6,473 texts a month

wapost_333_gch

Interesting article in the Washington Post today about teens and texting.   Teens with cellphones AVERAGE 2,272 TEXT MESSAGES A MONTH!

I think that’s quite a lot.   And it does make me wonder what the effects are on the teens who are constantly being distracted by texts from various friends.

I remember when I had a friend who called me 20-30 times a day just to ask me random questions.. it really drove me crazy as I couldn’t focus on anything for very long without getting distracted by a phone call from this person.   The minute I got this person under control, everything started to happen for me and I started to achieve major success!

Without having any “me time” to think about things for any length of time, without interruption, must have some kind of effect on people.   What do you all think?

Here is the article I am talking about.

    Well, I have been texting alot lately, about 100 in the last week but that is really above average for me… I get 300 free messages when i top up £10 and just got something else that takes off £5 and gives me 1000/mins to use to other people on my network. also texts come out of it too…

    So normally in a month I can go through about…. 900… So its not too bad…

  • http://www.hotforwords.com Marina

    I’m doing the math… 2272 messages a month comes out to 6 per (waking) hour. That means that each teen can only go 10 minutes without a distraction. Of course, texts usually go in streams, but it still seems like a lot of distraction per hour?
    Based on 12 hours awake. Probably not enough.

    Marina,

    Very interesting and timely. Especially appreciate your situation pertaining to your friend’s calling you constantly. I had attempted to never own a cell phone but got one a couple years ago. Now I’m trying to never text. So far so good.
    I really don’t understand people like the girl in the article who said she’d die if she couldn’t text-message. I know I’m the minority in society and certainly within the HFW Family, but I think parents need to get control of situations like this.

    .

    First, big picture of what is involved in Conceptualizing/Thinking:

    “A ‘concept’ is a mental integration of two or more perceptual concretes, which are isolated by a process of abstraction and united by means of a specific definition. Every word of man’s language, with the exception of proper names, denotes a concept, an abstraction that stands for an unlimited number of concretes of a specific kind. It is by organizing his perceptual material into concepts, and his concepts into wider and still wider concepts that man is able to grasp and retain, to identify and integrate an unlimited amount of knowledge, a knowledge extending beyond the immediate perceptions of any given, immediate moment. Man’s sense organs function automatically; man’s brain integrates his sense data into percepts automatically; but the process of integrating percepts into concepts—the process of abstraction and of concept-formation—is not automatic.

    .

    “The process of concept-formation does not consist merely of grasping a few simple abstractions, such as ‘chair,’ ‘table,’ ‘hot,’ ‘cold,’ and of learning to speak. It consists of a method of using one’s consciousness, best designated by the term ‘conceptualizing.’ It is not a passive state of registering random impressions. It is an actively sustained process of identifying one’s impressions in conceptual terms, of integrating every event and every observation into a conceptual context, of grasping relationships, differences, similarities in one’s perceptual material and of abstracting them into new concepts, of drawing inferences, of making deductions, of reaching conclusions, of asking new questions and discovering new answers and expanding one’s knowledge into an ever-growing sum. The faculty that directs this process, the faculty that works by means of concepts, is: reason. The process is thinking.”

    .

    {Ayn Rand in a paper titled The Objectivist Ethics delivered at the University of Wisconsin Symposium on Ethics in Our Time in Madison, Wisconsin, on February 9, 1961 and reproduced in her anthology on ethics, The Virtue of Selfishness.}

    Then small picture of what happens in modern nursery schools:

    “A child needs periods of privacy in order to learn to think. He has had less privacy in that nursery school than a convict in a crowded concentration camp. He has had no privacy even for his bathroom functions, let alone for such an antisocial activity as concept-formation.”

    .

    {Ayn Rand in her article The Comprachicos in book “The New Left: The Anti-Industrial Revolution”.}

    That’s only 6 minutes per hour max. I would guess more like 3 minutes per hour average.

  • http://bit.ly/2ff0q9 Captain Jack

    What do I think? I think if that’s what the people want to do for entertainment then great for them.

    People say ADD is a disease but I think it’s evolution. Look at the success of Howie Mandel. There is much activity in the world today and those minds that can adapt to it will succeed.

    Look at twitter. It’s just micro blogging software. It’s texting on steroids. I have even found help on twitter that has saved me $$. So I say is texting a bad thing?

