man. He understands the importance of redundancy. He also knows how to put on a high quality production on the cheap. Have you seen his studio lights? He’s very good at marketing himself. I can tell he’s been in the busi before.

Yes it would be interesting to see what she thinks about them today. But Im willing to bet she wont say a thing. She is not going to comment on about the hand that feeds her.

The category was ” hottest women ,” and Lady M brings so much more than just sexuality. She is very funny, exceptionally smart (actually geeky smart,) compassionate, and has a dedicated work ethic. I think these qualities make her exceptionally hot. Maybe it is semantics again, but I see a huge difference in simply sexy and being totally hot. Based on the name of the category, Lady M is most definately the “hottest woman of YT” – period. :!:

    Amen to that bsomebody !
You said it perfectly. Marina exudes the best of the best of the best in every category. Her physical attributes are only a very small part of it. It is her spirit that encompasses it all. Without that animating life force, there is nothing and that lady host is very smart in recognizing that as the Captain has said that also.

    As I have said many times before;
Marina is the Hottest woman in the Universe!!!
    Intelligence is Hot!!!

What part of California? You see, we have large tracts of land interposed between the normal persons and the whackos that live right on the edge of the continent. These act as buffers and sponges; they buffer the earthquakes and soak up the tsunamis. This arrangement comes from long years of experience living in the heartland.

Now, you have to understand that we haven’t sorted out flying anvils yet. Should they drop out of the sky, we defer to Boiseians*, who have seem to have that problem solved. (BTW, I stumbled upon this building while exploring Boise in the 80′s when it was still a school district administration building. They had just had the roof re-tarred to fix a leak and had put back only a fraction of the original thick layer of soil over-covering, giving the roof the pathetic appearance of a starving horse with its ribs—the concrete beams—protruding. Nowadays, the purpose of the thick walls and roof is not to keep the unbearable overpressure out so much as it is to keep it in.)

    *Or Boise-ites, take your pick.

Going to the gym and then steam room.

Either she’s so hot that she goes to the steam room to cool down after her workout, or …
She gets her gym. membership free in exchange for heating up the steam room. :???:

Hello, Marina. I’ve been watching your videos for some time now, and I think your way of getting people to learn what some words mean, is quite brilliant. =)

I think I would like to request a word for once.

    [Darkness]

It would be great if you could do a hotforwords session with the word I have requested!

    Thank you for your time.

Way kewl! I hope that woman interviews you, she knows a quality woman when she sees one. If it’s the guy, tell him to be nice or else the HotForWords student body will be on his case, except aLx of course, and we’ll use some big words on him we learned from HotForWords.

Hey James, nooooo, I don’t gots no two iPhones from CC.
If I did, I would tell you and taunt you. Just kiddin.

If they do send me one, I’ll let you know.
My guess is that CC will send it to the 4th runner up in the most viewed videos category which was a woman.

You are correct that I would have also received the 3rd runner up prize for number of views, but since I won in another category, they will probably award it to the next person in line after me.

So far, I have not heard from them.
