    an internet word?
    HOLYWTFBBQSAUCE!

but i’ve got a word request:

    So the word is [Harlot].
I heard it in some songs and it appears to have several meanings.

In …uhm i think The beast and the Harlot I think it stands for a beauty (in german “Die Schöne und das Biest) or just a woman in general.

But in “Diadems” by Megadeth it stands for Babylon (the “bitch” in the bible)”The Harlot puddles (what does “puddle” mean by the way  ) for her lies, from where she speaks”

so thats all i guess, i’ll wait for any answers

Very nice video. Can I request the word ‘Research’. It is used as an expression for finding out new information, most commonly data. I mean in the context of Research and Development, not as in the research for homework. This is because Re is a common prefix meaning ‘again’, and search. But how are you finding new information is you are searching again?

    Marina,

DO NOT PRONOUNCE F-T-W AS A WORD IN PUBLIC PLACES — it might be mistaken for certain evil pronouncements such as Ayatollah Khomeini’s 1989 pronouncement of a death sentence on Salman Rushdie for having written a book (The Satanic Verses).

Marina, all over the internet, as well as the last Administration of the Presidency of the United States, I have seen, listened to, or read comments by people who I later declared to be [charlatan]s. I’m just curious, where does the word [charlatan] originate from?

In my view, none of the abbreviations mentioned on the internet would make for a decent lesson. Not even FTW, but Marina pulled it off. I don’t know how she does that, but I guess that knowing what an abbreviation means, and knowing it’s origins, are two totally different things.
    Now, anyone for DotA? :-)

  • hs4mm

Marina, I just assumed you were pronouncing F-T-W correctly and did not think about it. Now that I think about it, there could be other ways to pronounce F-T-W that result in a sound that is distinctly different from the sound that should be avoided.

(By the way, I doubt it but if someone talked you into pronouncing F-T-W the way you do in the video, I would double-check their intentions — they might not be your friends.)

LYSM means “Love You So Much.”
ISLY means “I still love you.”
    XOXOX means “Hugs and kisses.”
831 is “I Love You” (Eight letters, three words, one meaning).

Some further investigation for amnoaweegie and others:

You can pronounce any combination of letters if you try hard enough, even XRWOJSXC. But let’s face it, the average person would pronounce it uh, unpronounceable. Same with FTW. So it is not an acronynm, but an initialism.

…BBC, ABC and the like are all the letter sounds, why on earth would you want to pronounce them as words?

Ed Zackly! Have you ever heard of “speeka”? No, but you know what ess pee cee aay is, don’t you?

Only letter groups that are ordinarily pronounceable are acronyms. An example is NATO. Most people would not say “N, A, T, O;” they would say “nay – toe.” Thus it is an acronym. PETA, but not PTA. Even HMMWV*, which looks to be just an initialism, is, by common, practice an acronym. (I’ll bet you have never heard it spelled out in your life. Not even once!) Chemikal: You said “A word formed from….” That’s my point. Just any collection of letters is not a word. If it is commonly pronounced instead of spelled, it’s a word.

A fatwa is not necessarily an evil pronouncement. Generally, a fatwa is an opinion of an Islamic scholar whether a behavior is allowed or forbidden under Islamic law. Most fatwas deal with things like dress code, rules for the Ramadan, how to pilgrimage corectly to Makkah, etc. I would say that an islamic fatwa is similar to the pastoral letters in some Christian churches. In Sunni Islam, a fatwa is definitely not more than that – it’s simply a recommendation for good behavior for the followers of that religion.

The Wikipedia article you’ve mentioned addresses mainly some of the extremest fatwas that are AFAICS ;-) not representative for fatwas in general.

What would they stand for? No, they are just approximate spellings of the sounds.

To what do you refer to, ABC-123 or WKHL? The latter callsign is an obvious fake, because it is a known fact that nobody in Indiana has an FM radio. A young Hoosier, as a right of passage, will build an AM-only crystal set using a Quaker Oats oatmeal box for the form to wind the tuning inductor. If his work meets muster with a panel of wizened experts, he will use it exclusively for radio reception until his death. Any outsider bringing any other kind of receiver into the state is summarily condemned and buried up to his neck (to form a good ground) in the yard of a Hoosier who is getting poor reception due to the nature of local soil conditions. Be warned: these people are purists and will not tolerate heathen sets!

    It’s true, I tell you.

