Marina what are your thoughts on where a person can remove their own comment on You Tube if they don’t like it. I think it has a good side. If you look at your comment and a word or sentence doesn’t make sense then you can remove the comment then start over. But how does it affect the overall commenting as a whole?

I have an Uncle Oscar as well, I wonder if he is the same one.
He lived in CA but I think this was a little before his time.
He had a neat job selling oil drilling equipment to oil companies so he always had the neatest cars as it was necessary to travel throughout the Southwest. One car I remember was the Dodge convertible with the real wood panels on the side. He kept this one in his barn in Chico, CA for many years. Some collector eventually talked him into selling.
He had a shaved head and wore a belt with silver dollars around it. At family reunions he would pass out silver dollars to all the kids in the family.

Dear Marina, I didn’t see many movies this year. I didn’t like “Quantum f Solace” so my favorite movie for this season was “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of thew Crystal Skull.” “Slumdog Millionaire” is favored to win, tonight. Homework: I think I only saw four movies last year. The two best ones were both about the magician Jerry Andrus. Even though the first is more amateurish and the second more professional, I found the first to be better than the second.

1) A Thing of Wonder: The Mind + Matter of Jerry Andrus

2) Andrus: the Man, the Mind & the Magic. This movie is made by a group of skeptics — so I make the disclaimer that I am NOT a skeptic; I maintain that knowledge and certainty is possible to man.

Incidentally, Jerry Andrus is my second favorite magician. My top favorite magician is Tommy Wonder. Here’s a sampling of his work:

The first set consists of Close-Up Magic – magic that is performed with interaction with the audience, with the audience being as near as arms length. Close-up magic is the kind of magic I like.

a) The Ring Watch and Wallet (a shocker in under 90 seconds!)

b) Tamed Cards (the audience gets to touch and examine the objects being used by the magician while the magic is being performed)

c) Close-up Cups and Balls (objects that are right “under the nose” of the spectators translocate into other places!)

d) Ambitious Card plus Ringbox (involves lots of interaction with the audience)

The next samples are of Stage Magic. The three acts are essentially the same; they involve a stage version of Cups and Balls, and also an egg and a bird vanish and reappear in the strangest of places! The first one is the more polished version of the act (the other two are earlier versions of the act).

History has shown that in order to keep track of a conversation, all of the elements of the conversation should remain otherwise you have no idea what messages were said prior to the comments that followed. So in that regard, the idea where users can remove their comments is a bad thing. But since there really aren’t that many “conversations” going on on YouTube, then I don’t think it really makes a difference.

I joined the site just last night, but it’s become an instant fave…words, idioms and their origins have always facinated me…I teach sixth grade and I use the origins, roots, affixes, etc. to bring vocabulary more meaning within context. One reason there isn’t more conversation at YT is that the default format of the blog is like the forum here (but unlike this blog) — the relationship between posts is not known. The user has to change the format in order to see the reveal relationships and that discourages the relationships.

“Burn After Reading“. Not the best Coen Bros film, but pretty good. It was successful in what it attempted. Doesn’t say much for the rest of the bunch o’ 2008 flicks . Comedies don’t have much of a chance at the Oscars, anyhow. I’m going to wait to watch “Zombie Strippers” on cable TV and not rent it at the DVD store. I haven’t seen “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” yet, has anybody seen it? Was it any good?

I have only seen a couple movies this year ( Righteous Kill, Indiana Jones ), and they were both meh. :roll:
I do read the Kathy Riechs novels. She is the chick that wrote the books upon which the TV series Bones are based. They are pretty good. I do not take my history books to work, because I nees my reading glasses, and I am afraid I will forget the glasses at work. The novels have bigger print, so I can read them at work. :grin: They are pretty good. The first title is Deja Dead.

Who designed the statuette?

The design was supervised by Cedric Gibbons, head of MGM’s art department. The statuette depicts a naked knight holding a sword on top of a reel of film. The reel has five spokes, signifying the five original branches of the academy (producers, directors, actors, technicians and writers). It is said that Mexican director Emilio El Indio Fernandez posed for the design.

