I have never been to 4chan before and probably will not go there again. 4chan is not mentioned among the Top 100 websites in the US.
It was terribly hard to follow you in this video. One reason for this might be that English is a foreign language for me and that I don’t have much opportunity here to practice my English. But contrary to your older videos you didn’t pause, you constantly talked about things that I’m not familiar with.
Has “rickrolled” really appeared in a serious dictionary or is it just another word word creation that will disappear as fast as it spreaded on the Internet?

I had to listen a few times before I understood this lesson.
(First a disclaimer: I had made a rule for myself that I would not comment until something having to do with talking happened; but I have been forced to break that rule and comment before that talking-thing happened: the lyrics of the song Never Gonna Give You Up are so good that I have to break the rule to acknowledge its goodness.)
Anyway, what I learnt from this lesson: There is a lot of shit happening on the internet; and crappy, low-life people are attempting to spread that shit by using pseudo-intellectual terms such as “meme”. The site 4chan appears to be leading site for such people; and a cesspool of cacology and of the shitty happenings (“memes”).
I suppose it is OK to explain the word “rickrolling” and ridicule it (poke fun at it). But the aspect of ridicule is present only if one spends time thinking about the lesson, identifies the issues involved, and correctly evaluates them as a form stupidity. It is likely that this type of ridicule will be lost on some people and this site will start attracting riffraff. (Perhaps having a home-work question of what do you think about the phenomenon of rickrolling and memes might help generate some thought.)

PS: The way to shorten the time for a video is not by a rapid-fire delivery (that does not give the listener any time to register the thoughts being uttered) but to edit the script. Rapid delivery is a false short-cut — it actually leads to unintelligibility. (If one listens to this lesson several times, with use of the pause and rewind buttons, one does eventually understand what is being said. This video is not effectively 1:35 long!)

Have you noticed, that YouTube video makers are developing a little bit of a dialect of their own, when it comes to talking about making & posting vids. When they talk to each other the tone or watever you call it changes & the technical stuff that bounces off of me, seems to be absorbed by the respondant.
Following some folks (especially mareketers) on twitter, I pick up on a kind of insider language with a bit of a “Rah Rah” attitude… assosiated I guess, with the Tony Robbins type followers.

Now, regarding the issue of whether the term “rick roll” will be a permanent edition to the English language, I don’t believe it will. Not that I doubt the power of the internet to make lasting contributions to regular language, but the term “rick roll” is pretty much exclusively limited to its literal meaning. And the act of clicking a link with the intention of seeing one thing and getting the Rick Astley video isn’t really applicable to any other situation that would make “rick roll” a really widespread term. And Nancy Pelosi recently rick rolled people on YouTube, which is pretty much a clear sign that rick rolling is well on its way to the grave.

The way Gladwell discusses it is more like [making mountains out of molehills]. Exaggerating an issue completely out of proportion by taking a singular event out of context and exploiting the ignorance of the masses into having faith in a faulty belief system.

Yes, I’ve been to 4chan a few times. It troubles me: you hear about Anon doing good things some of the time, like protesting the Church of Scientology, exposing people with child pornography, and more recently, bringing animal-abusers to justice. But at any given time when you go see what the /b/tards are up to, it’s pretty much just a cesspool of internet-obsessed people desensitized to everything wrong in the world. They’ve all got their heads unbelievably far up their own asses, but I don’t deny their ability to spread memes. Toysjoe gave a list of memes below which pretty much exhausts all the memes with which I’m familiar, except maybe for an hero, Chris Hansen, Rule 34, and hypnotoad. But oh well, my own generation has always bewildered me.

I have never been to 4chan. That is not my forte. This video was more light hearted (from my perspective,) and I can appreciate that. Others are a little more tech-savvy, and these topics may be of more interest to them. I also like to gain some new knowledge that is not in my direct line of study. At any rate, it was still fun. What is the purpose of a swing set, a merry-go-round, or a slide? They are fun, and fun is good.

After having watched this video, I was struck with the thought that it would be a good idea for hotforwords to investigate the word [meme] itself. At first, I thought it might be related to the French word “même,” which means “same.” Thinking that, I pronounced it as mehm until I later learned it was pronounced meem, and now I have no idea where it came from.
PS: After I started writing this, I scrolled down and saw Karl not only made the same suggestion, but did so in an earlier lesson. Kudos to you, Karl, I admit I shamelessly stole your idea.