  • http://bit.ly/2ff0q9 Captain Jack

    I asked many people why text when you can call. They said texting is much faster. Also it save time. Average call takes time. Texting forces people to say what they need to say in 140 character or less. Also you don’t have to wait for the person to type out that text. It could take some one an hour (exaggerated for the example) to type a 140 character message, you don’t have to sit there and watch them type it live wasting your hour. I don’t like to talk on the phone. I only do because I have to. I try to keep the conversations down to 30 to 60 seconds. Unless it’s a friendship call and I have time. When I talk, I’m usually getting paid to talk. For example in my classes I get paid to talk. That said talking drive me nuts for it’s a very slow form of communication. It also requires more mental work.

    Human speech is slow. YouTube is slow. Typed words are faster.

  • http://uk.youtube.com/user/jamesingtonthethird James

    Marina, I need your guidance. YouTube has messed up on me and although I am still doing the 1280X720 thing like you said it is still letterboxing… Do you know why this might be happening? I can’t think why…

  • http://toastytech.com/guis/bobboot1.gif Bob

    What Jack says is true; texting is just another way to communicate and, like anything else, can be a good way or a bad way, depending on how it’s used.
    Any new technology or technique has to be learned and experimented with, in order to find the way to use it to one’s advantage.
    If these kids think they would ‘die if they couldn’t text-message’, then 1. it’s a form of addiction and 2. if they didn’t have text-messaging to distract them, they would find some other way to procrastinate.
    On the other hand, if people find that receiving phone calls, either voice or text, is intrusive, there is a marvellous invention incorporated into every device to deal with that – it’s called ‘The OFF button’.

    Number of text msgs I have sent = 0.

    I regard texting as chatting that has only one addressee. I am not a chatter. Perhaps I would use the text feature if it would not do anything at the other end except wait until it was checked (like voicemail). I think it is too intrusive to bombard someone with msgs, unless of course, they put it on vibrate and ask you to. :mrgreen:

    I wonder if employers will catch on to the time consumed by cellphone use (of any kind) and build screen rooms around the workspace and the restrooms, too. That’ll fix their little transistorized asses.

    I think you are right. I very much need time to think on my own. It leads t better creativity and more productivity. Not counting spam, I usually get 40 to 60 work-relatede e-mail messages per day. If I stopped to read my e-mail 60 times a day, I’d get little other work done. I reade my e-mail in batches three or four times a day. I answer e-mails if I have the answer, delete useless messages. and save ones that I need for later.
    I’m glad I don’t own a cellphone, and now I might not want one.

  • originalistrick

    It isn’t faster if you type like I do.

    Wow! Texting while in motocross. You’re lucky you didn’t kill yourself. :grin:

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

    Don’t worry about the texting. If you are not in that crowd, you will probably not see one except from the cellphone provider sending an ad every few months. In several years I only received one valid msg from a guy who was in a meeting and didn’t want to call out.

    Having a cellphone is really handy. Your relatives and friends can reach you in a hurry (which can save them a lot of time on their end), you always have a phone in the car and you never can tell when you might run across a 911 situation where it can save a life (maybe your own). I don’t know about now, but three years ago, I got my first one by buying the phone for $60 and prepaying a year’s worth of minutes, which worked out to $8/month. Then I disconnected the land line, which resulted in saving $10/month overall. Can’t beat that.

    What’s funny is that texting has been a major thrust in communication between parents and teens and peers for about 6+ years and many articles have been written about it.

    About 6 years ago I was working on a project billing by the hour and I had to interview some people in this huge office regarding how their system works. Nearly every person there was texting at one time or another during the day keeping up with their teen. It was very annoying to be interrupted in the middle of a business conversation and be told, wait, I have to get back to my kid.

    Currently, I see lots of women in the workplace with Google G1s who are constantly texting and I see it everywhere I go.

    Marina, in your writeup above, you actually pointed out two very interesting things, which are;
    1. Time management skills; it used to be said, “Gotta have it”. Now, it’s “Gotta have it, two minutes ago”. That begs the question; in your case someone else’s time management or mismanagement affected you and you took control back. You are correct, that texting is causing people to focus on other things and so they lose focus in other parts of their lives.