  • hs4mm

My smattering of knowledge of history: A long time ago, for quite some time, the Muslims were the most advanced civilization: they had discovered Aristotle and had made significant advances in fields such as Astronomy and Mathematics (e.g., we use Arabic numerals today (except that 0 came from India), Al-Khwarizmi invented Algebra). But soon, they started emphasizing religion, and this led to their collapse into a primitive civilization (which they are to this day). Some of their books were saved from destruction (e.g., burning of libraries) and found their way into Europe. Europeans used these books to discover Aristotle which led them to start to flourish and eventually end up with the Renaissance and the Industrial Revolution.

In my initial response, it looks like I’m yelling or something, but it was just that I forgot to put a backslash in my html bold tag, and made everything after that bold, too. I’m glad that somebody else remembers the same meaning I remember. I don’t remember it from the military. Obviously, FTW has more than one meaning.

Marina, I want to make sure I understand. First, you replay a video in which you state the word “pussy” twice with a smile on your face. (There might be those who would debate you said it more because of the word “pusillanimous”. I will not be that picky.)

Then you give us the greatest 5 seconds of video in HFW history by letting your hair down and shaking your, umm …self.

I think you might be setting the bar too high for the next video.

Interestingly, the FTW video is in my subscription box, even though I did watch the video here. Reason for the FTW still being in my subscription box, even after watching it here, is due to me deleting my cookies. Hey ChaCha, sorry mein Freund, I was in the military and I never heard of FTW. We hardly ever used any acronyms at all except two; FUBAR and SNAFU. FTW may have been localized to some military theaters, regions, or other areas. I was all over the Pacific.

In terms of recent modern usage on the Internet, the origin Marina presented is credible. Even though it may be true that there was / is a prior use of the FTW acronym, there seems to be no connection to it except coincidental.

The use of F.T.W meaning “Fuck The World” was also a single record from the Norwegian band Turbonegro in 2003, much later than Hollywood Squares.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuck_the_World_(F.T.W.)

As an ancillary side note, it seems that there are many words, phrases, prefixes and so on that have different sources of origins, but later through time seem to appear to melt into one idea. Two that come to mind is the prefix “para” and the recent “Pusillanimous”.

Also, ChaCha, check out the Urban dictionary.

There are 14 pages for FTW, and no mention of military references. Biker references, and Free The Wales, First The Victory, Fort Worth Texas, are other meanings.

Marina, I’ve been extending my vocabulary, but I cannot find the etymology of these new words:

    [Foreploy] & [Cashtration]

    Foreploy (n.)
Any misrepresentation or outright lie about yourself that leads to sex.

    Cashtration (n.)
Reduction in cashflow suffered by persons caught using foreploy.

Although Marina has not specifically done the origin of the word, Marina did include a reference to it in the SOS Game Answer video located here.

    That’s right for strategy games.
But for MMORPG, zerg is a way of rushing in a lot of players early in the battle.

In fairness to Marina, it must be noted that FTW has had many meanings over the years. The ones I know best are from a time when she was only [a gleam in her Daddy's eyes].
Marina takes the usage of this acronym from the current use employed in Internet chatter. My only qualm is that the data for the origins of the past is out there, and wasn’t researched thoroughly.
For those who have not ever served this country in the military, clearly such a void of information is to be expected.
My service has helped me to understand many things technical, political, etc. that the common citizen will not understand whether by absence of knowledge, or a by a political choice.
Common citizens always look for the easy answer. Always.
An example of this is President Obama’s idea of sacrifice.
He has no clue what real sacrifice is, as he has never had to make any of consequence, himself. He has no skin in the game; the real test will come when the metal meets the meat. Meanwhile, his policies will gut and skin this country of it’s wealth and prosperity and affect every person of every class. The ones who will feel the most betrayed are those who were fool enough to vote for him. As for me?
Those of you who voted for him have already betrayed me; my service to this country; and the future of the World.
So don’t look to me for any sympathy, because you drank the Kool Aid.
One thing it will teach you is to do your own thinking, and trust no politician with “change” as a polical agenda.

I operate primarily on written examples of something, as it’s the only way that I can verify something. I ran into the same issue with Drink the Kool-Aid with some people writing to me, saying that they used the expression prior to the Jonestown Massacre, yet there is no written example of the use prior to that. I believe you in that you used the expression, but there is no example of it existing anywhere in written literature that I can find, so I didn’t mention it.

When I was in the Army, “FTA” was a frequently heard expression. (We all knew it didn’t mean, “Fun, Travel, and Adventure.”)
So many people vote for the politicians who promise them the most “giveaways” like free healthcare for everyone, more foodstamps, more welfare for longer periods, more this and that. So why work when it’s given to you for free? Let the suckers who work and produce and pay their taxes pay for it!
I doubt if any politician who runs on good policies can beat the ones who promise to “share the wealth”, i.e. “provide more giveaways.”