Though, etymology doesn’t seem to be a popular topic at all, you don’t get much etymology on popular websites or on TV and radio. It seems to be neglected in schools. Nevertheless, words and their meanings determine the way we think, and the people who have the power over the words are the really powerful ones.
You’re a teacher who gives lessons on the internet. That’s nothing special too. There are legions of teachers that are trying to give lessons on the net.
You’re excelling all the other people who are publishing on the internet because you manage to mix these three things up in an incredible way. The first impression that someone gets when he watches one of your videos for the first time may be “BOOBS!!”. But your first-time-viewer very soon gets another impression: “BRAIN!!”. Your videos are both entertaining and instructive,
Nearly all your videos are brilliant, but some of them are even more than that and gone beyond terrestrial spheres. Want to know something about the origins of the current economic crisis? You’ve established terribly high standards in your past 400 videos. My reading of most of the critical comments here is that a lot of people think that both your “rickroll” and your “sexy” video failed to meet these standards. You’ve varied the speed of your talking, you’ve spoken slowly when it was necessary so your viewers could understand you. You’ve completely failed to do that in this video. An egg? A duck? Rick Astley? And then there is that word that I couldn’t understand. This time, your Russian accent wasn’t cute. I simply couldn’t understand that you’ve said “I’ve just rickrolled you”, and I guess I wasn’t the only one. The word “rickrolled” wasn’t written out, contrary to difficult words that you’ve dealt with in your past videos. You’ve spoken very fast, you didn’t pause, and there is no music sequence that gives your viewers the chance to rethink your words. I guess the only ones who could understand this lesson were some twittering hardcore-Youtubers and the unimportant script kiddies at 4chan.
In both your “rickroll” and your “sexy” video you don’t appear as playful as you did in most of your past videos. There’s not much in these two videos that make them outstanding.
I wouldn’t have watched the whole “rickroll”-video if i hadn’t noticed your brilliance before. I would have thought “What’s that garbage?” and clicked away after 30 seconds. It wasn’t captivating like most of your past videos.
About 4chan: This website is sometimes compared with the old Usenet. In my opinion, this comparison doesn’t fit. In the old Usenet, new things were created. One of the most famous examples is the Linux operating system that was baked there. That’s what the nerds of the old Usenet will be remembered for. But what is it that the kiddies at 4chan will be remembered for? What have they created? The only thing they’re noticed for is destruction. They’re barely mentioned in my country. For example, Heinz Heise Verlag does only mention them in connection with the takeover of Gov. Palin’s Yahoo account, with their confrontation with Scientology, and in an article headlined “Troll’s Paradise”. There, 4chan, among some other websites, is called “the Internet’s cesspool”.
Contrary to the kiddies at 4chan, you’ve created something. They’re not playing in your league, they’re playing far below your level.
But it’s not up to me to give you any advice. As I’ve said before, you’ve already shown your brilliance to the world, you’ve become a [celebrity], and you deserve it. You didn’t have to listen to what the members of the community that you’ve built around you say, and you definitely don’t have to listen to someone like me who’s just here for a short time. If you feel
that you have to change the style of your videos in order to make them shown on a prominent place on Youtube, if you feel that you must not exceed 1:30 min, I won’t complain.

I don’t believe “passing around” is a legal way to void a copyright; it’s not like a trademark going into public domain because of common use outside of the product or service identification. (Just try “passing around” Mickey Mouse or some other Disney property and see how far you get.) BTW, since ’76, when the U.S. joined the Universal Copyright Convention, copyright attaches at the time of creation to all works with no action required by the creator, including a copyright notice like the one at the bottom of this page; it’s automatic, so everything is copyright unless negated by the creator (by, say, a stated license).

WLIU, I’ll bet it has the same root as plumbing, namely lead (plumbus), which might have been originally used for plumb bobs when they got tired of looking at rocks. I just bought a cheap Chinese padlock this morning, and one of it’s features is listed on the packaging as a “laminatch guard bumper.” They slip a simple blue plastic band around the bottom of the lock so that, over time, it won’t scratch whatever is being secured. (I discard this so it won’t look like a… uh, cheap Chinese lock.)
Not having ever seen [laminatch] before, I Googled it and found matches on just a few foreign-language pages, none Chinese. One spoke of it as a material that would be engraved upon, say for making a sign. It was also used as a nickname on a Russian photo site by one Leeloo Mina Lekatariba Laminatch. That would be some coincidence, wouldn’t it?
Any ideas where this came from? Are the Chinese making up words now?