Why is it called the Oscar?

The nomenclature is a debated issue. In an interview, Bette Davis claimed she named the Oscar after her first husband. The Academy’s executive secretary Margaret Herrick is also credited for the name because a newspaper column in 1931 reported that the award resembled her uncle Oscar. In 1932, Walt Disney was quoted as thanking the Academy for his Oscar. By 1934, the nickname was in common usage. The name was officially adopted by the Academy in 1939. As of 2008, a total of 2,701 Oscars have been given so far.

Does the winner own the statuette?

Since 1950, the statuettes have been legally encumbered by the requirement that neither winners nor their heirs may sell the statuettes without first offering to sell them back to the Academy for $1. If a winner refuses to agree to this stipulation, the Academy keeps the statuette.

A lot of Bond fans were taken aback by the new James Bond, because he doesn’t rely on gadgets as in the older movies. I like ‘em because I have read all the Ian Fleming books and the new releases are true to the books. Crystal Skull has serious pseudo-science issues. Magnesium (in gunpowder) is not magnetic, nor is lead shot. Indy would have been nothing more than a bloody smear inside the fridge. Funny, how it was thrown clear of the blast area and THEN the door just falls open… Kids don’t know science, I guess, so things like survivng sudden acceleration/deceleration trauma (without a scratch) appears feasible. As a “romp” 50′s nostalgia piece, it was alright, but hardly up to the standard established by the early films in the series. Another film that fell flat was Day the Earth Stood Still. Jennifer and Keanau couldn’t save that horrible mess of a movie.
They had to go and screw up a perfectly good movie, ripe for a remake, with some stupid PC agenda crap. They won’t be talking about that one; quite forgettable and disappointing. Reeves playing Klaatu was horrible! ala Kurt Russell in Soldier, or Nimoy as Spock.
I guess if you like gratuitous torture and murder movies, Slumdog is right up there with Passion of the Christ…
People spend a bloody fortune watching that stuff and are “moved” – I don’t always get it…

Check out Hitman, In Bruges, Dark Knight, Bangkok Dangerous, Hellboy II, Ironman and Burn after Reading for starters. Tinkerbell and Bolt were very good (Disney) and Zack and Miri Make a Porno is a great date movie!
Pineapple Express is interesting – good acting.
I don’t stomach fu-fu-little-girly “chick flicks” at all so you’re on your own, there… Titles like Bride Wars, etc. are an instant RED FLAG, indicating you will be bored/driven to tears (boo-effing-hoo). Same for The Wrestler (unless sweaty muscle freaks turn you on).
Anything involving Quentin Tarantino and John Rodriguez tends to be pretty good. Western Sukyaki Durango is campy, but well made.

I thought the video sounded familiar. I knew I had heard where the Oscar got it’s name from before and I thought it was from Hotforwords, but I wasn’t certain. I’d have to say my favorite movie this year was “The Changeling”. Of Course, I liked “Gran Torino” also. Clint Eastwood does some really good work. The way those movies were explained in their trailers made them sound like subjects I wouldn’t normally be interested in, but I was very pleasantly surprised. Those are the only notable ones I can think of off the top of my head. I’m sure there are other good ones I forgot about.

Hi bsomebody, the second graph’s gray (white) line shows the difference between a date’s votes and the previous date’s votes. In other words, it shows the change in votes (combined votes). On the 15th, you see a huge spike of almost 200 additional votes from the previous day, probably due to the O’Reilly show visitors coming to the site and voting.

The red line is a smoothed out version (4 day moving average) of the gray line which shows the trend of the voting. You can see that the voting was averaging around 40 votes per day, then picked up to around 70 votes, then has been declining.

You know it has me thinking. Why is this award show only for actors? Why not Karate competitions or spelling bees? How about best teacher award? What does this show our society? We reward acting more than the other professions? How many acting awards are out there now? Golden Globe, what others?