    2. Many people have the “fear of letting go” and don’t like being alone even for a moment, and they fail to focus on their inner thoughts as you pointed, and then failing to connect with other people in a meaningful way. I have noticed that a lot.

  • Chemikal

    What gets me, is how did she manage to get that person under control… I can rarely say no to someone who needs my help, even if it’s in my detriment. Though I’m no yes man… if you know what I mean.

    I use the phone to talk business or with close friends. If I think the call is going to be more than 30 minutes then I go for coffee. I like the human contact for facial expression are just as important. This is much I don’t say over the keyboard, for fear I would be misunderstood. You ever see a mime tell stories and not utter a single word? You understand him/her perfectly. Just goes to show body language is a form of communication that everyone knows.

    I seen a girl on the news that was a texting queen. She could text behind her back. Her parents didn’t mind for her grades were fine and she was active in sports. So yea it’s a case by case issue. Parents need to do their jobs and monitor.

    That’s funny Chemikal how you picked up on that. I can just visualize Marina embedding a 20,000 volt Tesla coil to the other person’s keyboard, and when that person tried to text Marina, that person would get zapped. Works on dogs, right? OK, OK, I’m exaggerating, maybe not 20KV,
    maybe, 19.2KV. :lol:

    I wonder, maybe Marina didn’t mean it literally, the statement; “…I got this person under control…”. Perhaps, Marina, meant to say, “when I (Marina) took control of my precious time…”? I think, from what I know of Marina, she may be a fastidious time manager as she gets a lot of things done.

    Here is a possible reason James.
    If you are using Vegas (or other video editor), there are 3 areas where you need to keep the settings the same, otherwise you will get a distorted sized format.

    The 3 areas that you want to pay attention to, are;
    1. Project settings
    2. Video format size/scale/crop while editing.
    3. When rendering.

    For example, I can have my project set to 640×480,
    then, while editing set the video format to 16:9 (i.e. sizing),
    then render to 4:3. The examples, I just gave will give a messed up format because they are not consistent. You will want 1280x, 16:9 consistency throughout.

    Check your project settings. Even if you have selected 1280x, if you have selected DVD, it will give you a different pixel ratio which will give you the letterbox effect.

    I only text with one of my daughters. My problem is when I come down to the study to get some homework finshed, and I spend hours at a time on the HFW site. Hmm… How could I fix that?

  • http://laserradio.com/gallery2.html wyo550

    I met a father in Laramie whose daughter had run up an expensive phone bill, texting something like 300 times/day. He and i couldn’t imagine 300 reasons/ day to say things like “I’ll be there in 5 minutes”. People are texting as they drive cars and endanger everyone around them! Proof that human-evolved relationships are now being sublimated by technological, emotionally safe and synthetic “relationships” defined as system features by corporations. How many Facebook friends do you have? I have three I barely know and the fourth is some woman I don’t know at all. She found me as having a car. In my novel about the Apocalypse, the motto is “Nothing means Nothing! Have a Nice Day.” That says it all. Very L.A. Vry digispk,th languag of tomrro tdy…uno?

  • http://wired.reddit.com/sexygeeks_2008/?s=top pedanticKarl – Vote Marina for Sexiest Geek

    Hi James, for me when that happens, that is, when I know I rendered properly, but the video result has black bars, it is because I used the wrong settings for the project settings.

    When I start with my default project template, all is fine, but sometimes I’ll use another template that has different settings and then, that will mess me up.

    Comments by MC Hammer (2/22/09) shows what is BAD about twitter. Contrary to what Hammer says about twitter “shortening the distance between creation of content and the consumer”, his actions show that he is actually unable to have a direct, focused, close relation with his wife. Here are two examples from the interview:

    (1) he tweets his wife, and then immediately confronts her with thoughts about whether or not she saw his tweet: clearly, he should have just engaged her with whatever it was that was on his mind;

    (2) while engaging in actions involving or leading to intimacy, his total focus is not on her, himself and their life — his focus is significantly diluted by an unhealthy concern to educate the masses by tweeting them a commentary!: Honey, let me educate the world that I am going to kiss you; tweet; a hasty peck (hasty so as to not keep his followers waiting too long); honey, let me educate the world that I just kissed you; tweet; etc.

    Soon, he and his wife will just set their devices to vibrate and have sex by tweeting each other … that is, if he continues to have a wife!