C’mon CK. It was fun. I agree that this was not the hard-core entomological lessons that I really get into. I truly appreciate when Lady M takes a word all the way back to its fundamental origins; this often sheds a new light on what the word really means. I think it also says alot about people in general, how we manipulate word meanings based on the context of the place and times. I also think that it is good for me get out of the comfort zone and look at some aspects of society that I normally do not attend. This word (okay, the last few :roll: ) have been more lite and fun. Playing ball with my grandkids may have some substantive benefits, but the bestest part is that we are having fun – together. :grin:

Yes, the FTW video’s best position so far was #33 (p2 #13).
iJustine has had only three different videos on the board so far, and has a similar appearance on the Popular board as your videos as they all started on Pg 5 or Pg 4.
My database shows that 1,007 videos had their initial appearance on the Popular board on Pg 2, many with low views from 1000 to 5000 and most geared to younger demographics. I’ll put a partial list up on the forum on Thur and will also post some very interesting graphs.

Uh, no. Those are the English names for those countries. For example, Germany is actually called Deutschland in its native tongue, but the French call their next-door neighbor (Germany) “Allemagne.” Nobody calls it Germany except us English-speakers! Of course, this does little to address the initial subject: whether suffixes -ia or -istan have a translatable meaning. My guess is that they both mean the same thing as placing “land” at the end of a country name such as Ireland (land of Eire) or England (Angle land).

The vast majority of Germans that were born before 1933 were definitely notbrought up with anti-Semitism. racism or Social Darwinism. The latter is an invention of the late 19th/early 20th century that could have been taught in kindergarten or primary school.
If you mean that the Germany of the 1930s had a wrapped mind because they were taught to be loyal and obedient subjects to the emperor, that, in times of crisis, they have to gather around their leaders and don’t question what the leaders say, then you’re right.
But the Germans of the early 20th century were not the only people that were educated that way.

We had a person named hdvideo posting some very similar crap here around May or June of 08. It depends on whose ox is being Al Gored. If you are are the copyright holder and you want to get paid, you would might object to free distribution, even if those who receive it are unlikely to buy it anyway. It’s the same situation as was seen with software piracy.
I suppose some day there will be a law requiring each PC to have an ecryption-protected ID embedded in the CPU which will enable copyright holders to get a cut of everything of theirs that you download from a money account set up ahead of time, no matter whose site it comes from. I would like to know the origin of the word [nuance]. I took Russian for a year back in college, and I was always impressed that my Russian teacher (she was from Uzbekistan) used [nuance] a LOT when talking about the slight differences between words… until I looked up “nuance in the Russian dictionary… IT’S THE SAME WORD IN RUSSIAN TOO!” I know that a lot of words cross languages, especially nouns (coffee, chocolate, beer, tobacco), but [nuance] seems like an odd one to be the same word in many languages

Nope, no hacking, no conspiracy. In the context of your question; Views are NOT live; no real-time updates.
Video views are not updated instantly and are updated maybe once or several times a day. When YT has issues, then updates get extended even further. I think comments and ratings are updated in (near) real time. When it comes to YT, keep in mind, I am always hedging as the rules change and they don’t send me a memo. :smile:
Notice that the video in your screenshot was by sxephil, who gets a ton of views. If you looked at the comment count, you may have seen maybe 1000 or more comments per the 200 views shown. By proxy you would have known that the internally not-shown, later-to-be-updated-views were also high.
Did you catch Marina’s Twitter the other day to Buckey? In the context of this discussion, she jabbed Buckey in the ribs for exactly that which I just talked about. Check it out. It was a hoot. Marina is a riot. She just cracks me up every second.

How do you learn the rules of the YT road? Blogs, blogs and more blogs and wiki. Check out wiki and search YouTube and related terms such as “views”. If I remember, they give a good writeup on views count, but could be outdated. Check the update history.