Yeah years ago I hear it was heavily driven by politics. That’s why all the other award show were produced. Wasn’t there some protest years ago from some of the actors regarding these issues with the Oscars?

One think I do notice about the Oscars is the timing of the release of movies. Anyone who releases a movie just before the Oscars come out will stand a very good chance of getting an award. I guess they vote on what moves them today and not what they saw 12 months ago. When I watch Dark Night, I was so moved with Keith’s performance I thought that best supporting actor was in the bag for him. Had he still been alive I would bet $10k that he would reappear in DN.

Today I still don’t like the Oscars. Just too political and unfair. I had much more entrainment from the 100 Best of FHV show. I busted a gut. Laughter is healthy for the soul. I don’t think I would have gotten that from the Oscars. I would venture to guess that the producers of FHV were thinking the same thing.

The Russian who ordered the rice (the ship’s cargo) refused the rice and wanted his money back – so the ship was not being allowed to go out of Russia.

As a hypothetical aside, if the US had defended itself properly against an unlawful entry, lots of people (both inside and outside US) would be screaming against the US. Unfortunately, after WW II, the US has been acting as a wuss when it comes to defending itself.

I’m surprised the chase took 18 hours. In that amount of time traveling maybe 22 knots they would have traveled about 400 nautical miles. That is some distance out of the borders. It’s very clear there intentions were to try to escape the authorities.

@ NW, Now your exaggerating. The 8 crew are not innocent. They were all participants on the escape. If they did not want to participate they could have done on gumby suits and jumped over board. Easy feat to do for I have done it myself. The crew knew exactly what they were doing. One thing your not familiar with is many ships crewed do not have families at home or if they do they, the crew, do not care about leaving them behind. So your making assumptions about their concerns of their families if they even have them.

Interesting a mountain man with plush tastes. Sounds like oil and water trying to mix as they were the same. I myself would like to form trees into a tall ship. I keep her looking ship shape by cleaning her up and I give her a make over with fresh paint when she is feeling a bit weathered down. I leave her in capable hands that will continue to take care of her forever.

It looks like you were on another country YT site, such as UK, IE, DE, etc. What you said is not true for the US YT Most Viewed pages. That’s why you also noticed the missing HFW video.

Be careful of YT cookies as they will remember your last country visited. The way to know that you are on the US page is when the country in the upper left near the YT logo says “Worldwide”. Last year it said “Global”. There is a bunch of threads on this HFW site around June, July 2008 where some of us talked about getting on the correct YT page.

What you said above is correct for the UK site as an example.
Here is how you can get un-intended data.

In your browser Adr bar, enter “uk.youtube.com”.
Notice that the URL goes back to the US Adr, but now look at the country next to the logo, it should say UK. Now, visit the Most Viewed, and you’ll see low views as you said.

Now, clear your cookies, refresh your browser and the country next to the YT logo will say “Worldwide”. Now visit the Most Viewed. Different data, right?

Reminds me of some books I read awhile back. I will try to look them up, you may be interested. I don’t know if you read fantsy novels, but the story line is pretty unique. The ships are living; the figurehead actually speaks. Anyway, they have the whole bad guys trying to steal on ship, killing another ship, the good guys trying to save the ships, the young maiden whose pure heart must save the day… the whole nine yards. Good series.

My ship was off the coast of Vladivostak in the late ’80s. Part of what we did was (try to) enforce the 3-mile international boundary instead of the Soviet’s claim to 12-mile boundary. Their carrier would lock on and tell us to back off, so we backed off – until the next day when we did it all over again. The way that your country got switched is probably due to clicking on a video that someone shared. For example, there are some videos that are only stored in Ireland or UK, etc, “ie.youtube.com”. I forget which video it was, but I would watch this one music video and it would always throw my country into Ireland. Then, I’d forget to look and I’d get the stats wrong. :smile:

Yeah Patagonia is a bit pricey but it also serves an important function that department store clothing can’t do. I’m a person that hold function more than looks.