Hello originalistrick, I don’t know every little detail, but some of the following will give you an idea that viewing the older videos helps in several ways. I believe the video views count towards the total HFW Channel count. Then, I think ratings also contribute to some final metrics. Also, there are Ads near the video which also help support HotForWords expenses.
I’ll show you what I mean. Go to YouTube, then at the upper left you see the four buttons, Home, Videos, Channels and Community. Click on Channels.
Now, you are looking at the Most Viewed Channels “This Week”, most likely. Above the 20 icons to the right, click “ALL TIME”. Notice that HotForWords is in position #19 with 168,463,007 views. By viewing the older videos, you will push her views past the next person until she becomes #1. Having a Channel in the top spot is also very important. So, I watch a lot of the classic HotForWords videos; besides, I’m a sloooowww learner. :wink:

I also agree that this indocrination was by no means limited to early-twentieth-century Germany. If you are implying that this same type of “education” was prevalent in the US at that time, then I also agree. If you imply that this “education” is prevalent in the US, today, then I still agree.
Where I disagree is in your second paragraph. I have seen many documents which demonstrated racism and anti-Semitism in this time. I have also seen much evidence of anti-Romani (Gypsies) and anti-Slavik literature. This was not limited to the typical propaganda outlets, but was also prevalent in scientific journals, elementary textbooks, newspaper articles and cartoons, etc.
The disturbing part, is I have seen very similar trends in the US. These trends were most prevalent about twenty to thirty years earlier in the US. I am actually doing some research right now about eugenics in the US, specifically Larry Hamilton Laughlin’s book, Eugenical Sterilization in the US, published in 1922. The most disturbing part is that this trend did not decline after WWII, when Americans saw all the horrors of that war. The eugenics movement continued into the 1970s! Social and scientific trends in the 1920s and ’30s Germany were very similar to trends in the US in the 1900s and ’10s. :cry:
One difference is that while Germany concentrated on people with Hebrew, Slavik, and Romani descent, the US was concerned with people of African, Native American (at home,) and Asian (for imperialism abroad) descent.

Good one. I can see it goes back to, at least, Rousseau. JFK also had several other, more modern interpretations at his disposal. JFK was great at implementing the other side of the “We the People” coin. The people must be active in order for democracy to work. He was a genius at promoting self-sacrifice without promoting denial of individual rights. It is a fine line and a delicate balance. We have lost that idea of self-sacrifice lately.
I know I tend to over compensate when someone else decides that my individual rights are less important than the “common good” (Patriot Act.) I agree that I should willingly give to the common good, but I do not like someone else making that decision for me. Hypocritical? Maybe, but I do see a distinct and relevant difference in the sacrificing of individual rights and the confiscation of personal freedom.

While watching your video on Codswallop I was actually drinking an [Adirondack] brand Vanilla Cream Soda, and it occurred to me I would like to know where the origin of the word [Adirondack] came from. Now used of course to describe the mountain range, but I have a feeling this word has an interesting story.

By “we” I meant Americans in general. Most of us have had a knee-jerk reaction. The problem is, these reactions have been in opposite directions. Some of us react by confiscating the personal freedom of our brothers; others react by building a wall around those individual rights at the expense of all others. Oftentimes, the same person will do both, simultaneously.
Chacha, if you are hungry, I will willingly give you food, even if that means I will have to go without. If, however, you decide to take that food from me, then my automatic tendency is to stop you. I believe that I should let you keep that food, and that I should give you more, besides. Do I consider that hypocrisy? No; I consider it weakness. That is a different problem that I need to address with a different strategy. When someone pushes me, then I automatically tend to push back. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.
As for what the Patriot Act has done to me personally – it means that I am directly responsible for infringing upon the personal freedom of others. Initially I agreed with the Act, because I felt it was necessary for me to sacrifice that individual freedom for the benefit of my brothers and sisters. Looking back, I see that I went too far. I not only sacrificed my own freedom, but I sacrificed the freedom of others. If law enforcement has reason to believe that someone is a terrorist, then yes, that person should be held accountable to justice. To hold anybody, without charge, indefinately, without counsel, is never justice.
I agree absolutely that these are different circumstances that recquire different measures. Should extra lattitude be given when dealing with terrorists? Absolutely. Does that mean we can abandon the founding principles of this great nation – those promising a balance of individual liberty with public welfare? Absolutely not.
Lest you think that this has been just a meaningless exchange of lofty ideals, I will be happy to inform you that it has been more. Due to your earlier comments, I will pay more heed to my own sacrifice and give it willingly. The Germany of 1933 was still the Germany of Goethe, Schiller and Lessing. Every pupil at a German Grammar school was obliged to read Lessing’s Nathan the Wise until 1933. Germany was the country that made Einstein a leading physicist at the Prussian Academy of Sciences. The Nazis startedburning books before they started burning humans.
Anti-Semitism and social Darwinism wasn’t just a German phenomenon. Anti-Semitism has existed since the medieval and even before all over Europe including Germany of course.
Hitler and his Nazi movement are unique and can’t be compared to anything in the present. Therefore, it is almost always inappropriate to make a comparison with Hitler or the Nazis. There are even expressions for the overuse of Hitler comparisons: Godwin’s law and Reductio ad Hitlerum.
The overuse of Hitler comparisons plays down the bestiality of Hitler, of the Nazi ideology and of the Nazi regime. Hitler was not just a fascist and the Nazi regime was not just a fascist dictatorship, they went far, far beyond that. That’s why I don’t like inappropriate Nazi comparisons. White farmers may have enslaved people of African origin, but making their slaves work wasn’t aimed at killing them like the forced labour in Nazi concentration camps was.

I think that we kind of half way agree. I think I understand what you are saying. I am saying that Germany did have an abundance of racist literature (scientific, literary, scholarly…) well before Hitler came into power. I have seen copies of this, myself. Granted, I have not seen any original documents, but I have seen enough, that I trust their existence. Most of my Nazi research was focused on their anti-Roma ‘solution.’ Anti-Roma literature has been all over Europe (as you say, since the Middle Ages.)
I am also saying that this racist ideology was NOT limited to Germany. I have a handful of US literature in my hands right now. I have also seen British, French, Polish, Japanese and Russian documents which say basically the same thing, just some of the names have been changed.
I agree that slavery is not synonomous with genocide. I am not saying it is any better or worse, but it is definately different. The atrocity of Nazi Germany was in how well they did their job. The Germans were so much further technologically advanced (that unique German helmet – only the Gremans had the technology to shape steel that way and keep its strength.) They literally made mass killings (and mass disposal) into a science.
Others who tried the “final solution” but with nowhere near the dramatic success: US v Native Americans, especially Cherokee and Choctaw on the Trail of Tears, which was a death march and NOT a ‘relocation;’ the Japanese v the Chinese during the Rape of Nanking; the British v Aboriginal Australians. Post WWII: Rwanda, Darfur, East Timor, Sierra Leone.
No one has been able to match Germany with their spectular success, except maybe Stalin (but he was an equal-opportunity discriminator; he killed anyone), but many, many others have matched Germany with their intent.
I feel it is dangerous to isolate the Holocaust as a unique event. Unique in its efficiency, yes; in its motives, absolutely not. If the Holocaust was just a freak in history, then we have nothing to learn from it. It was a horrible and despicable act of inhumanity, but the historical record has shown that the idea of racial superiority has been all too common, and the inhuman measures by which this superiority has been exercised is all too frequent.

I would like to know more about the word [hack].
There is a reference to its origin (in the Hacker Quiz) from the word “to-haccian” meaning to Hack at the ground. Now this is an obvious reference to a “Hacker” in golf, who is not a great player.
Not so obvious is its reference to an “Office Hack” who was a man Friday, or jack of all trades, who did everything, but was not particularly good at anything.
It seems that somewhere in time, there has been a shift from a Hack, who was just a “wannabee” to a Hacker, who is an expert – it has become its own antonym.
Also note that the noun “a Hack” can be a quick and dirty, or an unusually simple solution, to a complex problem. I would expect this to be a derivation from the computer Hacker, but is it possible that it pre-dated that usage for mechanical problems, such as using panty hose to replace a fan belt on a broken down car.

In answer to your question: Yes. One of my favorite gray haired priests used etymology to dissect scripture. He would enthusiastically build his sermons around one word. The new understandings of the words provided improved meaning of the scriptures. I have been tempted to send him this link and suggest he do online sermons, but I fear he may have conservative views shunning the female figure and casting me into Hell for being a “hornbag”. Don’t put your faith in statistics, they’re often incorrect, as the statisticians fail to ask the correct questions.
